Iran Sympathizes with Japan over Deadly Flood, Landslide

In a statement on Monday, Mousavi offered sympathy to the Japanese nation and government and the bereaved families of the victims.

Dozens of people are now confirmed or presumed dead amid floods and landslides triggered by torrential downpours on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu. The bad conditions are hampering search and rescue operations.

Scores of people remained stranded in southern Japan on Sunday after heavy rain the day before caused deep flooding and mudslides that left at least 34 people confirmed or presumed dead.

Floodwaters from the Kuma River inundated many houses, buildings and vehicles, causing people to climb onto roofs and wait for rescue.

More than 40,000 soldiers, coast guard personnel and fire brigades are taking part in search and rescue operations.

MPs May Oblige Iran Gov’t to Stop Implementing Additional Protocol

MP Ali Khezrian told Fars News Agency on Sunday that 200 lawmakers have endorsed the motion and submitted it to the parliament’s presiding board, according to which President Rouhani should appear before the legislature to answer questions on his government’s failure to control the fluctuation in housing market and the price of basic commodities.

In the motion, the lawmakers have cited the Article 88 of the Constitution to question the president on five main topics, including the rial’s decline and the dramatic rise in the foreign currency rates, the uncontrolled housing and automobile markets, such as the soaring inflation in the price of housing that has reached several hundred percent in the past couple of years.

The MPs also want to ask the president where in the 2015 nuclear agreement his government had made a “strategic mistake” that the US could easily withdraw from the JCPOA without paying any price and the Europeans are also rudely urging Iran to remain committed to the nuclear deal without honoring theirs.

The motion also includes questions about the administration’s failure to provide decent financial support for the businesses affected by the coronavirus outbreak as well as the ambiguities in disbursement of subsidized foreign currency for various sectors and the effects of such allocation of funds on inflation.

In comments on Sunday, President Rouhani blamed the recent fluctuations in foreign currency prices on “a complicated psychological operation” launched by the enemies aimed at undermining Iran’s oil-free economy through intensified pressures.

The president had announced in June that the fluctuations in the foreign currency market were temporary and had no fundamental economic reason.

The Iranian rial has fallen to its lowest ever rate against the US dollar on the unofficial market in recent days.

Over 200,000 Patients Recover from COVID-19 in Iran

In her press briefing on Sunday, Sima-Sadat Lari said 163 people have also died of the virus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities to 11,571.

She also confirmed 2,560 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus, raising the total number of cases to 240,438.3,168 patients are also in severe conditions of the disease, she added.

Lari noted that 1,794,727 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country.

According to Lari, East Azarbaijan, West Azarbaijan, Kermanshah, Khuzestan, Hormozgan, Bushehr, Kurdistan, Khorasan Razavi, and Ilam provinces are considered as red zones.

Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri said the country will unveil those cities when needed.
“We have floating missile-launching cities, and we will unveil them whenever we deem it advisable,” said admiral Tangsiri, the commander of the Naval Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

He then touched upon some of the accomplishments achieved by the IRGC. He said the force managed to develop equipment, including missiles and vessels, despite sanctions.

He then warned that Iran will be present wherever Americans are present.

He once again stressed that the security of the Persian Gulf should be ensured by regional countries.

Speaking at the parliament floor on Sunday, Mohammad Javad Zarif said Washington is also trying to view economy through a security lens.

“In this full-scale war, the United States wants to do several things the most important of which is to create a concept, i.e., portray Iran as a security threat. After it features Iran as a threat to security, then the issue of Iran becomes the topic of discussion at locations and domains where the US dominates such as the UN Security Council,” he said.

“Or the US wants to drag the issue into the security domains of economy, so that it can deal security blows to global economy,” Zarif added.
He said the United States’ second strategy was to build a consensus against Iran.

“From January 2018 until last week, four UN Security Council meetings were held in a bid to put pressure on Iran,” said the top diplomat.

