Turkish lira sinks to all-time low

Lira

The lira is trading above 26 against the US dollar, and is now down 28% against the greenback so far this year.

The Turkish currency has weakened due to the latest decision by the country’s central bank to ease the regulatory requirements in the banking industry, which were aimed at supporting the national currency. Last week, the regulator raised rates by 650 basis points to 15%.

It also refused to inject more foreign-exchange reserves to buoy the domestic currency and manage the exchange rate. Last week, Bloomberg reported that Turkey has spent some $200 billion to support the lira in the last 18 months, depleting reserves as it kept interest rates artificially low.

The central bank’s net international reserves dropped to a 21-year low of $2.33 billion in the week to May 12, as forex demand surged ahead of elections.

The latest steps were meant to free up markets and to ensure stability, the bank stated over the weekend, while a senior official said it had adjusted its foreign exchange policy, Reuters reported.

“The central bank is not intervening in any way on the exchange rate level by selling foreign currency after its interest rate decision last week,” the official said. “The numbers are determined entirely by the free market. Hence, there is no use of foreign exchange reserves and a period of increasing reserves has started.”

Trump heard discussing sensitive Iran document in audio recording: Report

Trump

In the nearly two-minute recording, Trump admitted he did not declassify it before his departure from office.

The conversation occurred at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey with two staffers, a publisher and a writer of his upcoming book, the reports said.

Trump was purportedly talking about holding a secret Pentagon document with plans to attack Iran, citing Mark Milley, the then chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Well, with Milley – let me see that. I’ll show you an example,” Trump is heard saying, according to the media reports.

“He said that I wanted to attack Iran – isn’t it amazing? I have a big pile of papers. This thing just came up, look. This was him. They presented me this,” he says, reshuffling the papers.

“It is like highly confidential, secret. This is secret information. Look, look at this. You attack and …” said Trump, according to the transcript.

“See, as president, I could have declassified, but now I can’t, you know. But this is classic,” Trump was heard saying. “Isn’t that interesting? It’s so cool.”

At one point in the recording, Trump is heard saying, “You probably didn’t believe me, but now you believe me. It’s incredible.”

In the indictment of Trump and his aide, Walt Nauta, special counsel Jack Smith referenced the recording of a meeting as evidence.

Trump pleaded not guilty to 37 counts brought by federal prosecutors on June 14 in connection with his alleged retention of classified government records after he left office.

On June 19, he stated no classified documents were present at the time the recording was made.

Following the release of the recording, Trump took to his social media platform to blast Smith.

“The Deranged Special Prosecutor, Jack Smith, working in conjunction with the DOJ & FBI, illegally leaked and ‘spun’ a tape and transcript of me which is actually an exoneration, rather than what they would have you believe,” he added.

“This continuing Witch Hunt is another ELECTION INTERFERENCE Scam. They are cheaters and thugs!” he wrote.

China’s FM touts Beijing and Moscow as a force for “global peace”

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang

Speaking at a conference in Beijing held by the Russian International Affairs Council and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Qin reiterated Beijing’s support for Moscow, saying it plans to work with Russia to oppose the “use of force and hegemony of individual states”.

Qin’s remarks come after senior Chinese officials expressed support for Moscow during a meeting with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko in Beijing on Sunday following the Wagner rebellion, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement.

On Sunday, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson referred to the uprising as Russia’s “internal affair” and added: “As Russia’s friendly neighbor and comprehensive strategic partner of coordination for the new era, China supports Russia in maintaining national stability and achieving development and prosperity.”

China and Russia declared a friendship with “no limits” in February 2022, shortly before Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his war on Ukraine. Since then, Beijing has refused to condemn the invasion and instead provided much-needed diplomatic and economic support for Russia while attempting to portray itself as a peacemaker in the conflict — a position that has further soured its relations with Western nations.

Iran Leader says Hajj rituals can thwart plots of arrogant powers, Zionists against humanity

Hajj

In a Tuesday message to the 2023 Hajj pilgrimage, the Leader said the rituals can render ineffective all the plans of the arrogant powers and Zionism aimed at the moral downfall of humanity at the current time and future.

