Iranian Designer Talks of Her Collaboration with FIFA World Cup Google Doodle

Kheiriyeh was born in 1979 in Iran’s southern city of Khorramshahr in Khuzestan province. She was just 9 months when the war between Iran and Iraq forced her family to move to Tehran.

She started painting at the age of 16 when she enrolled at high school to study graphics, and is still a painter now that she is teaching at the University of Maryland.

In Iran, in addition to designing the famous animation characters of Shekarestan (a popular animation series in Iran), she has created many illustrations and received numerous international and domestic awards. But her name was heard after her collaboration with Google for FIFA 2018 World Cup.

Rashin graduated from the Al-Zahra University in Tehran with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in graphics, and moved to the United States in 2011 to take a 6-month course of painting and hand-printing at the New York University Institute of Fine Arts.

In an Interview with Jame’e No, she has talked about her career. “I’ve been drawing illustrations for books for 20 years. About 30 books of mine have been published in Iran. I have published the same number of books through international publications.”

“After my immigration, I have published 10 more. I have collaborated with numerous publishers in France, Italy, Japan, Korea, China, India, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, etc. My first book after immigration was Two Parrots (a personal recount of the story of Rumi’s The Merchant and the Parrot). I wrote the story and did the illustrations.”

“I also drew the illustrations of the book Ramadan, published by famous Simon & Schuster Publications. The most recent book of mine is Saffron Ice Cream which was published by the publisher of Harry Potter series, Scholastic Co.”

Rashin Kheiriyeh is one of the 32 graphic designers that Google has received help from in designing the doodles of the national football teams attending the FIFA World Cup. These designs were unveiled last week with the start of the World Cup in Russia, and afterwards Rashin’s name was heard very much in the social media, especially among Persian speakers.

Deformed characters and exaggerated figures are a hallmark of Rashin’s designs that could also be seen in her work for Google.

“The deformity of the human and animal figure makes the work comic. My audiences are mostly children. I like children to laugh and rejoice by seeing my designs in story books. The simpler the layout, the more it remains in the minds of the children,” she noted.

Cooperation with Google

On her collaboration with Google she says, “A few months ago, I received an email from Google asking for cooperation for the World Cup. They said they should first sign a confidentiality contract. Then, they contacted me and said they wanted to work with 32 graphic artists and illustrators from 32 countries to design special logos for the teams at the FIFA 2018 World Cup. In their emails, they explained that we should show a combination of football and the culture of each country. They did not want the designs to be very traditional. I created a lot of draft designs and tried to use Islamic designs and flowers and birds that are well-known Iranian symbols. I also used Iranian symbols on the shirts of the characters and on the ball. I designed the football field in a village with cozy homes where women and children were cheering. I also added a Persian cat, which is my signature in my works.”

In response to a question about  women’s presence in her works she replied, “Basically, as I wanted to show Iranian women and their interest in football, I had to remove the stadium. Because women in Iran are not allowed to go to the stadiums. If I had shown them in the stadium, it would have been a bigger mistake. And if there was a stadium without women, it was not logical. As a result, I took the football field to an Iranian village so that women could be shown in it. Except for the players who should be male, the number of spectators is equal in terms of gender.”

Rashin believes that as her illustrations for the children’s books were well received at the international level and appreciated by the critics of the children’s books, Google has selected her. “They were looking for some artists who could showcase their traditional and modern culture,” she underlined.

“In fact, I am the only graphic artist that designed the logo using a paintbrush. The others had designed it digitally. I think that’s why they selected my work to be shown on their Instagram page.”

This Iranian artists further mentioned that her colleagues at Google welcomed the project and said if the Iranian national team can advance to the next stage, Google would ask her to submit a new design.

“I really hope to see Team Melli in the next stage. That’s because of the Iranian people and especially my dad. My dad is watching football every day. His craze for football is unbelievable. I dedicate this painting to my father.”

Iran’s Beauties in Photos: Larzaneh Village

This region’s cold climate makes the village almost uninhabitable in the winter, but the village is a hot tourist attraction during the summer.

Iranians Think Europe, US Playing Good Cop/ Bad Cop: Araqchi

In an address to the second Iran-Europe Cooperation Conference in Brussels on Thursday, Araqchi urged the European sides of the JCPOA to make further efforts to gain the confidence of the Iranian nation.

