Chinese negotiator: Deal possible before February

Wang Kwan added that the fresh round of talks will focus on terminating the anti-Iran sanctions and that there is a joint draft document regarding sanctions removal.

The report came an hour after Iran’s chief negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani and his French counterpart met.

The meeting comes as France did not play a constructive role in the previous rounds of negotiations and got criticized by the Iranian side.

Before Bagheri’s talks with the French negotiator, the senior Iranian diplomat attended a three-way meeting with his Chinese and Russian counterpart prior to the session of the nuclear deal’s joint commission.

Military expert: Israel not capable of intercepting all Iran missiles

“Iran’s threats aren’t unsubstantiated,” Russian military expert Yury Lyamin told the Kommersant.

According to him, Iran fired a total of 16 missiles during the drills.

“Out of these missiles, four types are capable of reaching Israel’s territory from Iran,” the analyst stressed, adding that the use of missiles unable to reach Israel from Iran “is probably a hint that in the event of a war, Israel will be attacked not only from Iran.”

Lyamin said Israel’s missile defenses potentially could intercept some of these missiles but not all of them, particularly when it came to the most advanced and precise ones.

Iran’s missile drills that ended on Friday simulated an attack on the Zionist regime’s nuclear facilities known as Dimona.

The war games conducted this week by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps in the Persian Gulf were intended to send a warning to Israel, the country’s top military commanders stated on Friday, amid concerns over possible Israeli plans to target Iranian nuclear sites.

IRGC Commander in Chief Major General Hossein Salami said after the exercises that Iran will cut off the hands of enemies if they make a wrong move and that the distance between actual operations and military exercises is only a change in the angle of launching the missiles.

Iran’s ballistic missiles have a range of 2,000 km and the entire occupied Palestine and US bases in the region are within their reach.

Baku says tensions with Tehran removed

The foreign minister noted that development of relations between countries has been discussed at the meetings with his Iranian counterpart.

“It is not a secret that there has been tension, certain disagreements between two countries a while ago, but it has been removed within a short period of time. A sincere meeting has been held between Iranian and Azerbaijani heads of state in Ashgabat, a wide range of issues have been discussed,” he added.

In a meeting with Azerbaijan Republic’s President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, Amir Abdollahian welcomed the expansion of bilateral ties with the Azerbaijan Republic and what he called “unique commonalities” between the two countries.

“A new chapter has opened in the relations between the two countries and this will have a positive impact for both nations. We are ready to finalize all previous projects and to lay the basis for new agreements between the two countries,” the Iran’s foreign minister stated in the meeting with Aliyev in Baku.

Aliyev also agreed that regional issues should be resolved among regional countries and expressed Baku’s opposition to any interference by extra-regional countries.

The Azerbaijani president also described his recent meeting with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi on the sidelines of the summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization in Ashgabat as “fruitful”.

Iran’s chief negotiator meets EU’s deputy foreign policy chief

Earlier, he met with his Chinese and Russian counterpart in the Austrian capital.

Russian negotiator Mikhail Olyanov said in a tweet this morning the delegations of Russia, China and Iran met to compare notes before the official start of the 8th round of the Vienna talks later on Monday.

According to the announced schedule, the opening meeting of the JCPOA’s joint commission will be held at 6 pm local time (20:30 Tehran time). As usual, following the meeting, Enrique Mora will brief reporters on the outcome of the talks and the prospects ahead.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Iran and the P4+1 group have found common grounds in light of the two drafts put forth by Tehran regarding sanctions removal and the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities.

He noted that talks must reach a point where Iran can easily sell oil, revenues from oil sales will be paid into Iran’s accounts, and the country will enjoy all benefits from the nuclear deal.

Envoy: Iran’s 2021 exports to Russia to reach record $1bn

“Russia imported $775 million worth of goods from Iran in the first 10 months of 2021, which is a new record in recent years,” Kazem Jalali said on Monday.

He said Russia’s import of Iranian goods increased by 122% in the first 10 months of this year.