Ayatollah Khamenei added that the arrogant powers and Zionism are targeting unity and spirituality with their acts of enmity and sabotage at this juncture in time and more than in the past.

The Leader emphasized that the US and other arrogant centers are strongly opposed to unity among Muslims, understanding among Muslim nations and countries, and commitment to the religion of the younger generation in these nations.

The following is the full text of Ayatollah Khamenei’s 2023 Hajj message:

In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds and peace and blessings be upon the Great Messenger of God, Muhammad al-Mustafa and upon his Pure Progeny and upon his chosen Companions.

The Abrahamic call to Hajj and his universal invitation have once again addressed the entire world from the heart of history, making eager and excited the hearts that are ready and which remember.

The invitation is addressed to all human beings: “And proclaim the Hajj to all the people” (Holy Quran 22:27). The Kaaba is the blessed host and a guide for all people: “Indeed, the first house to be set up for humankind is the one at Bakkah [Kaaba], blessed and guidance for all nations” (Holy Quran 3:96).

The Kaaba, as the focal point and the main focus of attention of all Muslims, and also the Hajj ritual as a small example of the extensive diversity of the Islamic world, can serve to elevate human society and improve the health and security of all people. Hajj can bless all humanity with spiritual and moral elevation, and this is the vital need of humankind today.

Hajj can annul and render ineffectual all the plans of the Arrogant Powers and Zionism for the moral downfall of humanity – today and in the future.

That which is a necessary condition for the occurrence of this universal impact is that as a first measure Muslims themselves should properly hear the life-giving message of Hajj and do their utmost to implement it.

The two main foundations of this message are “unity” and “spirituality.” Unity and spirituality are what guarantee the material and spiritual advancement of the Islamic world and its enlightening the entire world. Unity means being connected both intellectually and in practice. It means that hearts, thoughts, and orientations come closer together. It means a synergy in science and experience. It means having an economic connection between Islamic countries. It means the existence of trust and cooperation between Muslim governments. It means working together against common, definite enemies. Unity means that the plots designed by the enemy cannot set Islamic denominations, nations, races, languages, and the diverse cultures of the Islamic world against each other.

Unity means that Muslim nations should know each other, not through the enemy’s seditious descriptions, but through communication, dialogue, and interaction. They should be aware of each other’s potential and capacities and make plans to benefit from them.

Unity means that the scientists and universities of the Islamic world work hand in hand together, the scholars of Islamic schools view each other in good faith and with tolerance and fairness, and they listen to each other’s words. The intellectual elites in all countries and of all denominations acquaint the people with each other’s commonalities, and encourage coexistence and brotherhood.

Unity also means that political and cultural leaders in Islamic countries should prepare themselves in a coordinated manner for the situation that will exist in the upcoming world order. They need to determine with their own hands and by their own will the proper place for the Islamic Ummah in the new global experience, which is filled with opportunities and threats. They should not allow the bitter experience of the political and territorial engineering of West Asia at the hands of Western governments after WWI to be repeated.

Spirituality means advancing religious ethics. The enchantment of “ethics minus religion,” which has long been promoted by Western intellectual sources, has resulted in this unrestrained collapse of ethics in the West that everyone in the world is witnessing. Spirituality and ethics should be learned from the Hajj rituals, from the simplicity that exists in Ihram, from the negation of illusory privileges, from “feeding the destitute and the needy,” from “there is to be no sexual contact, vicious talk, or disputing,” from the circumambulation of the entire Ummah around the axis of monotheism, from the Stoning of the Devil [shaytān], and from the Disavowal of the Polytheists [mushrikīn].

My brothers and sisters who are performing the Hajj! Take advantage of the opportunity that Hajj provides to contemplate and ponder on the secrets and mysteries of this unparalleled obligatory action and make it a provision for the rest of your life. At this juncture in time and more than in the past, unity and spirituality are subject to the enmity and sabotage of the Arrogant Powers and Zionism. The US and other centers of Arrogance are strongly opposed to the unity of Muslims, to the understanding between nations, countries, and Islamic governments, and to the religiosity and commitment to religion of the younger generation in these nations. They are intensely opposed to these and they will fight these with any means they can. It is the duty of all of us, the duty of all nations, and the duty of our governments to stand against this evil scheme of the US and Zionist regime.

