Iranian FM: Time not on Israeli regime’s side

Amirabdollahian made the remark at a joint press conference with Hamas officials in Beirut on Wednesday at a time when Israel and Hamas have agreed on a 4-day truce mediated by regional actors.

He added that the resistance of Gaza also proved that the absolute losers of the war among the public opinion of the world, are the US and the fake Zionist regime.

The Iranian foreign minister also stressed that undoubtedly, only Palestinians will decide the future of Gaza and Palestine.

“We heard from the leaders of the resistance in the region that they will keep their fingers on the trigger until the fight against occupation in the region bears fruit,” added the top Iranian diplomat.

Hamas representative in Lebanon Ahmed Abdul Hadi for his part said at the press conference that the resistance movement imposed the ceasefire and its conditions on the enemy.

Abdul Hadi added that this achievement was made thanks to the resistance and perseverance of the Palestinian people.

He said Hamas has scored great victories during the recent ground battles in Gaza. The Hamas representative thanked Iran for standing by the people of Gaza during the Israeli war.

Abdul Hadi said all the victories of the resistance group came as a result of the efforts of the axis of resistance, above all the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran Leader: Israel knocked out by Hamas military operation

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a meeting with a group of Iranian athletes, sports personalities, and medal winners who participated in the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

“If I am going to offer you a breakdown on the recent developments, it goes as, the Zionist regime was knocked out in Al-Aqsa Storm,” the Leader said on Wednesday.

“[The Palestinian resistance movement] Hamas, not as a government and country with ample facilities, but as a combatant group, managed to deal a knockout blow to the usurping Zionists with all those facilities.”

Ayatollah Khamenei hailed those athletes who expressed their support for Palestine and the Palestinian cause, and withdrew from competing with the occupying regime’s representatives in international tournaments, saying the veracity of their act is now manifested more than ever before in the wake of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

“Today, the whole world has realized why the Iranian athlete will not agree to face the Zionist side on the field,” the Leader added.

“Because [the athlete] is a criminal and he is doing sports and going to the field for a criminal state; [therefore] helping him is helping a terrorist and criminal regime.”

Stressing that the Israeli regime is still reeling from the burden and disgrace of a heavy defeat after Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, the Leader said, “Yes, they are flexing muscles; but where? This show of power has no value when it comes to the hospitals for patients in Gaza, to the schools in Gaza, on the heads of the homeless people of Gaza.”

Ayatollah Khamenei added, “It’s as if an athlete loses on the field, and then in revenge for that loss, he attacks the fans of the opposing team, insults them and beats them up.”

Pointing to Israel’s incessant shelling of Gaza over the past 47 days, the Leader said, “There is nothing more ignominious than what the Zionist regime has perpetrated. The Zionist regime’s heavy defeat will not be compensated by these bombings; such bombardment campaigns will only shorten the life of the occupying regime; [and] this tyranny and cruelty will not go unanswered.”

Elsewhere in his address, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution censured the politicization of sports and the double-standard approach by certain international organizations.

“They say sports is not political, but when they need to politicize sports, they politicize it in the worst way. At the slightest excuse, a country is banned from participating in all international sports events. Why? [Because] You fought somewhere; but they, themselves, ignore the 5,000 martyred children in Gaza,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.

The Leader stressed that they ban a country on the pretext of war while ignoring another country’s war, war crimes, and even genocide.

Moscow refutes to comment on US allegations about Iranian missile supplies to Russia

Kremlin

“I don’t think this is worth a comment. We have been developing our relations with Iran, including defense cooperation, but we do not comment on this information,” Peskov stated.

Earlier, US National Security Council (NSC) Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said that Tehran may be considering providing Russia with ballistic missiles for use in Ukraine.

Both Iran and Russia have repeatedly denied claims that Tehran has provided Moscow with weapons to be used in the Ukraine war.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has stressed that Tehran’s defense cooperation with Moscow has never involved the use of Iranian drones or weapons in the Ukraine war as Russia itself is one of the world’s biggest arms producers and exporters.

“We have provided no parties [to the war] with drones for use in Ukraine,” he asserted.

Amirabdollahian further stated that last year he had himself asked Ukraine to submit its alleged anti-Iran evidence to Iranian military officials.

The Ukrainian side shunned a meeting with an Iranian military delegation in Warsaw, Poland, and it provided no acceptable documents in a later meeting in Oman, he added.

