Senior Iranian Cleric Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi Dies at 86

Mesbah Yazdi was a prominent cleric, philosopher and conservative political theorist who served as the spiritual leader of the Front of Islamic Revolution Stability.

He was a member of the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for choosing the Supreme Leader. He had been called ‘the most conservative’ and the most ‘powerful’ clerical oligarch in Iran’s leading centre of religious learning, the city of Qom.

In Qom, from 1952 to 1960, he participated in the courses taught by Imam Khomeini and Allamah Tabataba’i.

Mesbah Yazdi advocated Islamic philosophy and in particular Mulla Sadra’s transcendent school of philosophy (Hikmat-e Muta`aliya). He believed Iranians are moving away from religion and values of Islamic revolution and opposed democratic rule of western country and the west-oriented reform movement.

“Hoping that in 2021 all human beings around the world would have much better days to achieve equality, peace, and health regardless of nationality, religion, and gender,” he added.

Iran Writes to Security Council to Warn about US Adventurism in Persian Gulf

The Iranian mission issued a stern warning in a letter to the UN Security Council on Thursday and said the US has ramped up its military presence and activities in Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman in recent weeks.

“In addition to sending advanced and highly sophisticated weapons to the region over the past few weeks, the United States has also carried out some provocative military actions, including the deployment of a number of its long-range strategic bombers in the Persian Gulf in recent days,” the mission said in the letter.

“Such belligerent moves, if left unchecked, could escalate tensions to alarming levels, and it is clear that the United States will be fully responsible for the entire consequences,” it added.

The letter underlined Iran’s determination to protect its people and to defend its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity and noted that the Islamic Republic’s resolve to respond decisively to any threat or use of force against the country should not be underestimated.

The mission’s letter to the Security Council echoed earlier remarks by Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who said Iran does not seek war but will “openly and directly” defend its people and security as well as its vital interests.

On Wednesday, two nuclear-capable American B-52 bombers flew over the Persian Gulf after nonstop flights to the region from their US-based hangars. It was the third time in six weeks that American bombers were conducting long-range flights off the Iranian coast.

The latest deployments came after the US Navy announced the arrival of a nuclear-powered submarine in the Persian Gulf last week. The USS Georgia passed the Strait of Hormuz accompanied by two American warships, making it the first missile-loaded submarine of its kind to enter the Persian Gulf in eight years.

The region has witnessed escalating tensions since Trump accused Iran of playing a role in the attacks on the US embassy in Iraq late last month, threatening retaliation.

Moreover, the outgoing US president, as political analysts maintain, would barely choose not to welcome the eruption of a limited conflict with Iran as a final recourse to maintain its grip on power at a time that political and electoral procedure has denied him a second term in office after a crushing defeat to his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, in the November 3 election.

Most importantly, the US’s provocative moves in the Persian Gulf region come as Iranians and Iraqis are preparing to mark the first anniversary of the martyrdom of their popular commanders, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who were assassinated in a US drone strike in Baghdad Airport on January 3, last year.

The strike, which was directly ordered by Trump, triggered a strong anti-American backlash across the region, leading to growing calls for the US military to end its presence in the Middle East.

Iran unleashed a barrage of missiles on a US military base in Iraq on January 8 as part of its revenge for the assassination. US positions in Iraq have since been targeted several times.

Recently, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said revenge for the Iranian general was certain and would be exacted at the right time.

Iran has also issued an arrest warrant and asked Interpol for help in detaining the US president, who ordered the assassination, and several other US military and political leaders behind the strike.

US responsible for consequences of warmongering moves: Zarif

Meanwhile, the Iranian foreign minister pointed to the “US’s acts of mischief” in the region during a phone conversation with his Kuwaiti counterpart on Friday and stressed that Washington would be responsible for the consequences of any possible adventurism.

The head of Iran’s diplomatic apparatus also told Ahmad Nasser al-Mohammad Al Sabah that the Islamic Republic believes in comprehensive stability and security in the region away from any foreign interference.

The two top diplomats also exchanged views on bilateral relations and regional developments.

During the phone call, the Iranian foreign minister elaborated on the Islamic Republic’s views regarding the establishment of comprehensive stability and security, without foreign interference and free from any tensions.

“I saw it in the news that the Americans are on standby for the fear of (Iran’s) revenge, and have flown two B-52 bombers over the Persian Gulf for show,” Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan tweeted Thursday.

“All their military bases in the region are within the range of our missiles,” he said.

He also advised “those fired from the White House” not to “turn New Year into a tragedy for Americans.”

His comments came after the United States flew strategic bombers over the Persian Gulf on December 30, 2020 for the second time this month, fueling tensions in an already volatile region.

People Inside US May Avenge Soleimani’s Killing: Top General

Addressing a Friday ceremony to mark the first anniversary of General Soleimani’s assassination, General Qa’ani said “it is possible that some people inside your home (the US) would respond to your crime.”

He said after what the US did, they may find people all around the world who would be ready to take vengeance.

Qa’ani said the enemies of the Islamic Republic sought to target General Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis for thirty years, and finally the “filthiest man” was tempted by the Israeli regime and Saudi Arabia and made such an “unwise” move.

“The entire world will definitely condemn you. Those who committed this crime must know that all around the world, you may find a brave man who is ready to punish the cowards who did that,” he added.

General Soleimani, deputy commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and a number of their comrades were killed in a January drone attack, ordered by US President Donald Trump, near Baghdad International Airport.

In his Friday remarks, General Qa’ani stressed that the US mischievous acts in the region will not change the Resistance Front’s path.

Earlier in the day, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had warned about the US “acts of mischief” in a phone conversation with the Kuwaiti foreign minister.

Intelligence from Iraq Show US Seeking Pretext for War: Iran

Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a tweet that “intelligence from Iraq indicate plot to FABRICATE pretext for war.”

“Iran doesn’t seek war but will OPENLY and DIRECTLY defend its people, security and vital interests,” the foreign minister added.

Zarif also lashed out at US President Donald Trump for sending military aircraft to the Persian Gulf region and the Middle East.

“Instead of fighting COVID in US, Trump and cohorts waste billions to fly B52s and send armadas to OUR region,” the top diplomat added.

The United States flew strategic bombers over the Persian Gulf on December 30, 2020 for the second time this month, fueling tensions in an already volatile region.

Iran Condemns Yemen Airport Blasts

In a statement on Thursday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said, “Continued foreign aggression and occupation of Yemeni soil are the key contributors to instability as well as a lack of order and enforcement of law, and have jeopardized Yemen’s territorial integrity.”

“Such acts of violence and the killing of civilians are the result of the mentality of aggressors and occupiers of Yemen, who, in the name of a self-styled coalition, have destroyed the whole of Yemen, and, with their bellicose and secessionist views, have perpetuated the most heinous human crisis in Yemen,” he added.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the aggressors’ acts of aggression and war, and stresses a political solution to the crisis, and once again asks all parties to end the futile conflict by returning to political negotiations,” Khatibzadeh underlined.

Blasts struck an airport in Aden on December 30, 2020, after a plane carrying a self-proclaimed government backed by Saudi Arabia landed from Riyadh.

“At least two explosions were heard as the cabinet members were leaving the aircraft,” according to media reports.

A local security source said three mortar shells had landed on the airport’s hall. Sporadic gunfire was also heard.

The blasts left at least 10 people dead and dozens more injured.

Yemen’s self-proclaimed information minister Moammar Al-Eryani said on Twitter that all the members of the Saudi-backed cabinet were “fine”.
