Highlights of Ettela’at newspaper on October 5

♦ Iranians have bid an emotional final farewell to the victims of the Mina tragedy.

Funeral processions were held in 14 provinces for 104 of the Iranian pilgrims killed in a stampede near Mecca, Saudi Arabia on September 24.

♦ The Supreme Leader has attended a service to honor the memory of the Iranians who were killed in the deadly stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia.

♦ Last year saw the creation of 700,000 jobs. An additional 300,000 were lost.

The labor minister has said that Iran’s economy is coming out of recession.

♦ President Assad of Syria has said his relationship with Imam Khamenei is brotherly.

He further said that building on Iran’s support, Syria will defeat terrorism.

♦ President Rouhani has told the visiting Croatian parliament speaker that Iran is ready to cooperate with the European Union in the fight against terrorism.

He further said in the post-nuclear deal era the stage is set for all-out expansion of economic ties.

♦ “Awareness of the younger generation is an asset,” said the chairman of the Expediency Council.

Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani further said expediency of the establishment and support for the revolution are the reasons why people and the elite are keeping silent in the face of excessive demands by some.

♦ An official with the Environment Protection Organization has said that the country’s precipitation levels are down 15 percent.

In some areas in Tehran Province, temperatures have risen by 4.5º-5º C.

♦ Hamid Mirzadeh, the president of the Islamic Azad University, has said that the number of Ph.D. students the university admits has increased 4.5-fold in two years.

Young billionaire stands trial on corruption charges (PHOTOS)

The trial of Babak Zanjani, a young billionaire who stands accused of corruption on earth and massive fraud, is underway at branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran.

The oil billionaire’s trial, presided over by Judge Abolghasem Salavati, opened on Saturday (October 3) and its third hearing was held on Monday.

President: Iran Ready for Anti-Terror Cooperation with EU

President Hassan Rouhani has voiced Tehran’s willingness to cooperate with the European Union in the battle against terrorism.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to cooperate with all countries, including (member states of) the European Union, in fighting terrorism,” President Rouhani said Sunday in a meeting with visiting Croatia’s Parliament Speaker Josip Leko.

He stressed that Iran has assumed a more active and effective role in the fight against terrorism.

Likening acts of terrorism and violence to a “contagious disease” that has even plagued Europe, the Iranian chief executive said all countries should feel concerned about these threats.

He further expressed Tehran’s readiness to hold consultations with Zagreb on issues of mutual interest, as well as regional and international developments.

The president also underlined that the conclusion of nuclear talks between Iran and six major world powers has opened the door for the expansion of economic ties between the two countries.

For his part, Leko said Croatia regards Iran as a “major power” with a large economy not only at both regional and international levels.

He said Zagreb is resolved to bolster ties with Tehran, noting that such strong relations will contribute to the establishment of regional and international peace and stability.

Leko added that Croatia attaches great significance to Iran’s stances on settlement of regional crises, particularly the conflicts in Iraq and Syria.

Iran condemns US airstrike on Afghanistan’s Kunduz hospital

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham has strongly condemned Saturday’s airstrikes by the US on a hospital in Afghanistan’s Kunduz province which resulted in death and injury of dozens of innocent civilians, including women and children.

“This attack is irresponsible and unjustifiable,” Afkham said condemning the US-led coalition attack on the Kunduz hospital.

“Ignoring the basic rights of the oppressed people of Afghanistan for whom even treatment centers are not safe is a result of the interfering approaches of the US and the coalition,” the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman added.

Reiterating the importance of restoration of tranquility and security in the neighboring Afghanistan for the Islamic Republic of Iran, Afkham went on to say, “We hope that international bodies will seriously and resolutely fulfill their duties and take all the necessary measures to prevent the repeat of such incidents (in the future).”

Iran supports Russia’s anti-terror airstrikes in Syria

A senior Iranian diplomat has reaffirmed Iran’s support for Russia’s airstrikes against IS terrorists waging havoc in the war-ravaged country of Syria.

“Tehran supports Moscow’s anti-terrorism measures in Syria and its aid to the Syria Army,” ISNA news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian as saying Sunday.

Iran and Russia have always supported the people and government of Syria in the face of terrorism, he added.

Moscow began its military campaign against terrorists in Syria on September 30 upon a request from the Syrian government.

The deputy foreign minister stressed that US policies on terrorism have resulted in regional instability, adding, Washington’s support for the Saudi war on “the people of Yemen” has led to the formation of “a new wave” of terrorism in the Middle East that is further “threatening the world.”

