Iraq rejects normalization with Israel

While at the World Expo in Dubai, Hussein spoke to i24NEWS about the possibility of Iraq joining the Abraham Accords.

“I don’t think so,” Hussein stated, adding, “There are many reasons… Iraq is not going to be part of this accord.”

The Abraham Accords normalized ties between Israel and several Middle East countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan.

“There are social reasons, the Palestinian issue… the political culture in Iraq, political parties in Iraq… This is a very sensitive issue in Iraq,” Hussein continued.

Hussein was also asked about the planned US withdrawal from Iraq, in light of the withdrawal from Afghanistan in August, which precipitated the takeover of the Taliban.

“I don’t know if the Americans are leaving the Middle East… but as for Iraq we agreed. The agreement is based on the fact that American combat forces are leaving the country at the end of the year,” he stated.

Hussein and i24NEWS also discussed the security situation in Iraq following the defeat of the Islamic State group in the country, as well as the recent assassination attempt on Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi.

“Iraq is keeping its promises. Iraq became one of the countries in the region which brings other countries together, and the tension in the Middle East is huge. There are many conflicts in the Middle East,” he noted.

“Iraq, instead of being part of the problem, became part of the solution,” he added.

Yemen vows to proceed with more anti-Saudi strkes

In remarks on Sunday, Yemen’s Information Minister Dhaifullah al-Shami hailed the successful implementation of the “Eighth Deterrence Balance Operation” through the bombing of a number of military and vital targets inside Saudi Arabia, using 14 domestically-developed combat drones, Yemen’s official Saba news agency reported.

He underlined that the strikes come within the framework of the legitimate right of response, guaranteed by the country’s national law and international principles, against the continuing Saudi-led aggression and siege on Yemen.

“Future deterrence operations will be more painful and crippling in case the [Saudi] aggression does not stop and the siege is not lifted. Yemeni people will not stand idly by in the face of crimes being committed by the coalition of aggression and the unjust blockade,” Shami pointed out.

The senior Yemeni official underscored that the recent Eighth Deterrence Balance Operation inflicted huge losses on Saudi Arabia, adding that officials in the kingdom restored to a media blackout in order to conceal the damage and hide their embarrassment, all while keeping their invincibility myth alive.

Shami highlighted that the operation conveyed an important message to members of the Saudi-led coalition and reminded them that the Yemeni armed forces are in possession of powerful weapons capable of deterring the aggressors.

In a statement carried by al-Masirah television network, spokesman of Yemen’s Armed Forces Brigadier General Yahya Saree announced that Yemeni armed forces had successfully carried a massive aerial operation against Saudi Arabia.

He said four Sammad-3 (Invincible-3) combat drones bombed the King Khalid Air Base near capital Riyadh, adding that four Sammad-2 drones also bombed military targets at King Abdullah International Airport and Saudi Aramco refineries in Jeddah.

Separately, military targets at Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern province of Asir were bombarded by Sammad-3 and five Qasef-2K (Striker-2K) drones bombed various military targets in Asir, Jizan, and Najran regions.

Saudi Arabia, backed by the US and other key Western powers, launched the war on Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing Mansour Hadi’s government back to power and crushing the popular Ansarullah resistance movement.

Having failed to reach its professed goals, the war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead and displaced millions more. It has also destroyed Yemen’s infrastructure and spread famine and infectious diseases there.

Despite heavily-armed Saudi Arabia’s continuous bombardment of the impoverished country, Yemeni armed forces and the Popular Committees have grown steadily in strength against the Saudi invaders and left Riyadh and its allies bogged down in the country.

Abbas: US to fulfill commitments under Biden

Palestinian Authority expects the United States to fulfill its obligations on peaceful resolution of the Middle East conflict, Abbas told Sputnik.

“The US administration [according to President Joe Biden] considers us partners in peace negotiations, believes in solving the conflict through the creation of two states, opposes settlement activities … We are waiting for the fulfillment of these US commitments,” Abbas said.

Abbas also added that Biden told him that his administration’s policy differs from the one pursued by his predecessor.

Abbas stated that he expects the US consulate in East Jerusalem to resume operations.

“The decision to reopen the US consulate in Jerusalem is part of the obligations of the US administration … We will not accept anything else, since East Jerusalem has been an occupied city since 1967, it is the eternal capital of the Palestinian state,” Abbas continued.

According to Abbas, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US consulate will provide services to the Palestinians work with the US State Department directly, and be independent of the US embassy to Israel.