“It was agreed that the Ukrainian side will once again review its documents for examination in another meeting with the Iranian side. We repeatedly called for such a meeting, but the Ukrainian side did not attend a new round of talks,” he continued.

The Iranian foreign minister also expressed Iran’s objection to the arming of any party to the Ukraine war, saying the flow of American and Western weapons to the former Soviet country will stoke insecurity and instability there and cause further deaths and destruction.

Palestinian president calls hostage deal a “humanitarian truce” but pushes for ceasefire in Gaza

Gaza War

Israel and Hamas have reached a breakthrough deal in their ongoing conflict for a four-day humanitarian pause to allow the release of at least 50 hostages – women and children – held in Gaza, key negotiator Qatar announced Wednesday.

“President Mahmoud Abbas and the leadership welcome the humanitarian truce agreement and value the Qatari-Egyptian effort that has been made, and renew the call for a comprehensive cessation of the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and the entry of humanitarian aid,” the Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee Secretary-General Hussein Al-Sheikh said, according to Wafa.

Abbas called for a wider “implementation of a political solution based on legitimacy and international law, which leads to an end to the occupation and the Palestinian people’s attainment of their freedom, independence, and sovereignty”, Al-Sheikh added, according to Wafa.

The Israeli government has published the names of 300 Palestinian prisoners set for possible release as part of a wider agreement to release hostages held in Gaza.

The list included further details, including their ages and reason for arrest.

Under the terms of the recently negotiated deal, the Israeli Cabinet Secretariat announced 150 Palestinian prisoners would be released in four stages over four days, subject to at least 10 Israeli abductees being handed over to Israeli security forces each day. Israel said there would be a lull in the fighting during those four days.

While the initial agreement noted the hostages in Gaza will be released in exchange for 150 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli jails, the list published Wednesday by the Israeli government includes 300 names because Tel Aviv is offering the possibility that there will be a second phase of exchanges of prisoners for hostages.

In a statement, the Israeli Cabinet Secretariat added that phase two would work the same way as the initial exchange, including the release of Palestinians in groups subject to the freeing of at least 10 Israelis per day and a lull in the fighting.

The publication of the Israeli list of names on Wednesday morning (shortly before 1 a.m. ET) starts a 24-hour clock during which legal petitions against the release of Palestinian inmates can be filed to Israel’s Supreme Court. It is not clear whether any legal objections will be filed or whether the Supreme Court would agree to hear them if so.

Turkey says to ask UNSC, IAEA to verify whether Israel has nuclear bombs

Recep Tayyip Erdogan

“We will put forward initiatives both in the UN Security Council and in the IAEA on the issue that threatens the security of the region, especially Turkey,” the Star newspaper quoted the Turkish leader as saying at an economic forum in Algeria.

Erdogan earlier spoke about the need to verify the presence of nuclear weapons in Israel and the intention to initiate the relevant process in international structures, including after the June 20 government meeting. The Turkish president pointed out that Israel openly recognizes that it possesses nuclear weapons, but international structures, particularly the IAEA and the UN, do not conduct a corresponding investigation.

Erdogan also told the forum that Turkey would make efforts to rebuild Gaza and seek to hold Israel criminally responsible for crimes committed in the Palestinian enclave.

Heritage Minister Amihai Eliyahu caused outrage across the Muslim world this month when he floated the idea of dropping a “nuclear bomb” on Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netahyau suspended the minister from cabinet meetings following his comments.

Erdogan has harshly criticized Israel’s conduct in Gaza, labeling it a “terror state” and accusing the Israel Defense Forces of committing war crimes against the Palestinians. Netanyahu responded by accusing the Turkish president of supporting “the terrorist state of Hamas.”

The current round of violence between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7 when Palestinian fighters attacked Israeli communities, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking over 200 hostages. Israel responded with airstrikes and a ground invasion of Gaza. More than 14,000 Gazans have been killed by the bombardment, according to local officials.

Iran foreign minister calls for prosecution of Israeli officials over their “crimes in Gaza”

Gaza War

Amirabdollahian held a meeting on Tuesday with foreign ambassadors, heads and representatives of the Tehran-based international organizations at the Foreign Ministry to shed light on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s views, approaches and measures to help end the Zionist regime’s aggression against Gaza and help preserve the security in the region.

The minister elaborated on Iran’s views on the nature of the ongoing crisis and supporting the oppressed Palestinian nation based on their legitimate right to stand up against the occupation.

He highlighted the Islamic Republic of Iran’s constructive efforts in various bilateral, regional and international dimensions to put an end to the oppressive war against the Palestinian nation in Gaza and the West Bank, lift the siege on Gaza, immediately deliver humanitarian aid to the enclave, and stop the displacement of Palestinians in the Gaza Stip.

Amirabdollahian sounded upbeat that after the efforts made to establish ceasefire yield result, the brutal slaughter of defenseless citizens, including women and children, in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank will stop.

The Iranian foreign minister underlined that the Al-Aqsa operation was completely designed, decided and executed by Palestinians.

“The Zionist regime, under the shadow of its failure to confront the resistance forces, exacted revenge on the defenseless people of Gaza and the West Bank, which resulted in genocide, war crimes and the slaughter of over 14,000 Palestinian citizens, 70 percent of whom were children, women and the elderly,” he said.

Amirabdollahian stated that the United States has sent several messages to Iran to call on the resistance factions to exercise restraint, however he added it is in contradiction with Washington’s full support for the Zionist regime.

He pointed out, “Firstly, the Islamic Republic of Iran does not have any proxy groups in the region, and secondly, during the past 46 days, the dispatch of American military weapons to Tel Aviv has not stopped even for an hour.”

The Iranian foreign minister added Tehran has held extensive consultations at various levels, including by the country’s president with officials from other countries and international organizations, including the president’s letter to 50 heads of state worldwide.

He continued, “In all meetings, messages and diplomatic talks by the president and myself, with our foreign counterparts and international officials, we have emphasized and focused on preventing the conflict from spreading, establishing a ceasefire and delivering humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza.”

Further in his remarks, the Iranian foreign minister noted that the Zionist regime and the United States failed to achieve their military goals in the 46 days of war against Gaza, and referred to their political plans behind the political scenes for the post-conflict stage.

He stressed on the Palestinian nation’s right to determine its destiny, adding that the complete solution to the Palestinian crisis is holding a referendum with the participation of all real residents of Palestine. He said the Islamic Republic of Iran has registered the dimensions of this idea at the United Nations.

Amirabdollahian concluded his statements by thanking the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for his constructive diplomatic measures, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross for trying to provide aid to the people of Gaza, as well as some Arab and Islamic states for backing the Palestinian people and facilitating the delivery of aid to them and trying to establishing a ceasefire.

“We will continue our efforts, even after the end of the war, to put the perpetrators of these crimes and those who ordered them on trial in international courts,” he stated.

Iran’s UN envoy dismisses European accusations on nuclear deal commitments

Nuclear Negotiations in Vienna

In a letter to the United Nations secretary general and his Chinese counterpart, the rotating president of the UN Security Council, the Iranian ambassador rejected the recent accusation by France, Britain and Germany on Iran’s commitments to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He said the trio “made baseless accusations against Iran and claimed that it violated the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, while they have ignored their own flagrant violation of the resolution,” referring to the resolution that endorsed the JCPOA and put an end to the decades-long standoff between Iran and the West over Tehran’s nuclear program.

He stressed Iran has always adhered to its commitments under the agreement and has provided maximum cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), most importantly to clarify the origin of the uranium particles found in Iran containing 83.7 percent U-235.

The Iranian envoy stressed that the Islamic Republic has never enriched uranium beyond 60 percent.

He pointed out that reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency have confirmed there have been no deviations in Iran’s nuclear activities.

Iravani added the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to fulfill its full commitments under the JCPOA should the other parties to the deal do the same.

Tehran’s Valiasr Street: A verdant chronicle of transformation

Initially crafted by Reza Shah as the “Special Pahlavi Road,” it served royal commutes from the Marmar Palace to the north’s Saadabad, flanked by 24,000 plantain trees.

This route, once exclusive, faced transformations. It bore witness to wartime occupation, democratization, and urbanization.

The Allies’ wheels rolled upon its royal path, paving the way for public access. Subsequently, it evolved into the beating heart of Tehran, adorned with shops, arcades, and dwellings.

Though the street’s count of 7,000 surviving plane trees from the original 60,000 stands as a testament to resilience amid pollution and urbanization, their struggle is evident. Some succumbed to concrete encroachment or fell prey to commercial expansion. Yet, their stoic presence endures, symbolizing both perseverance and vulnerability in the face of modernity.

