Iran Starts Construction of Its First University in Iraq

The Iranian university will house five faculties, including experimental sciences, humanities and Islamic sciences, Abdollah Hassani, the head of university’s board of trustees and vice chancellor for administrative and financial affairs, was quoted as saying by IRNA.

Faculties of literature, jurisprudence and law will be set up in the first stage of the project, he said.

Hassani further noted the university will be constructed in an area of 22,500 square metres and is expected to host 3,000 students initially.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Cultural Office in Iraq was quoted as saying that the two neighbouring states have so far signed over 50 scientific and academic memoranda of understanding and over 3,000 Iraqi students are studying in Iranian universities.

‘Iran Should Establish Genetic Data Bank for Inmates’

Genetic

Iranian legislator Farhad Tajari has, in a Farsi interview with ICANA, weighed in on the necessity of diagnosing the diseases of inmate using a genetic data bank.

He said the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization intends to issue genetic cards for all people, but more specifically, the head of the Prisons Organization has spoken of the establishment of a genetic bank for inmates.

“At the moment, determining the blood groups of prisoners as well as certain other things is done on a limited scale, but inmates have had no genetic document that would contain formation on dangerous diseases; so, the establishment of a genetic data bank for inmates will play a key role in solving some of the problems at jails,” he said.

Using a genetic data bank, he said, one can find access to a criminal’s clinical background.

“There have been cases where somebody else has disguised himself as the real criminal and come to prison; of course, this problem can be solved through fingerprinting. However, the establishment of a person’s identity and identifying the background of dangerous diseases would be possible only through the creation of a genetic data bank,” he said.

The MP noted that such a data bank would be very important as far as a prisoner’s health and treatment are concerned.

Ukraine Bridge for Export of Iran’s Petchem Products

Marzieh Shahdaei made the statement on the sidelines of a meeting with Sergei Burdiliak, the Ukrainian ambassador to Iran, Shana reported on Monday.

The two sides discussed Ukraine’s potential as a marketing hub for Iran’s petrochemical products as well as transfer of technology.

“Iran can sell petrochemicals to European markets under swap operations or embark on exports directly through Ukraine,” Shahdaei said.

“Iran’s petrochemical exports to East Europe have jumped by 70% in the first half of the year compared with the same period of previous year,” she added, without providing details.

The NPC chief noted that according to the Ukrainian ambassador, bilateral trade ties, particularly in the petrochemical sector, have significantly increased following the lifting of sanctions. Shahdaei said Ukraine has three oil refineries that use Russian feedstock, but those facilities are poised to use Iranian crude oil.

Ukraine reportedly purchased $236,000 worth of crude oil from Iran in June but the purchase rose to $5.4 million in July, which saw the East European country importing 152,655 tons of oil in total, according to Press TV, citing Ukraine’s State Fiscal Service.

Iran’s crude oil exports to European Union countries in the first four months of the year reached 9.31 million tons, more than six times higher than those in the corresponding period last year.

That is equivalent to a total of 66.5 million barrels, or nearly 560,000 barrels per day, Tasnim News Agency reported last month, citing Eurostat, the official news portal of the European Commission.

The 28-nation bloc took in 1.37 million tons of oil in January-April 2016. The higher export is largely attributed to the lifting of international restrictions against Iran, which allowed the OPEC member to recoup the lost ground in the global crude market.

Iran Condemns Burkina Faso Terrorist Attacks

Burkina Faso Terrorist Attacks

In a statement on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the Burkina Faso attacks and said such ‘inhumane’ and ‘violent’ crimes committed by extremist groups against innocent people have nothing to do with religious teachings, particularly those of Islam which enjoys originals principles of humanity, mercy, and peace-seeking.

“Today, terrorism is a global problem, and its eradication needs the resolve and will of all countries,” he added.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the victims of the ominous phenomenon and one of the most serious countries fighting against terrorism in the region with a firm resolve, has made constructive and remarkable efforts in this regard,” Qassemi went on to say.

He also expressed Tehran’s preparedness to cooperate with other countries and transfer its experiences in fight against terror.

Gunmen shot dead 18 people and injured others at a cafe in the centre of the Burkinabe capital Ouagadougou, according to the West African country’s government.

At least eight foreigners and seven locals were among those killed in Sunday’s evening attack on the Aziz Istanbul cafe, the government added.

The gunmen, thought to be extremists, fired on customers on the terrace before making their way inside.

Two attackers were killed in a siege which lasted into the morning.

General Baqeri, accompanied by IRGC Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour and a number of other high-ranking officials, arrived in Ankara on Tuesday morning to meet with his Turkish counterpart and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

During his three-day stay, the Iranian official will confer with Turkish authorities on the issue of fight against terrorism, regional developments, Tehran-Ankara defensive ties, and border cooperation will be discussed during the meetings.

Iran Football Wins Case against Saudi Arabia at CAS

Iran has won a case against Saudi Arabia in the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after seriously pursuing the matter for quite some time, according to a Farsi report by Varzesh3 news website.

Iran’s Football Federation filed a lawsuit against its Saudi counterpart a year ago for the Arab federation’s refusal to allow its footballers to come to Iran. Representatives and lawyers from both countries held meetings at the CAS for almost a year amid a political tug of war between Tehran and Riyadh. Finally, it was announced that Iran had won the case against Saudi Arabia.

