GCC Chief’s Anti-Iran Stance Not Shared by All Members: Tehran

“Saudi Arabia sent a letter to the UN Security Council expressing support for the extension of an arms embargo on the Islamic Republic of Iran most probably without the coordination of other GCC members,” said Seyyed Abbas Mousavi on Monday.

“According to informed sources, the letter signed by the GCC secretary general on Sunday and handed over to UN Security Council member states had been written without some GCC members being privy to the contents of the letter,” he added.
“We seek cooperation with regional countries, including GCC member states, and we presented the Hormuz peace plan in line with the same policy,” he said.
“Meanwhile, it would be unacceptable to hear [some countries expressing] concern over the lifting of an arms embargo on Iran. We believe it is you that have turned the region into a depot of Western and American weapons, and if someone is supposed to express concern, that will be Iran,” he noted.
The spokesman said the GCC secretary general was, in fact, “kissing up to the US” by expressing misgivings over the lifting of the arms ban on Iran.
“Some GCC member states may adopt a position against this letter,” Mousavi said.

Hook’s Resignation Triggered by Failure of Anti-Iran Efforts: Analyst

In an interview with Etemad newspaper, Kourosh Ahmadi weighed in on the reasons behind Brian Hook’s recent resignation from his position at the US State Department.

“There are no signs indicating that Hook’s resignation was due to differences between the State Department and the White House,” said the analyst.

“Pompeo is one of [US President Donald] Trump’s few associates who, at least tactically speaking, are on board with Trump, and who has had a free hand in putting pressure on Iran over the past two years,” the expert noted.

He said there are no signs, either, that would indicate any differences between Trump, Pompeo and Hook over Iran.

“Of course, it is a significant issue that Hook’s efforts against Iran failed to produce any tangible results and to bring Iran even one step closer to the negotiating table, which may be among the reasons behind his disappointment with making headway with his work which led to his resignation,” he noted.

The analyst touched upon Brian Hook’s consultations with different countries against Iran over the past weeks.

“One may specifically guess that Hook stepped down as he fell into despair after the failure of attempts by him and his superiors to win the approval of UN Security Council members to renew the arms embargo,” he said.

He said Hook travelled to 11 countries over the past month to talk the officials of those countries into supporting the extension of an arms embargo on Iran.

“While China and Russia stress that they are opposed to the extension of the embargo, most of the United States’ European allies have shown no signs, either, that suggest they see eye to eye with Washington. All this comes as the existing window to that is closing,” said the expert.

“In accordance with Resolution 2231, arms embargoes [on Iran] will be lifted on October 18, i.e., a little more than two months from now. The trend of discussions at the UN Security Council and putting to vote a US-drafted resolution on the extension of the embargoes may take two to three weeks,” he said.

He also touched upon a possible change in Washington’s approach on Iran with the resignation of Hook.

“It is unlikely that Hook’s resignation and replacing him with a more radical person would mean a change for the better in US policy on Iran,” he added.

Iran Urges UNSC to Show Its Independence on Arms Embargo Vote

‘US Bid to Restore UN Sanctions on Iran Has Dire Legal Consequences’

In a tweet on Monday, the Iranian president’s chief of staff Mahmoud Vaezi said the upcoming session of the UN Security Council to vote on the US-drafted resolution is a “big test” for the Council’s member states.

“The member states of the Security Council are on the verge of a big test to show their independence by giving a negative vote to the US regime’s pressures, which are aimed at imposing its will against Iran, violating the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and leading the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) to collapse,” he said.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that the United Nations Security Council will vote this week on a US bid to extend the arms embargo on Iran, despite warnings by some diplomats that the measure lacks support.

“We have an objective to extend the arms embargo,” Brian Hook, special envoy for Iran, told reporters in a press call Thursday morning. “That can be done the easy way or it can be done the hard way, but it’s going to be extended.”

If the United States is unsuccessful in extending the embargo, it has threatened to trigger a return of all UN sanctions on Iran under a process agreed in the 2015 deal.

The US has been lobbying for months to get an extension of the Iran arms embargo, which expires in October as one of the conditions of the 2015 Obama-era Iran nuclear deal- formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

But this week’s Security Council resolution is likely to fail. Even if the US is able to drum up the nine votes for it to pass the chamber, it would likely face a veto from China and Russia.
In May, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani threatened a “crushing response” if the embargo on Iranian trade of conventional arms was extended.

