A city councilor takes a dip, of a different sort

city councilor-Bandar Abbas-8

In a symbolic act inspired by Hans Brinker in The Little Dutch Boy Who Saved Holland, a member of Bandar Abbas City Council has parked himself in front of a sewage pipe that empties wastewater into the sea.

Kianoosh Jahanbakhsh took the symbolic measure one hour before the city council convened and attended the meeting soaked simply to draw the attention of fellow councilors and other officials in the southern port city to the release of dirty water into sea.

In explaining the move, he later said that the Water and Sewage Authority of the port city has been releasing wastewater into the sea for a dozen years. “What law in the country allows this company to take such a destructive measure against the environment?”

The provincial Environment Protection Department and environment activists have been protesting the move for years but their efforts to stem the flow of dirty water into sea have not produced any results yet.

Iran inks gas deal as Omani minister visits

Iran and Oman have signed an agreement on studying an undersea gas pipeline across the Persian Gulf in a project worth $60 billion, the managing director of the National Iranian Gas Exports Company (NIGEC) said.

Two separate agreements were signed for studies in the offshore and onshore sections, with Omani Oil Minister Mohammad bin Hamad al-Rumhy visiting Tehran, Alireza Kameli said.

The offshore deal was signed by the Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company (IOEC) and Oman’s Oil Ministry. For the onshore section, an agreement was signed between the Pars Consulting Engineering Company and the Omani side.

The offshore section envisages laying 200 km of pipes from Kuh-e Mubarak in Iran to Oman’s Sohar port in five months. The onshore section of the pipeline in Iran will be built for another 200 km from Rudan to Kuh-e Mubarak in six months.

The $60 billion deal was concluded during President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to Muscat in 2013 to ship 28 million cubic meters per day of Iranian gas to Oman for a period of 15 years.

The two countries signed another deal in 2007 to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Oman to process the Iranian gas.

Oman has undertaken to pay the entire cost of the pipeline and the related infrastructure, according to Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh.

“Gas exports to Oman and entry into its retail market will make it possible to sell the Iranian natural gas to the region, especially Asian countries,” he has said.

In July, Kameli said the Persian Gulf littoral states are Iran’s top priority for gas exports despite requests by European companies.

“Currently, many countries have voiced readiness to invest in our upstream and downstream gas sector and are seriously pushing for imports of Iranian gas.

“Although we cannot ignore the European gas market, exports to Europe come later on the list of our priorities,” Kameli said.

Iran welcomes boosting cooperation with Total

Iran’s deputy oil minister has said Tehran welcomes expansion of energy cooperation with French oil giant Total.

“National Iranian Oil Company welcomes expansion of cooperation with Total,” Rokneddin Javadi was quoted as saying.

“Total has already voiced readiness to sign new contracts with Iran,” said Javadi after a meeting with Arnaund Breuillac, the president of exploration & production at Total Company.

He also pointed to the new contracts prepared by the NIOC and said great cooperation opportunities will open up once the contracts are unveiled.

Arnaund Breuillac also held separate meetings with senior officials including Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh Sunday.

Closer cooperation on exploration, production and marketing crude and LNG as well as petrochemical products was among issues discussed at the meeting.

New oil deals

Iran’s oil officials have announced that they will unveil new contracts in early November.

“The first phase of the new contracts will be unveiled in November in Tehran and a follow-up conference will be held in one month or two in London,” NIOC chief Rokneddin Javadi has been quoted as saying.

Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said in August that new oil development contracts will be unveiled at a conference in London slated for December.

“New agreements with foreign companies will be signed within the framework of Iran Petroleum Contract (IPC) which I think will be more attractive,” he said.

The IPC will be a modification of the traditional buy-back risk service contracts and have been specifically designed to increase the attractiveness of Iranian oil projects to foreign investors.

It offers different stages of exploration, development and production to the contractors as an integrated package.

Iran sits on the world’s fourth-biggest oil reserves and seeks to raise its crude output in a bid to regain its market share.