“Iranians say the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal is part of a good cop/bad cop game played with Iran by the US and the EU (with Trump playing the bad cop),” he was quoted as saying by IRNA.

With the theme of New Horizon, the two-day conference which began on Thursday is mainly focused on exploring ways to counter the Iranophobia project after the US unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal back in May.

The participants of the conference also discuss bilateral cooperation in the areas of technology, energy, national resources and so on.

The first Iran-Europe cooperation conference was held in Vienna in 2015.

The conference provides the two sides with a chance to bring together high-level decision-making leaders and business executives from Iran and Europe to exchange views on various issues.

Araqchi and Iran’s Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari are two keynote speakers from Iran in the conference. They are also set to hold talks with officials in Belgium and European Union.

The US decision to unilaterally pull out of the Iran nuclear deal has sparked harsh reactions from the remaining sides of the deal. Tehran has called on the European sides of the deal to guarantee that Iran can reap the full benefits of the deal or the country will leave the JCPOA soon.

Iran against Boost in OPEC Crude Oil Output: Minister

“At this juncture, we are against an increase in production, as there is no imbalance in the market,” Fars News Agency quoted Bijan Zanganeh as saying on Thursday in Vienna, where he is supposed to attend the 7th International Seminar of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

The meeting will be held Friday and Saturday, when OPEC oil ministers are expected to discuss relaxing production cuts, first agreed nearly two years ago amid a global supply glut.

The alliance is facing pressure from outside to decease oil prices. Worried about the impact of gasoline prices on US mid-term Congress elections, the US administration is lobbying hard for a surge in production.

President Donald Trump has personally criticized the OPEC on his Twitter account, calling on the organization not to allow an increase in oil prices.

Referring to Trump’s calls, Zanganeh said it is the US who is to blame for the increase, not OPEC.

The minister said the recent increase in global oil prices results from political tensions, particularly those that erupted in the wake of a decision by Trump to walk out of the 2015 nuclear deal.

“OPEC is an international organization involving 14 members and does not take orders,” Zanganeh said, adding that the organization ought not to talk about an output increase in this meeting.

The US pulled out of the 2015 nuclear pact early March, pledging to impose “the highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

The return of US sanctions could prompt international oil firms working with Iran to get out of the country, hurting the development of Iran’s oil and gas fields.

Notably, French energy giant Total has pulled out of Iran following the US decision.

17 Iranian Sailors Held by Somalia Return Home

In a Thursday statement, Qassemi said the Iranian sailors were released thanks to the hard efforts and arrangements made by the Iranian Foreign Ministry over the past months.

According to Qassemi, the sailors were on a fishing boat when they were arrested by Somalia forces for illegally trespassing into the African country’s water last year. Each of them was sentenced to two years in jail and paying a fine by a local court in Somalia.

“The sailors were flown to the Islamic Republic after being transported to Nairobi and delivered to Iran’s embassy in Kenya,” he said.

Qassemi said upon their arrival at Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, the Iranian sailors were warmly welcomed by Hossein Panahi-Azar, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, as well as a number of other officials.

Their release came about two weeks after four Iranian fishermen taken captive by pirates in international waters near Somalia were released by Iran’s intelligence forces. Iranian intelligence agents secured the fishermen’s release through a long process and despite tight security controls by the pirates.

The fishermen were all Sunni Muslims from the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan. They had been held by pirates since 2015.

All papers today covered a meeting between the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and members of the Iranian Parliament. The Leader’s call on the Parliament to pass domestic laws against money laundering and terrorism, instead of approving the country’s accession to FATF or CFT, made the headlines today.

The top story, however, was the brilliant performance of the Iranian national football team, which lost its second FIFA World Cup match against Spain 1-0. Several papers also highlighted the historic presence of women at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium who watched Iran-Spain match along with fellow male fans.

The US withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council in support of the Israeli regime also received great coverage today.

Iranian Women, Real Winners of Iran-Spain Match in FIFA World Cup

Last night, the Iranian national football team showed a heroic performance against Spain, but was defeated by former world champions 1-0 in their second FIFA World Cup match.

