Saudi, UAE Offer Help to Victims of Iran Floods

In a statement Friday, the Saudi Red Crescent Authority and the Red Crescent Society of the UAE said that they were drawing up a joint plan to “alleviate the suffering of people affected by the devastating flash floods that recently hit Iran.”

The operation, they, added was being undertaken within the framework of “Islamic brotherhood and in solidarity” with the Iranian nation.

The agencies noted that they were discussing appropriate procedures in order to implement their initiative. There was no reaction from Iranian authorities to the offer on Saturday.

The statement came a few days after the White House labeled the IRGC a “foreign terrorist organization,” drawing rebuke from many governments.

Saudi Arabia went out of its way to welcome the hostile move along with the UAE and Israel.

The IRGC – alongside Iran’s Army, voluntary groups, and locals – has been providing relief aid to those affected in unprecedented floods which have left at least 70 people dead.

Iran has repeatedly expressed readiness to cooperate with the Persian Gulf Arab countries, but those gestures have been ignored by Saudi Arabia which has supported Washington’s belligerent policy toward Tehran, instead.

The US has frozen bank accounts of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) as part of its unilateral sanctions against the Iranian people, making it almost impossible for foreign aid to reach the flood victims.

Under the Trump administration, the US has taken an increasingly hawkish posture toward Iran.

It has also been pushing forward a plan to establish a NATO-like regional alliance to confront Iran. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are members of the so-called “Arab NATO” envisioned by the US.

On Thursday, however, Reuters reported that Egypt had turned its back on the anti-Iran alliance.

Iran, UN to Expand Space Cooperation

That came in a meeting between Iranian ICT Minister Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi and head of the UN office Simonetta Di Pippo in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

Iranian Ambassador to the UN office in Vienna Kazem Gharibabadi was also present at the meeting.

The Iranian minister said Iran has made considerable progress in the outer space domain, and plans to launch a remote sensing satellite as well as two communications ones in the future.

“Iran’s measures are geared to developing peaceful activities in the outer space and reap the benefits of space technology for all Iranian people,” said Azari Jahromi.

He thanked the UNOOSA for its cooperation with regards to the recent flooding in Iran and called for closer cooperation between the two sides.

The UN official, in turn, said the UN office welcomes Tehran’s proposal for closer cooperation and will tap into UNOOSA’s potential in line with the cooperation plan to be put forward by Iran.

Dozens of Flood-Hit Couples Hold Wedding Ceremonies in Iran

In a recent ceremony called “Scent of Spring”, 35 Shiite and Sunni couple tied the knot despite all the problems they faced following the deadly flood in the province.

Video of Colonel Helping Iranians Hit by Extreme Weather Goes Viral

The modest army officer, Colonel Mohammad Haqiqi, was helping a group of people caught in heavy snow in Semnan province on March 19, 2019.

A member of the Army’s division in the northeastern city of Shahrud, Haqiqi narrates the story of that difficult day.

“Some people had been caught in heavy snow in Semnan province on March 19, 2019, and the Army was transferring them to a safe place. About 250 people were transferred to a garrison near Shahrud by 5 am,” he says.

Referring to the details of the film, Colonel Haqiqi said, “We were transferring these people to safe places, and we had stopped for a rest at a nearby mosque. At the time, the women and men wanted to get on the vehicle, but due to the lack of facilities and the height of the vehicle and Islamic considerations, I had to make that decision. The number of people you see in the video was about 70. I did not do anything special. The thing I did was my duty.”

Army’s Reaction

The Iranian Army’s official account later published this video saying that the clip must be seen millions of times in social media, and people should show this unique sacrifice to all Iranians in the cyberspace.

Although the location and time of this video is not known, the clear point is the efforts of these people to help.

Public Reaction

The colonel’s move and his sense of responsibility have drawn reactions on social media. A user wrote, “I swear to God I burst into tears. My salutation to you and to the army. In the real sense you showed that the army is ready to make sacrifices for the sake of the nation.”

Another user wrote, “Long live the humble men; those who rush to help their compatriots without being filmed [to show off]. We should kiss your hands [to show respect].”

“What can one say? Salutations to you. I kiss these people’s hands,” commented another one.

Another one said, “Let’s remember the image of the army colonel kneeling down to be the staircase of old men and women who were wounded. Let’s remember that in the era of media show-offs, there are some people who prove that the army is really ready to make sacrifices for the nation, and it is not just a slogan!”

“What heroes we have in this country! It is interesting that he is not filming his move and he is genuinely helping,” reads another comment.

The heavy snow that hit Semnan was the beginning of several weeks of extreme weather that hit various parts of Iran, killing over 70, injuring hundreds of others, destroying thousands of houses, and displacing hundreds of thousands of people.

Since March 19 when the floods started to strike Iranian cities and villages, Armed Forces, celebrities, officials, and people from all walks of life have rushed to help their compatriots, just like Colonel Haqiqi.

Lake Urmia Comes Back to Life with Latest Heavy Rains

According to Fars News Agency, compared to the same date last year, the water level has risen by 89 centimetres which means 2 billion cubic metres of water entered the lake in the past water year beginning in late September.

