Iran’s Daily COVID-19 Fatalities Down to Lowest in 20 Days

Over 22,000 Iranians Die of COVID-19: Health Ministry

In her press briefing on Friday, Sima-Sadat Lari said the new deaths increase the overall death toll to 47,095.

Lari also reported 14,051 new cases of COVID-19 infection, raising the total number of cases to 922,397.

So far, she added, 640,065 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari said 5,860 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.
The spokeswoman noted that 5,995,445 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

She said the high-risk “red” zones include Tehran, Qom, Mazandaran, East Azarbaijan, Isfahan, Yazd, Ardabil, Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Hamadan, West Azarbaijan, Bushehr, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Alborz, Lorestan, Markazi, Ilam, South Khorasan, Kermanshah, North Khorasan, Semnan, Gilan, Zanjan, Qazvin, Kurdistan, and Kerman provinces.

The “orange” and “yellow” zones also include Golestan, Hormozgan, Fars, and Sistan-and-Baluchestan provinces, she added.

Iran, Russia to Work Together on Development of COVID-19 Vaccine

Sima-Sadat Lari said Iranian experts and authorities have held talks with the Russian side on the joint production of a COVID-19 vaccine, and will work with Russian vaccine producers.

“Relevant documents will be reviewed,” she told RIA Novosti.

“At the invitation of the Russian side, a meeting is to be held, and plans are to be drawn up in that regard,” said the spokeswoman.

She said a coronavirus vaccine trade-named Sputnik V was registered in Russia two months ago.

“The vaccine has been sent to different Russian cities and vaccination has got underway,” she said.
“The second coronavirus vaccine named EpiVacCorona was also registered around one month ago,” said the spokesperson.

She noted the mass-production of these two Russian vaccines has begun, and at the moment, both vaccines are passing through final stages of being tested on volunteers who reportedly number 40,000,” she said.

‘Iran Shouldn’t Return to JCPOA Commitments Even If US Rejoins Deal’

Mohammad Javad Larijani said Iran should not go back to its obligations.

“There is an important point. When we say we will return if they re-enter the deal, that would mean Iran has nothing to do but wait for them,” said Larijani, a former deputy foreign minister in the 1980s.

“They kept us waiting for six or seven years, and then we took just a few steps [and scaled down our commitments]. Now, should we return whenever they do so? Why are you saying this?” he said.

“There is no such thing. We are not an object of ridicule for them. We are not playthings in their hands. They did the wrong thing by withdrawing from the JCPOA and shouldn’t have done that,” he said.

“It is a bad stance for us to say we will return to our commitments if they rejoin the agreement,” said Larijani, a former head of the Judiciary’s Human Rights Office.

“We should express our position firmly … we should suspend all our obligations under the JCPOA,” said Larijani.

Iran Begins Legal Proceedings to Receive Financial Claims from Foreign Countries

Vice President for Legal Affair Laya Joneidi noted those proceedings should be looked into, and results should be announced accordingly.

“In some cases in two or three European countries, some judicial proceedings have been initiated,” she said.

“We should wait and see what the outcome will be after the proceedings have been reviewed,” she added.

The official added some of the assets owed to Iran are related to investment; hence, “investment agreements” will be used to guarantee the payment of those financial claims.
However, she noted, all these measures should be coupled with legal talks.

Iran Says Not Optimistic about Biden Administration

Iran Says New US Sanctions Show Trump’s Desperation

Vaezi said even the United States’ allies are happy over Trump’s defeat in the presidential election.

“Not only Iran, but also many other countries around the world, even US allies such as European countries, are pleased [to see Trump go], someone who was US President for four years and who neither was familiar with politics nor followed an appropriate framework and principles, and decided on impulse, and not only brought losses to his own country but also disrupted the world order and relations with other countries, including with regards to the Middle East and the extreme pressure he has put on the great Iranian nation over the past three or four years,” he told reporters.

“Naturally, we welcomed Trump’s leaving office and his defeat [in the presidential election],” Vaezi said.

He noted what matters to Iran is the course of action that the next US administration will take.

“As for whether or not we are optimistic about the next US administration, I should say that we are optimistic about no administration unless we see what action it takes,” he said
“So, the Iranian government is now not concerned about whether or not to be optimistic about the future US administration,” Vaezi underlined.

However, he said, based on what Biden’s campaign team said in the run-up to the election, there are indications that next US leaders could adopt policies different from those of the Trump administration.

“But they themselves announced in their election campaign that their language and tone and policies are different from those of Trump, and this is something that they themselves said,” he noted.
“However, no talks have been held and no contacts have been made so far; therefore, I believe the understanding that currently exists in Iran [of the next US administration’s stance] is based on remarks by individuals who will be part of the future US administration, and this understanding has influenced both the economic situation in Iran and the dollar exchange, gold coin and other markets in the country, and this influence will increase in the future,” Vaezi explained.

Iran Puts into Service 3 Petrochemical Projects Worth $1bn

Speaking at a ceremony where the projects were put into service, Petroleum Minister Bijan Namdar Zangeneh said the projects come with a price tag of more than $1 billion altogether.

By March 2020, the oil minister said, as many as 19 petrochemical projects worth $11.4 billion will have been put into service.

He added the country’s capacity of petrochemical production will reach 100 million tonnes annually in one year’s time, registering an 80-percent rise compared to eight years ago.

He said the petrochemical products to be produced are estimated to worth $25 billion, in total, per year.

However, the oil minister noted plans are underway to push up output capacity to 133 million tonnes per year in 2025, with products worth $37 billion.

Those Behind Economic War on Iran Left on Ash Heap of History: Rouhani

President Hassan Rouhani said Iran stood up to the US economic war and pressure over the past few years.

“With its 3-year resistance against the economic war launched by a bullying power, Iran’s economy showed that it is a great and resistant economy,” said the president.

“No country in the region has the power to resist an economic war for three years and emerge victorious, and this shows the grandeur, strength and resilience of the Iranian nation, which was brought about with people’s self-reliance … and due to Iran’s special geopolitical situation,” he said.

“No individual or power in the world can eliminate Iran, with its great geographical situation, [from playing a role] in the region or in the world,” said the president.
“Many intended to destroy Iran, but failed to, and now these were the last ones to claim they were able to do so, but failed to,” he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, President Rouhani said Iran, with its great potential and capabilities, can meet the needs of the region and even the world “at a lower cost and more easily in certain cases.”

He said Iran draws on domestic and international technology to boost local production.
He underlined the US sought to keep Iran from importing foreign know-how, but failed to.
President Rouhani also underscored that Iran favours “constructive interaction” with the world, but noted that constructive interaction will be useful only when coupled with national might.

The president reiterated the projects inaugurated in Iran on a weekly basis shows the country will not retreat in the face of enemy plots and will keep on the path to progress until achieving final victory.
