Iranian FM Holds Talks with Senior Romanian Officials

Zarif Romania

Zarif met with Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, President Klaus Iohannis and the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Florin Iordache, in the capital Bucharest on Wednesday.

During his meeting with the top Iranian diplomat, the Romanian prime minister called for the further development of ties between the two countries in all sectors, Press TV reported.

The two officials also discussed bilateral cooperation in the sectors of transportation, energy, agriculture, refining industry, tourism and banking.

Other issues, including the conflict in Syria and the campaign against terrorism and extremism, were also discussed during the meeting.

Moreover, the enhancement of political, economic and parliamentary ties was reviewed in a meeting between Zarif and Romania’s top parliamentarian.

The Iranian and Romanian officials also talked about the key role of the two countries in EU-Middle East relations.

The Romanian parliament backs cooperation with the Islamic Republic, Iordache told Zarif, adding that his country was willing to use Iran’s experience in the fight against terrorism and the issue of refugees.

Zarif also discussed ways to shore up Tehran-Bucharest ties in a meeting with the Romanian president.

Earlier, Zarif and his Romanian counterpart, Lazar Comanescu, signed two documents of cooperation during a meeting in Bucharest.

The two top diplomats sat down for talks on Wednesday and signed the two agreements concerning bilateral political consultations as well as the potential removal of visa restrictions for Romania-bound Iranian diplomats.

The attendant business delegation comprises representative from banking, energy, transportation, medical, pharmaceutical, mine, auto parts, and agricultural machinery sectors.

His visit to Romania is taking place in response to a three-day trip by his Romanian counterpart, Lazar Comanescu, which started on February 29.

Zarif is in Romania on the first leg of an East Europe tour that will also take him to Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

US Election Results Won’t Affect Iran Policies: Rouhani

President Hassan Rouhani

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump won more than 270 electoral votes in the 2016 presidential election on Wednesday, enough to make him the 45th president of the United States even as vote counting continued in a number of states.

The Iranian chief executive added that Washington cannot continue to spread Iranophobia as forcefully as before in order to win international consensus against the Islamic Republic.

“The Islamic Republic’s policy of constructive interaction with the world and breaking up nuclear sanctions, has placed Iran’s economic ties with all countries on an improving and irreversible course,” he noted.

Rouhani further said a nuclear agreement negotiated with Iran under the outgoing US administration is not a deal with a single country or a single government.

The deal has been reflected in a UN Security Council Resolution, and therefore, cannot be overturned on the back of one government’s decision, Rouhani added.

The agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was struck between Iran on the one side, and the US, France, China, Britain, Russia, and Germany on the other in June 2015.

‘US Must Still Honor JCPOA’

Also reacting to the US election results, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said during a visit to Romania that the Islamic Republic expected the US president-elect to honor the JCPOA.

“It is our norm not to interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries,” Foreign Minister Zarif said, commenting on Trump’s win.

“Since Iran and the US have no political relations, what is important is that America’s next president is bound by the multilateral commitments of the JCPOA,” he said, referring to the nuclear deal.

“We are certain the international community would expect the same thing from the United States of America.”

Ever since the deal was struck, its opponents in the US Congress have been threatening that a future US administration opposed to the agreement would scrap it.

Trump had threatened he would “tear up” the JCPOA or try to renegotiate its terms if he was to be elected president.

Back in July, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said, “We will not violate the JCPOA, but if the opposite side violates it – as US presidential candidates are currently threatening to tear up the JCPOA – if they tear up the JCPOA, we will burn it.”

In practice, however, the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), runs little risk of being scrapped out of hand by any level-headed American government as it has been endorsed by a United Nations Security Council resolution, meaning that it has effectively become international law.

Zarif said the president of the US should “grasp the realities of the world today and connect his policies with those realities.”

‘Wrongful US Policies Behind Mideast Crises’

Later, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi also reacted to the win, saying Washington’s policies and approaches over the past decades have brought about “an unpleasant, bitter experience” for the Iranian government and people.

“What is important to Iran and its people, and would be used by them as evaluation criteria is the next US administration’s future performance and executive policies,” he added.

He further said the policies of previous US administrations and their intervention in Middle Eastern countries are the “main factor behind the escalation of tensions” in the troubled region.

All these testify to the need for the US to seriously review its policies vis-à-vis other regions, he added.

‘Americans Frustrated With Political Structure’

Meanwhile, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani, said the outcome of the US election indicate “a rise in frustration and distrust among the majority of the American society with the current structure and trends in the country.”

He, however, expressed hope that the election paves the way for the US to revise its policies, which were based on disregard for the interests of the majority and reliance on countless resources, which it was using to pursue imperialism, interventionism, warfare, and bloodshed against other countries.

Shamkhani, meanwhile, asserted that no change of the ruling system in any foreign country would prompt Iran to change its “independent course and smart attitude.”