In the last session of the CAS, Saudi Arabia was convicted and sentenced to paying damages and all costs caused by its wrong decision. The costs include the expenses of Iranian representatives’ trips to third countries as well as fines.

With this verdict, we should now wait and see which side will host matches between Iran and Saudi Arabia in the next AFC Champions League season. Iran has announced it has no problem sending its players to Saudi Arabia. The court ruling can make Saudi Arabia host games after several years.

What is interesting is that the CAS, based on its rules, has not allowed the Iranian Football Federation to announce the news on the ruling to media. Anyway, Iran’s winning the case is good news and a success for the Islamic Republic. We should also wait and see how the Asian Football Confederation will react to the news.

IRGC Rejects US Claims on ‘Unsafe’ Drone Operation

The IRGC’s drone division released a statement on Tuesday stressing that all aerial operations in Iran’s Air Defense Identification Zone are carried out in accordance with the standard safety regulations, rejecting the claims by the US Navy.

“IRGC drone patrols in Iran’s Air Defense Identification Zone will continue with precision and in a continues manner to safeguard the borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran without taking heed to the psychological warfare operations of foreign forces present in the Persian Gulf,” added the statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, US Navy spokesman Lieutenant Ian McConnaughey said in a statement that an Iranian QOM-1 drone flew within 300 meters (1,000 feet) of aircraft based on the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier in international waters on Sunday night, calling it an “unsafe and unprofessional” incident.

“Despite repeated radio calls to establish communications and remain clear, the QOM-1’s controlling station was unresponsive and the (drone) did not use any aircraft navigation lights while it made several passes in close proximity to Nimitz and its escort ships during active flight operations, coming within 1,000 feet of US aircraft,” he said.

Iranian forces are tasked with guaranteeing security within the country’s maritime borders, where they have been involved in a series of face-offs with US vessels for intrusion into Iranian territorial waters.

Iran has repeatedly warned that any act of transgression into Iran’s territorial waters would be met with an immediate and befitting response.

In recent years, Iran’s Navy has increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers. It has also conducted major drills to enhance its defense capabilities.

Iran’s Rouhani, Russia’s Putin Discuss Bilateral Ties

In the conversation, President Rouhani said enhancement of strategic relations with the neighbors, particularly with Russia, constitutes a principled policy of Iran.

Stressing the need for closer economic interaction between the two countries, he said Iran welcomes cooperation with the Russian investors and private sectors in the implementation of various projects.

President Rouhani also touched on the complicated situation in the region and the conflicts in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria, emphasizing the necessity for close coordination between Iran and Russia in resolving the tensions and in the fight against terrorism.

He further described the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as a multilateral agreement, and slammed the US government for violating the nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Rouhani underlined that Iran has remained fully committed to the nuclear deal, saying the reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency have verified such commitment.

For his part, Putin called for stronger relations between Russia and Iran, saying the Russian investors and economic activists are eager to be involved in projects inside Iran.

He also urged close interaction between Tehran and Moscow in settling the regional conflicts, particularly in the fight against terrorism in Syria, saying Tehran-Moscow cooperation has yielded good results in stabilizing the situation in the region.

Putin also noted that the IAEA has verified Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA and emphasized that violation of the deal by any side would be a breach of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

Iran Condoles with Sierra Leone over Deadly Landslide

Iran Condoles with Sierra Leone over Deadly Landslide

In his Tuesday statement, Qassemi also expressed sympathy with the Muslim nation and government of Sierra Leone.

More than 300 people have been killed after a mudslide and heavy flooding in Sierra Leone.

A coroner’s official said that more than 200 bodies had been taken to the city mortuary, which was left struggling to cope. The Red Cross said the death toll had risen to 312.

However, a precise death toll is not yet clear and is likely to rise as many people might have been asleep when the mudslide happened in the early hours of Monday.

An estimated 2,000 people have also been made homeless after heavy rains caused properties to disappear under water.

Iran to Avenge ISIS Killing of Mohsen Hojaji: IRGC

Commander of the Ground Force of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour says Iran has expanded its operational fields, and its sphere of combat and defence has gone beyond the country’s borders.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of a ceremony held to honour martyr Mohsen Hojaji and his family. An Iranian military advisor in Syria, Hojaji was captured and decapitated by ISIS terrorists a few days ago.

According to a Farsi report by the Fars News Agency, the top general went on to say that the enemy resorted to different plots after the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s to deal a blow to the Islamic Republic.

“It’s been several years we’ve been fighting terrorists backed by hegemonic powers and the wicked Al Saud rulers in southeast, west, northwest and southwest of Iran. However, we have good tranquility in the country and an acceptable level of security,” said the top general.

In addition to all these threats, he said, Iran has faced another front in Syria in recent years.

“Takfiris backed by hegemonic powers and Saudi Arabia attacked Iraq and Syria, and if they hadn’t been stopped, they would have left behind no trace of Damascus, Karbala, Najaf and Shiites. However, the Islamic Republic of Iran got engaged in defending holy shrines by taking on an advisory role,” he said.

“We assumed an advisory role in Syria and Iraq at the request of their governments, not like the Americans and others who entered those countries without permission,” he said.

He then stressed that the IRGC will avenge the killing of martyr Hojaji.

“It’s not necessary to say how we will take revenge, but our objective is to take vengeance and we are determined to do it,” the commander emphasized.
