Iran Urges Saudis to Stop Blame Game If They Seek Nukes

Iran Urges Saudis to Stop Blame Game If They Seek Nukes

In two tweets posted late on Tuesday, Kazem Gharibabadi responded to recent anti-Iranian remarks by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir, who told the DPA news agency in a recent interview that the kingdom “reserves the right” to arm itself with nuclear weapons if Iran cannot be stopped from making one.

“Scapegoating and fearmongering are two common and classic methods used by demagogues!” Gharibabadi wrote.

“If you want to pursue a nuclear weapon program, or you are seeking for an excuse to justify your lack of cooperation with the IAEA or your outdated safeguard system, at least have the courage to admit it and pay the price for it, don’t blame your wrongdoings on others by lies,” he added.

Riyadh’s nuclear ambitions have become a source of heightened concern for the global community in recent years, especially after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman first hinted in 2018 that the kingdom may go for nukes.

During a trip to the US in mid-March 2018, the heir to the Saudi throne said if Iran develops a nuclear bomb, “we will follow suit as soon as possible.”

The kingdom has so far kept its nuclear activities secret, defying calls for it to implement the IAEA’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreements, a system of inspection and verification of the peaceful uses of nuclear materials.

Reports about Saudi Arabia’s undeclared nuclear activities were confirmed earlier this year by satellite images, which showed a large compound in a suspicious location in the heart of the desert.

Citing Western officials, The Wall Street Journal reported in early August that Saudi Arabia, with Chinese help, has built a facility for extraction of yellowcake from uranium ore near the remote town of al-Ula.

The New York Times also said American intelligence agencies had spotted what appeared to be an undeclared nuclear site not too far from the town of al-Uyaynah, located 30 kilometers northwest of Riyadh, and its Solar Village.

The agencies, the report said, are scrutinizing attempts by the kingdom to build up ability to produce nuclear fuel that could potentially lead to the development of nuclear weapons.

Unlike Saudi Arabia, Iran showed the peaceful nature of its nuclear program to the world by signing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with six world states — namely the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China — in 2015. The nuclear deal was also ratified in the form of a UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

The US, however, unilaterally pulled out of the deal and re-imposed unilateral sanctions against Tehran in a move supported by the regimes in Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Tehran remained fully compliant with the JCPOA for an entire year as confirmed by the IAEA, waiting for the co-signatories to fulfill their end of the bargain, but as the European parties failed to do so, it moved in May 2019 to suspend parts of its commitments with the Agency’s supervision under Articles 26 and 36 of the deal covering Tehran’s legal rights.

Iran says its retaliatory measures are reversible as soon as the other sides fulfill their contractual obligations.

Iran, US to Move towards ‘Atmosphere of Opportunities’ with Biden: Rouhani

Iran, US to Move towards ‘Atmosphere of Opportunities’ with Biden

“We feel the country’s situation will be better in the future,” Rouhani said in a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday.

“Some think when we say things will get better, we mean [we are going to hold] negotiation with the US; no, that’s not true,” he added.

Rouhani said the incoming US administration itself will return the situation to a rule-based one.

“With the conditions expected to be created in the future, we will move away from the atmosphere of threat created by this rogue government [of Donald Trump], and will move toward an atmosphere of opportunities,” he added.

The Iranian president said a government of bullying confronted Iran in the past few years through its economic war, economic siege, and economic terrorism.

“The US managed to pressure the Iranian nation in the economic sector, and our people faced problems. But still they failed to achieve their main goal, which was to create famine in the country and disrupt our national security,” he added.

He described the US administration as a criminal and terrorist one, criticizing those who glorify the American government in preparation for their own campaign in Iran’s 2021 presidential election.

He urged them not to ignore the realities and avoid glorifying the US for free.

“Trump’s expectation was that all countries would follow suit after the US’ withdrawal from the JCPOA, but no country, even the Europeans who used to be America’s friends, obeyed this decision,” Rouhani said.

Rouhani said all the US’ anti-Iran plans failed at international bodies, and it even failed to prevent the removal of anti-Iran arms embargo.

“Those who ask what has been done by this [Iranian] government must know that today the arms embargo against Iran is over, and the US has totally failed in achieving its international, political, legal, and ethical objectives,” Rouhani noted.
The Iranian president said the Islamic Republic managed to maintain its constructive interaction with the world and play its role in regional equations despite all the political and economic pressure imposed by the US over all these years.

“We repeatedly emphasized the incoming US administration will have no choice but to return to law and submit to the Iranian nation, because everyone – from Democrat to Republican – know the fact that the US’ maximum pressure against Iran has failed,” he added.

US Must Lift All Sanctions If Wants to Rejoin JCPOA: Iran FM

Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday that Washington should also deliver on its obligations under the deal.

“It is very good that Biden wants to return to the JCPOA, but part of that would be for the US, as a UN member, to live up to its commitments,” he said in an interview with Iran newspaper.

“They should lift sanctions and stop the destructive measures that [Donald] Trump has adopted,” said Zarif.

“If the US implements UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and if sanctions are lifted and are not an obstacle to Iran’s economic activities, then Iran, as it has announced, will fulfill its commitments under the JCPOA. This doesn’t need negotiations,” he noted.

He said Iran will immediately return to its obligations under the JCPOA if Biden makes good on Washington’s commitments under the deal.

Zarif underlined that Tehran has never been, and is not opposed to negotiations.

“Talks are possible within the framework of the 5+1 group,” said the top diplomat.