Beyond the trees, Valiasr Street remains a custodian of Tehran’s heritage. Parks like Mellat Park, Saei Park, and Student Park imbue the street with greenery and moments of respite amid the urban chaos.

Despite its relatively shorter history, Valiasr Street has ingrained itself as Tehran’s vital artery, echoing the essence and charm of its ancient counterparts.

Its narrative, a fusion of past opulence and present dynamism, continues to evolve, encapsulating Tehran’s enduring spirit of adaptation and endurance.

Iran asks BRICS states to designate Israel as terrorist entity, sever ties with Tel Aviv

“It is necessary that this fake regime be recognized as a terrorist regime and its army be regarded as a terrorist organization,” Raeisi said.

The plea was part of seven proposals submitted by the Iranian president to a virtual BRICS summit held at the organization’s headquarters in South Africa on Tuesday.

The summit was convened at Iran’s request to discuss the ongoing conflict in Palestine where the Israeli regime has killed more than 13,000 people in Gaza as part of a relentless war to confront resistance fighters in the territory.

In his address to the meeting, Raeisi stressed that BRICS members should unite their efforts to break an Israeli siege on Gaza and facilitate safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the territory, where more than 2.3 million people are in a dire humanitarian situation.

He also added that BRICS members should help set up an inquiry into Israel’s use of banned weapons in the Gaza war, including its use of white phosphorous bombs against the civilian population living in the territory.

The Iranian president further called on members of the bloc to recognize the right of the Palestinian nation to self-defense against the Israeli aggression as well as its struggle to liberate lands occupied by the Israeli regime over the past decades.

“With regards to the constant crimes [committed] by and the racist nature of the fake Israeli regime, free nations [of the world] expect all governments especially BRICS members to immediately put the issue of the severance of political, economic and military ties with the regime high on the agenda,” he continued.

Raeisi also added Iran will support a move by several BRICS countries to lodge a complaint against Israel in the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the crimes it has committed in Gaza.

However, he said that the prosecution in the ICC should also cover the United States and its support for the Israeli regime’s killing of children in Gaza.

BRICS stands for the initial letters of the names of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the five countries that initially formed the bloc to counter the Western hegemony. Iran and five other nations joined the grouping in January 2023.

Israel approves deal for temporary Gaza ceasefire, hostage release

Israel Hostages

The agreement came after talks on a Qatar-mediated deal that continued into the early hours of Wednesday morning, with Israeli media reporting heated exchanges between ministers of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

In the end, only three of the 38 members of the cabinet voted against the truce – National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and two other members of his far-right political party.

The prime minister’s office announced the deal would require Hamas to release at least 50 women and children during a four-day truce.  For every additional 10 hostages released, the pause would be extended by a day, it added, without mentioning the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange.

“Israel’s government is committed to return all the hostages home. Tonight, it approved the proposed deal as a first stage to achieving this goal,” it said in its brief statement.

Hamas, which controls Gaza, also released a statement, confirming that 50 women and children currently held in the territory would be freed in exchange for Israel releasing 150 Palestinian women and children from Israeli jails.

It said that Israel would also stop all military actions in Gaza, and that hundreds of trucks carrying humanitarian, medical and fuel aid would be allowed into the territory.

The accord is the first truce of a war in which Israel has flattened vast swathes of Gaza, which is home to about 2.3 million people. Palestinian officials say at least 14,100 people have been killed, while the United Nations says about 1.7 million people have been forced from their homes. Hamas killed at least 1,200 people in its attack on Israel.

Officials from Qatar, the United States, Israel and Hamas have for days been suggesting a deal was imminent.

In a statement issued later, Qatar confirmed the “success” of mediation efforts, which also involved Egypt and the United States, and confirmed the broad parameters of the agreement.

“The starting time of the pause will be announced within the next 24 hours and last for four days, subject to extension,” the statement added.

It confirmed that humanitarian aid would be sent to Gaza, and that 50 women and children held captive there would be released in exchange for “a number of Palestinian women and children detained in Israeli prisons”.

The “number of those released will be increased in later stages of implementing the agreement”, it noted without going into detail.

About 237 captives from Israel and several other countries are thought to be in Gaza, but foreign nationals are not thought to be part of the agreement.

Hamas has released only four captives since the abductions took place more than a month ago – an American mother and her daughter and two elderly Israeli women.

It has claimed some of the captives were killed in the Israeli bombardment.
