Young Man Dedicates Himself to Taking Care of Handicapped Dog (18)

Saeed, a 30-year-old man from Kermanshah in western Iran, has adopted Brown. The dog was hit by a car in a highway in Tehran four years ago, but was saved with the help of animal supporters. However, it was disabled after the amputation of its leg.

As a stray dog, Brown had a hard time before being adopted by Saeed and taken to Kermanshah. As he lives in an apartment, Saeed has to keep Brown in his friend’s villa. He has accepted the hard conditions of caring for a disabled dog: he feeds Brown twice a day and cleans its cage.

The dog, on the other hand, relies on Saeed and doesn’t allow others to approach the cage, nor it accepts being fed by them.

What follows are IRNA’s photos of Brown’s life:

Your Guide to Tax Returns on Cryptocurrency

When you make a transaction using a cryptocurrency on a blockchain network, the transaction is verified by nodes in the network that generate a cryptographical key to validate the transaction. Once a transaction is unanimously authenticated by all the nodes in a network it is added to a block, this block is added to a chain of transactions that are immutably linked to one another through strong cryptography. The blockchain shows the entire transaction history related to that currency.

Legality of cryptocurrencies in India

Over the past few years, India has been increasingly using technology like blockchain to fuel transactions. The RBI has noticed these developments and has reacted quite favorably to the adoption of these technologies. While India is moving towards a digital or cashless economy, cryptocurrencies still remain outliers.

Your Guide to Tax Returns on CryptocurrencyIn 2013 the RBI took notice of the increasing use of cryptocurrencies in India and cautioned holders, traders, and users against the use of such virtual currencies. Other regulators like Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department were swift to take action and shut down businesses associated with cryptocurrency. In light of these developments, most entities dealing with cryptocurrencies stopped business operations from 2017 onwards. The RBI also prohibited entities regulated by it to transact in cryptocurrency. Even though the RBI has taken quite a firm stance against cryptocurrencies in India, it has supported the use of blockchain technology and distributed ledger technology in India and has also supported the development of a national digital currency, this is evidenced in the two reports from the RBI in 2017 and 2019.

After the budget speech in 2018, the government created an Inter-ministerial Council which included the RBI to examine

  • The status of cryptocurrencies in India and globally.
  • The existing regulatory structures in place for cryptocurrencies globally.
  • How to tackle issues related to consumer protection and money laundering.

Taxes on cryptocurrencies

Presently, in India, there is a total ban on holding, selling, dealing in, mining, generating, issuing, transferring, using or disposing of cryptocurrency. So information on cryptocurrency taxes is purely speculative. There are three main instances that can produce a taxable income from cryptocurrency transactions:

  • Transfer of cryptocurrency to fiat currency
  • Crypto-mining
  • Receiving payment in cryptocurrencies

Cryptocurrency exchanged for fiat currency

When a cryptocurrency is exchanged for a fiat currency, the price differential between the buying price of the cryptocurrency and selling price will be considered taxable income. The duration for which the cryptocurrency is held will determine the head under which it will be taxed.

Cryptocurrency held longer than 36 months are considered long-term capital assets, and therefore, any income arising from the sale of these assets will be taxed at a flat rate of 20% under the head Long-Term Capital Gains. Income arising from the sale of cryptocurrencies held for periods of less than 36 months or traded regularly will be considered a business income and will be taxed according to the appropriate tax slab.

Crypto-Mining

Even though crypto-mining is a capital intensive activity that consumes a lot of electricity and requires expensive hardware. The cryptocurrency generated as a result of mining is self-generated, and therefore, the cost of acquisition cannot be determined.

Your Guide to Tax Returns on CryptocurrencyEven though Section 55 of the Income Tax Act, 1961 dictates the calculation required to be performed in case of self-generating assets, it does not include crypto-mining. Therefore, it is not clear how crypto-mining will be taxed under future regulations.