“One meeting was aimed at supporting riots, the second was chaired by Pompeo, the third meeting was attended by Trump and the last meeting was attended by me and Pompeo. The US was isolated in all those meetings because in all of them USSC members stressed the need to preserve the JCPOA and reiterated that the US is pursuing a wrong policy,” Zarif added.

He said Washington’s third objective is to tell fabricated stories about Iran, adding, “We should notice what the United States’ goal of this game is and we should take care not to get involved in this game.”

Zarif noted the US is also trying to pressurize Iran’s friends and target the country’s interests in the region.

“We should pay attention to that matter as well,” he added.

Zarif said the White House seeks to drive a wedge between Iranian people and the Establishment, and seeks to create the impression that the Islamic Republic’s System is inefficient.

“They want to delegitimize the Establishment,” he said.

Zarif further noted that the United States has misgivings over the emergence of countries such as China and other emerging countries.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the foreign minister said Iran should reach out to its neighbours and make them realize that the Islamic Republic is a source of security, stability and development in the region.

Consignment of Transit Goods from Afghanistan Shipped to India via Iran

The consignment was sent to India through Shahid Beheshti port in Chabahar in line with a trilateral agreement signed by Iran, India and Afghanistan.

During the transit operations, as many as 30 refrigerated containers and nine ordinary ones all of which contained transit commodities coming from Afghanistan and destined for the Indian ports of Mundra and Nhava Sheva were loaded onto a vessel and shipped out to India, said a ports and maritime official.

“This is the first time that a container ship only carries container goods when leaving Shahid Beheshti port in Chabahar in keeping with the implementation of a trilateral deal between India,

Afghanistan and Iran,” the official added.

Iran Warns COVID-19 Patients against Hiding Their Infection

Addressing a meeting of the National Headquarters of Fight against Coronavirus on Saturday, President Hassan Rouhani said a plan should be drawn up to tackle the problem.

“Here, I’m telling the Health Committee and the Social-Security Committee to do something and present a plan about those who hide their disease, so that it could be approved at our meetings,” he said.

“Hiding one’s infection is regarded as encroaching upon others’ rights. In other words, some people hide their disease from their family or friends or colleagues or a stranger in the street, approach them and talk to them even without wearing masks,” he noted.

The president said those infected should wear masks, at least.

“At least, I must wear a mask if I’m infected. In the first place, I mustn’t leave home, and if I have to go out, I must wear a mask, observe social distancing and tell the other person not to get close to me. There’s nothing wrong with it. We should institutionalize this culture,” he said.

He underlined all those who have contracted the disease should inform people around them of their infection.

“At workplace and elsewhere as well as places of gathering, all infected people must tell others that they have contracted the disease, and if somebody has found out that another person is infected, they should reveal it, so that we will be able to get through this problem,” he said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, President Rouhani underlined that wearing masks in public places will be obligatory as of July 5, 2020. He said health protocols should also be observed as before.

“As of tomorrow (July 5, 2020), it will be compulsory to wear masks at roofed public places, so services should not be offered to people not wearing masks. This applies to all places where it is obligatory to wear masks. All of us should observe the protocol, and we should all help one another,” he said.

Iran, UNICEF to Work Together to Contain Coronavirus Pandemic

Iran, UNICEF Sign Cooperation Deal

The issue was discussed in a joint online meeting attended by Deputy Iranian Minister of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare Ahmad Meidari, and UNICEF representative Mandeep O’Brien.

During the discussions, the Iranian official touched upon the programs approved for 2019-2020, including a plan to establish a national system to eliminate poverty among both children and adults, a real-time monitoring program for children and a plan on offering technical support for designing systems as well as child-based social support programs.

He said the ministry is also going to conduct surveys on children deprived of education and food security as well as financial support for pregnant women and malnourished mothers breastfeeding babies.

The UNICEF official, in turn, appreciated cooperation by different Iranian institutions to provide medicines and hygienic items, expressing its readiness for any kind of cooperation with regards to social support amid the coronavirus pandemic.
