Iranian Sailors Stranded at Sea Back Home after 3 Months

Iranian Sailors Stranded at Sea Back Home after 3 Months

Six Iranian sailors on a fishing launch adrift in the Indian Ocean for around three months have returned home.

They are all from the port city of Chabahar in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan.

One of them told the IRIB that their launch had been damaged and its engines had stopped working.

“Water began to leak in gradually, and our hopes of staying alive diminished every day,” said the sailor.

They survived for two months and 22 days using the food and water they had on the launch.

“When our launch began to sink, we had to leave it and get on the lifeboat.”

They were adrift for three days on the lifeboat as well. Finally, they saw a coast. The captain and a young sailor, who were apparently more energetic than the others, swam 15 kilometres all the way to the beach.

When they were back on terra firma, locals took them to the police. Then they realized they were on Kenyan soil.

Using body gestures, the two sailors made the police understand that their friends were at sea, waiting for help. Kenya’s maritime police finally got to the sailors and saved them.

The sailors say while they were stranded, they went through an ordeal. They were surrounded by sharks and feared they might be captured by pirates.

They believe it was a miracle and God’s blessing that they survived. They also thanked staff members at the Iranian embassy in Nairobi for their cooperation and help.

The top story today was the Guardian Council’s statement, in which it confirmed the result of Iran’s presidential election, and stated that it has reported the electoral offences to the Judiciary.

The return of 6 Iranian sailors to the country after being lost in the Indian Ocean for three months also received great coverage.

Another top story was the latest developments in European countries, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s remarks about the US-Europe ties, and the upcoming elections in Britain.

Iran Condemns Deadly Attack on Kabul

Iran Condemns Deadly Attack on Kabul

Qassemi on Wednesday strongly condemned the ‘criminal’ attack on Kabul which killed at least 80 and injured 350, and expressed sympathy with the Afghan nation and government.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will always stand by the innocent and great nation of Afghanistan in hard and difficult conditions,” he added

The Iranian spokesman rejected any use of violence for achieving one’s goals, and expressed the hope that political initiatives and dialogue between Afghan groups would prevent the recurrence of such anti-human attacks targeting Afghanistan’s stability and security.

Iran hopes that the talks between Afghan groups would be held without the interference of certain regional and ultra-regional countries accused of arming radical and terrorist groups, he went on to say.

Qassemi said terrorist attacks are brutal, blameworthy, and rejected acts, which should be strongly condemned and responded to, no matter where and on what pretext they take place, and which group is behind them.

“The suicide attack in Kabul is yet another warning that failing to show a decisive reaction to the inauspicious phenomenon, and the continued support of certain countries for these extremist groups in the region within the past few weeks, have increased these types of brutal acts,” he added.

Qassemi called on all peace-seeking communities and countries to seriously study and consider the issue of radicalism and the causes of its growth as well as its propagators and sponsors in a huge campaign.

Larijani Re-Elected as Speaker of Iran’s Parliament

During an open session of the parliament on Wednesday morning, the MPs held an election to appoint the parliament’s presiding board.

During the polls, Larijani secured 204 votes out of 268 valid votes.

Massoud Pezeshkian and Ali Motahhari were also elected as the vice speakers of the new parliament during its second year.

The Iranian Parliament has currently 290 representatives, changed from the previous 272 seats since the 18 February 2000 election. The most recent parliamentary polls were held on February 26, 2016.

The lawmakers take the seats for a four-year term.

The Zoroastrians and Jews each elect one representative in the parliament, Assyrian and Chaldean Christians jointly elect one representative, and Armenian Christians in the north and the south are each represented by one lawmaker, according to the Parliament’s official website.

US Defence Secretary’s Anti-Iran Claims Reward for Saudis

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi on Tuesday rejected the US defense secretary’s allegations that an alleged plot by Iranians to kill the former Saudi ambassador to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir, was an “operation approved at the highest level.”

“The aforementioned accusations by US defense secretary about the [failed] assassination of an Arab ambassador in Washington by Iran are a fabricated and unfounded scenario,” Qassemi said, adding, “US divisive policies vis-à-vis Muslim countries are among this country’s strategic objectives with the purpose of creating fabricated and fake threats to plunder the assets of the regional people.”

He said some warmongering officials in the US and Saudi Arabia, as its ally in the Persian Gulf region, are pursuing such a false scenario, adding that the Islamic Republic paid no heed to such “baseless” accusations.

It was not surprising that Mattis made such allegations only a few days after the US president’s trip to Riyadh, because leveling groundless claims was an option for Washington to make up for Saudis’ generosity, Qassemi added.

