Iran Raps Any Move against Maritime Security after Jeddah Tanker Blast

Asked about the recent explosion and fire in an oil tanker in the Red Sea, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Wednesday, “The Islamic Republic of Iran rejects any provocation and destructive action harming maritime security and safety and the freedom of international trade.”

He also reaffirmed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s constant stance on maintaining regional stability and security, expressing hope that the countries in the region would step up efforts to strengthen cooperation to ensure maritime security, fight against pirates, and combat the trade of illicit materials in order to achieve sustainable regional security.

His comments came after an explosion struck a Singapore-flagged oil tanker off Saudi Arabia’s port city of Jeddah on the Red Sea on Monday morning.

Saudi authorities said the fuel transport ship was attacked by an explosive-laden boat. No casualties or injuries has been reported among the 22 sailors on board.

The blast comes after a number of security incidents concerning Saudi oil infrastructure.

On November 25, an explosion damaged a Greek-managed tanker while at berth in the Saudi port of Shuqaiq. Riyadh blamed Yemeni forces for the mine attack. The Houthis forces, who are fighting a Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen, did not comment on the incident.

Houthis, however, did claim a missile attack that had struck a Saudi Aramco oil company distribution station in Jeddah on November 23.

JCPOA Parties to Hold Informal Ministerial Meeting on December 21

Secretary-General of the European External Action Service Helga-Maria Schmid, the coordinator of the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has released a statement after the latest meeting of the commission on Wednesday.

What follows is the text of the statement issued by the chair of the December 16 meeting of the Joint Commission of the JCPOA:

“A meeting of the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) took place virtually on Wednesday, 16 December. Under the terms of the JCPOA, the Joint Commission is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the agreement. The Joint Commission was chaired, on behalf of EU High Representative Josep Borrell, by the EEAS Secretary General Helga-Maria Schmid and was attended by representatives of China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and Iran at the level of Political Directors/Deputy Foreign Ministers.

Participants discussed ongoing work to preserve the JCPOA and how to ensure the full and effective implementation of the agreement by all sides in light of existing challenges. Participants also agreed to hold an informal Ministerial meeting of JCPOA participants on 21 December in virtual format.”

Iranian, Portuguese Foreign Ministers Hold Phone Talks

In the phone call, they discussed issues relating to bilateral relations between Tehran and Lisbon, as well as the cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Europe during the period that Portugal assumes the rotating presidency of the European Union.

The Iranian and Portuguese foreign ministers also expressed their views about human rights and the fight against terrorism.

JCPOA Joint Commission Holds Online Meeting

Participants in the webinar discussed the latest developments surrounding the JCPOA.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi was leading the Iranian delegation in the online meeting.

Addressing the videoconference, Araqchi pointed to a series of media comments from Europe over the past days, stressing that the three European governments – the UK, France and Germany – which proclaim to be committed to democracy and its principles should not accordingly expect the Iranian government to disregard the principles of democracy and to refrain from implementing a law ratified by the Iranian Parliament.

“The administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed and obligated to carry out the measures ratified by the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Parliament) after legal procedures,” Araqchi underlined.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister also protested the recent stances adopted by the three European governments, adding, “The three European governments condemned the legal punishment against a convict instead of condemning the brutal assassination of a prominent Iranian nuclear scientist.”

“The European parties always call on Iran alone to exercise self-restraint in the face of all illegal and hostile activities, be it the US sanctions, act of sabotage in Natanz, or the assassination of its nuclear scientists,” he said.

“Iran cannot afford to pay the whole costs of implementation of the JCPOA and the unlawful behaviour of others, and the other parties must also pay a price for saving the JCPOA,” Araqchi noted.

On the speculations about the US’ return to the JCPOA, Araqchi said, “We consider actions rather than words and speculation. Iran has always expressed its stances clearly, and is ready to resume honouring its JCPOA commitments, which have been suspended in accordance with the Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, after the US’ return to its JCPOA commitments and restoration of the situation to what is was in January 2017.”

Iranian, Swedish Foreign Ministers Hold Phone Talks

In the phone call, the two sides conferred on the latest international developments, regional issues, JCPOA-related issues, and bilateral relations between Tehran and Stockholm.

Zarif and Linde also underlined cooperation and consultation on establishment of peace and security, and the necessity of delivering humanitarian aid to Yemen and Afghanistan.

