IRGC Blames Ukrainian Plane Disaster on US Adventurism

In a statement on the first anniversary of downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, the IRGC said the sorrow at the loss of the dear fellow Iranians in the crash is still painful and heartbreaking.

The statement also blamed the bitter incident on the “US’ anti-human adventurism and terrorist measures in the region”, saying the disaster once again revealed the depth of the global arrogance’s hostility towards the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation and saddened the hearts of the Iranian people.

The downing of the Ukrainian passenger plane occurred after the US adventurism and terrorist crime of assassinating Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, which was followed by Iran’s missile strike on the military base of Ain al-Assad and the consequent war conditions in the region, it added.

Highlighting the IRGC’s selfless devotion and courageous efforts over the past four decades to fight against the arrogant powers, protect Iran’s security and national interests, and safeguard the people’s health and calm, the statement expressed deep regret over the tragic incident, offered sympathy with the families of victims, and emphasized that reports from the expert committees have been reviewed to correct deficiencies and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The statement finally pointed the hardship caused by the enemy’s hostility and plots against Iran, saying the IRGC forces are determined to defeat the adversaries and take a “harsh revenge” on them.

The Kiev-bound UIA Boeing 737 crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran on January 8, 2020, killing all 176 people on board, mostly Iranian and Canadian citizens.

Iran said the plane was hit by an anti-aircraft missile due to human error, when the country’s air defense was on maximum alert at a time of heightened tensions following a retaliatory missile strike on a US base in Iraq after the American assassination of top Iranian commander General Soleimani.

Iran Condemns ‘Unfounded’ Accusations Raised in GCC Statement

No Change in Iran’s Borders as Karabakh Peace Deal Unfolds: Spokesman

In a statement on Wednesday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said the statement is the result of a lack of understanding of the situation in the region and beyond, the Saudi regime’s grudge and its political pressure on the GCC.

“At a time when, given the compromise between the Persian Gulf states, the regional countries are expected to rethink their viewpoints and approaches, which have had no other result than animosity and hostility over the past decades, and to adopt a new policy, some GCC members persist in remaining on the wrong path and resorting to the threadbare ‘Iranophobia’ scheme,” he said.

Khatibzaden noted the Saudi regime’s regional policy and its destructive approaches vis-à-vis Iran and other countries have destroyed a major part of the neighouring countries’ wealth and turned the region into a depot of weapons supplied by Western companies, which has paved the way for foreigners’ further interference in this sensitive region.

“By hijacking the GCC and its meetings and imposing its destructive viewpoints, the Saudi regime is promoting hate and violence in the region,” the spokesman added.

“Regrettably, some regional countries have become a gateway for the entrance of the destructive Israeli regime into the region although they are seeing Tel Aviv’s crimes in occupied territories and this regime’s desire to viciously infiltrate into Islamic countries,” he said.

“By continuing to pursue their injudicious policies, these countries have killed off the chances of cooperation proposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran in recent years in a bid to establish security and stability in the region,” Khatibzadeh said.

“The Saudi regime and countries whose irresponsible meddling in other countries has led to the killing of innocent citizens, especially in Yemen, and the spread of insecurity and terrorism in the region, are seeking to cover up their anti-human crimes by playing blame games and escape international punishments with impunity,” Khatibzadeh added.

He further rejected parts of the statement which objects to Iran’s scaling down its commitments under the JCPOA.

“They had put all their efforts and assets into scuttling the JCPOA, and now they are objecting to the legal measures that Iran has adopted in accordance with the JCPOA,” he said.

“Iran always remained committed to international law and its obligations. So, the country brooks no interference in its nuclear and missile programs as well as in issues related to its military and deterrent defence policies,” he said.

Khatibzadeh categorically condemned blatant support by some GCC member states for the US regime’s economic terrorism against Iranian people, and dismissed such backing as a breach of the good neighbourliness policy.

He said Iranians will, forever, remember the stance adopted by those countries.

The spokesman expressed hope that GCC members, instead of issuing threadbare statements which have no outcome other than the perpetuation of the current destructive trend, will pay attention to realities in the region and shift their approaches from the establishment of coalitions and alliances to one of dialogue and regional cooperation.

The foreign ministry spokesman, once again, underlined that the three islands of the Greater and Lesser Tunbs as well as Abu Musa are an integral and eternal part of Iran’s territory.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns any ownership claim on these islands and regards it as interference in its internal affairs and territory,” he added.

“All moves by the Islamic Republic of Iran on those islands are in line with the country’s inalienable rights, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the rehashing of such interventionist positions, in whatever form, is completely rejected and will not have any impact on the existing legal and historical facts.

“Based on its strategic viewpoint and fundamental policies, the Islamic Republic of Iran always believes interaction and cooperation are the solution to regional problems, and it welcomes initiatives aimed at boosting relations based on international principles and regulations,” Khatibzadeh said.