When the quarterly figures for the end of 2021 are out, it is likely that Russia’s total imports from Iran this year will reach a record $1 billion for the first time. The main items imported by Russia from Iran are agricultural products and summer crops, the Iranian ambassador added.

“The Russians have imported an unprecedented volume of Iranian agricultural products over the past year, and for only a few consignments of bell peppers, there have been problems with pesticide standards. Otherwise, in other cases, we see the growth of exports of Iranian agricultural products to Russia, and this trend continues,” Jalai explained.

Lebanon to hold parliamentary vote in mid-May

“I have signed a decree concerning the House of Representatives elections with following dates: elections of the territory of Lebanon will be held on May 15, 2022. Employees engaged in the elections process can cast their votes on May 12, 2022”, Mawlawi posted on Twitter.

Mawlawi added that Lebanese nationals living abroad can cast their votes on Friday, 6 May 2022, or on Sunday, 8 May 2022, depending on which of these two days are weekdays in specific country of residence.

Lebanon’s parliament had in October voted to hold early elections on March 27, but President Michel Aoun stated he would not accept the early date.

The elections are expected to be hotly contested amid widespread anger in Lebanon over an economic meltdown that has seen the currency lose more than 90% of its value since 2019 and worsened poverty significantly.

Ownership of Iran football giants transferred to two ministries

Esteghlal was given to the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Commerce and Perspolis to the Ministry of Economy. Before the decision, both clubs were owned by the Ministry of Sports and Youths.

Currently, the members of the Commission of Esteghlal and Perspolis include the ministers of sports and youths, justice and economy. Three other ministers are supposed to be added to the commission.

The Asian Football Confederation, AFC, has removed both clubs from the current season of the Champions League.

The AFC did so on the grounds that Esteghlal and Perspolis have failed to meet a set of criteria to obtain the club licensing required for participation in the Champions League competitions.

The license is given after a club meets criteria in five sections – sporting, infrastructure and personnel as well as with regard to administration, legality and finance.

Russia: US realizes pressure on Syria not working

Syria

According to Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev, with Joe Biden in office, the US stance on Syria underwent some changes and became clearer.

“If previously, the policy of maximum pressure on Syria was the order of the day, hoping that it would whip up discontent among the civilian population, along with a wave of protests and regime change, by now they’ve realized that this is not working, this shouldn’t be counted on and it is necessary to work on the enhancement of humanitarian assistance. They also admit that the stabilization of Syria’s situation, as they say, is possible through providing humanitarian assistance,” the envoy added.

In particular, the diplomat noted the preparation of international projects that should provide Syria with additional income.

“So far, there are no specifics, for now, it is still on paper but the Americans have already approved the implementation of gas delivery projects from Egypt via Syria to Lebanon and electric power from Jordan through Syria to Lebanon. If this is a transit [arrangement], then Syria as the transit country should receive a certain income,” he explained.

It is a great advantage of Moscow, Tehran, and Ankara in promoting the Syrian settlement within the framework of the Astana format that they are present “on the ground” and enjoy real influence on the political process, Lavrentiev stated.

“It is our advantage that Russia, Turkey, and Iran are present on the ground. We enjoy certain influence on the situation that is taking shape on the ground and on advancing the political process,” he said.

In the meantime, the members of the Small Group of the Constitutional Committee tend to “get together, have a chat, make charges, call for accusing the Syrian authorities of all conceivable and unconceivable crimes further on and go”, Lavrentiev continued, adding, “They are not expected to produce any tangible influence on the situation.”

The Russian envoy stressed that over the years the Astana process has been underway Russia had developed a “very business-like and strong relationship” with the Iranian and Turkish counterparts, which allow for discussing “frankly and in a climate of trust any issues, however, delicate and sensitive.”

“Constructive cooperation with Iran and Turkey goes on,” he noted.

The agenda of the Astana format summit (Russia, Iran and Turkey) will be aimed at achieving more tangible progress in efforts to resolve the crisis in Syria, the Russian special presidential envoy for Syria said.

“The agenda is the following: if a summit takes place, the parties consider the situation in efforts to resolve the Syria issue and interaction between the three guarantor countries in this direction. This is the main agenda that will be there. Our presidents will discuss what needs to be done to ensure more tangible progress with regard to the Syrian settlement. Accordingly, they will later instruct their envoys to continue this work,” Lavrentyev stated.