The international community should take the threat of terrorism in Syria, Iraq and Yemen seriously, Amir-Abdollahian noted.

Washington Post reporter part of plot to oust Iran gov’t: MP

The Washington Post’s correspondent in Tehran, Jason Rezaian, was part of a scheme to overthrow the Iranian government, an Iranian MP says.

Citing a report by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s Intelligence Department, Nozar Shafiei, the spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian parliament, said Sunday that Rezaian was tasked with implementing a scenario orchestrated by a group of US Senators who believe that if the US can revived the relations it had with Tehran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian government could easily be toppled.

Shafiei said Rezaian is an American national of Iranian origin and a “very important element” for Washington, “so much so that the Americans are trying hard to secure his release.”

Rezaian was arrested along with his wife, Yeganeh Salehi in Iran on July 22, 2014 on charges of espionage, collaborating with hostile governments, gathering classified information and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic.

US officials have been pushing for Rezaian’s release ever since he was taken into custody.

Jason’s wife, who worked as a correspondent for the UAE-based newspaper National, was released on bail in October 2014.

Iran lawmakers pass single-urgency JCPOA motion

Iranian lawmakers have passed a single-urgency motion that allows the administration to voluntarily implement the July 14 nuclear agreement under certain conditions.

According to the motion, signed by 75 lawmakers, the Iranian administration has to actively pursue the policy of global nuclear disarmament and participate in all international, legal and diplomatic efforts in this regard.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as JCPOA, is based on cooperation and mutual respect between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, the motion states, adding that any pressure and threat against Iran would lead to a rethink of bilateral cooperation.

The motion stipulates that the Iranian administration should stop its voluntary activities and adopt reciprocal measures to restore the rights of the Iranian nation in case the other side violates the terms of the agreement, particularly on the Western sanctions front.

According to the motion, any visit by inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should be conducted in line with international regulations and Iran’s national security.

The document also urges the administration to fully protect Iran’s classified military and security information and prohibit any type of IAEA access to the country’s military sites under the pretext of implementing the deal.

The lawmakers urged the Iranian executive branch and the armed forces to boost the country’s defense capabilities to protect Iran’s national security and interests.

Biglar Beigi Tekyeh (PHOTOS)

Biglar Beigi Tekyeh is a religious center in an old neighborhood of the capital of Kermanshah Province.

The center, which dates back to the Qajar era, was built by Abdollah Khan also known as Biglar Beigi.

A massive mirror hall on the western flank of the yard is graced with remarkable interior designs and a lot of inscriptions which date back to the reign of Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar.

Currently, the building is a museum where different styles of handwriting and old documents owned by the Biglar Beigis are on display.

Light concert at Tehran’s Azadi Tower (PHOTOS)

Azadi Tower hosted a light concert on October 3. The projection mapping light installation by German artist Philipp Geist had a number of guests, including the German ambassador to Iran and the engineers who contributed to the construction of the tower.

The event was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the German reunification, and Geist performed at the invitation of the German envoy in Tehran.

Warnings by President Rouhani and the IRGC commander to Saudi authorities over their behavior in the wake of the Mina tragedy dominated the front pages of Iranian newspapers on Sunday.

Ettela’at: “We won’t close our eyes to the bloodshed involving our loved ones; we will speak the language of force, whenever necessary,” President Rouhani said in a ceremony to welcome home the bodies of Iranian pilgrims killed in Mina.

The heads of the three branches of government were on hand for the ceremony at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport.

Asrar: The health minister has said that all Iranian pilgrims killed in the Mina tragedy will have been flown home by the end of the week [Friday].

Etemad: “We want a parliament that symbolizes civility and patience,” said Mohammad Reza Aref, [a reformist leader].

Haft-e Sobh: A day full of incidents in the capital

The oil billionaire went on trial [for corruption]; there was a fire at the Interior Ministry building; and a sit-in strike by opponents of the nuclear deal came to an end.

Iran: Parliament should not hold up the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, said Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi.

Javan: The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps has said that his men are “ready for the revenge order”.

Jomhouri Islami: The president has called for the formation of a fact-finding mission to investigate the Mina tragedy.

Kayhan: “Corruption on earth” is the charge the underling of the [reformist] Executives of Construction Party [a reference to Babak Zanjani] is facing.

Mardomsalari: Iran has six demands from Saudi Arabia [in connection with the Mina tragedy], said the vice president for legal affairs.

Payam-e Zaman: “[Foreign Minister] Zarif and [Secretary of State] Kerry have not held talks on Syria,” said the spokeswoman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