Lake Urmia shared between West Azarbaijan and East Azarbaijan provinces used to be the largest salt-water lake in the Middle East. However, it started to shrink in 1990s. The decrease in water level during the past 20 years seriously affected wildlife and human ecology.

Here are photos of the lake taken from Fars News Agency after the recent downpours:

Pakistan PM to Make First Visit to Iran in Late April

Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson Mohammad Faisal said the premier’s trip to Tehran has been finalized, and that details of the upcoming visit will be announced soon.

During the two-day trip, said the spokesperson, the Pakistani prime minister is likely to be accompanied by the ministers of foreign affairs, economy and environment as well as Zulfikar Bukhari, the special assistant to Prime Minister and chairman of the National Tourism Coordination Board (NTCB).

Faisal told reporters at his weekly press conference in Islamabad that Khan’s state visit to Iran had been on the agenda for months, but had not taken place so far due to some reasons.

He said Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry will soon announce the details of Khan’s visit to Iran.

Iran Strongly Censures Terrorist Attack in Pakistan’s Quetta

In a Friday statement, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi offered condolences to the Pakistani government and nation and sympathised with the families of the victims.

Qassemi added that the security and stability of the neighbours, especially Pakistan, is of great importance to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He also expressed hope that the Pakistani state and nation can thwart the plots of dissidents and enemies of the region by maintaining their unity and vigilance.

At least 20 people lost their lives and dozens wounded when a bomb ripped through a fruit market in the Pakistani city of Quetta on Friday.

The blast took place as Shiite Muslims were buying vegetables early on Friday morning.

Iranian Reformists Unanimously Condemn US’ IRGC Blacklisting

Union of Islamic Iran People Party, National Trust Party, and Neda Party criticized US President Donald Trump in separate statements, and some figures also took a stand against Trump in their Twitter accounts.

The main theme of these statements and tweets was that the reformists’ difference with and criticisms of the IRGC and its performance are within the scope of internal disputes; however, when faced with the foreign enemy, all support the armed forces in order to counter what threatens the sovereignty of the country.

One of the first figures who condemned the move was Abdollah Ramezanzadeh. He is the former spokesman and secretary of the government of reformist president, Seyyed Mohammad Khatami. Ramezanzadeh was arrested a few hours after the 2009 disputed presidential election. Shortly before his arrest, he released a speech posted on the opposition websites. He was sentenced to 6 years jail.

After the US designation of the IRGC as a terror group, Ramezanzadeh immediately wrote on the issue on his Twitter account. He wrote in a tweet that“despite all the controversies in the internal affairs, we unitedly support our armed forces against our foreign enemy.”

Trump’s Move to Spread Extremism: Union of Islamic Iran People Party

The Union of Islamic Iran People Party also immediately issued a statement on Monday night.

“The adventurist measure of the Trump administration is a violation of Iran’s national sovereignty and the international law, and a new effort to exacerbate the crisis in the region and the world. Union of Islamic Iran People Party strongly condemns this measure which is unprecedented in international politics and international law,” it said in a statement.

“The Party believes it is a threat against the integrity of the country that expands extremism and terrorism. The all-out support of all political forces and people for the bodies and organisations of the Islamic Republic of Iran is a national, religious, and historical duty. There is no doubt that this unwise act would lead to more national solidarity across Iran and, ultimately, will isolate the bullying administration of Trump,” reads the statement.

They Want to Impose Devastating War on Iran: National Trust Party

Secretary General of the National Trust Party, Ali Shakouri-Rad, who is a famous reformist figure, tweeted that “the US government’s move to brand the IRGC as a terror group is never due to IRGC’s intervention in domestic politics and economics. They use the role of the IRGC against their hegemonic interference in the region as an excuse to take such a decision. Their target is not the IRGC, but the Islamic Republic of Iran. They want to impose a devastating war on Iran.”

We Are All IRGC Members Confronting US: Ex-Labour Minister

Former Iranian Labour Minister Ali Rabi’ee, who was an adviser to former President Mohammad Khatami from 1997 to 2005, also slammed Trump’s measure. He wrote on his page that “in the face of the warmongering of the US government, we Iranians are all IRGC members.”

Trump after Increasing Pressure on People: Reformist Politician

Another senior reformist who condemned the IRGC blacklisting was Seyyed Mostafa Tajzadeh, a long-time political prisoner and a senior member of the Islamic Iran Participation Front, as well as Mojahedin of the Islamic Revolution of Iran Organisation.

Tajzadeh briefly served as Acting Minister of Interior under the Khatami administration. He was also an advisor to President Khatami in his last two years in office.

He was one of several leading reformists who filed a lawsuit against several commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps for their alleged intervention in Iran’s presidential elections in 2009. He was imprisoned at Evin Prison from 2009 until 2016.

However, he vehemently slammed the US for its move against IRGC. “I strongly condemn the designation of the IRGC as a terror organisation because Trump’s goal is not to fight terrorism and defend democracy and peace. He wants to put more pressure on the people to destabilise Iran and create more conflicts in the region,” reads his tweet.

