Trump Cancels ‘Imminent’ Attack on Iran, Says Not after War

A report by Reuters on Friday quoted an Iranian official as saying, “In his message, Trump said he was against any war with Iran and wanted to talk to Tehran about various issues … he gave a short period of time to get our response but Iran’s immediate response was that it is up to Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei to decide about this issue,” one of the officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Also a second official said, “We made it clear that the leader is against any talks, but the message will be conveyed to him to make a decision … However, we told the Omani official that any attack against Iran will have regional and international consequences.”

However, the spokesman for Iran’s Supreme National Security Council later denied receiving any message from the US.

The New York Times reported on Friday that President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for the IRGC’s downing of an intrusive American spy drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions.

As late as 7 pm, military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike, after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the president’s top national security officials and congressional leaders, according to multiple senior administration officials involved in or briefed on the deliberations.

Officials said the president had initially approved attacks on a handful of Iranian targets, like radar and missile batteries.

The operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off, a senior administration official said. Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down, the official said.

The retaliation plan was intended as a response to the shooting down of the unmanned, $130 million surveillance drone, which was struck Thursday morning by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, according to a senior administration official who was briefed on the military planning and spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential plans.

The strike was set to take place just before dawn Friday in Iran to minimize risk to the Iranian military and civilians.

But military officials received word a short time later that the strike was off, at least temporarily.

Mr. Trump’s national security advisers split about whether to respond militarily. Senior administration officials said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; John R. Bolton, the national security adviser; and Gina Haspel, the CIA director, had favored a military response. But top Pentagon officials cautioned that such an action could result in a spiraling escalation with risks for American forces in the region.

in his public appearance, Trump initially seemed to be looking for a way to avoid a potentially serious military crisis. Instead of directly accusing the leaders of Iran, Trump said an individual in Iran was responsible for making such a mistake.

Trump said the episode would have been far more serious if the aircraft had been a piloted vehicle, and not a drone. It made “a big, big difference” that an American pilot was not threatened, he told reporters.

Iran Not after War with US, Swiss Envoy Told

In a meeting with Swiss Ambassador Markus Leitner on Friday, Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister and the Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Department for the Americas Mohsen Baharvand delivered an official note regarding the recent encroachment of the US drone into the Iranian airspace to the Swiss diplomat and said the US government will be held accountable for the consequences of such provocative measures.

Baharvand also provided the Swiss ambassador with more details of the downing of the US drone including the geographical location of where it was targeted in the Iranian territory.

He also told Leitner that the remnants of the wreckage of the drone have been found in the Iranian waters, are now held by the Iranian armed forces and will be put on display in case of necessity.

Baharvand also called on the Swiss envoy to convey this message from Iran to the US that Tehran is not after a war with any country including the US but the Iranian armed forces will never put up with any aggressive move and will deal with it by giving a severe and immediate response.

“The armed Forces of Iran will show restraint as long as possible to preserve the security and tranquility of the sensitive region of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman but if the other side makes a provocative and unconsidered move, they will not hesitate to give a reciprocal response with unpredictable consequences detrimental to all parties involved,” he noted.

The Swiss ambassador, in turn, said he would immediately convey the message to Washington.

In the Thursday night conversation, Araqchi told Markus Leitner – whose country represents the US interests in the Islamic Republic – that  there was “indisputable” evidence that the drone had violated Iran’s airspace.

“Even some parts of the drone’s wreckage have been retrieved from Iran’s territorial waters,” Araqchi told the Swiss envoy.

This was not the first time the Americans were committing such an act, and that had happened a number of times before, Araqchi said, urging American forces to respect Iran’s aerial and maritime borders and fully abide by international regulations.

The Iranian diplomat reiterated that Iran does not seek a war and conflict in the Persian Gulf, warning the American forces against any unconsidered measure in the region.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran would not hesitate for a moment to decisively defend its territory against any aggression,” he added.

Leitner, in turn, said he would immediately convey Iran’s message to the US government.

The Swiss envoy was also asked to visit the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Friday morning to receive more details about the incident.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced earlier in the day that its mobile air defence system has shot down a US RQ-4 Global Hawk drone flying over the coastal province of Hormozgan in southern Iran.

Washington first denied the report but later on admitted that a US Navy MQ-4C Triton (a slightly modified RQ-4) had been shot down albeit in “international waters” near the Strait of Hormuz.

The drone was shot down using the Iranian air defence system “3 Khordad”, which can hit targets at altitudes as high as 88,000 feet.

Iran Releases First Footage of Downing US Spy Drone

The US Global Hawk (RQ-4) drone was shot down on Thursday morning in an area close to Kuhmobarak village in Iran’s Hormozgan province, near the Persian Gulf waters.

The IRGC later disclosed more information about the drone it brought down, including the aircraft’s itinerary and its unlawful and stealth maneuvering in Iran’s sky.

In a statement, the IRGC said the ‘Global Hawk’ spy drone took off from a US military base in south of the Persian Gulf at 19:44 GMT on Wednesday (00:14 am local time on Thursday), switched off all of its communication systems, and flew towards the port city of Chabahar in south-eastern Iran via the Strait of Hormuz in maximum stealth.

When flying back to the western part of the region, the unmanned plane violated the Iranian airspace near the Strait of Hormuz and began to spy on Iran and collect information, the statement added.

The IRGC Aerospace Force’s air defense unit shot down the intruding drone in Iran’s airspace at 23:35 GMT, it noted.

The doomed aircraft, an RQ-4C Global Hawk, is one of the world’s most advanced spy drones that costs more than $130 million to build.

The intruding drone was reportedly shot by Iran’s homegrown air defense missile system “3rd of Khordad”.