On his first overseas trip since taking office, President Trump attended a signing ceremony on May 20 for almost $110 billion worth of military equipment to support Saudi Arabia’s military.

The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that Washington’s double standard-driven approach to terrorism poses a serious threat to stability and security across the world, particularly in the Middle East region.

He warned that the continuation of such policies would damage the prospects of the international community’s success in fighting the “ominous and dangerous phenomenon of terrorism.”

In a televised interview with CBS’s Face the Nation this week, Mattis claimed that the Iranian officials “are not looking out for the best interests of their people.”

“You’ve got this revolutionary cause that then causes them to go around creating mischief everywhere else; including trying to murder an Arab ambassador fewer than two miles away from the White House a couple of years ago,” he claimed.

Jubeir, who now serves as the Saudi foreign minister, escaped a failed assassination attempt in 2011. Iran has vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged plot.

Iran’s Persepolis Books Place in AFC Champions League Quarters

Chico Flores own goal handed the Iranian side a 1-0 victory over Lekhwiya in the second leg of the last 16.

After a goalless draw in the first leg in Tehran last week, Persepolis grabbed a crucial away goal midway through the first half at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium when Vahid Amiri released Mehdi Taremi, whose low ball across goal was diverted into his own net by Flores.

The host introduced Youssef El Arabi shortly after the interval and the Moroccan striker almost had an immediate impact but his close-range effort from Nam Tae-hee’s center was deflected onto the crossbar and over.

Lekhwiya continued to probe but, despite dominating possession, was struggling to break through a resilient Persepolis backline and Farshad Ahmadzadeh almost killed the tie off when he had a rare sight on goal for the visitors with six minutes remaining but stabbed just wide.

Youssef Msakni and Nam’s late misses summed up the host’s misery as Persepolis held firm to qualify for the last eight, while Lekhwiya fell at the Round of 16 for the second successive year.

Guardian Council Confirms Result of Iran’s Presidential Election

Guardian Council Confirms Result of Iran's Presidential Election

Guardian Council is the body responsible for overseeing elections and confirming their results in Iran.

“Minutes ago, the Guardian Council’s letter confirming the validity of the 12th presidential election was received,” Interior Ministry Spokesman Salman Samani said on Tuesday.

In the letter, Secretary of the Guardian Council Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati announced that the body had received and examined reports and complaints about the election process and ultimately verified the poll’s overall result, he added.

The official said the 12-member supervisory body had received complaints of irregularities in the electoral activities before the election and on the day of voting on May 19, adding that some of them had been sent to judicial bodies for more investigation.

Guardian Council Confirms Result of Iran's Presidential Election

President Rouhani, a moderate candidate, won a resounding reelection victory with 23,549,616 votes or 57 percent of the total ballots. His main rival in the four-man race, Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi, a principlist, secured 15,786,449 votes or 38.5 percent of the ballots. Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim and Mostafa Hashemi-Taba, the other two candidates, received 478,215 and 215,450 votes respectively.

Overall turnout in Iran’s 12th presidential election was registered at over 73 percent.

Six candidates had been approved after vetting by the Guardian Council to run for president. In the final days of campaigning, however, two of the candidates, namely First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri and Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, withdrew from the race in favor of President Rouhani and Raeisi, respectively.

Israel’s Medical Tourism Flourishing Thanks to Persian Gulf Arabs

Top 10 Highest Paying Medical Jobs in 2020

Despite a longstanding hostility between Arabs and the Israeli regime over Tel Aviv’s occupation of Palestinian territories, latest reports indicate that the Palestinian cause is gradually being cosigned to oblivion, at least among Persian Gulf Arab states.

According to the investigation journalist Asaf Jaipur, there is growing medical tourism from the Persian Gulf to Israel, as well as more moves to allow the Persian Gulf to open its markets to Israeli companies.

Members of the royal families and wealthy people are seeking medical treatment in Israel, flying to Cyprus and from there to Tel Aviv.

There are specialist in the Persian Gulf whose jobs are to coordinate travel to Israel and arrange their transfer to hospitals.

They are arranging transportation directly from Ben Gurion Airport to Israeli hospitals.

The princess of the royal family in Bahrain recently arrived in Cyprus, and from there to Ben Gurion Airport, where she was transferred to the Rambam hospital in Haifa. The 50 year old princess underwent surgery and then returned to Bahrain.

A large number of princes and princesses from the Persian Gulf arrive in Israel to receive treatment, helping the Israeli regime’s medical tourism thrive.

In addition, the investigation showed that Israeli companies are operating in the Persian Gulf markets freely through partnerships set up by the American companies.

