Iran Strongly Condemns Israeli Fighter Jets’ Invasion of Syrian Territory

Iran Blasts Saudi Airstrike on Civilians in Yemen

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi on Saturday censured the Israeli fighter jets’ conspicuous assault on Syria, urging the United Nations to do its best to deter countries from committing such heinous crimes which shatter other states’ peace and undermine their security.

According to a Farsi report by Fars News Agency, he noted that the Israeli invasion of the Syrian territory, particularly, at a time when, the anti-terrorist front in Syria has gained an upper hand against the bloodthirsty terrorists in the country – expelling them from the Syrian cities and villages, indicates that the Zionist regime of Israel greatly benefits from supporting Takfiri [extremist] terrorists and seeks to protect its illegitimate interests by shoring them up.

Warning the world against the dire consequences the repetition of such provocative moves can lead to, Qassemi called on the UN to condemn the Israeli invasion and do its utmost to deter the bellicose and aggressive Zionist regime from perpetrating such brutal crimes against peace and security.

Top Commander Lauds Iranian Missiles’ ‘Exceptional’ Target Accuracy

The chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Baqeri

The chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Baqeri, says that currently, Iran possesses the technology of building missiles with a target accuracy of less than 10 metres, adding there are few countries in the world which has the technology.

According to a Farsi report by Tasnim, speaking on the sidelines of his visit to an Iranian military and defence exhibition, Baqeri added all the weaponry put on display in the exposition have been produced employing indigenous technology.

He stressed that the world is required to realise that all of Iran’s post-war young generations, involved in the field science, hold the belief that they can help their country achieve self-sufficiency in all fields.

“Other problems of the country seems minor in the light of such great achievements.”

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Calls for Constructive Regional Cooperation in Nowruz Message

On Saturday morning and just two days before the beginning of spring, Larijani congratulated his counterparts in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Turkey, and Uzbekistan on the ancient and globally renowned event of Nowruz (also known as Norooz).

Expressing best wishes for those nations, Larijani underlined that dealing with the regional challenges and combatting threats hinges on “constructive cooperation and interaction among all countries, particularly the neighbors.”

He also emphasized the significance of parliamentary negotiations in establishing sustainable security and closer ties, noting, “The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes any regional cooperation, particularly with the neighbors, on the basis of mutual respect, to contribute to security, progress and all-out economic, political and cultural development.”

In 2010, the UN General Assembly established March 21 as the International Day of Nowruz. The UN also celebrates the International Day of Happiness.

The international Nowruz Day was proclaimed at the initiative of several countries that share this holiday, including Iran, Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan.

Saudi Arabia Leading World’s Most Active Terrorist-Producing Factory: Iranian Official

Macron's Islamophobic Remarks Show He's Politically Immature: Iran

In remarks released on Friday, Ali Shamkhani denounced recent comments made by some “novice and inexperienced Saudi officials” about the Arab country’s campaign against terrorism and said they are seeking to shirk their responsibility toward its massive supports for Takfiri terrorism.

“Al Salman (the ruling family of Saudi King Salman) has created and is leading the world’s most active terrorist-producing factory in Saudi Arabia,” he noted.

The Iranian official went on to say that the Saudi rulers use petrodollars to support Wahhabi teachings which are based on hate, violence, and crimes.

In recent years, the Middle East region has been plagued with Takfiri terrorist groups like Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), which are believed to have been created and supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.

The terrorist groups, which claim to be Islamic but whose actions are anything but, have been committing heinous crimes not only against non-Muslims but mostly against Muslims in the region.

Iraq and Syria have been gripped by insurgency with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of their territories.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of the countries and supports their legitimate governments in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

In a statement released on Friday evening, the Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization said the necessary conditions for the dispatch of more than 85,000 Iranian pilgrims to this year’s Hajj have been met.

Following negotiations with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, the Iranian officials have been assured that the country’s pilgrims will be able to make a pilgrimage to Mecca with security and dignity, and will be offered appropriate consular and medical services, the statement added.

Iran’s authorities had held several rounds of talks with Saudi officials on the Hajj pilgrimage.

More than 1.8 million faithful took part in the 2016 Hajj, but Iranians stayed at home after tensions between Riyadh and Tehran boiled over following a deadly crush of people during the 2015 pilgrimage.

On September 2, 2015, thousands of people lost their lives in a deadly crush after Saudi authorities blocked a road in Mina during a ritual, forcing large crowds of pilgrims to collide.

The crush was the deadliest incident in the history of the pilgrimage. According to an Associated Press count based on official statements from the 36 countries that lost citizens in the disaster, more than 2,400 pilgrims were killed in the incident.

Saudi Arabia claims nearly 770 people were killed in the incident, but officials at Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization say about 4,700 people, including over 460 Iranian pilgrims, lost their lives.

Israel Announces Plans to Continue Military Attacks on Hezbollah in Syria

Israeli warplanes intruded Syrian airspace on Friday, striking several targets near the ancient city of Palmyra in the central part of the Arab country. The Syrian government said it had fired anti-aircraft missiles at the intruding Israeli jets. It said one warplane had been shot down and another damaged.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke about the incursion on Saturday, claiming that the strikes targeted weapons shipments to Hezbollah.

“When we identify attempts to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah and we have intelligence and it is operationally feasible, we act to prevent it,” he alleged. “That’s how it was yesterday and that’s how we shall continue to act.”

Hezbollah defended Lebanon against Israeli wars in 2000 and 2006. It has helped both prevent and contain the spillover into Lebanon of a terrorist campaign going on in Syria. The resistance movement has also been aiding the Syrian government in its own battle against extremist militants inside Syria.

The Syrian army has called the latest Israeli airstrikes “a desperate attempt” to help the Takfiri terrorist group of Daesh.

