The Iranian sportswomen, who had opened the contest with a 4-1 triumph over Kyrgyzstan on October 15, crushed their Tajik opponents 6-0 in their second fixture yesterday.

Afsaneh Chatrenour scored Iran’s opener in the 9th minute, before Elham Annafcheh doubled her side’s lead six minutes later.

Fatemeh Qassemi scored a brace within few seconds in the 23rd and 24th minute, followed by another goal by Chatrenour in the 27th minute.

Ghazaleh Salehipour put the Iranian team’s sixth goal on the scoreboard in the 77th minute.

The CAFA U-19 Women’s Cup started in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on October 15, and came to an end on October 17, 2016.

The sports event brought together national under-19 soccer teams from Iran, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Iran’s Faghani Wins AFC ‘Referee of the Year’ Award

faghani

In a letter to General Secretary of Iran Football Federation (IFF) Alireza Asadi, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has invited Alireza Faghnai, as the AFC Referee of the Year, as well as Reza Sokhandan and Mohammadreza Mansouri, as best assistance referees of the year, to attend a ceremony due to be held in Kuala Lumpur on October 20.

The Iranian football referee team will receive the 2016 AFC’s Special Awards for Referees during the upcoming event for officiating the final match of Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in Rio de Janeiro.

As quoted by the AFC official website, since becoming a FIFA International referee in 2011, Faghani has been entrusted with a host of high profile matches. He was named the fourth referee for the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup between Brazil and Croatia. He was also tasked to officiate the 2014 AFC Champions League Final first leg match between Al-Hilal and Western Sydney Wanderers.

During the hugely successful Asian Cup 2015 Australia, Faghani was appointed to officiate the final match between Korea Republic and host nation Australia. Faghani also refereed the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup final, which saw Barcelona take on Argentina’s River Plate.

During the award-receiving ceremony, the 38-year-old Faghani will be joined by assistant referees and compatriots Reza Sokhandan and Mohammadreza Mansouri, both experienced referees in the Continent.

Iraqi Christians Vow to Bury ISIS in Mosul

Iraqi Christians who abandoned their homes in northern Iraq in the wake of an ISIS offensive, have joined Hashid al-Shaabi (the Iraqi voluntary forces, also known as the Popular Mobilization Units) to fight together against the terrorist group.
In an interview with Tasnim, commander of the Babylon Battalion, Ryan Salim al-Chaldani, said his men have sworn that they would turn Mosul into “a graveyard for ISIS.”
“As one of the groups within the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units, we believe that Mosul will be the last base for ISIS terrorists in Iraq,” he underlined.
Chaldani also said that all of the Iraqi armed forces have committed themselves to preventing the ISIS militants from fleeing to Syria or entering Mosul from the neighboring country.

The Christian fighters are under the command of high-ranking Iraqi commanders and are ready to block logistic or relief support for ISIS in the province of Mosul, he underscored.
Members of the Babylon Battalion come mainly from the towns around Mosul that ISIS captured in summer 2014 and proclaimed its headquarters in Iraq.
Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Christians have been displaced since June 2014. They had once numbered over 1 million, but the violence that followed a US-led invasion sent many Christians abroad, moving to other countries as refugees.
Since early Monday, the Iraqi military and its allies have launched a large-scale offensive to liberate Mosul.

Iran Air Force Conducts e-warfare Drills

Iran Air Force

The e-warfare exercises were held on Tuesday, the second day of ongoing drills codenamed Fada’eeyan-e Harim-e Velayat 6 (The Devotees of the Velayat Sanctuary 6).

Brigadier General Massoud Rouzkhosh, the spokesman for the maneuvers, said the Air Force used advanced communications systems and secure wireless or wire-connected networks, flight apparatus systems, and tactical systems during the drills.

The application of deceptive jamming methods against mock enemy radars were among the electronic warfare tactics employed by Falcon 50 aircraft on the second day, he said.

Later through the day, interceptor F-14 aircraft conducted aerial surveillance and other operations, while F-14 and MiG-29 fighters engaged in dogfights.

The drills also deploy domestically-built Sa’eqeh, F-4, F-5, and Sukhoi Su-24 jets, transport aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as a wide range of projectiles, including smart bombs and laser-guided missiles.