He stressed that Israeli companies are an integral part of the global American companies operating in the Persian Gulf markets segment, noting that the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council authorities are turning a blind eye to the activities of these companies, although they recognized Israeli companies.

Old Iranian Lady Starts Painting ‘Suddenly at 84‘

Ra’fat Sarraf, an 86-year-old Iranian lady who has suddenly started painting at the age of 84, has held an exhibition of her artworks titled “Suddenly at the Age of 84” in Tehran.

Her identity card says she is 86 years old, but, as far as her character is concerned, she is among the youngest 86-year-old people on earth.

Old Iranian Lady Starts Painting ‘Suddenly at 84‘Two years ago, at 84, she suddenly started to admire the wondrous world of colours and became infatuated with painting.

UPDATE: Mrs. Sarraf passed away on June 20, 2017, at the age of 86.

Golestan Art Gallery, in Tehran, is currently hosting an expo of her paintings. Although she might not be able to be physically present at the expo due to senescence and its associated problems, as soon as you take a glance at the artworks, you realize they have been created by a kind grandmother who has revived her childhood memories on pieces of paper using the enchanting power of colours, despite all the exhaustion and lack of stamina typical of her age.

Elaborating on Ra’fat’s works and the way they have been created, Ameneh Sarraf, her daughter and a graphic designer, said, “There is a charity house in the proximity of where we live, in which physically and mentally handicapped children are taken care of. I used to teach painting to these kids. This was concurrent with the deterioration of my mothers’ physical and mental health condition. She had developed allergy and had to scratch herself incessantly. I bought her a number of painting tools, such as pen and paper, to distract her.”

Old Iranian Lady Starts Painting ‘Suddenly at 84‘“I told her stories of the handicapped kids and talked to her about the impacts they had on me. [After a while,] I told my mother to paint whatever she liked. She asked me to draw sketches for her so that she could paint them. At first, I refrained from doing sketches for her, as I thought that she should be able to draw them using her own imagination. Nevertheless, this was adding to her stress.”

She said at the beginning, she had to draw quick sketches to enable her mother to recover from her allergy as soon as possible and stop scratching herself.

“After a while, however, the nurses responsible for taking care of my mother, told me that she did not let them sleep, for she stayed up late at night painting the sketches. This came as my mother kept asking me to buy her more painting tools and draw new sketches.”

She said following a brief period of time, her mother was able to draw her own forms by altering those of hers.

“She asked me to teach her how to paint light and shadow. Each time that I saw her works, I was surprised at their quality and wondered how she could have created them. I kept asking myself how it was possible. Even, some of the works were created while she was bedridden at hospital.”

“Unfortunately, these days she has become weaker and lacks sufficient energy. She used to do a painting in 24 hours, but, over the past thirty days, she has hardly managed to finish even one.”

A total of 36 paintings by Raf’at on 32*42cm papers have been put on display at the gallery.

Her daughter maintains that Ra’fat has developed her style based on her passion for life. All of these works have been created over the past two years during which she has been struggling with her disease.

Rouhani May Appoint Three Female Ministers in New Cabinet

Rouhani May Appoint Three Female Ministers in New Cabinet

Iran’s vice-president for women and family affairs, Shahindokht Molaverdi, maintains that now more than ever, the ground is prepared for the presence of women ministers in the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s new cabinet, which is supposed be formed by mid-August.

“We are optimistic about that. Given the characteristics of Rouhani’s first term and in view of the different conditions in which the next government is going to begin its term in office [compared to the previous one], now the grounds are a lot more prepared [than four years ago] for female ministers to be appointed to the cabinet,” she noted.

Nevertheless, Molaverdi said, this is the Iranian Parliament which has the final say on the issue, adding, “We predict that President Rouhani would propose two to three woman ministers to the Parliament for his cabinet. We will do our best to this end.”

Having a number of female ministers in the cabinet has been among the main demands of the women who voted for Rouhani in May 19 presidential election.

In Rouhani’s first term in office (2013-17), two women were among the Iranian president’s vice-presidents: Masoumeh Ebtekar, the head of the Department of the Environment, and Zahra Ahmadi-Pour, the head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization.

In addition, the country’s first-ever Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Marzieh Afkham, was appointed in in Rouhani’s government. She was later dispatched to Malaysia as Iran’s first-ever woman ambassador.

Nevertheless, the expectations of Iran’s women community, comprising more than 50 percent of the Iranian university students, are greater this time while only a couple of months are left before Rouhani assumes office for the second time.

Iranian women played a very significant role in May to extend the tenure of the Rouhani’s moderate government for another four-year time-span.
