Iran Rebukes Saudi Arabia ahead of OPEC Meeting

“Naturally, if a country wants to produce at full capacity, there will be no balance in the market,” Deputy Petroleum Minister for Trade and International Affairs Amir Hossein Zamaninia said late Saturday.

The official did not name a country, but his comments were apparently directed at Saudi Arabia which recently backed out of an agreement with Russia and other countries to freeze crude production.

Riyadh has been insisting that all countries join the freeze initiative, singling out Iran which has been ramping up production to redeem its lost market share after the lifting of Western sanctions.

Zamaninia stressed that Iran is ready for cooperation but that it has to return to former production levels first. “Iran can cooperate in this regard when it returns to the (market) share before the sanctions.”

Reviving Quota System

He said OPEC countries need to find a way to revive the quota system which Saudi Arabia scuppered in December 2011 and introduced an output ceiling of 30 million barrels per day (bpd).

His remarks to reporters came after Algerian Energy Minister Nouredine Bouterfa met with Iran’s Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zanganeh in Tehran. Bouterfa has travelled to Iran ahead of an OPEC meeting on the sidelines of the International Energy Forum (IEF), which groups producers and consumers, in Algeria on Sept. 26-28.

Zamaninia said 90% of Algeria’s budget depends on oil and gas revenues, but that lower prices have extremely put the North African country’s finances under strain.

He said Bouterfa had made some proposals to strike a balance in the oil market in order to prop up prices in a reasonable way.

Speaking to reporters after his meeting with Zanganeh, the Algerian energy minister said a crude oil price of $50 per barrel is “not acceptable.”

“OPEC members are trying to reach a price of $50 to $60 per barrel and we have made a request for reaching consensus on a price and coordination among OPEC members in this regard,” Bouterfa said.

The Algerian minister said conditions were ready for reaching consensus on a price in the next OPEC meeting which all members will attend and the outcome will be “positive.”

Bouterfa said Iran’s participation in the next meeting was important even as he did not say whether the Islamic Republic would accept other members’ views about production and prices.

“This depends on Iran’s view. How much consensus would be there, I cannot answer this question and you must ask this from Iranian officials,” he told reporters.

Putin’s Compromise on Iran

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying that a potential oil output freeze deal among oil-exporting countries should involve some compromise on Iran’s production levels.

“I think that from the point of view of economic expediency and logic, it would be right to find some sort of compromise” on the Iranian output level, Putin told Bloomberg.

He said countries now recognize that Iran should be allowed to continue raising production as sanctions have been lifted against the country.

“Iran is starting from a very low position, connected with the well-known sanctions in relation to this country,” the Russian president said, adding, “It would be unfair to leave it on this sanctioned level.”

Global oil prices have seen a fall from a high of 147 dollars a barrel to a low of around 25 dollars in recent years.

Putin held Saudi Arabia responsible for failed attempts by OPEC and non-OPEC oil exporters to reach a pact on stabilizing production levels.

“It wasn’t us who rejected a freeze on production volumes, it was our Saudi partners who at the last minute changed their point of view and decided to take a time out in taking this decision,” Putin said, referring to a deal reached in Qatar in April.

Official Calls Appointment of UN Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran “Unjustified”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always had a fundamental stance on the appointment of a special rapporteur for any country,” Mohammad Javad Larijani, the secretary general of Iranian High Council for Human Rights, said.

He further emphasized that double-standard policies and selective approaches to human rights issues adopted by certain Western governments have led to such an appointment.

The Islamic Republic believes that the appointment of the special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran is totally “rejected and unjustified”.

The remarks came after the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, said in his twitter account on Wednesday that Pakistani human rights activist Asma Jahangir will replace him.

Shaheed also expressed his congratulations to Jahangir and said she will start her work in November.

On June 17, 2011, the UN Human Rights Council, under pressure from the United States and its allies, named former Maldivian foreign minister Shaheed as its human rights investigator on Iran. On March 24, 2016, he was appointed to the position for the sixth year.

During the United World Wrestling Congress held on Sunday on the sidelines of the ongoing World Championships in Macon, France, Iran’s Khadem was elected as the bureau member with 76 votes.

According to a report by Mehr, as translated by IFP, the former Iranian wrestler received the highest number of votes, being followed by Namig Aliev from Azerbaijan Republic and Michel Dusson from France who received 75 and 69 votes, respectively.

For years, Iran did not have any representative in the United World Wrestling boards and bureaus. The last Iranian member was Mohammad Tavakkol.

Tehran, Tokyo to Enhance Economic Cooperation in Post-Sanctions Era: Diplomat

“We had a very good meeting today and mainly we talked about how to expand mutual relations and cooperation in order to prepare needed infrastructures to reach goals in financial and economic issues in the post-sanctions era,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi told Japan’s Kyodo News.

He made the remarks following a Saturday meeting with his Japanese counterpart Kentaro Sonoura in Tehran.

“Iran is grateful to Japan for the allocation of the $10 billion credit line and we are sure that this action by Japan will lead to the blossoming of the two countries’ financial ties,” he further said.

Sonoura arrived in the Iranian capital on Friday and left the country for Qatar late on Saturday. He is also planned to visit a number of other Middle Eastern countries, including Jordan and Egypt.

The Japanese government lifted its sanctions on Iran in January and signed a bilateral investment pact in February in a bid to help Japanese companies do business there amid intensifying foreign competition for access to the Iranian market.

International interest in ties with Iran has been growing since Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 finalized the comprehensive nuclear deal and started implementing it on January 16.

The agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.

ISIS Sets New Football Rules: If You’re Injured, You May Reciprocate!

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), organizers of local games have been told by ISIS commanders that referees would be banned because their decisions “do not judge according to what Allah has revealed” and are “a violation of Allah’s command and the Sunnah,” according to a report by Independent, as covered by YJC.

A system of “Qisas” [reciprocation] for injured footballers has also been introduced in accordance with the retributive justice system enacted under Sharia law, where victims can exact revenge or claim compensation.

Courts established by ISIS to rule on issues of Islamic jurisprudence according to the group’s extremist ideology made the decision to ban match officials.

The move came before the start of the football season in the territory around the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor.

“We’re lucky because the football we play does not run using FIFA’s name – then the organization [ISIS] would have stopped games once and for all and not just refereeing,” a player told the SOHR.

ISIS has a history of using football to promote its beliefs.

In 2015 it passed a law banning people from watching a game between La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, while in May 2016 a seven-year-old boy was reportedly shot by a firing squad after he was heard swearing while playing a game of football with his friends.

ISIS has also banned smoking, satellite dishes, dancing, watching foreign television and private internet access, with anyone breaking its laws facing the prospect of being punished by flogging, shooting, beheading or burning.

The group has suffered a series of notable defeats across Syria and Iraq in recent months and was handed a major blow this week with the killing of propaganda head Abu Muhammad al-Adnani.

Iran Urges Algeria’s Stronger Regional Role

139506131655036648557584

Algeria is expected to play a more active and effective role in resolving the regional woes, particularly the predicaments that some regional countries and the Muslim world are faced with, Jahangiri said in a meeting with Algerian Energy Minister Noureddine Bouterfa, held in Tehran on Saturday.

He also voiced Iran’s strong political will to broaden relations with Algeria, especially after termination of the anti-Iran sanctions under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

For his part, the Algerian minister said the African country is prepared to take whatever action within the framework of a joint commission to boost cooperation and fulfill the interests.

Bouterfa also stressed that Algeria seeks a positive role in resolving the regional crises and establishment of peace.

Back in November 2015, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal paid an official visit to Tehran and discussed closer bilateral relations in a range of fields.

He also met with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, who described as “not desirable” the current level of collaborations between Iran and Algeria.

The Leader had also expressed the hope that bilateral trade ties between the two countries would be enhanced with Sellal’s trip to Tehran and the joint commission meetings.

9 Wonderful Features of War-Hit Yemen

yemen

Here is IFP’s translation of a report by IRNA about the 9 amazing features of the people of Yemen. The features, which are said to have surprised even the Arabs, are cited from the UAE-based Akhbar al-Sa’ah.

Wonder 1: Many historians believe that origin of the Arabs is traced back to Yemen and their ancestors used to live in this country some 2,500 years ago.

Wonder 2: The history of Yemen’s Socotra Island merits attention because of the history of trade of such valuable goods  as incenses in this region; add to this the beautiful scenery and trees of Dracaena cinnabari which are practically non-existent in other parts of the worlds. Dracaena cinnabari tree or dragon blood tree is a dragon tree native to the Socotra archipelago part of Yemen in the Arabian Sea. The tree gets its name from the red sap that oozes out of its trunk.

Wonder 3: The name of this country, Yemen, was mentioned twice in the Muslims’ holy book of Quran in the Surahs Saba and Al-Ahqa.

Wonder 4: Over 80% of Yemenis live in highlands and soaring mountains.

Wonder 5: Yemenis are known for carrying around daggers at their waists. The dagger, which is called “al-Janbieh” among the Arabs, is of best quality. Building daggers is prevalent and popular in this country, and holding a dagger at the waist used to be a symbol of masculinity.

Wonder 6: Wedding ceremonies of Yemeni type are as long as 21 days where the participants perform a traditional dance called “Bara’a” in which the dancers hold daggers and weapons in their hands. It is also a kind of military training for them.

Wonder 7: The district of al-Makha in the city of Ta’iz, which is located on the shores of the Red Sea, has been one of the centres of coffee production in the world since the 15th century.

Wonder 8: According to some narratives, the name of Africa was originally used for Yemen.

Wonder 9: Based on Islamic and Arabic historical narratives, Yemenis are the first people who traditionally set a precedent for shaking hands.

Saudi Arabia, as one of the richest countries in the region and a US-backed state, formed a coalition with 9 other Arab countries and waged a devastating war against the most impoverished Arab country in the region, Yemen.

Hundreds of thousands of people, including women and children, have been killed, injured and displaced since the beginning of the war in March 2015.

During the past 17 months of war the resistant people of this country have been under the unfair siege of Saudis coalition and according to international human rights organizations their abject condition of life has aggravated into human crisis.

Iran Condemns Deadly Terrorist Attacks in Pakistan

Bahram Qassemi

In a statement on Saturday, the Iranian spokesman offered his condolences to the Pakistani government and people, particularly the bereaved families of victims of “the bitter incident” in the Pakistani city of Mardan.

Now, the Islamic Republic of Iran believes more than ever that the crackdown on extremism and terrorism is possible only through international cooperation, he noted.

Qassemi further emphasized that without paying attention to the root causes of extremism and fighting against those spreading violence and Takfiri thoughts, the world cannot overcome the major problem of terrorism.

At least 14 people were killed and more than 50 wounded when a suicide bomber attacked a court in the Pakistani city of Mardan on Friday.

The bomber shot his way through the main gate leading to the district court before throwing a grenade and detonating his suicide vest among the morning crowds, senior police official Ejaz Khan told reporters.

Officials said the bomber had up to eight kilograms of explosives packed in his vest. The dead included lawyers and police.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes three weeks after a massive suicide blast killed scores of lawyers in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta, in Baluchistan.

Friday’s blast came as security forces killed four suicide bombers who were trying to attack a Christian colony near the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial capital of Peshawar, 60 kilometers to the west of Mardan.

One resident was also killed in the attack, the country’s military said. Five people, two of them security personnel, were injured in the attack.
