The French city of Nice became the scene of a deadly knife attack on Thursday, in which three people, including a woman, were killed. Paris has described the incident as an “Islamic terrorist attack”.

“We strongly condemn today’s terrorist attack in Nice,” Zarif said in a Thursday night post on his Twitter account.

“This escalating vicious cycle — hate speech, provocations and violence — must be replaced by reason and sanity,” the Iranian top diplomat said.

“We should recognize that radicalism only breeds more radicalism, and peace cannot be achieved with ugly provocations,” he added.

Zarif was apparently referring to the recent provocative anti-Islam comments by French President Emmanuel Macron, which has outraged Muslim people across the world.

Last Wednesday, Macron supported a French teacher’s displaying of cartoons insulting Prophet Muhammad in his class. “France will never renounce caricatures,” Macron declared, defending the teacher for “promoting freedom.”

The teacher, Samuel Paty, was murdered by an 18-year-old Chechen assailant. Commenting on the attack, Macron described Islam as a religion “in crisis” worldwide, trying to suggest that the assailant had been motivated to kill the teacher by the faith rather than radicalism.

Macron insisted on his position again on Sunday by tweeting, “We will not give in, ever.” The Leader called the French statesman’s insolence a “stupid act” that served to affront the reason of the very people, who have voted him to power.

Iran’s Initiative for Karabakh Dispute Opens Way to Peace: Diplomat

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Armenia’s capital of Yerevan on Thursday evening, Araqchi commented on the results of his visits to the Republic of Azerbaijan and Russia to promote the Islamic Republic’s initiative to end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“We held very intensive and fruitful talks in Baku and Moscow. We are going to negotiate with the Armenian officials as well to find a solution for peace,” he said.

“This is a quite delicate time, as a decision must be made immediately about establishment of peace and a way must be opened to peace,” Araqchi added.

“It’s a pity that the death toll (in Nagorno-Karabakh war) is rising. We believe that the way for peace must be paved as soon as possible, and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s proposal could open that way,” the deputy minister noted.

“Iran is a neighbour of both the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia. Nationals from the both countries live in Iran in peace and calm with the Iranian citizens. Our stance has been always balanced and moderate,” he stated.

Iran is committed to a series of international principles amid the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis, Araqchi stressed, adding, “Iran’s goodwill and capacities could be employed in the path to peace, particularly a sustainable peace.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s initiative is aimed at (creating) sustainable peace in the region,” he emphasized, stressing that Iran has the necessary capacities for ensuring peace in cooperation with the other countries.

Araqchi has travelled to Armenia after visiting Baku and Moscow. He is going to pay a visit to Turkey afterwards.

Iran’s Envoy Discusses Karabakh Conflict with Kremlin Officials

In a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister for Central Asia and Caucasus Affairs Andrei Rudenko, the Iranian envoy explained to him Iran’s plan to resolve differences between the Azerbaijan Republic and Armenia.

“Iran’s plan has been drawn up based on humanitarian principles and taking into account the demands of the warring sides,” he said.

Upon arrival in Moscow, Araqchi told reporters that the Minsk group created [in 1992] by the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), (now Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)), failed to resolve divisions between Azerbaijan and Armenia in 30 years.

“Now, the Islamic Republic of Iran, with its initiative, seeks to put an end to differences between Baku and Yerevan through regional cooperation. Of course, we have a tough task ahead to achieve this objective,” he said.

He said Iran seeks to settle the crisis through a regional solution in order to establish lasting peace.

“Interference is made by countries from outside the region which wouldn’t like to see peace take hold in this region,” he added.

Araqchi’s trip, which has already taken him to Baku and Moscow, will end with his trips to Yerevan and Ankara later on Thursday, October 29, 2020.