Range of Iranian Suicide Drones Upgraded to 4,000km: Army General

“Thanks to the efforts of the Iranian Army personnel, the non-stop flight range of the Army’s suicide drones has been upgraded to 2,000 kilometres, and with certain measures up to 4,000 kilometres,” said Army Deputy Commander for Operations Rear Admiral Mahmoud Mousavi, who is also a spokesman for the Army’s large-scale drone drills underway in Semnan.

He made the remarks on the second day of the massive drills, during which the country’s long-range missiles flew 1,400 kilometres from Makran coasts in southern Iran and successfully destroyed their targets in the war games area.

The Karrar-class drone successfully intercepted and destroyed mock hostile targets by firing an air-to-air Azarakhsh (Thunderbolt) missile, with a low radar cross-section at a high altitude.

During the maneuver, the Karrar UAV used a payload of machine gun ammunition to fire rounds at mock aerial targets. The drone also struck targets on the ground, including enemy fortifications, using 500-pound MK 82 bombs.

Also as part of Wednesday’s exercises, the Iranian Army’s Ababil-class drones successfully fired air-to-surface Almas missiles, which precisely hit their specific targets.

“At this stage of the exercise, a number of Army drones successfully carried out reconnaissance operations against fixed and mobile targets along land borders,” he added.

“Today, the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran is able to strongly respond to any enemy aggression and target positions within a range of 2,000 kilometres using a variety of long-range combat drones,” according to the commander.

Hundreds of drones belonging to the Army’s Ground, Navy and Air Defence Forces are practicing combat missions in the large-scale drills.

New Coronavirus Deaths in Iran Slip to Lowest Since Mid-June

In a press briefing on Wednesday, Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima-Sadat Lari reported 6,283 new cases of COVID-19 infection, raising the total number of cases to 1,261,903.

So far, Lari added, 1,040,521 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari said 4,780 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.

The spokeswoman noted that 7,939,633 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

According to Lari, the four cities of Sari, Amol, Ramsar, and Northern Savadkuh are currently in the “red” zone, 43 cities in the “orange” zone, and 401 cities in the “yellow” zone in terms of coronavirus outbreak.

Iran to Welcome Biden’s Return to Rule of Law: Rouhani

“We will welcome it if the other side obeys the law. A person who acts in a cruel way in the alley, breaks the windows with stone, but suddenly comes to his mind and says he doesn’t want to break windows anymore; shouldn’t we welcome it? We’d welcome such a move,” Rouhani said in a Wednesday address to a cabinet session.

“The moment this lunatic who breaks our window came and said ‘I’m sorry! I’ve now realized there’s no point in breaking your window. I keep breaking your glass, and every time you replace it with a new one. What I’m doing has no effect. I impose damage on you and bother you, but that doesn’t bring me anything. Now I’ve stopped doing it, and repented’; whenever they [Americans] do this, we’d welcome it.”

Rouhani said “if the incoming US administration of Mr Biden, which is to take office in two weeks, states that the US is going to stop breaking windows, repent, tread on the path of law, and comply with its commitments; if they ask us, our answer will be quite clear, straightforward, and simple: we’d tell them if you comply with all your commitments, we would fulfil all our commitments as well.”

However, he added, if the US fails to live up to its commitments, Iran wouldn’t bow to Americans.

“If you’d fulfil your commitments, it wouldn’t be a favour to us. That’s just reversing an unlawful behaviour you used to show. That means you’ve regretted doing it and realized you were making a mistake,” he made it clear.

Iran Ratifies Act on Tackling Online Fake News, Disinformation

In a Tuesday session of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace, chaired by President Hassan Rouhani, the document on requirements to prevent and act against dissemination of untrue information, news and content in the virtual space was ratified.

According to the document, the Judiciary should prepare the ground for prevention of cyber-related crimes within three months and take the necessary action against the falsified information, news and contents in the virtual space.

Moreover, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance is tasked with developing a verification and ranking system in cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and designing a plan to grant quality signs to the online platforms publishing information on a yearly basis.

The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance is also obliged to take advantage of the capacities of civil institutions, media, and awareness programmes to take the necessary measures for verification of information and news through a reference platform.

Iran Says War Unlikely, but Will Respond Firmly If US Triggers One

Ali Rabiei

Ali Rabiei noted Washington is unlikely to make any miscalculations about this.

“I think the US won’t have any miscalculations. We have told the US and everybody else clearly that we won’t start any war, directly or indirectly, but if the US makes a grave mistake, we will powerfully defend our security and vital interests,” he said.

“I believe the US is highly unlikely to come up with any miscalculations about Iran’s firm intentions as well as deterrence and revenge capability,” the spokesman added.

