Iran’s President Meets World Leaders on Sidelines of UNGA

Rouhani Theresa May

Rouhani met the British Prime Minister Theresa May for the first time on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UNGA.

During the meeting, Rouhani lauded the increasing relations between Tehran and London, and called the JCPOA [nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers] a great development and a basis for closer bilateral cooperation, as reported by Press TV.

He also called on all parties of the agreement to fulfill their obligations, adding that until all the technical obstacles in banking and insurance services are not removed, the other side’s commitments are not implemented.

Rouhani said the UK can take the key step in this matter.

Rouhani RenziThe Iranian President also held a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi where he stated that during the post-JCPOA era Italy has the opportunity to become Iran’s main trade partner in Europe.

“Recent bilateral trips are a turning point in relations and a sign of determination of the two nations and governments to bolster cooperation,” said Rouhani.

Leader: Enemy Seeking to Create Discontent by Undermining Iran’s Economy

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei

Speaking Tuesday at a meeting in Tehran with thousands of people from all walks of life on the occasion of Eid al-Ghadeer, Ayatollah Khamenei renewed his call for the realization of Resistance Economy in Iran and said at the current juncture, the main objective of the enemy is to disturb the country’s economy.

The enemy seeks to cause poor economic conditions for the Iranian people and ultimately “create discontent with Islam and the Islamic Establishment,” the Leader said.

“Under such circumstances, the administration, the parliament, and officials working in different sectors, and all the people are duty-bound to plan and act against the enemy’s objective,” Ayatollah Khamenei stressed.

The Leader further hailed the Iranian youths’ relentless efforts to uphold Islam, saying, “With the grace of God, these youths will bring every enemy, including the US and the Zionist regime (of Israel), to their knees.”

There are numerous young people who are highly motivated and prepared to defend the country, Ayatollah Khamenei said, expressing confidence that the youths’ motivation will salvage the country.

Back in March, the Leader named the new Persian year “Year of Resistance Economy: Action and Implementation.”

Thereafter, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said his administration would make every effort to carry out the policies of Resistance Economy.

In 2014, Ayatollah Khamenei had sent a proclamation to heads of Iran’s branches of power and outlined general policies to boost the country’s economy and lower its vulnerabilities under a grand plan, dubbed Resistance Economy.

Iranian Artist Combines Painting with Music

Musical Painting

Pejman Tadayyon, an Iranian artist who has merged painting with music, believes that European music in the medieval era was changed under the inspiration of Eastern and Iranian music, and their church music also flourished because of Muslims’ presence in Southern Europe.

Tadayyon has been living, studying and doing art activities in Italy. Now in an unprecedented effort, he is combining the art of painting with music.

For the first time in the history of art, Tadayyon embedded wires and strings in his paintings and provided an opportunity for the viewers to play some music while enjoying the paintings.

With the help of Islamic Culture and Communication Organization and the Iranian cultural attaché in Italy, Tadayyon intends to launch his first painting exhibition in Tehran to display more than 30 of his works.

Here’s IFP’s translation of excerpts from Fars’ interview with him:

Musical Painting
To the best of our knowledge, you were born in Isfahan, your grandfather was an artist and you grasped the primary concepts of art from him and some other Do you categorize yourself as a developer of a new painting style?

Nowadays, the painting arena is full of numerous styles and techniques to the extent that no painter can purport to invent a new one. I guess it will be an idle boast if someone claims so. What I did was just adding music to the philosophy of painting. My painting styles are symbolism and conceptualism.

We have witnessed many examples of combination in different fields of art, especially in music as it has grown a lot in recent years. As far as I know, however, no one has ever merged painting with music as you did. Is that true?

Just theoretically and philosophically. About a hundred years ago, a Russian painter named Wassily Kandinsky used to give his paintings names like symphony No. 2. He believed that viewers should be able to hear different pieces of music out of different paintings. Pragmatically, however, the viewer can play a piece of music in a painting for real; I have the honour to be the first. It should be noted that artists in other fields such as sculpture have done this before.

Given the fact that the theory was already there, why do you think painters never bothered to develop it into practice?

It is almost impossible because most paintings are painted on a canvas, which is a piece of cloth actually. Since I used to make Setar and Santur [musical instruments of Iranian origin], I managed to find an easy solution for it.

I made painting boards using very thin pieces of wood and did my paintings on them which are quite similar to the paintings on a canvas. If viewers look closely at the paintings, they will notice the delicate strings on the paintings that upon touch will play a piece of music that is associated with the concept of the paintings.

Just like this painting that we are looking at; inside these circles that you see in this painting, the entire musical modal systems of Iranians used to be written in letters like Abjad [a system of writing]. On the upper circles you can find information about a system of musical modal. I have tuned the same system on the lower strings. The viewer can play that piece of music easily.

Musical PaintingAfter years of painting, you are going to put your works on display for the first time in Iran. Has anyone ever done this before in the country?

A. Fortunately no one has ever tried that before in Iran; however, I guess we will witness more similar works from different artists soon.

Have you introduced your new style of painting in other countries too?

A. Just in Italy; but it was in limited scope.

How long have you been weighing up the idea and when exactly did you put the idea into practice?

I’ve been cooking up the idea for almost 10 years up until three years ago when I launched my first exhibition in Italy. I have being cooperating with eight well-known exhibitions in Italy to introduce my new art style.

I am going to further my cooperation with one of the famous exhibitions of Rome and display my works there too. They want to introduce me as the first artist who has combined painting with music.

I have started preliminary talks with several major galleries in France, Canada, and the US in an attempt to hold more exhibitions in these countries.

Is there any relation between the invitations you received for holding exhibitions in different foreign countries and the exhibition you held in Italy?

Yes, indeed, and I have plans to take up the invitations after I am finished in Tehran.

Looking at your works, we found that there is an underlying sense of eastern, Iranian spirit in them. Do you have the same opinion?

These works come out in several styles. Some of them are minimal and unadorned. In these paintings I have tried to observe the link between the Iranian literature, colour and music. Colours applied in all of my paintings are abundantly seen in the tiling of mosques and monuments in Isfahan [a city in central Iran].

In Italy, the cradle of the Renaissance, you have insisted on using Islamic-Iranian art style; could you tell us why?

Mathematics and astronomy have been of most interest in Islamic art. I have lived in Europe for many years. Although they speak of Renaissance all the time, they believe that if it wasn’t for the Islamic art in important cities like Tehran and Baghdad, Europeans would have never gained an understanding of the Greek art. If the Europeans had a chance to benefit from Greek art and books, it was all because of the translations conducted by Muslims.

In an attempt to represent the richness of Iranian art, I have tried to juxtapose a painting from a medieval church with two Iranian paintings that belong to the same period. I should add that, inspired by the eastern and Iranian music and the presence of Muslims in southern Europe, European music flourished in the Middle Age and underwent major changes.

Iran Raps PGCC’s ‘Recurring, Baseless’ Allegations

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi slammed an anti-Iran statement issued by the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council (P)(GCC) foreign ministers after their recent meeting in New York as recurring and baseless.

The PGCC foreign ministers, in their Sunday session held at Saudi Arabia’s permanent mission to the United Nations, criticized what they called Iran’s “interference in the internal affairs” of other countries.

In response, Qassemi said such allegations are part of attempts by one of the PGCC members to pin the blame on others after the international community rose against the connection between Wahhabism and their supporters and the acts of terrorism over the past two decades.

Attempts by a “pretentious” PGCC member to impose its “biased and one-sided views” on limited and small-scale diplomatic meetings are a “failed and invalid tactic,” Qassemi said, referring to the Saudi regime.

Such provocative moves will not help Saudi Arabia to shirk responsibility for the deaths of thousands of Hajj pilgrims in a crush of people in Mina in September 2015, the spokesman added.

During last year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia, over 7,000 people were killed, 477 of whom were Iranians. 12 Iranians were killed in a crane collapse in Mecca, while 465 others lost their lives in Mina crush, known as the worst ever tragedy during Hajj.

So far, Al Saud has not only refused to give an explanation for the incident, make an apology or pay any compensation, but also has accused Iran of trying to politicize Hajj.

Leader Hails Iranian Athletes for Achievements in Rio Paralympics

Iran Leader - Ayatollah Khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in his message praised the success and strong faith of the Iranian athletes and also commemorated Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad who died after an accident during the competitions.

Here is the Leader’s message, as reported by Mehr and edited by IFP:

In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

The Paralympic delegation of Mina Martyrs!

You brought honour to and pleased our dear nation. You raised the name of oppressed martyrs of Mina [the 2015 deadly crush in Saudi Arabia] in the world. You showed off the holy Ihram clothes to enemies of the Islamic rituals. I cordially appreciate and thank you. I hope you will remain strongly committed to your religious duties as always with the self-confidence you deserve. Painful incident for the disabled war veteran and athlete, dear Bahman Golbarnezhad, made me sorry and mournful.

