Egypt religious institution forbids Muslims from joining ISIL

Egypt religious institution forbids Muslims from joining ISIL
Dar al-Ifta Spokesman Ibrahim Negm

Dar al-Ifta Spokesman Ibrahim Negm announced the fatwa on Friday, saying the ISIL’s terrorist activities in
Syria and Iraq “serve the enemies of Islam.”

The Sunni cleric also condemned the extremist group for committing crimes in Muslim nations in the name of religion. Negm said the ISIL has adopted the wrong interpretation of Islam.

Dar al-Ifta is Egypt’s official Islamic body that issues religious edicts.

ISIL, an al-Qaeda offshoot group that has been wreaking havoc in Syria, recently captured a number of cities in northern and north-central Iraq.

On Friday, top Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a religious decree calling on people to take up arms and defend their country against the Takfiri militants.

Iraqi men from all walks of life are flocking to recruitment centers to join the army in its fight against the ISIL extremists.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki also said authorities will arm citizens in Nineveh and Salahuddin provinces to fight the militants. Maliki has blamed Saudi Arabia and Qatar for the security crisis and growing terrorism in his country, denouncing Riyadh as a major supporter of global terrorism.

Over the past days, Iraqi armed forces have been engaged in fierce clashes with the terrorists, who have threatened to take their acts of violence to other Iraqi cities, including the capital, Baghdad.

The delegation, led by German representative at the nuclear talks Hans Dieter Lucas, arrived in the Iranian capital Tehran on Friday, and is scheduled to meet with Ali Akbar Velayati, a top advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, later in the day.

The German delegates are also slated to hold talks with Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, who is a top Iranian nuclear negotiator as well as Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, on Sunday.

The meetings come as top Iranian diplomats have already held separate bilateral talks with representatives from the United States, France and Russia.

The bilateral talks come ahead of the next round of negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear energy program scheduled for June 16-20 in the Austrian capital city of Vienna.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain – plus Germany have been discussing ways to iron out their differences and start drafting a final deal that would end the West’s dispute with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program.

Iran and its negotiating partners wrapped up their latest round of high-level nuclear talks in Vienna on May 16.

No Iranian forces in Iraq: Rouhani

Rouhani No Iranian forces in Iraq
Rouhani Iran Iraq

“The issue of Iranian forces’ engagement [in Iraq] has not been raised so far,” Rouhani said in a Saturday press conference in Tehran marking the first anniversary of his election.

Except for providing consultations in certain cases, Rouhani stressed, Iran will not engage in any military operations in other countries.

“If Iraq wants any help from us, we will study it. There has been no request from us so far. We are prepared to provide any assistance but within the framework of international law and based on the Iraqi people’s demands,” he pointed out.

The Iranian president also dismissed reports about ongoing cooperation between Iran and the US over the crisis in Iraq, saying, “The Americans may also want to help, but I haven’t received any word on that so far.”

Rouhani also warned Takfiri groups against conducting any terrorist operations near the Iranian borders, saying, “If any terrorist group wants to get close to our borders and we feel the threat, we will definitely respond with every possible means.”

The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Takfiri terrorist group has captured two Iraqi provincial capitals this week, namely Tikrit in the Salahuddin Province, and Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, in the northern province of Nineveh.

On Friday, top Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a religious decree calling on people to take up arms and defend their country against the Takfiri militants.

The Iraqi army is currently battling the terrorists on the outskirts of the city of Muqdadiyah, situated northeast of Baquba, in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala.

The extremist terrorists have threatened to take their acts of violence to other Iraqi cities, including the capital, Baghdad.

“It is evident that the Americans have committed these acts and the countries around us which do not even have a decent parliament have become concerned about democracy in Iraq and Syria,” Larijani said at a Friday conference in Tehran.

“This shows that the issue of terrorism has become a propaganda tool for the big powers,” he added.

Larijani warned that the Takfiri groups which have targeted the Islamic world “have tarnished the image of Muslims.”

Iraqi armed forces are engaged in heavy clashes with Takfiri militants advancing on the city of Baquba, located north of the capital, Baghdad.

Hundreds of Iraqi volunteers have rushed to army recruitment centers to join the fight against terrorism.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said on June 10 that his country was involved in a “war against terrorism,” stressing that Baghdad “will never permit Mosul and Nineveh to remain under the shadow of terror and the terrorists.”

“The Intelligence Ministry carries out very good and effective measures to counter elements [seeking] to undermine security in the country,” Ali Khazei added.

He noted that after the September 11, 2011 attacks, the Intelligence Ministry has been constantly involved in issues related to al-Qaeda terrorists in Iran as the group is making every effort to trigger insecurity in the country.

Khazaei said terrorist groups have failed to achieve their goals given major efforts made by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry.

He further added that terrorist groups and the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Takfiri militants are committing crimes in Muslim countries, including Iraq, with the support of the Israeli regime and the US.

Takfiri groups and ISIL are not enemies only to Shia Muslims as they have spelled out their hostility to Sunni Muslims as well, the official said, adding their recent crimes in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul are a clear example of that.

On June 10, the militants took control of Nineveh Province, including its capital Mosul, in a lightning advance, forcing “over 500,000 people in and around the city” to flee, according to Geneva-based International Organization for Migration (IOM).

During the past week, the so-called ISIL has continued its raids southward and has captured some other areas including the capital of Salah al-Din Province, Tikrit, where according to the IOM around 40,000 people have been displaced.

Iran’s national volleyball team beat their guests, Brazil, 3-2 in the second, fourth and fifth sets (18-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-17 and 15-9) in the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World League at Azadi Stadium in Tehran on Friday evening.

This was the 3rd confrontation between the two teams in the last 10 days.