Iran Reports 189 New COVID-19 Deaths in 24 Hours

424 More Iranians Die of Coronavirus: Ministry

In a press briefing on Monday, Sima-Sadat Lari confirmed 2,132 new cases of COVID-19 infection, raising the total number of infections to 328,844.

The spokeswoman said 286,642 patients have so far recovered from COVID-19, but 3,992 are still in critical conditions because of more severe infection.

Lari added that so far 2,711,817 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country.
She said the high-risk “red” zones include Tehran, Mazandaran, East Azarbaijan, Isfahan, Ardabil, Khorasan Razavi, North Khorasan, Gilan, Alborz, Semnan, Golestan, Markazi, Kerman, and Yazd provinces.

The “orange” zones also include West Azarbaijan, Bushehr, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Hormozgan, Zanjan, Hamadan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Lorestan, Ilam, Fars, Qazvin, and Qom provinces, according to the spokeswoman.

Iran Hails Global Solidarity with Lebanese after Beirut Blast

President Hassan Rouhani once again expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Iranian government and people over the Beirut disaster, and said the global solidarity with the Lebanese indicates a sense of conscience and altruism within the human community.

At least 158 people are confirmed to have lost their lives, while more than 6,000 others were wounded in the powerful explosion that ripped through the Beirut port on Tuesday.

The number of fatalities and those hurt is set to rise as search and rescue operations are still underway.

The blast took place in Beirut port warehouses storing highly explosive material, specifically ammonium nitrate, commonly used in both fertilizer and bombs

The blast — one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions the world has ever seen — flattened much of the strategic port and left buildings in ruin and left hundreds of thousands of Lebanese homeless.

On Saturday, angry anti-government protesters filled downtown Beirut and stormed government buildings, calling for justice for the blast victims and demanding the resignation of the entire ruling class.

Police fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds. Nearly 730 people were wounded in the clashes and a police officer was reported to have been killed.

Iran Rejects GCC’s ‘Irresponsible’ Statement

Iran Condemns Expansion of EU, US Sanctions on Syria

The reaction by Seyyed Abbas Mousavi came after the GCC’s Secretariat announced that the council’s newly appointed secretary general had demanded an arms embargo on Iran be extended and levelled several accusations against the Islamic Republic.

In comments on Sunday, Mousavi expressed regret at the unconstructive approach adopted by certain GCC members vis-à-vis the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“Unfortunately, it seems that the so-called Persian Gulf Cooperation Council has turned into a spokesperson for some narrow-minded people both inside the council and outside the region, and that the council’s secretariat, swayed by the wrong and destructive policies and behaviour of certain member states, has turned into a mouthpiece for anti-Iran elements,” said the spokesman.

“The GCC, which is at the apex of its incompetence, and whose internecine differences as well as unrealistic policies have rendered the council ineffective, has, with this move, led to ignoring realities in the region and turning a blind eye to realities and priorities at this sensitive juncture,” Mousavi noted.

“The irresponsible statement by the secretary general has been dictated and issued unilaterally at a time when some members of the council have not stopped purchasing and stockpiling weapons even at a time of economic problems, and are among the biggest buyers of arms in the region and in the world,” he added.

“Indubitably, the United States’ interests are contingent upon further sales of weapons to these countries with such approaches and empty claims,” he said.

“The killing of defenceless people and children in Yemen is a textbook example of wrong policies adopted by certain GCC members, which have resulted in Yemeni people being killed every day before the eyes of the world by different Western weapons by leaders of this very council,” he said.

Rouhani Urges ‘Golden Mean’ between Strict, Lax COVID-19 Restrictions

President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that strict restrictions will make people depressed, though restrictions should remain in place to help contain the coronavirus pandemic.

“We should follow the golden mean as it is impossible to keep stringent restrictions in place and we cannot completely shut down economic, educational and cultural activities. But at the same time they cannot remain fully open as they were before the coronavirus outbreak,” he noted at a meeting of the National Coronavirus Headquarters.

The president further urged people to keep observing health protocols, namely respect social distancing rules, wear masks and avoid mass gatherings.

He underlined the need to deal with those who do not observe health protocols and commit offences.
He also called on people to avoid nonessential travel to help stem the spread of the virus.

The president underlined that coronavirus is here to stay for at least six months or one year, adding health protocols must be observed in order to tackle the disease until a vaccine is developed for the virus.