The Iranian and Swedish foreign ministers also discussed consular relations, which may include the case of Iranian-Swedish citizen, Ahmadreza Djalali, who has been sentenced to death in Iran on charge of espionage.

There are speculations that Iran might be interested in exchanging Djalali with another Iranian national jailed in other countries, like diplomat Asadollah Assadi who has been detained by Belgium since 2018 on charges of being linked to a bomb attack plot in the French capital of Paris.

Soleimani’s Killing to Be Avenged Even after Trump, Iran’s Leader Suggests

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a meeting with family members of General Soleimani, who was assassinated in a US drone strike ordered by the outgoing President Donald Trump.

The Leader said the million-strong funeral services held in Iran and Iraq for General Soleimani surprised the Americans and were “the first harsh slap in the face for the United Sates.”

He said the expulsion of US forces from the region will be another slap in the face for Washington, which requires efforts by all regional nations and resistance groups.

The Leader underscored that Iran will definitely take vengeance upon those behind general Soleimani’s assassination.

“Revenge should be taken on those behind the assassination of general Soleimani, and this revenge will definitely take place at any time possible,” he noted.

US Enmity Toward Iran Not Limited to Trump Administration
The Leader further warned the Iranian administration that the enemies should not be trusted.

Ayatollah Khamenei underlined the US was hostile toward Iran even when Barack Obama was president.

“You saw what the United States, under Trump and Obama, did to you,” he said.
“Hostilities are not only limited to the US under Trump, so enmities will not end when he is gone,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Leader also touched upon the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, and hit out at the European signatories to the agreement for their “utmost breach of promises, meanness and hypocrisy.”

Removal of Sanctions Shouldn’t Be Delayed Even for One Hour
He further urged Iranian officials to neutralize sanctions instead of focusing on the removal of anti-Iran bans.

“It is up to the enemy to lift sanctions, but it up to us to neutralize them,” said Ayatollah Khamenei.

“I’m not saying that you should not pursue the lifting of sanctions,” he said, adding that if there is a chance to have them lifted in a wise and honourable way, that should not be delayed even for one hour.

The Leader also urged Iranian people and officials to maintain national unity.
He underlined the country should become powerful in different domains, namely economy, military defence, etc., adding the “enemy will have an eye on the country if you are not strong.”

Ratification of FATF Bills Prerequisite for Iran’s Access to Financial Resources: Spokesman

New US Sanctions Not to Affect Iran’s Activities: Spokesman

Speaking to reporters after a Wednesday meeting of the cabinet, Rabiei said the Expediency Council’s ratification of the FATF bills, proposed by the administration, will result in the improvement of international banking and financial relations and the removal of some obstacles.

Pointing to a recent letter that the administration has sent to Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to put forward legal proposals to address a series of concerns of the Expediency Council’s members, Rabiei said, “The Leader ordered that they (bills) not be expired, and that the (Expediency) Council can once again address the subject.”

Expressing optimism about the ratification of the bills, the spokesman added, “God willing, we will resolve the problems in cooperation with the (Expediency) Council. I believe we should all refer to people today.”

“We must consider the interests of people. We believe that the sanctions will fail. After the defeat of sanctions, our becoming blacklisted should not cause any problem to serving the people,” he noted.

The spokesman said the cabinet has once again discussed the FATF subject at the Wednesday session, adding, “Even if it is ratified by the (Expediency) Council, the situation has become again different from the past. Coming out of the blacklist requires a great deal of effort, while the administration will be doing that.”

“The regulations have become stricter. However, if they (bills) are ratified, we will push hard to remove those obstacles. We still believe that these bills are necessary to enable us to have access to our financial resources and avoid useless international challenges,” he concluded.

A few days ago, Ayatollah Khamenei approved the administration’s proposal for the extension of a process that authorizes the Expediency Council to review the remaining bills prepared by the government to take Iran out of the FATF blacklist.

Iran Opens Production Line for Coronavirus Drug ‘Remdesivir’

Remdesivir

Present at the ceremony was Iranian Health Minister Saeed Namaki, who said this drug is known in many countries as a medicine which is effective in treating COVID-19 patients.

“We believe even if this drug is slightly effective, we should develop the capacity in the country to produce it,” he said.

The minister said efforts being made in Iran will definitely result in the development of a vaccine for coronavirus.

He said the necessary arrangements have been made to issue permits for pharmaceutical companies for the production of Remdesivir.