The two teams will meet each other for a second match in Tehran, which will be their fourth and last, on Sunday.

The Brazilians came to realize Iran’s power and were surprised in the first leg of their two matches against the Asian champions in Brasilia last Friday, when the Iranians were about to win their first match against their hosts, but eventually lost the result.

Brazil, who have won several world and Olympic titles, defeated Iran 3-2 last Friday.

In their second match in Brasilia, Iran thrashed the Brazilians 3-0.

From the 6 points in Brasilia, Iran gained 4 and their hosts could only win 2 points from the two matches altogether.

Iran had earlier lost two matches to Italy with similar 3-0 results.

Brazil has won 9 titles in the world league and stood the second to Russia in 2013.

Sistani issues call to arms against Iraq ISIL militants

Iraq's top Shiite religious authority Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani

“Citizens who are able to bear arms and fight terrorists, defending their country and their people and their holy places, should volunteer and join the security forces to achieve this holy purpose,” his representative announced on his behalf during Friday prayers in the city of Karbala.

The Grand Ayatollah made the call to arms as so called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) foreign backed terrorists continue to commit crimes against Iraqi people including Shiites, Sunnis and Christians.

He had earlier called for all of the country’s political factions to unite against the insurgency in a statement released which condemned the capture of Nineveh province.

He has also voiced his support for the Iraqi army engaged in fighting against ISIL.

The extremist militants from ISIL have captured some parts of two provincial capitals this week, namely Tikrit in the Salahuddin Province and Iraq’s second city of Mosul in the northern Nineveh Province.

Over the past days, Iraqi armed forces have been engaged in fierce clashes with the extremist terrorists, who have threatened to take their acts of violence to other Iraqi cities, including the capital. Rouhani, Maliki Underline Fight against Terrorism

During the telephone conversation on Thursday, Rouhani and Al-Maliki called for effective measures to eradicate terrorism in Iraq in the wake of terrorist attacks by the militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the Arab country.

President Rouhani pointed to the necessity for fighting terrorism and violence, and said, “We condemn the recent crimes by terrorists against the innocent people of Iraq.”

The Iranian president reiterated that the Iranian nation and government always support the Iraqi nation and government, and said, “The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran will do its utmost in international and regional areas to confront terrorism and it will not allow the supporters of terrorists to disrupt security and stability of Iraq by exporting terrorism to Iraq.”

The Iraqi prime minister, for his part, thanked Iran for its supports from Iraqi nation in international and regional scenes, and briefed President Rouhani on the latest developments in northern Iraq and the success of the Iraqi government in suppressing the terrorists.

Just days ago, the Takfiri militants gained control of parts of the country’s Northern and North-central areas, including the city of Mosul. On June 10, the militants took control of Nineveh Province, forcing “over 500,000 people in and around” its capital Mosul to flee, according to Geneva-based International Organization for Migration.

Reports also indicated that, on June 11, the militants seized the city of Tikrit; shortly afterwards, however, Iraqi forces managed to recapture the central city, located roughly half way between Baghdad and Mosul.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on the international community to support the Iraqi government in its fight against the militants.

Takfiri groups are reportedly entering Iraq from neighboring Syria and Saudi Arabia to undermine security in the country.

Maliki has vowed to continue fighting the militants.

Who is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the notorious leader of ISIL

who is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
who is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

There are only two authenticated photos of him, and unlike al-Qaeda leaders such as Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, he does not appear in video messages.

Even his own fighters reportedly do not speak about seeing him face to face.

The ISIL chief also appears to wear a mask to address his commanders, earning the nickname “the invisible sheikh”.

But Baghdadi – a nom de guerre, rather than his real name – has good reason to maintain a veil of mystery.

One of his predecessors, Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi who headed the most violent terrorist group in Iraq until his death, was a high-profile showman whose secret location was eventually tracked down. He was killed in a US bombing raid in 2006.

The leader of al-Qaeda’s current incarnation in Iraq may be a shadowy figure, but his organization ISIL is pulling in thousands of new recruits and has become one of the most cohesive militias in the Middle East, reports say.

Baghdadi is believed to have been born in Samarra, north of Baghdad, in 1971.

Reports suggest he was a cleric in a mosque in the city around the time of the US-led invasion in 2003.

Some believe he was already a militant during the rule of Saddam Hussein. Others suggest he was radicalized during the four years he was held at Camp Bucca, a US facility in southern Iraq where many al-Qaeda commanders were detained.

He emerged as the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, one of the groups that later became ISIL, in 2010, and rose to prominence during the attempted merger with another terrorist group, al-Nusra Front in Syria.

He has not sworn allegiance to the leader of the al-Qaeda network, Zawahiri, who has urged ISIL to focus on Iraq and leave Syria to al-Nusra.

Baghdadi and his fighters have openly defied the al-Qaeda chief, leading some commentators to believe he now holds higher prestige among many Islamist militants.

“The true heir to Osama bin Laden may be ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi,” David Ignatius wrote in The Washington Post.

Zawahiri still has a lot of power by virtue of his franchises in Pakistan and the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa, reports claim.

But Baghdadi has a reputation as a highly organized and ruthless battlefield tactician, which analysts say makes his organization more attractive to young terrorists than that of Zawahiri, an extremist theologian.

In October 2011, the US officially designated Baghdadi as “terrorist” and offered a $10 million reward for information leading to his capture or death.

It notes Baghdadi’s aliases, including Abu Duaa and Dr Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim Ali al-Badri al-Samarrai.

As well as the uncertainty surrounding his true identity, his whereabouts are also unclear with reports he was in Raqqa in Syria.

So there remain more questions than answers about the leader of one of the world’s most dangerous terrorist groups.
