Iran’s First Woman Chopper Pilot Praised by Veteran Captains

In an interview with Borna News Agency, she has spoken about her first solo flight and the impact of her gender on her profession as a pilot. Excerpts from the interview follow.

– How old are you Ms. Shabani?

I was born in Shahr-e Kord in 1986. I grew up in Ahvaz. But we returned to Shahr-e Kord a few years ago and have been living there ever since. My father has passed away. My mother cannot read or write and is a housewife. I’m the youngest child in the family.

– How old were you when you began flying?

I was admitted to university in the field of aviation in [the academic year] 2005-2006. I have loved flying since then. When I entered university, I was sure that I would study piloting.

Iran’s First Woman Chopper Pilot Praised by Veteran Captains– Why are you so much interested in the sky and flying?

My father was very much keen on warplanes. Maybe that was because we lived in the city of Ahvaz and we were war-stricken. Anyway, he was the first person to make me interested in the sky and flying.

“I wish you would be able to become a warplane pilot,” he would always tell me.

So, I decided to make my father’s dream come true. Of course, I think all children like to become pilots.

– How effective were the captains and instructors who trained you?

Over the past several years, Captain Orgasi, Captain Rajabi and Captain Moradian have trained around 500 pilots for their first solo flights.

“I don’t want to see you as a girl from now on because I become worried,” said Capitan Orgasi when he was accompanying me during flight.

“You are so smart and clever,” he told me after a few flights.

He told me that he treated me that way because he wanted me to set aside my femininity while flying as “flying is no joke.”

Iran’s First Woman Chopper Pilot Praised by Veteran CaptainsSometimes while hovering (holding the helicopter still in the sky), the pilot may lose control, causing the chopper to begin spinning around! I was in such a situation once, and Captain Orgasi was on the helicopter as well. I was so stressed out that I told him, “I can’t. Help me.” Then he shouted at me and said, “I won’t help you. Either control it yourself or kill yourself.” After we landed, he told me, “You have stepped into this arena and you should behave like male pilots as of tomorrow and you shouldn’t be timid; or you should give up this job forever.” And I let go of the phobia of flight and of everything that might happen in the sky.

– How did you feel when you were able to fly the helicopter in a solo flight?

When you are flying a helicopter, your both legs and arms should work in coordination with one another. This coordination is so hard that you cannot think of anything else. In those moments, I was not even able to think about my 3-year-old son who I love. But on the same day that I was hovering, after I landed, I began screaming and Captain Orgasi gave me a big hand and started encouraging me.

When my instructors saw how determined I was to learn, and how much effort I putting into improving my performance, they would call me “Mr. Shabani! or Mr. Samira!” and they said I was fighting like a man in order to learn.

– Do you intend to become a helicopter pilot in the future?

Hundred percent. I’m going to stay in the domain of helicopter piloting. Choppers are used in different sectors such as nuclear, relief operations, etc., and I will probably begin working in one of these fields.

Chaharshanbeh Soori fireworks on the eve of the last Wednesday of the year, cleaning homes before the New Year, the Haft Seen table, visiting relatives, going to the graves of the lost loved ones, wearing new clothes during Nowruz and going to the nature on the 13th day of the New Year are the same for all Iranians.

However, the dishes of the first day of the New Year and the thirteenth day vary slightly in different cities. In some cities people eat their own special food in the New Year. There are also some customs and traditions that are observed in some cities.

Hajji Firuz in Tehran

One of the oldest customs observed in Tehran during Nowruz is the dancing of Hajji Firuz throughout the city in late March. He is a fictional character in the Iranian folklore who appears in the streets ahead of the New Year. His face is covered in soot, and he is clad in bright red clothes and a felt hat. He dances through the streets while singing and playing a tambourine.

People of Zanjan Celebrate ‘Fireworks Wednesday’ in Own Way

People of Zanjan Celebrate ‘Fireworks Wednesday’ in Own Way

Known as Chaharshanbe Suri, the ancient festivities are among major Persian heritage dating back to thousands of years deep into the history.

Most of these festivities have been forgotten over years but a few of them are still alive and observed in Iran.

In the northwestern province of Zanjan, people usually mark each Wednesday of the last Persian month, Esfand, by holding special ceremonies.

