Frank-Walter Steinmeier made the remarks following talks with his Emirati counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in the United Arab Emirates’ capital, Abu Dhabi, on Saturday.

“In recent weeks and months they [the nuclear talks] were so encouraging that we maintained a chance of reaching an agreement,” Steinmeier said.

The top German diplomat further emphasized that Iran’s nuclear negotiations with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain – plus Germany “have certainly” advanced.

Tehran and the six world powers have been discussing ways to iron out differences and start drafting a final deal that would end the West’s dispute with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program.

Iran and its negotiating partners wrapped up their latest round of high-level nuclear talks on May 16. The next round of nuclear talks between the two sides is scheduled to be held in the Austrian capital Vienna from June 16 to 20.

Archaeologist Guntram Koch, Heidemarie’s husband, Bokhara director Ali Dehbahsi, and several Iranian scholars, including Hekmatollah Mollasalehi and Jaleh Amuzgar, attended the ceremony, the Persian service of ISNA reported on Friday.

Speaking at the ceremony, Heidemarie Koch, a professor of Iranian Studies at the University of Marburg, talked about her interest in archaeology and the history of Iran.

She said that she was a teacher of mathematics but became familiar with archeology when she married Guntram, who was studying archaeology at university.

Her interest in archaeology led her to study in that field and then she learned Persian and began her studies about Iran.

“It took a long time for me to travel to Iran and see Persepolis. When I was asked if what I saw was like what I read about Iran, I was happy to say yes. I visited Persepolis several times afterwards but still I like it,” she added.

Guntram Koch said his interest in archaeology and the history of the Achaemenids date back to his school days.

He added that he and his wife are thinking of publishing a magazine to present the images and information they have collected about the Achaemenid era from various countries, such has Turkey, Tajikistan, and Lebanon.

In his short speech, Mollasalehi said he regards Heidemarie Koch as a true researcher with a mind that is able to analyze a world that no longer exists.

Dehbashi read out a statement by Carlo Cereti, a professor of Iranian studies at the University of Rome, written in honor of Heidemarie Koch.

Mohsen Qamsari, the director for international affairs at the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), on Friday pointed to the daily export of 100,000 to 110,000 barrels of Iranian crude to Turkey, saying “The Turks have extended the oil contract with Iran.”

The energy official pointed out that the volume of Iran’s oil exports to Turkey has remained unchanged.

According to media reports, Turkey imported 478,000 tons of Iranian oil in March, making Iran its biggest crude exporter. During the period, Iraq and Nigeria were Turkey’s other key crude providers.

In February, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz stressed that his country will continue to import oil and natural gas from Iran.

Turkey has also expressed willingness to double natural gas imports from Iran if the two countries can agree on a price.

Turkey uses a significant portion of imported Iranian gas to generate electricity.

A senior Iranian commander has warned that Iran is capable of targeting the enemy’s strategic interests across the globe in case of any act of aggression against the Islamic Republic.

“We can target the crucial interests of the enemy at any location in the world if it harbors any ill intention,” said Deputy Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Hossein Salami addressing worshippers at Tehran’s Friday prayers.

Iran’s air defense can destroy the enemy’s aircraft at any altitude and the country’s drones are equipped with state-of-the-art operational capability, he added.

“We have accumulated and built up so much power that even if all of the enemy’s options unfold at the same time, it will bring them (enemies) nothing but defeat and disappointment,” the general underlined.

The remarks come following US President Barack Obama’s recent aggressive statements against Tehran.

In a commencement address at the US Military Academy on Wednesday, Obama said there is an opportunity to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear energy program but reiterated that Washington reserves “all options” against Iran, alluding to military action.

The Iranian commander also called on the Iranian nuclear negotiators to steadfastly uphold the Iranian nation’s rights in the course of the ongoing talks with the P5+1.

Iran and the six world powers have been discussing ways to iron out differences and start drafting a final deal that would end the West’s dispute with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program.

Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri has also warned that any US act of aggression against Iran will sound the death knell for Israel and see war engulfing the United States.

The top Iranian commander compared Obama’s remarks to “unattainable childish dreams.”