Lavrentyev confirmed that the summit might take place in the Iranian capital of Tehran in early 2022.

“It will be held early next year, that’s for sure, though the process has slowed down due to coronavirus restrictions. The decision to hold the next summit in Tehran was confirmed a year and a half ago. However, we cannot announce a specific month and day,” the envoy added.

At the same time, in his words, the summit will have to be held in person.

“An online summit took place in July last year. A year and a half have passed since then so we believe that it is necessary to hold an in-person meeting. Our president [Vladimir Putin] has talked about it with Iranian President [Ebrahim] Raisi and Mr. [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan,” Lavrentyev noted.

According to him, the summit is likely to be preceded by an in-person meeting of the foreign ministers of the guarantor countries.

“When it comes to such meetings, they should be held in person. The reason is that the issues on the agenda are quite sensitive and it’s not reasonable to discuss them via video conference,” he stressed.

“The meeting will probably take place in Tehran or in Turkey. However, the summit itself will be held in Tehran because it is now Iran’s turn to host the event,” Lavrentyev emphasized.

When asked when the next international Astana meeting on Syria would take place, the Russian presidential envoy said that it depended on when the Russia-Iran-Turkey summit was held.

“If we manage to arrange it this spring, for instance, then our Astana format meeting will follow right away. This is how we view the situation. The presidents need to meet, talk, and outline avenues for future cooperation and order the relevant agencies to deal with the matter via the Astana platform. We will gather later to discuss specific mechanisms to implement the instructions that we will receive from our presidents,” the diplomat concluded.

Senior Assistant to Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji told TASS on the sidelines of an international meeting on Syria earlier that Iran, Russia, and Turkey had agreed to hold a summit in Tehran in February or March 2022 depending on the coronavirus situation. The Iranian diplomatic official also noted that the summit would be preceded by a meeting between the three countries’ top diplomats, slated for January or early February 2022.

Source: Saudi claims over Hezbollah role in Yemen war lie

The source revealed to Al Mayadeen that the remarks by spokesperson for the Saudi coalition forces is a “lie”.

The source pointed out that the spokesperson, Turki Al-Malki, showed reporters a fabricated clip showing “Hezbollah’s involvement in Yemen and the use of Sanaa airport to target Saudi Arabia.”

Although none of the people in the video were Lebanese, Al-Malki alleged that “Hezbollah is training the Huthis to booby-trap and use drones.”

The video also attempted to depict “the headquarters of Iranian and Hezbollah experts at the airport.”

Al-Malki had shown clips, none of which could be independently verified, of alleged “Hezbollah members” placing explosives in a drone, with another man who identified himself as a Hezbollah member telling Ansarallah members that “we must strengthen our ranks.”

The senior Yemeni source asserted that the personnel in the video published by the Saudi coalition “is not Lebanese and does not include any Lebanese images”, adding that “what was published conjures mockery and does not deserve a response, and confirms the bankruptcy of these people and a lost cause.”

He continues, “The fabricated tape confirms that the Yemeni people are marching towards a conclusive victory”, stressing that the films “are poorly prepared and directed, and are evidence of their defeat.”

Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a war against the Arab world’s most impoverished nation in March 2015. The war has been seeking to restore power in Yemen to Riyadh’s favorite officials.

The death toll of the war, now in its seventh year, will reach an estimated 377,000 by the end of 2021, according to a recent report from the UN’s Development Programme.

The fighting has seen some 80 percent of the population, or 24 million people, relying on aid and assistance, including 14.3 million who are in acute need.

Iran MP: Fuel smuggled out in great volumes due to subsidies

Mojtaba Malhouzi says diesel is a case in point. He says the price of the product on the Persian Gulf FOB is 60 times greater than its price inside the country.

The lawmaker added that the extent of the fuel smuggled out of the country shows it cannot be the work of small smugglers. He blamed the situation on mafia groups.

He said all officials and state organizations are responsible to end the fuel trafficking.