“If the US wants to rejoin the JCPOA from which Trump withdrew, we will be ready to hold talks on how the United States should enter the agreement,” Zarif said.

He said there are some people inside Iran who send wrong messages to the US.

“Due to political concerns inside the country which I think are completely unwarranted, some political factions are worried that these negotiations might start now,” he noted.

“My prediction is that the conditions will get much better by God’s grace and with Iranian people’s continued resistance and proper understanding,” he said.

Zarif said Biden can repeal the measures adopted by the Trump administration.

“If Mr. Biden becomes US president and takes the rein at the White House, he can revoke all these with three executive orders,” the top Iranian diplomat said.

“It is not right to say the next US president won’t be able to lift some of the United States’ sanctions previously removed under the JCPOA,” he said, adding, “We should not accept such words.”

He noted that the US cannot use its own domestic laws as a pretext to not deliver on its international commitments.

“No country in the world can use domestic tools in order not to fulfill its international obligations,” Zarif noted.

Iranian People’s Resistance in Economic War Bears Fruit: President

President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday the government, with the support and cooperation of people, did not allow those who imposed sanctions on the country to achieve their evil objectives.

He then touched upon the national spending package for the next Iranian calendar Year.

“Based on the plans drawn up, the country’s economic situation will improve,” he said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the president said the government will support individuals the closure of whose businesses due to the coronavirus pandemic will harm them financially.

President Rouhani added a new round of restrictions will be imposed to help contain the COVID-19 outbreak and protect people’s health and lives.

Iran Summons Italian Ambassador over Canada’s Anti-Tehran Stance

Iran Condemns Bahrain’s Plan to Normalize Relations with Israel

In a meeting on Tuesday, the director general for US affairs at the Iranian foreign ministry conveyed to the top Italian diplomat Iran’s strong protest at the Canadian government’s anti-human rights behaviour and its hypocrisy with regards to the civil and consular rights of Iranian nationals living in Canada.

The Italian ambassador was reminded that more than 400,000 Iranian expatriates in Canada have been deprived of receiving consular services over the past few years following the severance of ties between Iran and Canada.

The Iranian official also dismissed as unacceptable and contrary to Ottawa’s human rights claims the Canadian government’s continued disregard for Iran’s requests for the establishment of a consular office or an interests section, and Canada’s dodging this humanitarian responsibility.

The Iranian official also expressed Iran’s strong protest at other actions taken by the Canadian government.

“Moreover, the Canadian government has turned this country into a safe haven for economic and financial offenders of the world, and keeps shirking the responsibility for prosecuting, arresting and extraditing criminals such as Mahmoud-Reza Khavari, who lives in Canada like an ordinary citizen despite having embezzled $2.6 billion,” said the Iranian official.

“This comes as Khavari is on the Interpol’s Red Alert List, and the Canadian government is obliged to cooperate with Interpol to look into the issue and extradite Khavari,” he added.

The Italian ambassador was also reminded that these are only two examples of the Canadian government’s anti-rights actions, and that Canada’s continued politically-motivated approaches will question its competence as a country which claims to advocate human rights while criticizing the status of human rights in other countries.

First Iranian ID Card Issued for Child Born to Iranian Mother, Foreign Father

Tt“After years of efforts and ups and downs, finally the first child born to an Iranian mother managed to obtain the Iranian residency through the mother,” Ali Rabiei said in a weekly press briefing on Tuesday.

“We congratulate all Iranian mothers, either those with a non-Iranian spouse or others, as this is a kind of social protection for the community of women,” he noted.

The spokesman also noted that the move indicates the government’s serious resolve to protecting citizens’ rights for Iranian women.

In October 2019, the Guardian Council ratified a bill proposed by the government of President Hassan Rouhani to amend the law on passing citizenship to the children born to an Iranian mother and a foreign father regardless of where they are born.

According to article one of the law, children of Iranian mothers and non-Iranian fathers who were born before or after the law can obtain the Iranian citizenship upon the mother’s request, provided that they have no security problem before the age of 18.

These children, after reaching the age of 18, can apply for the Iranian citizenship themselves, if not requested by the mother, and will then be granted the Iranian citizenship in case of no security problem.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has welcomed the law as a step toward reducing statelessness around the world.

Iran Starts Mass Producing 20-Minute COVID-19 Test

Iran Starts Mass Producing 20-Minute COVID-19 Test

The mass production of the new tests, which can show on-the-spot results in 15-20 minutes, was started in a Tuesday ceremony attended by Iranian First Vice-President Es’haq Jahangiri in Tehran.

As in the PCR tests, a nasopharyngeal swab sample is collected from the potential patient in order to diagnose any infection with the novel coronavirus using these new tests.

However, the rapid test does not need the special standards, specialized labs, complicated and expensive equipment, and more importantly skilled and experienced technical staff required in the PCR tests.

The antigen test for rapid diagnosis of COVID-19 requires much simpler and cheaper equipment and facilities.

The standards of the sampling centre are usually enough for taking these new tests, according to Siamak Samiei, the director general of Health Reference Laboratory Research Centre of the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
Sajjad Moravveji, the managing director of Salamat Electronic Barkat company, said on the margins of the Tuesday ceremony that the new kits are expected to slow down the outbreak as they play a significant role in identifying the patients.

He said the performance of the new test is similar to that of the PCR, however it is more affordable for the people living in remote and underprivileged areas.

“The new kit costs only 30% of the PCR tests, and can help the country save a considerable amount of foreign currency,” he added.

The new test is expected to be released in the market soon, and be used in the Health Ministry’s nationwide screening programs.