Receiving payment in cryptocurrencies

Many businesses use cryptocurrencies as a means to receive payments. Any payments received by a business for goods or services through cryptocurrencies will be considered a business income and will be taxed appropriately. Tax in such a case will be levied under the head of Profits or Gains from a business.

Cryptocurrencies could be the future of currency, and even though it is not clear as to how they will be taxed, it is a good idea to keep up to date with the latest developments when it comes to these digital assets.

Zarif to EU: Show Me Just One JCPOA Commitment You’ve Upheld!

Zarif to EU Show Me Just One JCPOA Commitment You’ve Upheld!

“To my EU/E3 Colleagues 1. ‘Fully upheld commitments under JCPOA’ YOU? Really? Just show ONE that you’ve upheld in the last 18 months,” Zarif said in a tweet on Tuesday.

“2. Iran triggered – and exhausted – dispute resolution mechanism while you were procrastinating. We’re now using Paragraph 36 remedies. Look at my 6/11/18 letter,” he went on to say.

His harsh reaction came after the three European countries and the European Union said they were “extremely concerned” by Iran’s decision to restart nuclear activities at one of its key sites.

“The Foreign Ministers of France, Germany and the United Kingdom and the High Representative of the European Union are extremely concerned by the latest announcements that Iran is restarting uranium enrichment activities at the Fordow facility, as confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in its November 11 report,” they said in a joint statement, AFP reported.

“We urge Iran to reverse all measures inconsistent with the JCPOA,” it added.

The three countries warned Tehran they might trigger a dispute settlement mechanism prescribed by the deal. Under the terms agreed in 2015, the move would start a 30-day deadline for the signatories to resolve the problem. If the issue remains unsolved, it could be directed to the UN Security Council and eventually trigger the “snapback” of sanctions lifted under the deal.

“We affirm our readiness to consider all mechanisms in the (nuclear deal) including the dispute resolution mechanism, to resolve the issues,” the European states said.

Iran’s First Woman Airport Chief Talks of Her Job’s Ups & Downs

Iran’s First Woman Airport Manager Talks of Her Job’s Ups & Downs (3)

Before being appointed as the Abadan Airport Manager, Sohrabi was an employee full of hopes and motivations, and of course, a passion for proving women’s competencies in their careers.

She is now not only the first female airport manager in Iran, but as she herself puts it, the first female executive in the Mideast.

Here are excerpts of Sohrabi’s remarks in a recent interview with Shahrvand newspaper:

I started my job at the airport in 2004. I had different responsibilities. For example, I was data manager for a while and also in charge of IT and education centre. I was the head of the General Department for six years and then became the Deputy Director General of the Ahwaz Airport.

Iran’s First Woman Airport Chief Talks of Her Job’s Ups & DownsFrom my early days in this job, I found out that the chart is completely patriarchal. In the organisation, all managers were men, and we had no such thing as female executives. It became a question to me why women were not in managerial positions. That motivated me to move purposefully. I continued my education and at the same time did my duties. I really wanted to take up the post someday. I wanted to prove that women can work hard. I progressed step by step. During my time as a deputy, I slept about 3 to 4 hours a day, while the chores were also part of my personal life. As much as I could, I tried to accomplish the mission of women.

Of course there were many obstacles. Many gentlemen still believe that women should not be appointed as airport managers, because they are not capable of managing the crisis. I think it’s still too early to respond to those who are opposed to women’s managerial posts. Time will tell everything. However, I hope we will never see a crisis in the country.

Since my appointment to this post, people’s feedback has been great. After I was selected as the manager of Abadan Airport, the men of Khuzestan Arab tribes came to the airport to congratulate me. It was really interesting to me. It’s been two months and people are still coming to see me and congratulate me.

