Iran dubs US decision on denying visa as ‘unwise’

UN
UN - IRAN

After the White House had announced that the US would not issue visa for Hamid Abutalebi, Iran’s representative body to the UN issued a statement, saying that the US act violated the country’s commitments in hosting the UN. “The act was also violation of countries’ natural rights and independence in appointing their permanent ambassadors,” the statement said, and that “the Islamic Republic of Iran would exploit all diplomatic possibilities to counteract this illegal act.”

UN still silent on US visa denial to Iran’s representative

The UN spokesperson refused to reveal any view of the US denial of visa to Iran’s would-be ambassador to the UN.

Dujarric said that neither the US nor Iran had asked for a ruling. “But the US informing the UN of its decision should trigger some statement,” the Inner Press quoted him to say.

Asked by Iran’s state TV reporter about the issue, Dujarric reiterated the UN former position. “This is a bilateral issue between Iran and the US, and the UN would not intervene,” he believed.

The statement by the UN spokesperson comes while; the Host Country Agreement makes the US committed to see necessary arrangements to facilitate the visa attainment for countries’ representatives to the UN.

The press meeting of the UN spokesperson was held an hour before the official statement by the White House’s Jay Carney that the US would not issue a visa for Mr. Abutalebi.

The UN spokesperson expressed hope that the US and Iran settle the issue successfully. Asked by a reporter as to the US commitment according to Host Country Agreement and commitment to facilitate visa acquirement, he told that the Agreement had clearly asserted the commitments by the UN and the US, “but in this particular case, I have no idea.”

The Innercity Press reporter asked the spokesperson “That is, since the Host Country Agreement hasn’t changed, why hasn’t the UN simply reiterated its precedential ruling on Arafat? Is the only difference the change in Secretaries General?” to which Dujarric told answered that the Host Country Agreement was in place which was signed immediately after the UN was established. “The verdict, however, had given after seeking the official position of the host country,” he added.

“About the issue of Iran’s ambassador to the UN, the US has not yet officially communicated the decision to the UN,” he said.

After the US had postponed issuing of a visa to Mr. Abutalebi, Iran’s proposed ambassador to the UN, political sensitivities had been in a record high.

Spokeswoman Slams Britain’s Anti-Iran Report as “Biased, Spiteful”

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office published a report about Iran on April 10, in which it has made allegations of human rights violation and restriction of freedom of expression against the Islamic Republic.

The report, titled “Iran – Country of Concern”, also criticizes the process of elections in Iran and raps Tehran for imposing the death penalty.

In reply, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Friday deplored the British report as “recurring, spiteful and based on a completely one-sided view on the realities” in Iran.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran works in active partnership in the international human rights communities with interactive morale and in the bilateral dialogs with the countries to raise the status of human rights globally,” she explained.

Afkham stressed that Iran emphasizes the respect for the other nations’ cultures, values and beliefs, noting that the Islamic Republic has always “expressed its basic opposition to the imposition of double standards and the political approach to the issue of human rights.”

“Unfortunately” she added “certain countries, along with the communities under their control, have utilized the human rights for their political objectives with political intentions.”

She also accused the British government of violating the rights of minorities, Muslims and migrants, saying given the numerous cases of human rights violation in Britain, London cannot define any procedures for the other nations, including the Iranian people and the democratically elected administration.

The Iranian spokeswoman further called on those which claim to be defenders of human rights to respect the other nations’ demands and begin with the human rights reforms from inside their own countries.

“If we face a threat, we respond to it strongly and firmly,” Major General Salehi said on Thursday, noting that the Armed Forces’ military capabilities and high degree of preparedness have enabled them to respond quickly in the face of possible threats.

The top-ranking general also announced that the most recent achievements of the Iranian Army will be put on display during military parades, slated for April 18, marking Iran’s National Army Day.

Iranian military commanders have on various occasions praised the country’s armed forces for manufacturing home-made military and defensive equipment, saying the indigenous weaponry have given the armed forces an advantage.

In relevant comments earlier in March, Major General Salehi had called on the local experts and technicians to put efforts into indigenizing the country’s military equipment.

In a visit to an exhibition of research and scientific achievements in an Air Force training center in Tehran at the time, Major General Salehi had expressed satisfaction with the great headway the Iranian cadets have made in the expertise in manufacturing home-made products.

The commander then called on the whole military instructors and cadets to zero in on manufacturing indigenous equipment for the country’s armed forces.

He also asked the sophisticated military experts to transfer their experience to the next generation of young technicians, whom he said will shape the future of the armed forces.

“Everybody should know that although negotiations [between Iran and world powers] are going on, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s activities in the field of nuclear research and development will never stop and none of Iran’s nuclear achievements will be shut down. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s relations with Iran must be conventional relations, not extraordinary,” Ayatollah Khamenei told Iran’s nuclear officials and experts in Tehran on Wednesday.

The Leader said it has been proven that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons but every time US officials talk about the nuclear issue, they always raise the issue of nuclear weapons directly or indirectly.

“This is while they (US officials) know that not having nuclear weapons is the definite policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Ayatollah Khamenei noted, adding, “Of course, negotiations do not mean the Islamic Republic of Iran will give up its scientific nuclear endeavor.”

Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that Iranian negotiators must insist on the continuation of nuclear research and development.

“None of the country’s nuclear achievements can be shut down and no one has the right to make a concession over them and no one will do such a thing,” said the Leader.

Ayatollah Khamenei stated that negotiations must continue on the nuclear issue, adding, “Our country’s negotiators must not accept bullying from the other [negotiating] party.”

The Leader said that Iranian authorities must be zealous about the country’s nuclear achievements.

Iran, world powers conclude nuclear talks

Iran and p-5+1 nuclear talk

The talks, which started on Tuesday in Vienna, ended on Wednesday between deputy foreign ministers of Iran and the six powers – the US, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany.

After the end of the talks, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran and the world powers agreed to meet again on May 13.

“We are entering the next stage of talks and we try to narrow bridges,” Zarif said in a joint press conference with EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton.

Ashton, for her part, said “a lot of intensive work” is still needed to bridge differences about Iran’s nuclear program.

“We now move to the next stage of the negotiations in which we will aim to bridge the gaps in all the key areas and work on the concrete elements of a possible comprehensive agreement,” she said.

Iran and the world powers reached an interim deal on November 24, 2013, in the Swiss city of Geneva. The deal took effect on January 20.

Under the Geneva deal, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe.

On Wednesday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said Iran’s nuclear research and development activities will never stop.
