No Evidence Iran Covering Up Severity of Coronavirus Crisis: WHO

Iran Starts Phase Two of National Campaign against COVID-19

Speaking in a televised interview with the CNBC news channel on Monday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the organization, said the WHO’s fact-checking mechanisms have not found any concrete proof that Iran had been covering up the severity of the epidemic.

Asked about the media hype revolving around Iran and accusing the country of covering up the severity of the new coronavirus epidemic, the WHO chief said, “I wouldn’t frame any country without any reason or without having any fact.”

“There are reports that come from the media… but this is the WHO, you know, this is a technical organization and should check the facts. We cannot say what journalists say,” he added.

“I say if we followed journalists’ reports, whether it’s well done or not, then where we end.”

He concluded by saying, “That’s why we have our own mechanism and from our own mechanism we haven’t seen that, but if we see, then of course we should address it.”

The virus that emerged in the central city of Wuhan in China’s Hubei Province late last year has so far claimed more than 3,000 lives worldwide.

In Iran, it has claimed 66 lives and infected 1,501 others, 291 of whom have recovered.

Iranian medical officials have assured that the country will contain the outbreak, noting that the condition of most of the patients diagnosed with the virus has improved.

The country has mobilized all its resources to confront the disease, with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and Iran’s Army being the latest to join the campaign Sunday.

Iran has, meanwhile, announced the closure of schools and universities throughout the upcoming days, and health centers have been tasked with distributing protective items, such as facemasks, among the public.

The coronavirus, known as COVID-19, is an illness characterized by fever and coughing and in serious cases causes shortness of breath or pneumonia.

Participants in the meeting also examined the latest activities for allaying the concerns of Iran’s foreign trade partners.

Moreover, a series of decisions were made in the meeting to facilitate the cross-border travels and the trade interaction with the neighboring countries.

Director of the public relations department of Imam Khomeini International Airport told Fars that a cargo plane carrying 7.5 tonnes of medical and protective equipment necessary for the fight against COVID-19 has landed in the airport on Monday.

The medical aid has been provided by the World Health Organization.

Ali Kashani Heidari said the WHO representatives have also arrived in Iran to examine the status of the country’s efforts to handle the coronavirus outbreak.

He noted that the aid shipment supplied by the WHO includes medical and protective equipment for more than 15,000 persons, and involves coronavirus test kits for screening of 100,000 people.

Iran Says US Sabotaging Swiss ‘Humanitarian’ Channel

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi speaks to reporters through video conference on Monday, March 2, 2020. He held his press conference through video connection for the fear of coronavirus

Addressing a video press conference on Monday, Mousavi said that while sabotaging the channel, the US issues propaganda about its willingness to help Iran with COVID-19.

“We suspect the US intentions. If they had good intentions, they would have notified us before publicizing the issue. We see how hard they try to weaken our public morale by the means of fake news and statistics. As we suspect their intentions, we do not count on their help.”

Pointing to the Chinese government’s aid for Iran with the furiously spreading COVID-19, Mr. Mousavi hailed the country as a “friend” of Iran”, and said that “several cargoes and specialized teams have been dispatched [from there] to Iran,” and the Chinese “put their latest findings at Iran’s disposal.”

About the recent US-Taliban deal the official stressed that “all the roads to peace pass through an intra-Afghan consensus … led by their government … We support any efforts fostering the country’s stability. But we suspect the US intentions. The very presence of the US in the region is unlawful.”

“For some reasons, Iran has had contacts with Taliban with the knowledge of Afghan government … We go on with our talks with Taliban, with the [US-Taliban deal] having no impact on them,” Mousavi added.

As regards the bombardment by Turkey of Iranian advisory bases in Syria, he said “we have voiced our concerns and the solution to the current issue in Idlib is an immediate ceasefire and sticking to the Astana Process.”

Answering a question about the French starting its activities within the military coalition in the Persian Gulf, the spokesman did not name France specifically, but described “any foreign presence in the Persian Gulf region” as “not constructive and “causing insecurity and instability.”

“For thousands of years we have provided the security of this critical waterway with the help of the regional countries.”

Hotels Close in Yazd by Choice amid COVID-19 Outbreak

Hotels Close in Yazd by Choice amid COVID-19 Outbr

Although the economic recession has made it necessary for the hotel owners to make the most of the tourist industry even in the off-season, the hotels in Iran’s central city of Yazd have closed voluntarily after the outbreak of COVID-19.

In a statement, the hotel owners in Yazd said the decision on the closure of hotels, inns and ecotourism hotels has been made by choice and without receiving any decree or order from the officials.

In an interview with ISNA, president of the Society of Hotel Owners of Yazd Province said the decision has been made only to protect the health of people and prevent travels to Yazd.

Amir Nasser Tabatabaee said the closure of hotels is expected to reduce the number of tourists traveling to Yazd, noting that, in the meantime, the hotels will be disinfected and the staff will also receive training.

In separate comments, Ali Dad, the owner of a hotel in Yazd, said although the occupancy rate of hotels has already experienced a dramatic decline, such a weeklong closure of the hotels in the historical city signifies that the health of people and the hotel staff has priority over economic profits.

“Despite the emphases on not travelling, we were still seeing travels to our province from various places, and there were concerns that the presence of these tourists would pave the way for the outbreak of coronavirus in Yazd. As a result, we are refusing to accept guests this week,” Dad added.

The hotel owner finally noted that it is not clear whether the closures will extend into the next weeks, saying any decision about keeping the hotels shut will be made later.
