Europe Has Until Thursday to Fulfil JCPOA Commitments: Iran

US Seeking to Sow Discord between Iran, Europe: Official

“Our negotiations with Europe are underway, but measures have also been taken on the third step of reducing JCPOA commitments, and we are in final stages of decision-making,” Zarif told reporters in Tehran on Sunday.

“If the Europeans fail to take the required measures by Thursday, we will send a letter to Europe and take the third step based on the decision declared on May 8,” he added.

Zarif at the same time noted that the Islamic Republic has not left the negotiating table and “we are always ready for the implementation of the JCPOA.”

“If the Europeans live up to their commitments, we will resume fulfilling ours,” he said.

Tehran has rowed back on its nuclear commitments twice in compliance with articles 26 and 36 of the 2015 deal.

As a first step Iran increased its enriched uranium stockpile to beyond the 300 kilograms set by the JCPOA.

In the second step, Tehran began enriching uranium to purity rates beyond the JCPOA-limit of 3.76 percent.

Zarif’s comments come as Iran and France are working on an offer proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron in order to save the nuclear deal.

A senior political-economic delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi will travel to Paris on Monday to discuss the French president’s offer.

Araqchi will be accompanied by a team of economic experts from various sectors, and will discuss various aspects of the French offer, according to the Iranian president’s chief of staff, Mahmoud Vaezi.

According to Vaezi, the offer was raised by France two weeks ago, but “Iran has changed considerable parts of it since then.

“The offer is the result of five hours of phone conversations between Iranian and French presidents, and was developed from the talks between them,” he added.

The 2015 nuclear deal is worthless for Iran unless the country can reap its benefits. “Otherwise, it is of no value,” he added.

Iran has already reduced its commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreement in two stages, but it says all the measures are reversible.

The 2015 deal between Iran and six world powers, reached when Donald Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama was in office, was aimed to curb Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of many international sanctions on Tehran.

Iran FM, New Yemeni Ambassador Meet in Tehran

In the meeting, the Yemeni envoy handed over a copy of his credentials to the Iranian top diplomat.

Houthi Ansarullah Movement has appointed al-Dailami to the post in order to boost ties between Yemen and Iran, the group’s chief Abdulmalik al-Houthi said on TV a few days ago.

Al-Houthi said the relationship with Tehran will be better than it was in the past as it’s based on “brotherhood and mutual causes,” such as the Palestinian issue.

Yemen is under a devastating war launched by a Saudi-led coalition in 2015 with the aim of restoring power to fugitive president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

The former government of Hadi had suspended diplomatic relations with Tehran in October 2015, accusing Iran of backing the Ansarullah movement.

Iran Condemns Saudi Airstrikes on Yemeni Prison

In a statement on Sunday, Mousavi said the jail had been recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross, and its representatives had visited the place several times.

“The bombing of the place where prisoners of war were kept is the latest war crime committed by the Saudi-led coalition, and adds another page to the list of the crimes committed by the aggressors,” he said.

The spokesman expressed regret over the latest Saudi crime, and said, “These crimes are committed by those invading Yemen using weapons made by the US and some other Western countries.”

“The Yemeni people will definitely hold these countries accountable for and consider them complicit in these crimes,” he added.

Iran Condemns Saudi Airstrikes on Yemeni PrisonAt least 60 people have been killed and 100 others wounded in the latest Saudi air raids on the jail in Yemen’s western Dhamar Province.

Head of Yemen’s National Committee for Prisoners Affairs Abdul Qader al-Mortada said that the targeted prison housed over 170 prisoners of war, most of whom were supposed to be part of a local exchange deal.

The Saudi-led coalition claimed in a statement on Sunday that its aerial assaults on Dhamar had targeted a military site belonging to the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

It alleged that Houthi fighters had stored drones and air defence systems at the site, and claimed the strikes were “in accordance with international humanitarian law.”

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a deadly war on Yemen in March 2015 in an attempt to reinstall a former regime and eliminate the Houthis, who have been defending the country along with armed forces.

FM Zarif Says US Ban Won’t Silence Him

“The US government’s move to put my name on the sanctions list shows their deep hatred of Iran’s diplomacy and the understandable way in which the Islamic Republic of Iran expresses its viewpoints to the international community,” Zarif said in an interview with the Iran newspaper.

“The Americans believe this sanction can silence me. By God’s grace, they have failed to do so, so far,” he said.

“American journalists and even TV presenters cannot wait to interview me either in Tehran or in Europe. As you saw, two weeks ago I travelled to four countries all of which are either the United States’ military allies or have very close relations with this country and are among Washington’s NATO allies, and the trips continued,” he added.

“I mean I don’t have enough time; If I had, I would have travelled to many other locations. This trend shows the international community has turned a blind eye to the sanctions imposed on me,” Zarif said.

“We can present the country’s official points of view using different methods. This method could be one which is warmly welcomed inside the country, but which is abused by ill-wishers abroad more than it can serve the interests of Iranian people,” he added.

“Because such a method is popular, many of our friends use it,” he noted.

“Also, there is another method which may not be welcomed in the country, but which could help you influence the viewpoints of the other party,” the foreign minister said.