US Must Fulfil JCPOA Commitments: Iran’s FM Says after Trump Victory

“We do not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries,” Zarif, who is on an official visit to Romania, told reporters on Wednesday, after Republican candidate Donald Trump emerged victorious in the US presidential elections.

“This is the American people’s election,” he added.

Zarif, however, underlined that anyone becoming US president ought to recognize the realities of the world and the Middle East and face them realistically.

“Iran and the US have no political relations but the US must carry out what it has undertaken as an international multilateral commitment in the JCPOA,” he stressed, referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear agreement Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached in July 2015 and implemented in January this year.

Republican Donald Trump stunned the world by defeating Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House, ending eight years of Democratic rule.

Israel Main Threat to Humanity: Iran’s FM

“The most serious threat to our region and the world of humanity is the Zionist regime. This colonial phenomenon is the source of all threats to peace, security and human rights,” Zarif said at a meeting with leaders of Palestinian resistance groups in Beirut, Lebanon.

By possessing at least 200 nuclear warheads, implementing aggressive policies and violating all international regulations, Israel is the most dangerous enemy of human rights, the top Iranian diplomat added.

He also denounced attempts by certain parties in the Muslim world to downplay the threat of Israel and replace it with fake threats.

Zarif further referred to Takfiri terrorism as the second greatest threat to the region and the world, saying it is astonishing that Takfiris have not posed any threat to the Zionist regime of Israel whatsoever.

The threats of Israel and Takfiri terrorism are linked, he explained, saying the proponents of resistance have to unite against those menaces.

Foreign Minister Zarif also underscored that the issue of Palestine remains to be the Islamic world’s overriding concern.

Zarif arrived in Beirut on Monday and held a meeting with Lebanon’s new President Michel Aoun, becoming the first foreign minister to meet with the newly-elected leader.

Global Markets Plunge as Republican Donald Trump Gains A Path To US Presidency

US stock futures plunged, with futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 792 points, or over 5.1%.

At the open of trading, stocks in London were plunging over 4.3%, while losses accelerated for Asian markets. The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong tumbled 2.97%, the South Korean Kospi fell 3.4% and the Japanese Nikkei 225 was down 4.7%. Australian and New Zealand markets fell by a similar measure.

Fear proxies like the US dollar, gold and government bonds surged. Gold rose $40 to $1,316 a troy ounce, or over 3.4%. Ten-year US Treasury note yields fell 12 basis points to 1.73%, indicating an investor flight to the safety of government bonds, Forbes reported.

The Mexican peso, the asset that has swung most violently depending on prospects for the presidential vote, plunged. On Tuesday, as Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton showed strength in early voting, the peso rose to two-week highs. However, it tumbled over 11.3% as of 11:35 p.m. ET.

Virginia and Michigan are trending in Clinton’s direction, while Wisconsin is moving in Trump’s favor. Pennsylvania and New Hampshire remain too close to call.

As voting has come in decidedly in favor of Trump, defying the expectations of almost every national poll and many state polls, it was the IBD/TIPP Tracking poll that may have won Tuesday. It predicted Trump’s victory in a final national survey on Tuesday afternoon.

Iran FM Arrives in Romania on First Leg of East Europe Tour

Mohammad Javad Zarif

Heading a politico-economic delegation, Zarif launched his three-nation tour of East European countries on Tuesday. He also plans to travel to Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

During his stay in Bucharest, the top Iranian diplomat is scheduled to meet top Romanian dignitaries including President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos and Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu.

He will also deliver a speech at a trade and financial forum as well as a conference on the fight against extremism and terrorism.

Zarif plans to visit the Palace of the Parliament, which is the seat of Romania’s Parliament in central Bucharest and is the second largest administrative building in the world after The Pentagon in the United States.

His visit to Bucharest is taking place in response to a three-day trip by his Romanian counterpart which started on February 29.

The Romanian foreign minister’s visit came as part of a series of visits by world leaders to Tehran after the implementation of a nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was signed between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries in July 2015.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia – plus Germany started to implement the JCPOA on January 16.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related bans imposed against Tehran.

The Iranian foreign minister paid an official visit to four North European countries of Poland, Finland, Sweden and Latvia in late May and early June.

The US elections and its results were the main headline in many newspapers today. The majority of them have referred to the possible victory of Hillary Clinton based on early results.

Another top story was Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s visit to Lebanon and his meetings with senior Lebanese officials including Secretary General of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah.

The gas deal between Iran, France, and China for development of South Pars Gas Field also received great coverage.

Newspapers also covered the government’s reaction to yesterday’s remarks by Judiciary Chief about the contradictory remarks by President Hassan Rouhani about freedom of press. Rouhani had criticized the Judiciary for its actions against newspapers, but the Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani later revealed that Rouhani has in many cases complained to the Leader Ayatollah Khamenei about the Judiciary’s inaction in countering certain newspapers. Now, the Government Spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht says Rouhani is an advocate of freedom of press and speech, but the government is opposed to freedom of insult and lie.