IRGC Part of Iran’s 40-year History: Executives of Construction Party

The Executives of Construction of Iran Party, which is another reformist political party in Iran founded by the technocrat members of the cabinet of former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in 1996, also slammed Trump’s move.

This Party wrote in a tweet that “the IRGC is part of Iran’s 40-year history. Labeling such an organisation, which is part of the Iranian society, would lead to extremism, warmongering, and unscrupulousness about international rules, and it is condemned.”

Blacklisting IRGC Proves Foolishness of Trumpism: Neda Party

Neda-ye Iranian Party or “Second Generation of Reforms” is a reformist political party in Iran with social democratic leaningsthat held its first congress in 2015.

Nedaye Iranian Party in a statement said the IRGC itself has been the victim of terrorism. It said that according to Iran’s Constitution the IRGC is the official military force of the country and the Iranian nation would throw their weight unanimously behind this organisation to prove that the US administration’s move just shows the foolishness of Trumpism.

Moreover, the National Trust Party of Iran released a statement saying that the measure by the US government is against the national interests and sovereignty of Iran and is contrary to international law, therefore, it should not be overlooked.

“In the first reaction, the Iranian authorities took a countermeasure which was the least we expected to do. At the same time, we have to be alert not to be trappedby the ruling US and Israeli warmongers and provide them with a pretext for military confrontation. Alongside such countermeasures, legal follow-ups and even litigation, as well as political disclosure and use of diplomacy to question the decision of the White House at international organisations, and the use of power of peacemakers in the West and even inside the United States against Trump’swarmongering measures, next to the use of virtual space and public diplomacy to illustrate the nature of the American government shall be put on the agenda.”

“There is no Iranian and no political force in Iran with the least affiliation to this land who would agree with this hostile policy of the United States against Iran. Now it’s an opportunity to distinguish between foes and friends and know the traitors to the country and the people. There are differences among the political forces about the performance of the IRGC in some areas, but it is an internal conflict in the family of revolution that nobody is willing to let foreigners intervene. We defend the military forces of the country, including the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, as part of the national power and legal authority of the country, and we will not allow the enemies to misuse them against us,” reads the statement.

US Move in Violation of International Law: MP

Mohammad Reza Aref, who is an Iranian reformist politician and the current parliamentary leader of reformists’ Hope fraction in the Iranian Parliament, also lashed out at the decision. He wrote in his twitter account that “The sound of the crushing of the bones of colonialism and imperialism is being heard. This is in violation of international law. Peace seekers of the world have to protest this rude action. Trump’s ingratiation with the Zionist regime and the dangerous game he has begun against the Islamic Republic of Iran shows the depth of the hatred and hostility of the White House officials toward the Iranian nation. As in the past, we support the armed forces of our country against the enmity of the hostile government of the United States.”

You Made a Mistake: Rouhani’s Advisor

Hesamodin Ashna, who is an Iranian politician and advisor to President Hassan Rouhani, similarly censured the measure by the US government. Hesamodin Ashna wrote in his twitter account, “You wanted to weaken and disperse us, but you made a mistake. You succeeded in uniting all of us against yourself.”

‘US Labeling of IRGC Means Branding Iranians Terrorist Nation’

Majid Ansari, an Iranian politician and cleric, who is also a representative to the Assembly of Experts and a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, also condemned labeling of the IRGC as a terrorist group.

“This is the first time that the United States government designates a military force as terror group. Diplomats and judiciary should sue the US government, in particular Donald Trump. “Given the popularity of the Basij forces and the fact that this organisation is part of the IRGC, the US government has in fact called the Iranian nation a terrorist nation. Therefore, from a legal point of view, our government and our parliament should deal with their military forces in the region in the same way,” added Ansari.

Iran FM Pens Letter to UN Chief on US’ Blacklisting of IRGC

The top Iranian diplomat sent a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council, denouncing the US administration’s decision to designate the IRGC a terrorist organization.

Slamming the US government’s “unprecedented, illegal and dangerous” move against an official branch of the Iranian Armed Forces, Zarif said Washington’s “baseless and provocative” decision was a “hostile measure against the Islamic Republic of Iran and a major threat to regional and international peace and security.”

Zarif also denounced the US decision as a “brazen violation of the inalienable principles of the international law and the UN Charter, including the principle of sovereign equality of states.”

The Iranian minister then warned that the US provocative move could heighten tensions to an uncontrollable level and increase the risk of incidents in the region, which he said is already faced with numerous challenges.

The US regime, those expressing overt support for and involvement in the US plan, as well as two or three puppet regimes backing the anti-IRGC action will be fully held accountable for the dire consequences of such adventurous move, Zarif warned.

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Washington is designating the IRGC a foreign “terrorist organization”, marking the first time the US has formally labelled another country’s military a terrorist group.

Responding to the move, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council immediately declared the US as a state sponsor of terrorism and US forces in the region terrorists.

The SNSC said it has put CENTCOM on its terror list as a “reciprocal measure” against the US “illegal and unwise” move.