“Although many people in the country criticized my way of holding talks, I tried to choose a method of dialogue outside the country that would be beneficial for realizing the country’s national interests,” he added.

“I think what bothers conservative groups in the United States most is this very method of dialogue that I used. It prompted them to make threats first, and impose sanctions on me afterwards,” the top diplomat noted.

He also touched on the reaction to the US move by diplomatic officials in different circles and in his private meetings.

“First, when the Americans themselves announced it and said the president had ordered sanctions to be imposed on Zarif and that they would slap the sanctions by week’s end, but later, the came under so much pressure and stopped short of imposing sanctions,” he said.

“Mr Pompeo officially announced that Iran’s foreign minister comes here and easily talks to our reporters. He (Pompeo) does not realize that in the world of communications, I can even sit in my home and talk to American journalists, unless they want to violate the basic principles of their own country, and I believe the American community is unlikely to allow them to do so,” said Iran’s foreign minister.

“And when I went to New York, US authorities came to me and said Mr Trump had invited me to the White House to have a meeting with him. At the same time, they said it was decided to put my name on the sanctions list in a matter of two weeks. Of course, they didn’t link these two subjects to each other that much,” he said.

“My interpretation was that if I go talk to him, the minimum outcome would be that I wouldn’t be put on the sanctions list; however, our authorities do not approve of holding talks with American officials at a time when they do not pay much attention to the results of previous negotiations,” Zarif noted.

“Of course, if [Iranian officials] had ordered me to do so, I would have definitely done it despite the fact that such a meeting would incur much domestic pressure,” said the top diplomat.

“But such a move (meeting Trump) was against the policies of the Establishment and the country, and I wouldn’t deem it useful, either, given the circumstances as they had made threats along with giving an offer of talks,” he noted.

Iran’s Diplomacy Successful

The foreign minister further weighed in on some individuals believing that the United States’ recent move amounts to the failure of diplomacy and the option of dialogue.

“Look at the reality in the world. Now, it is the US that has failed, and it is diplomacy that has won,” said the top diplomat.

“Our friends are of the opinion that the United States is the biggest adversary of our country and revolution, but they should see whether or not they were put under sanctions all those years when they chanted slogans against the US and opposed diplomacy. Did the US take any action against them? Was is because the US was scared of them that it did not slap sanctions on them?” he said.

“I don’t like to blow my own horn, but the fact that no sanctions have been imposed on those shouting anti-US slogans shows Washington has no problems with them and what they do is not problematic for the US,” he said.

“[But] What we did created major problems for the United States,” he added.

“Diplomacy has been very successful not because of our extraordinary capabilities, but because our people were efficient,” said Zarif.

“Our people laid the groundwork for us to stand up to 6 major powers and make the Americans feel they have suffered a blow and say this has been the worst deal in history …,” he noted.

Sanctions on Me Show I Had Not Been Pursuing US Policies

He then touched upon reactions inside the country to the performance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the Iranian state radio and TV’s way of covering relevant news.

“Unfortunately, the programs produced at the state radio and TV are not aimed at reviewing foreign policy; rather, they are aimed at dealing a blow to it,” said Iran’s diplomacy chief.

“They must have thought that it would be in their best interests to portray it as a weak point of the Establishment when Iran’s foreign policy secures achievements in the world and when the Zionist regime [of Israel] regards me as a thorn in its eye,” he said.

“This is a lack of appreciation of national pride and dignity. If I were them, I would try to downplay the foreign minister’s errors, not to turn the Foreign Ministry’s accomplishments into errors and hunt the paper tiger every day and tell the people that you should know your foreign minister or diplomacy apparatus has fallen behind the world and retreated, and is not doing well in the world, and that it is others that are deceiving your Foreign Ministry,” he said.

“All around the world they usually try to show that they are doing well, not to launch a smear campaign against their officials,” Zarif explained.

“Now, the whole world is saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s diplomacy has been successful; Mr. Trump himself says he has watched two minutes of the Iranian foreign minister’s interview and believes the US delegation won’t be able to handle talks with him,” he added.

“The same Mr. Trump who has said the US has spent $7 trillion in the region and still failed is saying that the JCPOA was a major deception for the US,” said Zarif.

“We accept part of Trump’s comments, but regard the other part as untrue. Go see for yourself that the whole world is saying that Iran was successful with regards to the JCPOA,” he said.

“I don’t know how long these folks are going to question the achievements of the country. If [as some people say] I had been pursuing the Americans’ line, then why did the US slap sanctions on me?” he asked rhetorically.

“How is it that none of them and none of those involved in negotiations before me was put under sanctions, and why was it only me that was put under sanctions?” he said.

“If [as some people say] I had been enforcing the United States’ orders, then why were they (those criticizing Zarif) not put under sanctions and why were sanctions imposed on me, only?” said Zarif.

Streets of Iranian Village Named after Literary Masterpieces

A neighbourhood named “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” a best-selling novel written by Gabriel García Márquez.

The Tajabad Sofla (Rasoolabad) village is located in the town of Bahar in Hamadan province. The village lies near the road from Hamadan to Kermanshah.