Saudi Abuse of Sanctities Very Dangerous: Iran

“By fabricating stories and irrelevant subjects, Saudi Arabia is using religious issues and sanctities for political exploitation,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday.

Saudis have baselessly leveled such an allegation against Yemen and are currently making efforts to use it as a lever in Muslim countries, he added.

Yemeni army forces and allied fighters from Popular Committees launched a locally designed and manufactured ballistic missile towards an area deep inside Saudi Arabia on October 27 in response to the Riyadh regime’s atrocious aerial bombardments against the crisis-hit Arab country.

Yemeni soldiers and their allies fired a Borkan-1 (Volcano-1) missile towards King Abdulaziz International Airport, located 19 kilometers north of the western Saudi port city of Jeddah.

A military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, later told the official Saba news agency that the 12.5-meter-long missile had pounded its target accurately and left massive destruction at the airport.

Saudi media outlets, however, reported that the kingdom’s missile systems intercepted and destroyed the solid propellant and Scud-type missile before it could cause any damage.

The Saudi military, meanwhile, claimed that the Yemeni missile was fired toward the holy city of Mecca, but the Houthi Ansarullah movement has rejected the claim.

Yemen fighters launch these attacks in retaliation to Saudi Arabia’s relentless airstrikes in the country which have been carried out since March 2015. The war was launched in an unsuccessful attempt to reinstate Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who has resigned as Yemen’s president. The UN puts the death toll from the military aggression at over 10,000.

Hariri Stresses Lebanon’s Resolve to Develop Ties with Iran

zarif

Hariri, who is tasked with forming a new government, reiterated the Arab country’s determination to strengthen cooperation with the Islamic Republic in all areas, especially in economic fields.

He also referred to Lebanese political groups’ success to end a 29-month presidential vacuum in the country and said it serves as a good model for politically resolving problems currently facing the region.

On October 31, Lebanese legislators elected Michel Aoun as president following an agreement reached by various political groups.

Many Lebanese believe that the resolution of the presidential stalemate and Aoun’s election would breathe new life into the country.

In the Tuesday meeting, Iran’s foreign minister hailed the political agreement reached in Lebanon and voiced the Islamic Republic’s readiness to offer any kind of help and cooperation the Arab country needs.

Zarif added that when it comes to regional issues, too, cooperation and dialogue are key to ending crises.

The Iranian top diplomat, who arrived in Beirut on Monday, also held a number of other high-profile meetings, including with Secretary General of Hezbollah Seyed Hassan Nasrallah, new President Michel Aoun, and Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.

Hezbollah Source of Pride for Muslim World: Iran’s Zarif

zarif

Zarif made the remarks in a meeting with Lebanon-based Iranian officials and their families in the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday. He has traveled to the country at the head of a business delegation.

He said Lebanon embodied “the resistance’s triumph over the tyranny, occupation, and bloodletting of the Zionist regime (Israel).”

Hezbollah is credited with defending Lebanon against two wars launched by Israel, in 2000 and 2006. The resistance movement has also been successfully helping the Syrian army fight Saudi-backed Takfiri militants in order to prevent the Syrian conflict from spilling over to Lebanon.

The top Iranian diplomat also hailed the recent election of Michel Aoun as the Lebanese president, which ended a 29-month presidential vacuum in the country.

“The creation of domestic consensus in Lebanon led to considerable success not only for one group but also for all of the Lebanese,” he said.

‘Region Set Afire by Angry States’

Zarif also said some regional states harbored certain undue concerns following the successful negotiation of a nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers in 2015 and “set the region on fire” as a result of such concerns.

“The innocent people of Yemen and Syria are paying for the phobia and the very destructive game by the angry states of the region,” he noted. “We hope these countries will soon come to the conclusion that the continuation of these policies will not lead to anything other damage to themselves.”

Saudi Arabia has been waging war on Yemen since March 2015. Along with some other regional and non-regional countries, Riyadh has also been backing a deadly militancy in Syria.

‘Israel is world’s most dangerous regime’

In a later meeting with some Lebanon-based Palestinian groups, Zarif said the issue of Palestine is “one of the most important issues facing the Muslim world.”

“Support for Palestine is support for resistance, Islam, and humanity,” he said.

“Today, a major danger threatens the Muslim world; it is the biggest threat to the region and the international community, namely the threat posed by the Zionist regime,” Zarif said.

The Iranian foreign minister concluded by billing Israel as “the most dangerous regime in the world,” calling attention to the Tel Aviv’s possession of at least 200 nuclear warheads and its record of military aggression.

Hezbollah Source of Pride for Muslim World: Iran’s Zarif

Meeting With Nasrallah

Later in the day, Zarif also met with Nasrallah.

During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister and Hezbollah’s chief discussed recent political developments in Lebanon and the region.
