Iran to Reverse Its Remedial Measures Once US Bans Lifted: Zarif

“US acknowledged Pompeo’s claims re Res. 2231 had no legal validity. We agree,” Zarif tweeted on Thursday night, referring to the US administration’s decision to withdraw the Trump government’s bid to return all UN sanctions on Iran.

“In compliance with 2231: US unconditionally and effectively lift all sanctions imposed, re-imposed or re-labelled by Trump. We will then immediately reverse all remedial measures. Simple: Commit, Act, Meet,” he noted.

In a separate tweet, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh referred to the US’ announcement that it would accept the EU’s invitation to a meeting of Iran and the P5+1, and said because of US withdrawal from JCPOA, there is NO P5+1 anymore.

“It is now ONLY Iran and P4+1. Remember, Trump left the room and tried to blow it up,” he noted.

“Gestures are fine. But to revive P5+1, US must Act: LIFT sanctions. We WILL respond.”

Khatibzadeh also echoed Zarif’s sequence of act by saying, “Here is the key sequence: Commit, Act, Meet.”

“The EU foreign policy chief, as the coordinator of the JCPOA, should play a better role in planning the steps,” he noted.

President Rouhani stressed the need to combat terrorism and extremism as two important problems in the region and the world, noting, “We are ready to work with the European Union to combat terrorism and extremism, and we welcome regional interaction and cooperation in this regard.”

The President also referred to the problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic for countries in the world and expressed hope that the problem would be resolved in the near future.

“Resolving this problem requires a comprehensive and global effort, and countries can share their successful experiences in fighting coronavirus to help solve this global problem,” he said.

Rouhani concluded his remarks by referring to the high-level talks between Iran and the European Union in various fields, including the fight against drug trafficking, environment, health, tourism and transportation, and welcomed the continuation of talks with the European Commission for developing cooperation.

In turn, the President of the European Council referred to Europe’s position in support of the JCPOA after the US unilateral withdrawal, and stressed the need to maintain the JCPOA as an international agreement and its full implementation by all parties.

Charles Michel added, “Given the new conditions in the international arena and the change of government in the United States, we must seize the opportunity to maintain and fully implement the JCPOA by all parties, and the European Union will play its role in this regard.”

Referring to the problems created for Iran due to US economic sanctions, the President of the European Council stressed, “It is natural that Iran should enjoy the economic benefits of the JCPOA.”

US to Suffer Humiliating Defeat This Weekend: Rouhani

President Hassan Rouhani described Trump as an “insane” ruler who could not force Iranians into submission.

“We wouldn’t have thought that a lunatic would come to power in the United States and would wage a war, unprecedented in history, against the great Iranian nation,” he said.

“He was insane because he thought he would force Iranian people into submission by putting them under pressure,” the president added.

“Now, American people have realized that he was mistaken, and so has the current US administration. We hope these mistakes are compensated for as soon as possible, and the new US administration will submit to the law, regulations and UN Security Council Resolution 2231,” he noted.

“Submission to law is not a problem. They shouldn’t be ashamed of that. What is bad is submission to force. But submission to law is something good and one should always give in to law,” he said.

President Rouhani also rejected allegations that Tehran is pressuring Washington into doing what it wants.

“There are propaganda campaigns claiming Iran has adopted measures to put the US under pressure. That’s not true,” he explained.

“We are not asking the US to do something illegal. We want it to obey the law,” said Rouhani.

“All governments have a human and political responsibility to implement and respect international regulations, international commitments, international accords. Therefore, we hope they will return to the law, so that we will be able to conduct our interactions and dealings in the world under better circumstances, especially in the trade sector,” he said.