“So, we are unlikely to see new tensions aimed at triggering a fresh war in the region,” he said.

Rabiei underlined that the United States, even in the past, was aware of Iran’s capabilities and, hence, did not make the mistake of waging a war.

“The US used to have such intentions and would put such options on the table before, but Iran’s firm intentions and deterrence capability made them not come up with any miscalculations over these years,” he said.

The spokesman said the rumours of war are spread by those who cash in on the brouhaha by media over the issue.

“Such rumours have their roots in the pretentious behaviour of, and the psychological warfare launched against Iran and other peoples in the region by those who benefit from the media fuss over these rumours,” said Rabiei.

“This issue is nothing new. We have, for years, been witnessing this phenomenon with varying intensity,” he added.

The spokesman underscored that Iran will continue to keep a close watch on US movements in the region irrespective of rumours.

“I repeat that we keep closely monitoring all of the United States’ military movements in the region regardless of rumours of a war. And we don’t see these rumours as a source of concern for us given our deterrence capability,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, he said there is no denying that there are some people in the United States who favour “military adventurism.”

“There are some in the United States who are interested in military adventurism in order to deflect the American public’s attention from domestic issues in the country and election defeats. We cannot deny that and we have evidence in that regard,” he explained.

US Sentenced to Paying Damages to Iranians Harmed by Its Crimes

Iran to Prosecute 45 Americans over Their Role in Medical Sanctions

Gholamhossein Esmaili made the comment when questioned whether or not reports are true that a number of Iranians harmed by US crimes have filed suits against Washington following the United States’ crimes against Iranian people over the past years.

He was also asked what the outcome of the lawsuits has been.

“Under a law passed by the Iranian parliament, citizens who have suffered harm or losses because of the United States’ criminal acts can file suits at Iranian courts and the Tehran Justice Department, which will look into the lawsuits accordingly,” he said.

“Several cases have been filed in this regard so far and many rulings have been issued, too,” Esmaili added.

He said two cases have been reviewed in recent months.

One of them, said the spokesman, was related to a number of families of those killed in the terrorist incident in Chabahar.

“They had filed a lawsuit and demanded compensation. This case has been reviewed in the court,” he noted.

“Based on the verdict issued …, the US has been sentenced to paying $1 billion in damages to the families,” he underlined.

The other case is also related to over a dozen other Iranian citizens harmed by US criminal acts, said Esmaili, adding the court also reviewed the case and sentenced Washington to paying damages.

He underlined that criminality has been inherent in US statesmen in different eras.

Gholamhossein Eslmaili said the Americans have committed numerous crimes throughout history.

“American criminals committed many crimes during the course of history in different countries, especially in the Middle East region and Islamic countries, including Iran,” he said.

Iran Urges Seoul to Behave ‘Responsibly’ over Seizure of Korean Tanker

In comments on Tuesday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said, “The South Korean government’s behaviour in this regard is not understandable and is rejected.”

“We urge the Korean government to deal with this technical issue logically and responsibly,” Khatibzadeh noted.

“As announced before, the problem with the South Korean ship is a completely technical one,” he said.

“Like all countries, the Islamic Republic of Iran is very sensitive about protecting its marine environment and deals with any violations in accordance with the law,” Khatibzadeh explained.
“As the authority in charge of such issues, the [Iranian] Ports and Maritime Organization is professionally trying to offer the necessary assistance to the ship and its crew, and will inform the public about it accordingly,” he said.

He also weighed in on reports suggesting a South Korean delegation is travelling to Iran to follow up on the matter.

“A trip by South Korea’s acting foreign minister was already on the agenda, and it was made public accordingly, and this visit will take place in the near future, but it has nothing to do with the issue [of the seized ship],” he added.

“And the two countries have not reached any agreement on a separate visit between the two sides because this issue is running its defined legal course within a technical framework, and there is no need for a diplomatic visit,” he said.

Zarif Hails Qatar’s Resistance, Urges Concerted Action for Strong Region

“Congratulations to Qatar for the success of its brave resistance to pressure & extortion,” the top Iranian diplomat said in a post on his Twitter account on Tuesday.

“To our other Arab neighbours: Iran is neither an enemy nor threat. Enough scapegoating—especially with your reckless patron on his way out,” Zarif added, referring to the termination of Donald Trump’s tenure as the US president.

“Time to take our offer for a strong region,” Foreign Minister Zarif noted, concluding his message with the hashtag “HOPE”, a regional peace initiative proposed by Iran.

The tweet came after four Arab states that had imposed an embargo against Qatar for three years restored diplomatic relations with Qatar.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar in 2017, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

Doha denied the accusation and rejected the conditions for ending the partial blockade, including closing the Doha-based Al Jazeera broadcast network and curbing relations with Iran.