On the first Wednesday, they scatter some seeds of wheat, corn, lentil and mung in their yards, before their houses or wherever exposed to running water maintaining that the rain or running water will take the seeds away to the heart of nature. This, they believe, will provide them with their food for the next Persian year.

During the second Wednesday, they cut short the wool of their livestock and keep them at the barn. Then they begin to mark the day with dancing and holding other festivities.

On the third Wednesday, they go to their garden and hang some light stones from the branches of their trees using pieces of rope to remind the trees of the need to give fruits as soon as possible. Then they begin to dance in the garden. Sometimes, they gather around a fire and hold some special festivities.

During the last Wednesday of the last Persian month, they put on their new clothes and get on the roof of their houses. Then they make a fire and receive warmth, energy, and cleanness from it.

They return to their homes again and continue the festivity inside. They gather together and eat special dishes like the popular Sabzi Polo (herbed rice) with Fish.

After the dinner, the families begin to read out the poems of legendary Iranian poet Hafez. It is widely believed by Iranians that Hafez’s poetry will reveal the answer to their destiny.

Spring Has Arrived, but Winter Not Going to Leave!

What follows are ILNA’s photos of the face-off between winter and spring in Khorgam county of Rudbar in Gilan province:

‘Iran, Russia Ready to Resolve Differences in Venezuela’

According to Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed the settlement of the situation in Venezuela over the phone on Tuesday.

Hyperinflation has collapsed the economy of Venezuela and led to exodus of some 3 million people since 2015.

The legal president of the country Nicolas Maduro says the country is victim of an “economic war” led by political adversaries with the help of Washington.

Most Western nations have disavowed his government in favour of Juan Guaido, head of Congress, who invoked the constitution to assume the interim presidency in January after declaring Maduro’s 2018 re-election a fraud.

Top 6 Tools That Can Help You Edit Your Papers More Effectively

Use Advanced Proofreading Tools

Even in the era of technology, students can’t avoid dealing with a huge number of academic assignments. The papers they are expected to do have specific purposes and requirements which means that they cannot just write whatever they want.

To come up with a high-scoring piece, you should make sure it complies with all the academic standards and meets your tutor’s expectations. However, even if you know the purpose of a written assignment and have a lot of cool ideas about it, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is going to be perfect. So, what makes a well-written paper? Here are the criteria you should keep in mind:

  • Relevant topic
  • Original views
  • Well-supported ideas
  • Proper structure
  • Absence of mistakes
  • Cohesion and completeness

Of course, proofreading and editing are the two stages you can’t afford to skip. Thanks to them, you can spot all the mistakes you’ve made and get rid of them before your paper gets to your tutor. For simplicity’s sake, errors can be divided into two kinds — those which are easy to detect (e.g., typos, missing spaces, misspelled words, etc.), and those which aren’t (improper sentence structure, wordiness, missing logical connections, etc.).

The problem is that we cannot edit our papers properly because they all seem flawless to us. And that is precisely why having an unbiased third party proofread your paper is so important.

In the old days, proofreading a paper required work of competent editors and… lots of white-out. Now, you can simply press the “Backspace” button or take advantage of the numerous proofreading tools that can greatly speed up the editing process. They can be divided into two main categories:

  • Online checkers and browser extensions
  • Programs that you install on your device

So, let us take a closer look at some of them.

6 Best Editing Tools

There are a lot of proofreading tools available on the Internet, and each of them has their own unique features. Some are designed to detect grammar errors, while others can highlight punctuation or syntactical mistakes. We’ve picked top 6 grammar and spell checkers that can greatly improve the quality of your papers.

