Iran Hails Successful Elections in Tunisia

In a statement on Tuesday, Mousavi offered congratulations to the nation and government of the brotherly and friendly country of Tunisia, and said the elections and the smooth transition of power in Tunisia indicate the reinforcement and strengthening of democracy and the major role of the people in this country.

He also pointed to the presidential run-off which is due to be held in coming days, and expressed hope that the second round would also be held successfully in the North African country.

The first round of presidential elections was held in Tunisia on 15 September 2019, the second direct vote for the presidency since the 2011 revolution.

The elections had originally been planned for 17 and 24 November, but were brought forward after the death of incumbent president Beji Caid Essebsi on 25 July to ensure that a new president would take office within 90 days, as required by the constitution.

As no candidate received a majority of the vote in the first round, a runoff will be held on 13 October between the top two candidates, the retired law professor Kaïs Saïed, and Nabil Karoui who is currently in jail.

Said and Karoui’s success in beating established political leaders including the prime minister, two former premiers and a former president, during the first round, was seen as a sharp rebuke to Tunisia’s ruling elite after years of economic discontent.

Last Tuesday, a court ruled that Karoui must stay in detention for now on suspicion of financial crimes that he denies.

The electoral commission has however warned that Karoui’s detention may violate his right to a fair hearing with voters, putting it at odds with Tunisia’s judiciary, which has repeatedly ruled that he must stay behind bars.

Iran Says Pullout of US Troops from Syria ‘Long Overdue’

In a statement on Tuesday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry denounced as “illegitimate” the presence of American troops in Syria, and said the US decision to end the occupation of Syrian territories and withdraw its forces from the Arab country was long overdue.

It also expressed hope for the establishment of peace and stability in Syria and the region following the recent move by the US.

The statement further noted that Iran is closely monitoring the worrying reports about the possibility of Turkish military forces entering the Syrian territories.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry believes such a move, in case of occurrence, would not only fail to address Turkey’s security concerns, but also will inflict heavy material and humanitarian damages, it said.

“Accordingly, the Islamic Republic of Iran is opposed to any possible military operation,” it added.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran stands ready to make immediate contacts with the Turkish and Syrian officials in order to address the existing concerns in a peaceful manner, and stresses that respect for Syria’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the Adana agreement would be the appropriate basis for the negotiations,” the statement noted.

Turkey started its military incursion into northern Syria on Monday night, after the US in a major shift in its policy gave the green light to Ankara to launch the operation against Washington’s long-time Kurdish allies in northern Syria.

In a phone conversation on Monday, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu assured his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif that Ankara’s military operation in northern Syria is a temporary one.

Zarif, in turn, expressed Iran’s opposition to Turkey’s military action, and said the Adana Agreement is the best approach for Syria and Turkey to address their concerns.

The Adana Interstate Agreement on Combating Terrorism was signed between Turkey and Syria on October 20, 1998. It clearly stated that the Damascus government would not allow any activities of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militant group on Syrian soil, and would block any terror activities that could threaten Turkey’s sovereignty.

Iran to Provide Neighbours with Lab Services

The manager of the Iran High-Tech Laboratory Network (LabsNet) of the country’s Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology says it is to provide access and facilitate the provision of laboratory services to neighbouring countries in a more regular and systematic way.

Reza Asadi-Fard noted that currently, laboratories in Iranian border cities are providing services to neighbours, but plans have been developed to provide them with services more systematically, using the existing capabilities of Iran High-Tech Laboratory Network.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review – 2019

According to Asadi-Fard, using the capabilities and services of other countries’ laboratories to enhance the country’s research potentials is the next cornerstone of the lab.

The goal of LabsNet is making connection with other countries especially Iran’s neighbours to share research and laboratory experiences and services. Its job includes providing laboratory services, interlaboratory comparisons, training, standardization and other international affairs.

Iran Says US’ Unilateralism Imperils Global Trade System

“The United States’ unilateral, aggressive, illegal and illegitimate actions have unprecedentedly increased in the face of international silence and threatens the foundations of multilateralism,’’ the Iranian envoy said in a Monday speech at the UN General Assembly.

“One cannot ignore the fact that commitment for multilateral cooperation as the basis of the fulfilment of obligations and implementation of international agreements is facing unprecedented and growing pressure,” he added.

He noted a report by the UN secretary general about the extent to which development objectives have been achieved shows a little progress in that regard and suggests the most vulnerable countries still experience the most pressure.

He said one of the reasons behind the current unpleasant trend is that developed countries have not made good on their commitments in domains related to financing, the transfer of technology and creating potential in developing nations.

Funding development is facing an unprecedented challenge and the numerous blows dealt to unilateralism have caused problems for development and its financing.

“Policies based on sanctions have made the multilateral financial and trade system very inefficient, and now it falls upon the international community to guarantee that the funding of development will not be hijacked by certain countries by adopting unilateral aggressive actions,” he added.

“International trade remains the main driving force behind growth, welfare and development, and every independent country is entitled to be able to part of the multilateral international trade system, a system which needs to be global and act in a transparent, predictable and open manner based on law and regulations without being influenced by political considerations,” he added.

“The responsibility of the international community becomes more obvious when illegal unilateralism as well as unfair and illegitimate economic and political sanctions is jeopardizing the life of a nation and targeting it with economic terrorism,” he added.

“It is an innate responsibility of the international community to adopt a resolute decision and take firm steps based on political commitments to take action to fully eliminate such illegal moves and create a proper atmosphere at all levels for the fair and balanced development of all countries,” he said.