The country had the second-biggest output in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) before the US-led sanctions banning the purchase, transport, finance and insuring of its crude began in July 2012.

Iran currently exports more than one million barrels of oil per day. It has already unveiled plans to add another million to its export capacity within six months after the removal of sanctions as a result of the nuclear agreement between Iran and P5+1.

The removal of the sanctions is expected to take effect in the first half of 2016.

France has inaugurated a business development office in Tehran as part of efforts to strengthen economic ties with Iran.

French Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll and Minister of State for Foreign Trade Matthias Fekl inaugurated the “Business France” office on Monday.

Leading a 100-strong delegation, the French officials have already held talks with their Iranian counterparts to discuss ways to boost bilateral trade ties between Tehran and Paris.

Two cooperation agreements were signed during a meeting attended by senior Iranian and French officials on Monday.

Mohammad Reza Najafimanesh, a member of Iran-France Joint Chamber of Commerce, said two French delegations including representatives from major oil and auto companies will visit Iran to hold talks with their Iranian counterparts later this year.

Facilitating bilateral trade

French Minister of State for Foreign Trade Matthias Fekl also held a separate meeting with Minister of Industries, Mines and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh on Monday.

The two sides agreed on forming a joint working group to facilitate trade and industrial ties between Iran and France.

“The new round of cooperation should lead to joint investment and transfer of technology,” Nematzadeh was quoted as saying.

He said Iran sets no limits on the activities of European companies, including French firms, but insists that products should be made inside the country.

The French official said that Paris seeks to establish long-term economic ties with Iran through joint ventures.

Iran is interested in French companies’ investment in hotel construction and training in hotel management, Vice-President and Director of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization Masoud Soltanifar said in a meeting with a visiting French trade delegation Monday.

Soltanifar welcomed French investment in the field of hotel construction and hotel management and added that France’s participation in building two hotels near Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA) marks the beginning of Tehran-Paris cooperation in the tourism industry.

France Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll recalled the millennia-old civilization of Iran and France and said that Iran has plenty of historical sites and excellent handicrafts.

He pointed to a lot of similarities between the two countries and said tourism will be boosted between Iran and France.

On top of infrastructure development, Iran needs training for restaurant and hotel management. France can share its experience in this field with Iran, Le Foll said.

Soltanifar said that Iranian and French businessmen should draft an agreement to be signed by the two countries’ presidents when President Rouhani flies to Paris later this year.

IAEA hails ‘significant progress’ in Iran roadmap implementation

Amano

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has hailed the “significant progress” made in the implementation of a roadmap signed between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog in July.

“Significant progress has been achieved,” Yukiya Amano told reporters in the Austrian capital Vienna on Monday, a day after visiting Iran.

The IAEA chief, however, stressed that “much work remains” to be done so that the agency could complete its investigation of Iran’s nuclear program before the December 15 deadline set in the roadmap.

During his short stay in Iran, Amano met with several high-ranking Iranian officials, including President Rouhani, and also visited Parchin military site near Tehran.

[Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi hailed the visit too, and said Yukiya Amano was quite content when he left Tehran. “Amano’s visit to Iran was very successful,” Salehi told reporters.]

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced that Iranian experts took samples from Parchin site in accordance with relevant directives and procedures, and submitted them to the UN nuclear agency.

“Iranian experts took environmental samples from specific locations at Parchin complex without the presence of the Agency’s inspectors,” said the spokesman of the AEOI Behrouz Kamalvandi.

He said the sample-taking followed recent talks between Iran and the IAEA on mutual cooperation within the framework of the roadmap.

Parchin samples authentic: IAEA

Amano confirmed the “authenticity” of the Parchin samples, saying the UN nuclear agency “monitored” the sampling process.

“The agency can confirm the integrity of the sampling process and the authenticity of the samples, which were taken at places of interest to the agency at the particular location in Parchin,” he stated, adding, “Authentication by the agency of the samples was achieved through use of an established verification process. The process was carried out under our responsibility and monitoring.”