Iranian Police Seize 4.6 Tons of Narcotics in Southern Province

drug1

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Brigadier General Azizollah Maleki pointed to several major operations by his forces in the province, saying that following intelligence operations over the past week, 63 drug smugglers were identified and arrested.

During the operations, the security forces seized 4608 kilograms of various types of illicit drugs, including 3218 kg of opium, he noted.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug trafficking over the past three decades.

The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past 34 years.

Iran Condemns US Airstrike on Syrian Troops

Bahram Qassemi

Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the US-led aerial bombardment of Syrian army forces near the city of Deir ez-Zor, describing such attack as a clear sign of American support for the terrorist groups in the Arab country.

In comments on Sunday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said US-led bombing of Syrian forces and a subsequent offensive by the ISIS demonstrates that terrorist groups in Syria benefit from the backing of the US.

US-led coalition jets on Saturday bombed Syrian government forces’ positions near the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor, killing more than 90 troops and paving the way for ISIS militants.

The Iranian spokesman further slammed the airstrike as a violation of Syria’s independence and sovereignty, noting that US attacks are even risking the ceasefire and propping up the group which has been explicitly branded as a terrorist one in the United Nations Security Council resolutions, as reported by Tasnim.

Thus, he added, such US action was in contradiction to the international regulations and to the commitments of the UN members, particularly a Security Council member.

Iran Condemns US Airstrike on Syrian Troops

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the international adviser to Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, also said US airstrikes on Syrian government forces who are fighting terrorists highlight Washington’s true intentions.

“We strongly denounce the US measures, and do not believe that it was a military mistake,” said Amir-Abdollahian on Sunday during a meeting with Syria’s Ambassador to Tehran, Adnan Hassan Mahmoud.

The US will do anything to weaken Syria’s morale and boost terrorist groups, he added.

“The presence of US soldiers in Syria violates international laws and has not been coordinated with the Syrian government,” he added, as reported by Press TV.

He went on to stress that Washington’s attack on the Syrian army also violated a Russia-US brokered ceasefire in Syria. “Attacking an army which is battling terrorism means backstabbing and helping ISIS,” he noted.

Over 90 Syrian soldiers were killed and 100 injured in the airstrikes by the US-led coalition. Russia said the attacks were performed by two F-16 fighter jets and two A-10 support aircraft.

An unnamed US military official has also said that the bombings in Deir ez-Zor were carried out using US intelligence, which was being gathered for days.

Iran Comes 15th in Rio Paralympics Medal Standings

Paralympic

Iranian national sitting volleyball team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Paralympic Games final.

The Persians beat their arch rival 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15) at the Riocentro – Pavilion 6 to win their sixth Paralympics medal.

The victory marked Iran’s first Paralympic gold since Beijing 2008, when Iran last beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final.

This was the eighth gold medal won by Iranian athletes in Rio Paralympics, helping Iran finish 15th in the event after winning 8 gold, 9 silvers and 7 bronze medals.

China once again dominated the global sporting arena after securing a total of 239 medals from the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

China ranked first on the final medal tally after winning 107 gold, 81 silver and 51 bronze medals from the 11-day sporting event that concluded Sunday in Brazil.

The Chinese Paralympic Team also topped the 2012 London Paralympic Games with a total of 231 medals. This year, China deployed a delegation of 308 Paralympic athletes, the biggest from the 160 nations that participated in the recently-concluded Paralympic Games.

The Great Britain came second with a total of 147 medals, 64 of which are gold, 39 are silver and 44 are bronze.

GolbarnezhadParalympics Closing Ceremony: One Minute Silence Held in Memory of Golbarnezhad

Tributes were paid to Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad, who died on Saturday, at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games closing ceremony.

The prestigious event was brought to a close inside a packed Maracana Stadium on Sunday evening.

Sir Philip Craven, International Paralympic Committee president, said the movement was “united in grief”.

“Tonight is a celebration of the last 12 days of sport but it’s also a very sombre occasion following Saturday’s extremely tragic events,” Craven said, upon opening his speech.

“The passing of Bahman Golbarnezhad has affected us all and left the whole Paralympic movement united in grief.”

Cyclist Golbarnezhad’s death is the first in competition at a summer Olympics or Paralympics since the death of Danish cyclist Knud Enemark Jensen in the 100km team time trial at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

As well as the closing ceremony tribute, flags were lowered to half-mast as Iran won gold on Sunday afternoon in the sitting volleyball gold-medal match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, one of the final events of the Games.

Flags have also been lowered around the Paralympic village.

An investigation into the crash has begun, the IPC said.
