Raisi Says Ready to Reopen Iran’s Embassy in Riyadh

In his first press conference after winning the country’s presidential elections, Ebrahim Raisi said he sees no obstacle to the reopening of the Iranian embassy in Riyadh, more than five years after its closure amid the severance of ties between the two countries.

He said his foreign policy is based on establishing relations with all countries in the world, especially Iran’s neighbours, which will be his administration’s priority.

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran on January 3, 2016, following demonstrations held in front of its embassy in Tehran as well as its consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad by angry protesters who were censuring the Al Saud house for executing top Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr a day earlier. The cleric was an outspoken critic of Riyadh’s policies.

Also present at the meeting was Iran’s chief negotiator Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, who touched upon the headway made during the current round of talks, especially with regards to the draft texts of the talks.

He said serious decisions need to be made in the capitals of the countries which are parties to the talks in order to resolve key outstanding issues.

He called on parties to the negotiations to adopt the necessary measures seriously, realistically and resolutely in order to protect and revive the JCPOA.

Araqchi also said the negotiating teams are closer to reaching an agreement than ever.

He expressed hope a deal can be clinched in the upcoming round of negotiations, but noted that it cannot be guaranteed.

The heads of other negotiating teams also confirmed the progress made in the talks, and highlighted the need for all sides to work, with a constructive approach, towards paving the way for reaching an agreement.

Agreement in Vienna Talks Near at Hand; Gaps Remain to Be Filled: Araqchi

“Today is the final day of the sixth round of the negotiations. We spent days working on a tight schedule and did a very tough job and, now, we are in a position that almost all documents related to the agreement are ready. A number of contentious issues have been resolved and a number of others remain,” said Araqchi.

“I believe it is now time for by our counterparts [in the talks] to make their mind. We are very close to an agreement but filling in the gap is not an easy task. Tonight we return to the capitals [for consultations].”

The deputy foreign minister had earlier lashed out at the administration of Joe Biden for maintaining anti-Iran sanctions, imposed by his predecessor Donald Trump.

The issue has been a key bone of contention in the Vienna talks for revival of the Iran nuclear deal.

Iran Summons British Envoy to Protest Harassment of Its Voters

In a statement on Saturday, Khatibzadeh said, “Following the disruption of the Iranian presidential election in some cities of Britain including London and Birmingham, which resulted in insults against the voters and the election staff and the beating of one of the voters by anti-democracy and counterrevolutionary terrorist elements, British Ambassador to Tehran Rob Macaire was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today by the Foreign Minister’s Assistant and Director General of the Foreign Ministry’s Western Europe Department.”

In this meeting, Khatibzadeh said, the British ambassador received Iran’s strong protest at these riotous and terrorist acts.

“The British ambassador was told that the government and police of that country have failed to fulfil their duties to ensure the security of the polling stations and the voters,” Khatibzadeh said.

The Director General of the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Western Europe has also reminded the British envoy that democracy materialises at the ballot boxes not in the moves of a few number of rioters on the streets.

“In the meeting, strong criticism was levelled at the naughty and divisive performance of the UK-based Persian media, including BBC Persian and Iran International, which tried to promote a boycott of election, encourage people to attend street protests, and disrupt the process of election with their programs and types of news making. It was emphasised that such measures that run counter to democracy and encourage riotous moves will remain in the memory of Iranian people,” the spokesman added.

The British envoy, in turn, said he will convey the protest to London.