A library there with some 6,000 volumes of books together with villagers’ enthusiasm for reading prompted the idea of naming alleys and passageways in the village after books written by globally recognized figures. The idea was warmly welcomed by locals, and 30 alleys and passageways in the village were named after prominent figures.

The names were chosen based on the environment of the village as well as people’s vote.

What follows are IRNA’s photos of the street and alley signs:

Iran Unveils New Strike Drones with High-Speed Tracking

The unmanned aerial vehicle, dubbed Kian, was inaugurated in the presence of Commander of the Iranian Army’s Air Defense Force Brigadier General Alireza Sabahi-Fardand and other senior commanders on Sunday.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Sabahi-Fard said that Kian had been designed in two types: one with high-speed capability for tracking and identification purposes and the other built for long-haul flights to conduct precision-strike operations.

Sabahi-Fard said the drone was designed, produced, and tested by experts at the drone unit of the Iranian Army’s Air Defense Force.

The long-haul vehicle, he said, is capable of hitting targets far from Iran’s borders and engaging in defense on hostile territory.

Iran has made major breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing military equipment and hardware despite facing sanctions and Western economic pressure.

The Islamic Republic says its military power is solely for defensive purposes and does not pose any threat to other countries.

On June 20, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) shot down an advanced US-made RQ-4 Global Hawk over the territorial waters off the coastal province of Hormozgan.

The unmanned US aircraft was brought down by Iran’s indigenous Khordad 3 air defense system after it breached the country’s airspace on a spying mission.

Iran Naval Forces Start War Game in Caspian Sea

The drills, dubbed “Sustainable Security 2019”, were started on Sunday morning in the presence of various vessels and aerial units of the Iranian Army’s Navy.

“The maneuver…totally aims to achieve and preserve collective security, and it is natural that preparedness of forces, as well as [military] equipment and weapons must be maintained at a meaningful level in order to ensure security,” Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said on Saturday.

He added that the sustainability of the maneuver, dubbed Sustainable Security and Power in the Caspian Sea, hinges on the combat preparedness of the forces and cooperation of neighboring countries.

The Iranian commander stressed the importance of maintaining the naval forces’ combat readiness in the Caspian Sea in order to prevent possible emergence of global terrorism.

He noted that the drill would be held “independently” within the framework of an agreement among neighboring countries’ naval forces.

Iran’s Navy makes efforts to maintain security in the Caspian Sea and underscores that the security of the world’s largest inland body should be preserved by its littoral states, he added.

“Based on the agreements made, no country outside the region should be present in the Caspian Sea at all,” Khanzadi pointed out.

Iranian Delegation Due in Paris to Discuss Macron’s Offer

Azerbaijan-Armenia Peace Deal Based on Iran’s Proposal: Araqchi

According to Mahmoud Vaezi, the Iranian delegation will be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi.

Araqchi will be accompanied by a team of economic experts from various sectors, and will discuss various aspects of the French offer, Vaezi noted.

“An offer was exchanged between Iran and France two weeks ago. We have changed considerable parts of the offer shared with us,” Vaezi said Saturday night.

“The offer is the result of five hours of phone conversations between Iranian and French presidents, and was developed from the talks between them,” he added.

According to Vaezi, the 2015 nuclear deal is worthless to Iran unless the country can reap its benefits. “Otherwise, it is of no value.”

The official’s remarks came shortly after a phone conversation between Rouhani and Macron, in which the former warned that the Islamic Republic will go ahead with the third step of rolling back its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal in coming days if Europe fails to carry out its duties.

He also stressed that the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers cannot be re-negotiated and all sides must comply with it.

The Iranian President once again reiterated that any further talks depend on the complete removal of anti-Iran sanctions.

Macron, in turn, hailed Iran’s commitment to further talks, and called for continued negotiations for the resolution of the issues.

He also noted that Paris is following up the political and economic problems with regard to Tehran.

Tehran has already reduced its commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreement in two stages however saying that all the measures are reversible.

The 2015 deal between Iran and six world powers, reached when Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama was in office, was aimed to curb Iran’s disputed uranium enrichment programme in exchange for the lifting of many international sanctions on Tehran.

Iranian Students Win Title in US Aeronautics Competitions

The Iranian “ShadX” team, consisting of 11 students form Sharif University of Technology, won the title in the Graduate Team Aircraft Design Competition.

The Iranian students from the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of Sharif University have created a unique design a 4-seat VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, dubbed “Esperichew” (means sparrow in a dialect spoken in Iran’s Kerman).

The unique air taxi designed by the Iranian students is equipped with eight engines, including four tilt-rotors that enable the aircraft to take off or land vertically.

Esperichew is designed to carry a pilot and three passengers in the first phase, but will be modified to become a pilotless aircraft after five years.

The air taxi weighs 1,950 kilograms and could be used for urban travels within a range of 100 miles.

Designing modern air taxis is a big challenge faced even by the aerospace giants, including Boeing and Airbus.

According to IRNA, “Faras”, another team from Sharif University had already come first in the design competitions back in June, but had to present the design through webinar because it could not travel to the US.

This is the third year that a team from Sharif University of Technology has ranked at the design section of the AIAA competitions.