Rouzkhosh said among the maneuvers’ points of strength were the amplification of the force’s firepower and the enhancement of its precision targeting capabilities.

Iran says its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.

Iranian Adviser Urges West’s Genuine Fight against Terrorism

Hossein Amir Abdollahian

In a meeting with the Dutch ambassador to Iran on Monday, Director General of International Affairs at the Iranian Parliament Hossein Amir Abdollahian called on Western governments to take responsibility for countering Daesh.

Serious, not spurious, action is necessary to avert the spread of terrorist groups, he added.

For her part, Susanna Terstal deplored the humanitarian crises caused by terrorist groups, saying the Netherlands is carefully monitoring the situation in the Middle East and sees terrorist groups as a threat to the whole world.

In September, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani described terrorism as not a regional problem but a global one, and voiced Tehran’s willingness to enhance cooperation with European countries in the fight against the phenomenon.

Protest in Baghdad against Presence of Turkish Troops in Iraq

mosul

According to a report by Al Alam News Network, as translated by IFP, Iraqi people started their protest rallies in front of the Turkish embassy in northern Baghdad on Tuesday morning.

The demonstrators chanted slogans in support of the Iraqi army’s operation to liberate the ISIS-held city of Mosul, and criticized the presence of Turkish forces in Iraqi territory.

MosulTurkey has been locked in a row with Iraq’s central government about the presence of Turkish troops at the Bashiqa camp in northern Iraq, and over who should take part in the ongoing assault on Mosul.

Turkish soldiers have been training Kurdish peshmerga units at the Bashiqa camp near Mosul, and want them to be involved in the assault. Baghdad objects to the Turkish military presence there.

“Nobody should talk about our Bashiqa base. We will stay there. Bashiqa is our insurance against any kind of terrorist activities in Turkey,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said.

It is “out of the question” for Turkish troops to stay out of the US-backed Iraqi army offensive to retake Mosul.

“We will be in the operation and we will be at the table,” Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated in a televised speech on Monday. “Our brothers are there and our relatives are there. It is out of the question that we are not involved.”

Erdoğan’s comments came as Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced that the long-awaited operation to reclaim the city has begun.

In a sign that Turkey is trying to make some amends with Iraq, Turkish news reported on Monday that a diplomatic delegation is en route to Baghdad to discuss the offensive.

Twin Fires Kill At Least 22 in India

139507271033331668971234

More than 40 critically ill patients were in the ICU of a private hospital in the eastern state of Odisha when fire broke out Monday night, apparently after an electric short circuit.

Authorities said 19 people had died in the blaze, mostly from smoke inhalation.

More than 100 patients were rescued by firefighters who smashed windows to get them out of the burning building.

“Some patients were evacuated by breaking a window on the first floor and then they were lowered to the ground floor. And some of them were evacuated through the adjoining operation theater which was empty at that time,” said Odisha’s health secretary Arti Ahuja.

“There are about 106 people who are (now) in different private and government hospitals,” she told the NDTV news channel.

Two more people died early Tuesday morning when a high-rise luxury apartment block in the western city of Mumbai caught fire.

Firefighters said 11 people had to be rescued from the blaze and two died of asphyxiation after they became trapped in the stairwell. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

Such disasters are relatively common in India, partly because of poor safety standards.

In 2011 more than 90 patients were killed at a private hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata when a fire raged through a private hospital, trapping many patients inside the building.

Most died from inhaling toxic gases.

Ahuja said the hospital in Odisha had been sealed off and a detailed inquiry would be carried out to establish the cause of the disaster.

Local television stations showed images of firefighters wearing masks smashing glass panes to enter the building.

Sharat Kumar Sahu, a police officer at the site of the blaze, told AFP that the fire started in the dialysis ward in the four-storey building and quickly spread to the intensive care unit.

Sahu said more than 100 firefighters had battled the blaze for around five hours until it was brought under control.

Most of the critical patients were on ventilators and died in the blaze, he said.

The state’s chief minister Naveen Patnaik said Tuesday that he had visited the evacuated patients in hospital and ordered an inquiry into what he called a “tragic incident”.

A government relief fund would bear the cost of their treatment, he said on Twitter.