  1. Grammarly. This is one of the most popular tools for fixing spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes. Apart from machine editing, you can also use human-powered proofreading. The good thing about Grammarly is that it does not only highlight mistakes but also explains why it considers them as such. The tool offers you different solutions on how to avoid dangling modifiers, unclear antecedent, repetitive words, etc. However, you shouldn’t trust it blindly. Grammarly often makes false positives errors (especially with the passive voice or prepositions at the end of the sentence), so do not over-rely on it.
  2. Designed to run on Windows, this program analyzes the text you paste in it and suggests ways in which it can be improved. StyleWriter highlights very long sentences and misspelled words or phrases in different colors. If you click on a potential error, you can see its explanation and decide whether or not to apply the solution suggested by the tool. You can also monitor the overall analysis in small windows where the number and the average length of sentences, as well as mistakes distribution throughout the text, are shown.
  3. Cliche Finder. Cliches are good when you want your writing style to be easily recognizable. However, if you overdo it, you risk ending up with a dull and unoriginal paper. Cliche Finder helps you make your writing more insightful and to the point by identifying and eliminating redundant phrases.
  4. Hemingway is a tool for those who live by the motto “Brevity is the soul of wit.” It can make your writing style more laconic and understandable — just like that of Ernest Hemingway! Apart from detecting lexical and grammar mistakes, Hemingway can also suggest various ways in which you can construct complex sentences.
  5. Academic Platforms. These are services, not tools, although they can be quite useful sometimes. If you think you make too many mistakes, you may consider using some well-known online paper editing‌‌. Usually, such platforms do not only analyze your papers but also help you proofread and edit them.
  6. Anti-Plagiarism Services. Plagiarism should be a matter of grave concern to anyone who wants to come up with a unique paper. You can’t reinvent the bicycle, but you can make your paper more original by paraphrasing and avoiding repeating someone else’s thoughts word for word. We recommend using anti-plagiarism tools like Dupli Checker, Copyleacks, PlagScan, etc.

To sum up, editing is an absolutely vital part of the writing process. Your success as a writer depends greatly on it, so you should do your best to minimize the number of mistakes in your papers. Use one of the above tools, and we guarantee you’ll achieve the best results!

Austria Urges Europe Not to Dance to Trump’s Tune

Van der Bellen has urged Europe to act independently of the US and its incumbent president in an interview with the German newspaper Welt.

When asked about “the headache” that the US president gives the EU, the Austrian politician lashed out at Donald Trump for his withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and putting pressure on European businesses.

“US President Trump has pulled out from Iran’s nuclear deal, which Washington had negotiated and co-ordinated for years, with no reason and subsequently banned European companies from doing business with Iran, threatening with grave sanctions. I think that this goes too far. The Europeans do not have to dance when Trump whistles. This also applies to other points of discord”, Van der Bellen said, a report by Sputnik said.

At the same time, he said the ability to decide and act was the biggest challenge for the EU, pointing out that it often takes too long for it to agree on important issues. He was also alarmed at the implementation of a decision voted for by the majority of member states.

“I was alarmed when a majority vote had been taken to agree on the distribution of asylum seekers, and some heads of states said: we do not care”, the politician stated.

According to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement, Iran is required to not engage in the development of nuclear technologies for military use, with the deal’s other signatories, including the United States, promising to lift sanctions in exchange.

It was signed in 2015 after years of consultation, but in May 2018, President Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the JCPOA, prompting other parties, including Russia, China and European signatories, to scramble to try to save it. These efforts have focused on measures to bypass stringent US sanctions, as well as American threats to bring Iranian oil exports down “to zero”.

Recently, German Chancellor Angela Merkel received a standing ovation for her speech at the Munich Security Conference for statements echoing Van der Bellen’s sentiment. She condemned the unilateral moves made by the US, namely, the withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran, as well as criticized Washington’s stance toward the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Why Dedicated Translation Service and Not Machine Translation Is Key to Business Growth

While this is impressive, it can also be a reason for concern for many companies trying to enter the global market.

The problem with machine translation is it merely substitutes the words without really understanding the meaning behind them. Often, this is not enough because the translation is much more than just replacing words. Your content still has to make sense to connect with your readers.

The language conflicts

Fortunately, not all machine translations are outright incorrect. Some may turn out to be accurate, but you cannot leave your business on a chance like that. Although a few editing may rectify machine translated language, it is not the solution your business deserves. Anthony Teixeira, one of the leading French translators, said that to achieve high-quality content, the translation needs to have proper phrasing and the text needs to have context. The database of terminology of the translated language needs to be created by a professional human translator. It should not be left in the hands of technology because honestly, the results are often hilarious.

Your options

If you want to translate the language of your website to the native language of your target audience, here are three scenarios to consider:

  1. Follow machine translation religiously – as mentioned, machine translation will always have the risk of wrong grammar, and the resulting sentence may not make sense at all if the machine translator only translates words without focusing on the grammar and context of the text.
  2. Follow machine translation after light editing – another option that you may opt for is machine translation after a light editing by a human translator. The objective is to somehow make the text understandable. Although the text will be grammatically correct, the choice of words may still be doubtful.

iii.    Follow machine translation after heavy editing – this is closer to the perfection level, but is not quite up to the mark. A human translator will edit the machine translated text to provide a high-quality translation. But since the translator does not have the freedom to modify the content according to what the meaning should actually be as per the native language of your target audience, the output may not be satisfactory.