Peace-themed artwork to be created by 2,000 individuals

bozorgmehr4

Hachure, an artwork by Iranian cartoonist Bozorgmehr Hosseinpour, has been put on display at “Art for Peace” exhibition at Tehran’s Niavaran Cultural Center. Honaronline.ir has asked the artist what inspired him to present an artwork which gives the exhibition visitors a chance to contribute to its creation. The following is the translation of his remarks in the interview: Old magazine games in which numbered dots had to be connected to create an image inspired me to create Hachure. I decided to put 2,000 numbered dots in the work, so that every visitor can draw a line on it and thus contribute to the creation of the final image. Some 2,000 people should cooperate to create the peace-themed image and I think such unity for creation of art can be a symbol of peace by itself. The picture is dedicated to children who can’t bear war and violence. After I was asked by organizers of the exhibition to take part in the expo, I told them I definitely would if I came up with a creative idea. The exhibition of 3rd Art for Peace Festival which opened on September 11 ran through September 21 which marks International Day of Peace.

Stage and screen heavyweight calls on Iranians to back nuclear deal

Ezatollah-Entezami-1

Ezatollah Entezami, a veteran actor, has asked the Iranian people to support the nuclear deal the country has inked with P5+1, and said the Vienna deal showed to the whole world that Iranians favor peace over war.

Iran newspaper on September 20 published an opinion piece by the renowned actor on the Iran nuclear accord and the necessity of public support for the deal. The following is the translation of the piece in its entirety:

I am Ezatollah Entezami who is widely known as “Mr. Actor” [Entezami has been named the greatest actor in the history of Iranian cinema] thanks to your [the Iranian people’s] favor. I have always been known for being a peace-seeking individual, one who does not condone violence and conflict, one who hates political disputes and calls for differences to be patched up peacefully.

Now that our country, Iran, has successfully and proudly taken care of one of its most daunting challenges after years of ups and downs and has managed to clinch a deal with world powers following two years of marathon talks and lift the ominous cloud of war and embrace serenity, for my part, I – as a zealous Iranian – lend support to this big national achievement and call on all pundits to support the Iran nuclear deal.

There is no need to remind you that we have gone through stressful years, those nightmarish years when we were under constant threats and sanctions on multiple fronts. Economic sanctions were the most dangerous sanctions. These sanctions created a highly critical situation in our country. Our national currency [lost its value and] hit the bottom of the barrel, the country was pushed to the brink of bankruptcy and an 80m-strong nation was plunged into a period fraught with painful and agonizing moments.

It is anybody’s guess what the future would have had in store for this nation, in the absence of this deal [the Iran nuclear deal]. We, the Iranian nation, which has gone through excruciating pains, should not forget those hard years.

Over the years when resolutions were issued against Iran at the UN Security Council one after another, some in the country would mock such resolutions. Their mocking put the country on the verge of war.

What saved the country and pulled it back from the brink of war was the public vote in the 2013 elections. People gave the elected president a mandate to save the country from the crisis.

Building on people’s vote [for the president], the man the president appointed foreign minister entered the [nuclear] talks with a stronger bargaining power and came out with his head held up high. These talks proved to the entire world that the Iranian nation is seeking peace, not war. This is a nation which wants to be present in negotiating rooms for peace, not on battlefields. This is a nation that wants to enjoy security and avoid tensions.

This is the real face of Iran, a face on which wisdom and rationality are more noticeable than anger. The Iranian people are after tranquility. They want calm so that they can think of better days to come. [They are seeking] a promising future for all generations. Like fellow Iranians, I think and care about the future of Iran, a [better] Iran for all Iranians, both for my contemporaries and those who will be born here in the future. [We think of] an Iran in which we can get the better of all problems and think – unconcernedly – about the establishment of full democracy. I take a bow to the Iranian people.