“Despite all sanctions and restrictions imposed on it, the Islamic Republic of Iran is set to bring a future full of hope and dignity and prosperity for the Iranian nation and help realize a world devoid of poverty, hunger, ignorance, illness and climate challenges,” he said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Iran’s UN ambassador touched upon climate change and the adverse effects of the global challenge.

“Climate change is one of the most important challenges of our time, and the UN convention on climate change has specified the duties and responsibilities of countries in order to tackle this challenge,” he noted.

He said the long-term objectives set forth in the convention will be achieved only when developed countries accept their responsibilities toward developing nations.

“It should not be forgotten that under international climate documents, developed countries are obliged to take specific actions to transfer technology and provide enough and timely funding in that regard,” he added.

Tehran to Sue Washington over Violation of JCPOA

Laya Joneydi said the legal department of the government has called on the country’s macroeconomic departments to assess the damages caused by the JCPOA violations to take legal action against the US and remedy it.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has raised the issue of the US’ re-imposition of cruel sanctions despite an agreement before the International Court of Justice in The Hague and an interim order was issued in favour of Iran,” she told ICANA.

“According to the legal department of the government, Tehran is seeking compensation for damages; therefore, we are working to document all the damages and provide the conditions for compensation.”

US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear accord in May 2018 and re-imposed the sanctions that had been lifted under the nuclear deal. He also ordered new sanctions. In May, he introduced a total ban on Iran’s oil exports.

On the first anniversary of the US withdrawal from the deal, Tehran started the reduction of its commitments based on Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, and set a deadline for Europeans to make up for the US breaches.

Tehran says it cannot remain committed while the other parties fail to stick to their commitments under the agreement.

US Maximum Pressure on Iran Ends in Failure: VP

COVID-19 Punishes Those Who Sanctioned Iran’s Oil: First VP

In comments at the inauguration of a water supply project in Birjand on Monday, Jahangiri highlighted the failure of US attempts to maximize pressures on Iran by imposing cruel sanctions.

“The Americans thought that the pressures would push the country’s economy and the Islamic Republic’s establishment towards dissolution, but today, we announce proudly that the plot of Americans has ended in failure,” the vice president added, hailing the Iranian people and government’s endeavors.

He also noted that the administration would carry out major projects in various sectors, such as the oil industry, agriculture, energy, metal industry and mines, as well as road construction and urban development, in order to address the economic woes and improve the livelihood of people.

In remarks last week, Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei highlighted the defeat of the US policy of maximum pressure on Iran, saying the Americans had plans to bring Iran to its knees by maximizing the economic pressures, but they ran into trouble themselves.

“The (US policy of) maximum pressure has failed up to this moment, and I announce firmly that they (Americans) will fail in their attempt for such maximum pressure forever,” Ayatollah Khamenei underlined.

Zarif Objects to Turkish Military Action in Syria

In a telephone conversation on Monday night, Zarif and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the latest developments in northeastern Syria.

In the phone call, Cavusoglu emphasized the need to respect Syria’s territorial integrity, saying Turkey’s operation in northern parts of Syria would be temporary.

In turn, Foreign Minister Zarif voiced opposition to military action and urged respect for Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

The top Iranian diplomat also stressed the need for the fight against terrorism and for the establishment of stability and security in Syria, describing the Adana agreement as the best approach for Syria and Turkey and for addressing their concerns.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that Turkey’s Army was ready to launch operations against Kurdish fighters in Syria at any moment following the US announcement.

Iran Condemns US Congressional Bill on Hong Kong

In a statement on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Seyyed Abbas Mousavi denounced the “cheeky” bill the US Congress’ committee on foreign affairs has approved on democracy and human rights in Hong Kong.

“This was not the first move by the US’ regime and its Congress in such cases. The Islamic Republic of Iran deems such measures a clear example of interference in the internal affairs of the (other) countries and condemns it,” he deplored.

“The international law strongly prohibits meddling in the internal affairs of countries. Sadly, the repetition of such conduct by the US regime has turned into an instrument for destabilizing the countries,” Mousavi added.

“The right to protest is a right of citizens that could be exercised without any foreign meddling and within the framework of law and public order,” the spokesperson concluded.

China’s Foreign Ministry has already sent a note of protest to the US following approval of the congressional bill, urging the American lawmakers to immediately drop it.

The US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations approved the legislation on human rights and democracy in Hong Kong on September 25. The document will require that US president annually provide assessments on situation in Hong Kong to the Congress, as well as introduce sanctions against people the White House deems responsible for violating rights of activists in this special administrative region of China.

Arbaeen Pilgrimage Unaffected by Events in Iraq: Spokesman

In an interview with IRIB on Monday, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said the Iraqi government and nation will weather the current situation and resolve their internal problems through unity and cooperation.

“The Iraqi government and nation have a rich history, are mature and grown-up, and have gone through many crises in this period, either under the American occupation or afterwards,” the Iranian spokesman added.

Hailing Iraqis for their success to deal with the previous crises with wisdom and consensus among the political and religious figures, Mousavi advised the opportunistic parties not to pin hopes on the recent unrest in Iraq.

“It is an internal issue of Iraq, and will be settled soon by the Iraqi government and nation and by all groups, all individuals, characters, religious figures and Marja’s and influential people inside Iraq itself,” he noted.

Mousavi further said this year’s Arbaeen processions and mourning ceremonies “will held more magnificently than the previous years”, regardless of the recent developments in Iraq.

The spokesman underlined that the Shiite Muslims from Iran, Iraq, and all parts of the world are going to join the mass gathering of lovers of Imam Hussein (PBUH) in this year’s Arbaeen season.

On Saturday, commander of the Iranian Police said the number of Iranian pilgrims traveling to Iraq for Arbaeen has risen by 80 percent compared to the previous year.

Arbaeen, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shiite Imam.