Abbas expects to discuss ways to revive a political dialogue in Palestinian Authority with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their bilateral meeting in Moscow on Tuesday.

“During the visit, ways of reviving the political process will be discussed … We have previously stated our desire to hold an international peace conference under the auspices of the Middle East Quartet in accordance with international resolutions, and therefore we are confident in Russian support for our efforts in this direction,” Abbas added.

The Palestinian leader also intends to “consult” with Putin and inform him about the latest developments in the region.

Palestinian Authority will hold general elections when Israel gives permission to hold them in East Jerusalem, Abbas added.

“We will hold elections in Palestine [parliamentary and presidential] as soon as we receive permission to hold them in Jerusalem. Earlier, elections were held in Jerusalem, according to agreements signed between the two sides,” Abbas continued.

To send a warning to the Azeri side, Iran held war games near the border of the two countries. Later tensions subsided following active diplomacy on the part of both sides.

Israeli troops kill Palestinian in Jerusalem

Israel Palestine

WAFA news agency reported Israeli military forces on Sunday fatally shot the 42-year-old man near the Chain Gate, one of the entrances to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Israeli police immediately closed the site to visitors following the incident.

Israeli media outlets claimed that the Palestinian man opened fire, and was shot dead by troops at the scene.

He was later identified as Fadi Abu Shkhaydam, a resident of the Shuafat refugee camp in East al-Quds and one of the leaders of Hamas resistance movement in the camp.

The Israeli Magen David Adom ambulance service reported four people were wounded in the purported shooting attack. It alleged that two of the casualties were civilian men, while the two others were Israeli police officers.

One man was taken in critical condition to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus in al-Quds with head wounds and was later pronounced dead. The second man reportedly sustained moderate-to-severe wounds.

Two police officers, aged 30 and 31, were lightly wounded, according to the Israel police. They were taken to Hadassah Ein Kerem for treatment.

“The message of this heroic operation is a warning to the criminal enemy and its regime to stop attacks on our land and our holy sites. Israel will pay a price for the iniquities it commits against al-Aqsa Mosque, Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah and elsewhere,” Hamas announced in a statement.

Hamas spokesperson Hazim Qasim also praised the incident, calling it in line with the “legitimate struggle” of the Palestinian people.

“The holy city [of al-Quds] will continue to fight until it expels the foreign occupier, and it will not succumb to the hateful reality of the occupation,” he noted.

Abdul-Latif Qanu, another Hamas spokesman, said the operation was part of a natural response to the growing Israeli crimes in occupied al-Quds.

He added that the incident underlines the continuation of the Palestinian nation’s struggle against the occupying regime, and Israeli officials’ inability to snuff out the campaign.

Qanu stated the Palestinian resistance against Israel will continue unabated until the desired goal of the regime’s annihilation is achieved.

Israeli troops have on numerous occasions been caught on camera brutally killing Palestinians, with the videos going viral online and sparking international condemnation.

The Tel Aviv regime has been criticized for its extensive use of lethal force against and extrajudicial killing of Palestinians who do not pose an immediate threat to the occupation forces or to the Israeli settlers.

Johnson says Britain must engage with Taliban

Britain must engage with the Taliban government to deal with the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, Johnson stated.

The PM made the remarks while answering a query from Labor Party parliamentarian Sarah Champion.

“Afghanistan looks like hell on earth”, the lawmaker remarked, asking the prime minister how and when the Afghans would receive the UK-promised aid.

In response, the prime minister noted the UK had no choice but to engage with the current Taliban government to help resolve the crisis in Afghanistan.

“There is no point in the UK just standing on the sidelines and failing to engage with the Taliban,” Johnson continued, adding, “They may not speak for all Afghans, but they are some kind of authority – even if a very imperfect authority.”

Ukrainian passenger plane shootdown trial begins in Iran

The defendants are accused of downing Flight PS752, killing all 176 passengers and crew on board. Over 103 relatives of the victims and their lawyers attended the court hearing in Tehran on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the judge in charge of the case said all those who lost their loved ones may attend the proceedings. He also vowed that the trial will be fair and anybody responsible for the incident will be punished.

Iranian military officials say the defendants shot down the aircraft unintentionally as they took it for an enemy projectile or plane.

The incident happened as Iranian air defense systems anticipated an enemy attack because shortly before that, Iran had battered a US base in Iraq in retaliation for the assassination of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