Downing of Spy Drone Clear Message to US: IRGC Commander

Arms Embargo Won’t Affect Iran’s Defence Power: Top General

Speaking at an event in Iran’s western Kordestan province, Major General Hossein Salami said the Islamic Republic will respond firmly to any intrusion.

“You heard today that in the early morning the IRGC’s Aerospace Force bravely downed an intruding American drone,” he said. “This is the manner in which the Iranian nation confronts its enemy.”

“The downing of the American drone conveyed a clear message and it was the fact that the defenders of Iran’s borders will give a crushing and finishing response to intrusions by any foreign entity,” he asserted.

The general noted that Iran considered its borders as its “red line” and said: “Any enemy that breaches these borders won’t go back [alive].”

“We declare that we don’t want to go into war with any country but we are fully prepared for war and today’s incident was a clear indication of this,” General Salami continued.

Earlier on Thursday, the IRGC announced that it had downed a US spy drone near the Strait of Hormuz, as it breached Iranian airspace over the coastal province of Hormuzagan.

An unnamed US military official confirmed that a US Navy MQ-4C Triton drone had been shot down in the region. However, the source claimed that the drone was flying in international airspace when it was hit with an Iranian surface-to-air missile.

In a Thursday statement, Mousavi said aggressors are to blame for any such violations.

“While expressing our strong protest at such acts of aggression and provocative moves, we announce that we firmly warn against any aggression and illegal entry into the country’s airspace by any foreign flying object, and any aggression against the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran and violation of its frontiers, and the entire responsibility for consequences of such actions fall upon the aggressors,” he said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) shot down a US spy drone in southern Iran early Thursday. The incident took place in Kooh Mobarak area of Hormozgan province. The US Central Command, however, has rejected the news, saying no American aircraft was operating in the Iranian airspace. Meanwhile, some media reports have quoted a US official as saying that a drone was downed in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. He said the drone was an MQ-4C Triton.

Triton can fly for over 24 hours at a time, at altitudes higher than 10 miles, with an operational range of 82-hundred nautical miles.

Iran Starts Exporting Two Nano Pharmaceuticals

“Sina Curcumin”, which is taken from turmeric based on nanotechnology, has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-tumor effects.

According to ISNA, it has now been distributed to drugstores in the country, and the registration process for the export of this drug is ongoing.

The target markets for this medicine are countries like Iraq, Syria and Oman, and talks are underway to export it to Pakistan too. The drug has also been exported to China.

In addition, the drug “Sina Ampholish”, which is the main substance of Amphotericin B, is used to treat topical sore or Leishmaniasis.

“Glucantime” is normally used to treat this disease, but as it must be injected, it has not been accepted by the patients. However, Sina Ampholish Gel has fixed this problem. This medicine is exported to Afghanistan. Tropical Sore is prevalent in tropical regions and is caused due to the bite of a mosquito called Leishmania.

The production of “Sina Doxosome” for the treatment of breast and ovarian cancer is another core achievement of the company. It also can be prescribed in the first stage of sarcoma. Export of this medicine is also on the agenda.

Iran Downs US’ Spy Drone in Persian Gulf: Report

The US Global Hawk (RQ-4) drone was shot down on Thursday morning in an area close to Kuhmobarak village in Iran’s Hormozgan province, near the Persian Gulf waters, Sepah News Agency reported.

The drone had reportedly trespassed into the Iranian territory when it was shot down.

The shoot-down of the spy drone was later confirmed by the IRGC Public Relations Department.

Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), said on the sidelines of a security summit in Moscow on Wednesday that for Iran its airspace was the “red line.”

“We have repeated time and again that we will use all in our power to defend the maritime and aerial borders of our homeland,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter which country’s aircraft have breached it,” he said. “We will always give the intruders a crushing response.”

Iran must file legal action at UN

Meanwhile, Chairman of Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh said Tehran must file legal action at the United Nations against the US for violating its airspace.

The lawmaker said flying the spy drone over Iran was an extension of America’s recent moves in sending warships to the region in the form of an apparent “war posture.”

US says drone was downed in international airspace

An unnamed American military official confirmed to the media that a US drone had been indeed targeted near Iran but claimed that the unmanned aircraft never entered Iranian airspace.

Locas Tomlinson, a Fox News correspondent, also quoted an American official as saying that the MQ-4C Triton drone (a slightly modified Global Hawk variant) was downed by an Iranian surface-to-air missile in the “international airspace” over the Strait of Hormuz.

‘Iran Launches Three Counterattacks against US Drones’

Macron’s Adviser in Iran for Talks on Regional Tensions

The senior French diplomat, Emmanuel Bonne, has traveled to the Islamic Republic on Wednesday.

“The diplomatic adviser did indeed travel to Iran on June 19…to hold high-level talks with the objective of contributing to a de-escalation of tensions in the region,” a French presidency official said, confirming information from two diplomatic sources.

Bonne has been based in Iran in the past, and is a Middle East expert, Reuters reported.

The visit follows reports that Britain, France and Germany are planning a new push to keep Iran in the 2015 nuclear deal.

Diplomats said the three EU parties to the JCPOA would intensify diplomacy in the coming days, including with talks among the E3 and EU political directors in Brussels on Thursday.

In comments on Wednesday morning, the president of Iran said Tehran’s legitimate decision to scale back commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal could be reversed, provided that the other parties fulfill their undertakings and meet a 60-day deadline that started on May 8.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion over the text of the 2015 nuclear deal.

The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation was hampered by the US policies and its eventual withdrawal from the deal.

On May 8, 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the nuclear accord. Afterwards, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.

However, the EU’s failure to ensure Iran’s economic interests forced Tehran to stop honoring certain commitments under JCPOA in May 2019.

For the first step, Iran has ceased to observe the limits on uranium enrichment and begun to produce an unlimited amount of heavy water at the Arak nuclear facility during the 60-day deadline.