Of course my work is very sensitive and full of crises, and some believe that women are not suitable for crisis management but it is not true. For example, a few days ago, there was an accident where we had to transport 70 injured people from Abadan Airport to Shiraz Airport. I was on the runway for eight hours to get all the injured and their companions on board. The situation was very terrible, but I didn’t even let one of their companions get stranded. Up until the last moment when the plane was ready to fly I was with the injured and tried to calm them down. This is not the job of the airport manager, but every manager has his or her own approach, and ultimately the type of management and capabilities are important.

I think you have to have emotional intelligence and you can’t be an ordinary person. You have to be ready to take risks as well; something which is partly intrinsic. I love risk taking and excitement. So I went after it and gave it a try.

The airport is not an ordinary place and in such circumstances my appointment was a risk. So this is a remarkable event in Iran and the Middle East. So far, we haven’t had a female manager in any airport in the Middle East. I believe in trusting the youths. My plan for the future is to educate young executives and support them.

Iranian Delegation in China to Boost Sci-Tech Ties

Iranian Delegation in China to Boost Sci-Tech Ties

Parviz Karami, an advisor to Sattari said Iran’s Vice President for Science and Technology has travelled to China upon an official invitation by the Chinese Minister of Science and is accompanied by the executives of the knowledge-based, technology and creative companies to expand their interactions with Chinese counterparts.

“The Vice President for Science and Technology will meet with Chinese scientific and technological officials on this trip,” added Karami.

“These companies are active in fields like Information technology, stem cells, industrial machinery and equipment, advanced materials and health.”

He also added that the delegation will attend two technology and business meetings in Shanghai and Shenzhen to find Chinese investors and business partner to expand their knowledge-based activities.

According to him, the first meeting of knowledge-based companies will be held in Shanghai on November 11 and the second on November 13 in Shenzhen.

In addition to being the most populous city of the People’s Republic of China and the world, Shanghai is also a global economic hub, and considered to be the most populous container port in the world.

Shenzhen is also the hub of China’s information technology, communications and electronics. Therefore, about 40% of Iranian companies of this delegation are knowledge-based and working in the fields of IT, and electronics.

In another part of the trip, Iran’s high-ranking scientific, technology and science delegation will visit the 21st China International High-tech Fair.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review – 2019

Out of the 70 knowledge-based companies that accompany Sattari, 10 technological companies are present at the fifth pavilion of the Islamic Republic of Iran to exhibit their achievements, stated Karami.

“Iran’s Vice President for Science and Technology will also deliver a speech at the opening of the event.”

The 21st China International High-tech Fair will be held in Shenzhen. It is the largest science and technology exhibition to bring together participants, achievements and innovations in the fields of new energy, new generation of information technology, biotech and environmental protection.

This event has turned into one of the most important technology events in the world in recent years and plays an important role in boosting scientific cooperation and exchanges between countries.

Visiting Suzhou Industrial Park

Karami also added that the Iranian delegation will go to Suzhou to visit the Industrial Park of the city on Tuesday November 22. Suzhou Industrial Park, one of the major technological advances in the country, started its job with the participation of Singapore 17 years ago. The park is comprised of numerous technology areas such as nanotechnology, biotech and ICT.

The Iranian delegation also visits the Iranian export base and Iranian knowledge-based companies in the park, whose infrastructure were created with the support of the Vice Presidency of Science and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Karami said the purpose of the trip is to help expand Iran’s knowledge, technology and creative exports to China and to create fields of technology exchanges at the corporate level on both sides, adding that several cooperation agreements would also be signed between the two countries.

Back in August, Head of the International Liaison Department of the Communist Party of China, Song Tao, travelled to Iran along with a delegation of science and technology activists. During that visit, he met with Iran’s Vice President for Science and Technology, Sorena Sattari.

He said during the trip that “I realised Iran was not only an exporter of oil and gas, but also an advanced country in science and technology. Despite international developments and challenges, China’s will to expand ties with Iran has not changed, and we welcome further development of relations with Iran under the current circumstances.”

The Iranian delegation has other plans to develop engagement with the host country, which will be announced in detail later on.
