Iran urges independent presidential vote in Lebanon

Velayati

A senior Iranian official says the Islamic Republic throws its weight behind national dialog in Lebanon, stressing the holding of presidential election in the Arab country without any foreign interference.

“[We] support Lebanese national dialog and efforts made to elect the country’s new president,” Ali-Akbar Velayati, a top adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, told reporters in Beirut on Monday.

He added that only the Lebanese people should elect the country’s new president, stressing, “Foreign sides should not interfere [in the election].”

He emphasized that Iran will never meddle in presidential vote in Lebanon as it is a domestic issue, and expressed hope that the Lebanese nation will elect a new president as soon as possible in an attempt to solve the existing problems in their country.

The Iranian official, however, emphasized that Tehran would spare no effort to help the Lebanese people choose a new president.

Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on November 11 postponed a presidential vote to December 2 due to lack of quorum.

The Lebanese lawmakers have failed for 31st consecutive time to elect a successor to former president Michel Suleiman since his term ended on May 25, 2014.

Iran’s call for reduction of Turkey-Russia tension

Velayati further pointed to the ongoing row between Russia and Turkey over Ankara’s downing of a Russian jet and called on both sides to make efforts to reduce the tension.

He hoped that such incidents would not take place again, saying the Middle East is already facing many problems and cannot bear any new challenges.

“However, this does not mean that Russia must not continue its legal … fight against terrorism in Syria, “The legal Syrian government has called on the Russian government to participate in measures that the Syrian army is conducting against terrorists,” the Leader’s adviser pointed out.

Velayati said that cooperation between Iran, Syria and Russia in the battle against terrorism is legal and on the rise.

On November 24, Turkey shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su-24M jet inside Syria, claiming that the aircraft violated the Turkish airspace. Russia rejects Turkey’s claim. The aircraft was on a mission targeting terrorists in Syria.

The aircraft’s two pilots ejected as it was going down in flames. One of them was killed by militants in Syria, while the second was picked up by the Syrian army.

Velayati arrived in the Lebanese capital on Monday at the head of a delegation to hold talks with the country’s officials on issues of mutual interest.

Ahead of his departure for Beirut, the Iranian official sat down with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in Damascus.

Iran denies link to Kenyans detained over spying, terror charges

Tehran has denied any links between Iran’s intelligence and security services and two Kenyans detained over spying and terror charges.

In a Monday statement, Iran’s embassy in the Kenyan capital Nairobi said that publicizing the case was “hasty and non-constructive.”

“The Islamic Republic has always valued its ties with African countries, especially with the Republic of Kenya, and therefore, expresses readiness to cooperate with relevant Kenyan officials in clarifying the case,” the statement said.

It also noted that Iran is ready to cooperate with the African nation in fighting terrorism.

On Saturday, Kenyan police claimed that the incarcerated Kenyans had confessed to planning terror attacks in Nairobi.

Baseless claims can’t justify killing Yemeni civilians: Spokesman

Jaberi-Ansari

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has rejected claims by a UAE official that military aggression by the Arab coalition on Yemen has been a response to Iran.

Spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari on Modnay said, “Such illegal and loose reasoning cannot justify the destruction of the infrastructure of a defenseless country and purposeful killing of thousands of oppressed innocent Yemeni citizens.”

Unfortunately, he added, some officials in neighboring Arab countries do not know any other excuse other than blaming the Islamic Republic of Iran for justifying their mistaken and destructive policies.

“They mistakenly assume that the policy of identifying Iran as a threat can still deceive the international community and peoples of the region so that they may disregard obvious  realities regarding the real sources of war-mongering and extremism,’ the spokesman said.

Iran deplores UN inaction to end siege on Yemen

Abdolahian

A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official has underlined Tehran’ s support for finding a negotiated solution to the crisis in Yemen, and criticized the UN for its inability to take effective steps to end the ongoing blockade of Yemen.

“Since the ineffective military intervention (in Yemen) got underway, the UN has been unable to take any effective measures to ease the sufferings of people and breaking the siege on the oppressed nation of Yemen,” Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian told reporters in Beirut on Monday.

Amir Abdollahian is accompanying Ali Akbar Velayati, an advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, on his visit to Beirut.

He said continued aggression against Yemen has resulted in further deaths of women, children and civilians.

Amir Abdollahian also renewed Iran’s support for UN-mediated talks between Yemeni groups.

Since March 26, the Saudis and their Arab allies have been launching military attacks against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.

US war on ISIL not real: Larijani

Larijani

Speaker of Iran’s Parliament Ali Larijani on Monday blamed the spread of terrorism in the Middle East on US warmongering policies, reiterating that the so-called war waged by Washington on terrorist groups is not real.

Addressing a gathering in Tehran, the top MP said that the problems faced by the Muslim world today are the result of the West’s behavior toward Islamic nations in the past.

The US warmongering policies led to the growth of terrorism in regional countries, and the existing problems have their roots in those policies, Larijani said.

The United States claimed to be fighting terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan, but what it did only exacerbated the growth of terrorism, he added.

“The US fight against Takfiri groups is not real but is a game the US plays to serve its own interests,” Larijani stressed.

Arba’een to be registered as UNESCO intangible heritage

Arbaeen-Walk-38

The mourning ceremony of Arba’een, which marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hossein, will be jointly registered by Iran and Iraq on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) intangible cultural heritage list.

Vice-President and Head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO) Masoud Soltanifar made the remark on Sunday and added that Arba’een is [one of] the largest congregation of Muslims in Karbala, a key pilgrimage site in the world.

Shafaqna Shia News Association on November 29 published Soltanifar’s remarks on Arba’een and its registration as UNESCO heritage. The following is the translation of part of his remarks:

Soltanifar said thanks to the diversity of Arba’een’s traditions, a high value has been placed on the ritual throughout history.

Muslims turn out in their millions for the religious ceremony and their presence has turned into a massive and glorious congregation of the followers of the third Shiite Imam among Muslims and freedom seekers, he added.

The ICHHTO chief went on to say that the registration of the Muslim festival at UNESCO helps protect and pass on the ritual and its spiritual values to future generations.

[Each year, mourning Shiites from different countries, mainly from Iran, march an 83 kilometer long route from Najaf to Karbala to attend the ritual ceremony.]

Arba’een mass march manifestation of devotion and faith: Leader

Leader

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the mass march toward the Iraqi city of Karbala to mark Arba’een (which marks 40 days after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the third Shiite Imam) is a show of faith and devotion.

Ayatollah Khamenei, who was addressing a group of Iranian clerics on Monday, described Arba’een as a “lasting privilege”.

The Leader said that the massive turnout of people from around the world and Iran for the march toward Karbala is a manifestation of the prominent features of the school of Prophet Mohammad’s Household.

“The combination of devotion and faith and wisdom and affection is among the unique features of the school of Prophet Muhammad’s Household,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Imam Hussein and 72 of his loyal companions, including family members, were martyred on Ashura, the tenth day of the lunar month of Muharram, in the battle of Karbala against the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid I, in 680 A.D. Imam Hussein was killed after he refused to pledge allegiance to the tyrant ruler.

Five million of these pilgrims are estimated to be coming from Iran. The pilgrims, among them Sunni Muslims and Christians, showed their commitment to Imam Hussein by walking tens of miles barefoot to reach his shrine.