Human translation and proofreading

This is the fourth option that you can choose where there is no involvement of machine translation. If you value your brand and want your target audience to respond positively, you should hire a professional human translator. The process is rigorous, but the benefits are fruitful. This investment is particularly important for marketing collaterals, online websites, technical translations, and UIs where your brand name may be at risk if there is a grammatical inaccuracy.

Just like you find it odd when you see a typo in a website, your target audience with a different native language will find it odd when they can’t understand the translation. So, to avoid that confusion and embarrassment, hiring a human translator proves to be the only way to go. Through this, you can ensure that your content conveys the right message, thus boosting your chances of attracting more quality leads.

Several Wounded after Cargo Ship Capsizes in Southern Iran

The LS Star vessel completely overturned in the 25th quay of Shahid Rajaee Port. Reports say some of the crew of the ship have sustained injuries, including one that has lost one of his legs after collapse of the containers.

An official said lack of coordination between the ship’s officer and the contractor for loading and unloading has caused the accident, Tasnim News Agency reported.

All the 14 crew members were Indian, an Iranian official said.

The height of the ship from its bottom to its top is about 25 metres. Part of the ship is outside the water and the other part is below the sea level.

Iran to Sue US over Sanctions: President Rouhani

In a speech broadcast live on Monday, Rouhani said he had ordered the ministries of foreign affairs and justice “to file a legal case in Iranian courts against those in America who designed and imposed sanctions on Iran.”

“These sanctions amount to crime against humanity,” he said, adding if an Iranian court finds against US officials, Iran will pursue the case in international courts of justice.

Iran’s litigations against the US have already succeeded in international tribunals. In October, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered the US to exempt exports of humanitarian and civil aviation supplies to Iran.

“We were able to win in both the International Court of Justice in the Hague and the European courts, which means that we were able to legally defeat America, and of course, this trend should continue,” Rouhani said.

He said the enemies will never succeed in their attempts to weaken the Iranian nation despite having tried all in their power over the past 40 years.

The Iranian people, he said, has long resisted outside pressure and will keep up the fight until the enemy is defeated.

“The enemy made some attempts but never achieved what it desired even though sometimes” the pressure was too much, the president said.

Referring to US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement and his pledge to tighten economic pressure on Iran, Rouhani said the US was looking for a way back to Iran after the nation overthrew the Shah during the 1979 Revolution.

“What the US did was based on the idea that they could return to Iran if they could keep the sanctions and increase the pressure,” he said.

Rouhani said Washington thought that abandoning the nuclear deal would prompt Iran to also abandon the agreement and that it could eventually have all UN sanctions removed under the deal, reinstated.

“We ruined their plan; they didn’t expect us to act like this,” he said.

The US, Rouhani said, expected Europe to follow its lead in quitting the nuclear deal but except for a few countries, the world stood in solidarity with Iran.

“Let the world know that what America has done is not against Iran or nuclear technology; rather, it is against the well-being, environment, food, medicine and the lives of the Iranian people,” he said.

Rouhani touched on some economic problems in the country, saying their root causes had been identified and the government was taking necessary measures to address them.

“The thieves ambushed us, our progress briefly slowed down and things became a bit difficult,” he said.

“A superpower like the US, the Zionist regime (of Israel) and the region’s reactionary (regimes) all joined forces to bring the Iranian nation to its knees and take their 40-year revenge” on Iran, he said.

As an example, the president noted, while there were still major sanctions against Iran, the country was able to launch new phases of South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf.

On Sunday, Rouhani officially launched phases 13, 22, 23, and 24 of South Pars, the world’s largest gas field.

“Today is a very auspicious day for the Iranian nation, which has dealt strong blows to enemies, because they thought that by imposing sanctions, they would be able to stop all our plans and advances,” Rouhani said in Kangan.

Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh said Iran, which shares the South gas field Pars with Qatar, expects to operate 27 phases by next March.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum, Iran has invested $11 billion to complete the four phases and they will increase the natioanal gas production capacity by up to 112 million cubic meters per day.