Israel, on the other hand, has been contributing to the terrorist campaign in Syria with the strikes against Hezbollah and the Syrian military and by offering medial treatment for the anti-Damascus militants in the Israeli-occupied Syrian territory of Golan Heights.

Last September, an Israeli lawmaker said Tel Aviv was directly aiding the terrorist group formerly known as al-Nusra Front in the Golan Heights.

Nuclear Deal Boosts Foreign Investment in Iran: Larijani

Larijani

Speaking in a press conference, Ali Larijani answered questions on a whole variety of issues. Here are excerpts from his comments.

Iran’s 6th National Development Plan

Efforts were made to realise 2.8 percent of an 8-percent economic growth envisaged in the 6th National Development Plan. A centerpiece of the plan is to wean the country off oil revenues. The nation’s dependence on petroleum earnings must not be more than 20% by 2021.

Three percent of the oil income has been allocated to oil-rich and less developed areas. The MPs have also obliged companies operating in these areas to set aside some funding to help tackle deprivation there. One of the problems which exist regarding underdeveloped areas is that private firms are reluctant to set up shop there. So, private companies which begin operating in such areas will be supported.

Due Regard for Agriculture Sector

Due attention should be paid to the agriculture sector and villages in the 6th National Development Plan. Migration from rural areas is one of the contributors to a rise in the population living on the outskirts of towns and cities. That has created difficulties. The parliament was seeking to strike at the root of the problem. Therefore, it proposed that focus be put on rural development, and it was decided that 5,000 villages be developed each year through joint ventures with the private sector.

In the 6th National Development Plan, one percent of oil and natural gas revenues will be set aside for the development and expansion of the country’s rail transportation system. It was also decided that annually some 270 neighbourhoods in cities be restructured, and the population living in suburbs be reduced by 10%.

Water Crisis

Our country is located in a region facing numerous problems in the water sector. This is another issue highlighted in the 6th National Development Plan. Ninety percent of the water consumed in the country goes to the agriculture sector. So, we decided to make an overhaul in that regard. First, we decided to further develop the pressurised irrigation system. The financing will come from the National Development Fund. Another measure to be adopted is to change the cultivation pattern in order to strike an overall balance in cultivating different crops. For example, some provinces face water shortage but they grow rice, so the cultivation pattern should change there. Also on the agenda are desalination projects in provinces adjacent to the sea, which would provide up to 30% of the water needed by the provinces.

Cultural Development

The 6th National Development Plan includes a chapter on culture. The bill presented by the administration had some weaknesses in the field of cultural activities. However, some parts were added to it and the chapter on culture was expanded. I think our cultural programs have been basically good, but we should pay more attention to the subject of culture. I’m not satisfied with the budget allocated to the culture sector in the next Iranian Year’s spending package. We don’t have enough resources. We need to wean the culture sector from its dependence on the government.

Government’s Economic Performance

The government has, to some extent, had good performance in realising the Economy of Resistance (economic resilience) idea [proposed by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.] In the agriculture, animal husbandry, mariculture and wheat sectors, for instance, we have witnessed good growth. Good steps have also been taken in the oil sector and petroleum sales are satisfactory. The Health Ministry has also made major strides. We should make up for the shortcomings in other sectors, too.

JCPOA’s Impact on Iran’s Economy

After the conclusion of the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group [known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or the JCPOA,] many countries sent representatives to Iran and signed memoranda of understanding with Tehran. Some American banks showed mischievous behavior while some other banks actually began their cooperation with Iran. The volume of foreign investment was not as much as expected. But to my knowledge, some Rls. 9 billion in foreign investment has been finalised. Some may say this is not a considerable figure. Well, it’s the starting point. We need to set the stage for further investment and work in the diplomatic arena as well. We have regarded the issue of economic diplomacy as the centerpiece of diplomatic activities. We should make efforts. The atmosphere is one of competition and, at times, weird mischief making. We all should lay the groundwork for foreign investment.

The commission tasked with realizing the Economy of Resistance idea keeps sending us reports on its decisions and activities. The commission is also going to release an official report to the people. When it comes to the Economy of Resistance initiative, I think we should take the government’s situation into account.

We should see under what circumstances the government is implementing its programs. In the years 2012 and 2013, we had some economic problems concerning inflation and debts. During those years, government’s debts to banks and the private sector amounted to Rls. 500 trillion. Some reports put the figure at Rls. 700 trillion. Now, it falls upon the current administration to settle the debt. It’s a whopping amount. That’s no way to run a country. The current administration has tried to prepare the ground for international investment in Iran.

The government has somehow managed to curb inflation. Everybody should work toward boosting the economy. We should work hard in the domain of economy for several years in order to get out of the current situation. The government gets an average score when it comes to economy.

May Elections

I’m a friend of [Iranian President Hassan] Rouhani. I’m not going to get involved in the upcoming presidential elections. It won’t be expedient for the Parliament to get involved in the election. The MPs didn’t get involved in the previous elections, either.

Alternative Punishments for Death Penalty

As for alternative penalties for capital punishment regarding those convicted of drug offences, I agree that the death penalty should not be used, as much as possible, for offenders convicted of drug-related crimes. However, there are different degrees to this, and the punishment should be deterrent.

Giant Eggs Coloured ahead of Nowruz

egg festival

It is an old Iranian custom to colour eggs during Nowruz, the Persian New Year.

According to a Farsi report by Tasnim, ahead of spring’s arrival, Tehran has been decorated with giant coloured eggs.

Several visual artists have painted these large eggs and the Municipality of Tehran has put the artworks on display.

It is a way to inject vitality into the society and beautify the urban space for Nowruz.

Here are photos of the giant coloured eggs:
