Japanese Firms Continue Purchasing Iranian Oil as Tokyo Says Crude Imports Untouched

The firm commenced loading 850,000 barrels of Iranian crude -200,000 barrels of Iranian Light and 650,000 barrels of Iranian Heavy – at Iran’s Kharg Island on Monday, sources told S&P Global Platts Monday.

The company joins other Japanese refiners who have continued importing oil from Iran, over two months after the US sanctions waiver was granted.

The cargo will arrive in Japan at the end of February, following its expected departure from Kharg Island on Tuesday, the source added.

A spokesman at parent Cosmo Energy Holdings declined to comment Monday.

Cosmo Oil’s commencement of Iranian crude oil loading comes after Japanese refiners Fuji Oil and Showa Shell – Japan’s main buyers of Iranian crude – fully loaded two ships with Iranian crude recently.

Japanese refiners resumed loading Iranian crude after major Japanese banks were set to resume Iranian oil transactions after receiving final regulatory clearance, paving the way for the country’s refiners to begin loadings as early as this month.

Also, Japanese refiners and shipping companies had recently resolved their concerns over relevant shipping insurance for Iranian imports, and were awaiting bank and regulatory approval before resuming inflows.

Japan did not import any crude from Iran in November. The country last recorded zero Iranian oil imports in July 2012 during the last international sanctions against Tehran.

Japan to Keep Up Buying Iran Oil

Meanwhile, the Japanese ambassador to Iran said the country’s oil imports from Iran will remain unchanged.

Speaking to Iran Daily this week, Mitsuo Saito said as a country with enormous oil and gas resources in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, Iran is a valuable source of energy to Japan which requires the country to meet its needs.

Tokyo attaches great importance to its relations with Tehran, and, thus, it held serious talks with the US to continue its oil imports from the Middle Eastern country, he noted.

Iran-UAE Ties “Unaccetpble” Due to Abu Dhabi’s Mistakes

“The UAE government, despite maintaining vast economic ties with Iran, has entered an unacceptable confrontational phase in its relations with the Islamic Republic due to the political and strategic mistakes of its leaders,” Zarif told a parliament session in Tehran Monday.

In November 2018, an Emirati official said his country was fully complying with the US sanctions imposed the same month on the Islamic Republic. Even before that, the UAE had taken a tougher line in accordance with Saudi Arabia’s hawkish policies on Iran.

Washington’s sanctions targeted Iran’s shipping sector as well as its banks and national airline, a decision that complicated Iranian oil tankers’ port calls in the UAE’s Fujairah port for fueling.

In response, Iran said it would start bunkering operations at a newly-built ship fueling terminal on the Persian Gulf island of Qeshm, which would reduce costs by as much as $5-7 per tonne.

Zarif said Iran was taking the necessary diplomatic measures to ensure Abu Dhabi would no longer violate the rights of Iranian traders working in the country.

At the same time, he said, Tehran was laying the required financial groundwork in other countries in the Persian Gulf region to replace the UAE and persuade its economic interests through those nations instead.

“That means countries that have better relations with Iran and maintain a more realistic view of regional developments,” Zarif stated.

Trade between the two sides has been dwindling, falling to $17 billion in 2017 from a peak of $20 billion in 2013.

Iran isolated US by sticking to nuclear deal

Zarif also defended Tehran’s decision to stay in the 2015 nuclear deal after US President Donald Trump’s decision last May to abandon the landmark agreement.

“We believe that, from the point of view of our national interests and considering all circumstances, the best choice has been made and this choice has put the US in a complicated situation which it desperately tries to get out of,” Zarif explained.

Following Trump’s decision to abandon the nuclear deal — known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — the European signatories refused to follow suit and reiterated their commitment to the agreement.

In response to Trump’s threats to target all trade ties with Iran, the three European signatories — the UK, France and Germany — began working on a joint payment channel that would protect EU companies trading with Tehran from the US sanctions.

The anti-Iran push by the US took heavier blows this month, after Russia and a host of European countries turned down Washington’s invitation to partake in an anti-Iran summit that would be held in the Polish capital of Warsaw next month.

Zarif mocked Trump’s efforts to save the faltering summit, saying he was literally “begging” for support after Iran’s response forced Washington to tone down the event’s anti-Iran agenda.

Erdogan: We Will Save Region With Iran, Russia Assistance

“We are determined to get our region out of the current catastrophe with cooperation of Iran, Russia, US and the Syrian people,” he said in an address to a gathering of the ruling AKP party, ISNA reported.

Ankara has been threatening for weeks to stage a new offensive in northern Syria to drive out the US-backed Kurdish forces, following two other operations in Syria in recent years.

The Turkish Army is about to stage the operation, shelling Kurdish forces’ positions in in the northern Syrian region of Tal Rifaat.

Iranian Researchers Design, Manufacture Anti-Cellulite Wears

A member of the Faculty of Textile Engineering at Isfahan University of Technology said he has been successful in producing anti-cellulose and anti-obesity shorts for the first time in Iran.

The use of cosmetic products containing fat burners, which are commonly provided in form of creams, gels, lotions, and oils for weight loss, is a method of fighting obesity and cellulitis, which need spending time and cost.

Iranian Researchers Design, Manufacture Anti-Cellulite WearsThe textiles produced for this purpose serve as the second skin of humans. Through prolonged contact with the body and continuous and gradual release of small amounts of active substances, it resolves the problem of obesity and cellulitis.

Foreign samples of this product will not be useful anymore after a period of use. While the product produced by this technological group, can be recharged and repeatedly used.

Iranian Researcher, Colleagues Develop World’s Smallest Canal

Ali Esfandiari, a faculty member of Sharif University of Technology, secured the achievement in cooperation with an international research team led by Andre Geim, the 2010 Physics Nobel Prize winner and a researcher at the University of Manchester in Britain.

Using graphene, the research team developed two-dimensional canals which can remove ions from fluids. The artificial canal can remove 100 percent of ions.

Esfandiari said the advantages associated with this project could be used in Iran as well.

“At the moment, extensive research is being conducted in the field of water and energy in Iran, and the results of this project can be a suitable guide for local researchers,” he noted.

He said the project is applicable to “biology” and “desalination” domains adding that the accomplishment could be used with regards to ion canals in nerves cells.
