Kurds say arrested ‘dangerous Daesh leader’ in Syria

“On this blessed day, our forces announce the arresting of one of the most dangerous Daesh’s emirs who had participated in the 2014 attack against Kobane & committed many massacres against our people in NE Syria,” Shami wrote on Twitter.

“His confessions will be published soon,” he added.

Despite declarations of the Islamic State group’s defeat in Syria in March 2019, militant sleeper cells continue to carry out attacks in their former territory.

Iran, P4+1 talks to resume Monday

According to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), The talks aimed at removing the anti-Iran sanctions will be held at the level of deputy foreign ministers.

The EU’s Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora says the 7th round of talks had three goals: 1-To involve the new Iranian negotiating team in comprehensive talks 2-To hold negotiations over the new Iranian government’s proposals 3-To see if any of the negotiating teams agrees to insert the proposals into the final text of a potential deal.

Meanwhile, Ali Bagheri Kani Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister and chief nuclear negotiator says Tehran put forth its approach to the draft text of the previous 6 rounds of talks.

He referred to the two drafts the Iranian team put forth during the 7th round of negotiations with one being about sanctions removal and the other about Iran’s nuclear activities.

Bagheri added that the drafts will be the basis of the new discussions.

Saudi Arabia building own missiles with Chinese help

According to CNN, Satellite images obtained by the news channel show the Saudis are currently manufacturing the projectiles by themselves while they are known to have bought them from China in the past. Western observers say Saudi Arabia’s missile program will further complicate the situation in the Middle East as the West will find it more difficult to convince Iran to stop producing missiles given Riyadh’s program to make its own weapons.

Jeffrey Lewis, a weapons expert and professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, says, “While significant attention has been focused on Iran’s large ballistic missile program, Saudi Arabia’s development and now production of ballistic missiles has not received the same level of scrutiny”.

Lewis also says the production of ballistic missiles by the Saudis suggests that any diplomatic effort to control missile proliferation need to involve other regional players, like Saudi Arabia and the Israeli regime, that produce their own ballistic missiles.

China has defended its cooperation with Saudi Arabia in manufacturing missiles in the kingdom. A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told CNN Beijing and Riyadh are strategic partners and have maintained friendly cooperation in all fields, including military trade. The Chinese diplomat added that such cooperation does not violate international law nor does it involve the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Covid-19 fatalities in Iran remain near record lows

Health Ministry figures released on Saturday showed 42 new fatalities, taking the total number of people in Iran who have lost their lives to the respiratory disease to 131,348.
The ministry also reported 1,121 new infection cases over the past 24 hours.
Iran has been reporting lower fatalities and infection cases over the past weeks as it keeps up its national vaccination campaign.
The health ministry has administered over 116 million vaccine doses so far with nearly 52 million people fully vaccinated.
Over 5,478,000 Iranian have received their third dose as health officials call on people to get their booster shot as soon as possible.

Five killed as Saudi coalition and Yemen forces exchange fire

Saudi’s civil defense said that two people, one Saudi and the other Yemeni, were killed and seven others wounded in a projectile attack on Jazan, a southern region of Saudi Arabia bordering Yemen.

“A military projectile fell on a commercial store on the main street, resulting in two deaths,” it announced in a statement.

Seven others were wounded, six Saudis and a Bangladeshi national, it added.

In Yemen, medics stated three people were killed and six others were injured in Saudi-led coalition air raids in Ajama, a town northwest of capital Sanaa.

“Three civilians including a child and a woman were killed, and six others were wounded,” medics told AFP.

Yemen’s Huthis regularly launch missiles and drones into neighbouring Saudi Arabia targeting its airports and oil infrastructure. But the latest incident marks the first time in months that Huthi attacks on Saudi have resulted in fatalities.

Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a war against the Arab world’s most impoverished nation in March 2015. The war has been seeking to restore power in Yemen to Riyadh’s favorite officials.

The death toll of the war, now in its seventh year, will reach an estimated 377,000 by the end of 2021, according to a recent report from the UN’s Development Programme.

The fighting has seen some 80 percent of the population, or 24 million people, relying on aid and assistance, including 14.3 million who are in acute need.

Road maintenance workers in Ardebil Province have been working to clear all roads blocked by snowfall.

“So far, more than 216 rural roads have been reopened and communications roads to 320 villages remain closed as road maintenance workers are trying their utmost to reopen the pathways,” announced the provincial Road Maintenance and Transportation Department on Saturday.

“By the end of today, or by tomorrow at the latest, all rural roads will be reopened, and all main and minor roads are now open for transportation” the department added.

Temperatures dropped by 5 to 10 degrees centigrade across Iran over the past two days as many provinces experienced snowy weather at the outset of winter.

Aoun says Lebanon needs 6-7 years to exit crisis

Lebanon’s economy has been in freefall since 2019, when a mountain of debt and political gridlock drove the nation into its deepest crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.

“We need six to seven years to get out of this crisis,” Aoun stated in a televised interview.

More than 80 percent of the population lives in poverty and the currency has lost more than 90 percent of its black market value amid political squabbling that has delayed an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh has noted the country’s mandatory dollar reserves have been slashed by more than half, threatening a subsidy programme that had covered fuel, medicine and flour.

“Our quota in the International Monetary Fund is 4 billion,” Salameh continued, adding, “If countries add to it, we could reach 12 to 15 billion, an amount that could help start Lebanon’s recovery and restore confidence.”

Lebanon defaulted on its debt for the first time last year but political leaders have continued to resist key reforms demanded by donors to unlock necessary funds.

Pile-up in south Iran leaves 10 dead, several wounded

The pile-up involving five vehicles, including a truck and a minibus, occurred early morning on Saturday on the road linking the cities of Ahvaz and Khorramshahr in Khuzestan Province.
The cause of the accident is said to have been the truck sideswiping the minibus.
“The accident happened when a truck carrying cattle hit a minibus transporting workers before another three vehicles collided with the two,” said police.