Ask the All-knowing, All-powerful God for help. Strengthen the spirit of “Disavowal of the Polytheists” in yourselves, and oblige yourself to spread and strengthen this spirit in the environment where you are living.

I ask Almighty God to grant all of you Iranian and non-Iranian pilgrims, success and an accepted and blessed Hajj, and I wish for all of you the accepted prayers of the great Vestige of Allah remaining on earth [Imam Mahdi (aj)] – may our souls be sacrificed for him.

May God’s greetings and mercy be upon you

UN says US treatment of Guantanamo prisoners ‘inhuman and degrading’

Guantanamo

“I observed that after two decades of custody, the suffering of those detained is profound, and it’s ongoing,” UN special rapporteur Fionnuala Ni Aolain told reporters in New York.

“The US government must urgently provide judicial resolution, apology and guarantees of non-repetition,” she added.

Aolain’s comments came after she released a new report on Monday, which detailed her observations and recommendations after visiting the detention centre at Guantanamo Bay earlier this year – the first such visit by a UN expert.

“The world has and will not forget. Without accountability, there is no moving forward on Guantanamo,” she said in her report.

The report was released on the UN’s International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The US State Department released a statement to commemorate the day, stating: “The United States reaffirms our condemnation of torture wherever and whenever it occurs and stands in solidarity with victims and survivors of torture around the world.”

But UN experts have been critical of the American detention centre, saying that it has been an enduring symbol of human rights violations over the past two decades.

“The US Government is under a continuing obligation to complete thorough, independent, and effective investigations into alleged violations, sanction those responsible, provide appropriate redress and reparation to all victims and adopt effective guarantees of non-repetition,” the report states.

US President Joe Biden is under pressure to clear out uncharged prisoners at Guantanamo and move ahead with the trials of those accused of having direct ties to al-Qaeda.

But Aolain’s report went further, touching on issues pertaining to the rights and needs of former detainees who have been released but continue to deal with the lasting trauma from their detentions.

Her recommendations included removing former detainees from watchlists that “prevent them from the resumption of normal life in society”, and providing “as full rehabilitation as possible to the men who were detained at Guantanamo”, and address “the situation of men arbitrarily detained in Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates and any other countries where former detainees are being subject to serious violations of human rights”.

The prison at Guantanamo Bay was opened in 2002 in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent US-led “war on terror”. By 2003, it was holding 700 detainees. Since then, hundreds were released and transferred out without ever being charged with a crime.

There are 30 detainees who remain at the facility, with 16 of them being eligible for transfer out of the prison.

Nine are being tried via the military commission process and two have been convicted via the commission process.

The report was welcomed by rights groups as well as former detainees, who further stressed the call that in addition to the need for the US to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, Washington must provide financial reparations to those who were detained and tortured in the detention facilities.

“I was a victim of US torture by the CIA. I survived and have forgiven my torturers, and I am moving on with my life in Belize. But I still wait for an apology, medical care, and other compensation,” Majid Khan, a former detainee who was released earlier this year, said in a statement.

“I appreciate all the support that Belize has provided me, but responsibility lies with the US. It would mean a lot to me,” Khan added.

Biden began a quiet effort to close the detention centre with hopes of transferring out the remaining population eligible for release, but he is facing an obstacle with the detainees ineligible for release.

Many legal experts have stressed the military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay have been an “abject failure” and have called on the US government to put an end to the proceedings, which have for decades been stuck at the pre-trial stage.

“The government is obligated to provide rehabilitation, and the detainees are entitled to it, but the government is continuing to choose not to meet its obligation,” Yumna Rizvi, a policy analyst with the Center for Victims of Torture, said in a statement.

“The government’s response to the report is a denial of the existing reality as it relates to medical care of detainees. The government must address these issues immediately before the worst possible outcome occurs, the responsibility of which will fall squarely on its shoulders,” Rizvi added.