The match turned into a historic one for Iranians not just for Team Melli’s brilliant performance, but for the fact that football fans, male and female alike, enjoyed the World Cup viewing at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran for the first time in 40 years.

The Iranian women were widely seen by many, including Spain’s defender Sergio Ramos, as the real winners of the match.

Iranian Women, Real Winners of Iran-Spain Match in FIFA World CupLast week, it was announced that Azadi Sports Complex was ready to give Iranian families the chance to watch the match against Morocco live on a JumboTron.

However, the required licences were not issued for that match, which ended with a sweet 1-0 victory for Iran.

Later on Tuesday, the office of the Governor-General of Tehran Province declared that the permission has been issued and all fans, boys and girls, can go to the stadium to watch the match against Spain.

Thousands of tickets were sold and fans poured into the stadium, but a few hours before the match, the police said the event is cancelled and tried to close the doors and evacuate the stadium.

The move sparked outrage among the fans and social media users, and after a few hours of tension, finally Iranian President Hassan Rouhani ordered the Interior Minister to immediately open the doors and let the fans watch the match.

What follows is Ruptly’s video of the men and women who enjoyed the historic night in Tehran:

World Praises Iran for ‘Heroic’ Performance against Spain despite Narrow Loss

Iran and Spain rounded off Matchday 2 in Group B, with La Roja securing a 1-0 win to record their first victory at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.

Iran fought a valiant battle in Kazan to maintain hopes of qualifying for the last 16. Despite dominating possession, Spain were unable to forge any clear cut openings as an iron-willed Iranian XI camped on the edge of their box, giving them plenty of positives to take into their next game against Portugal on June 25.

Fernando Hierro made two changes to Spain’s starting line-up following their opening match against Portugal, as Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez respectively replaced Nacho and Koke.

However, the Iberians struggled to break down a reshuffled Iranian defence that included Majid Hosseini in place of the injured Roozbeh Cheshmi. Indeed, Spain’s first clear opening did not arrive until around the half-hour mark, when David Silva went close with a sideways scissor kick, before narrowly missing the target again just before the break with a deflected shot.

The second half started brightly and Gerard Pique, earning his 100th cap for Spain, had a chance from a corner before Sergio Busquets tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area.

Team Melli had a sight of goal at the other end of the pitch in the 53rd minute, but Karim Ansarifard’s shot could only brush the side netting.

Spain took the lead with their next attack a minute later, the ball ricocheting into the net off Diego Costa, who registered his third goal in two matches. The Atletico Madrid striker required another stroke of luck on 54 minutes when his shot came off Ramin Rezaeian to beat Beiranvand after he had been sent through by Andres Iniesta.

Iran grew more adventurous after falling behind and Mehdi Taremi almost levelled matters with a header that flew just over.

The entire Iranian bench poured onto the pitch when Saeed Ezatollahi fired an equalizer for Team Melli just before the hour. But the thousands of Iranian supporters that filled the stadium with the sound of vuvuzelas were left disappointed when it was ruled out for offside.

World Praises Iran for ‘Heroic’ Performance against Spain despite Narrow LossIran initially set out to sit deep and play on the counter but were forced to change their tactics after Spain scored. They created a number of chances but were unable to convert any, leaving them ruing a dropped point.

Spain, on the other hand, picked up a narrow win before going into their final Group B fixture against Morocco. Hierro’s charges went up against a well-organised side with a solid backline, but took all three points thanks to their experienced midfielders.

Iran Still Alive

Iran’s Portuguese head coach Carlos Queiroz said after the match, “We showed that we were ready to suffer and ready to compete. I felt we deserved a better result. There’s no doubt Spain play wonderful, stylish football but I thought we deserved more for the way we played.”

“But congratulations to Fernando Hierro and Spain. We will learn a lot from this game. If you think of it like tennis, we had one match point today and we will have another against Portugal. Everything is still open. We are still alive and still dreaming.”

Admired for Superb Performance

Following the match, almost all Iranian fans were pleased with Team Melli’s great performance, and were even saddened by the loss, which was not that much surprising.

Social media users were particularly delighted by Vahid Amiri’s move to nutmeg Barcelona’s defender Gerard Pique, and even called it a victory for Iran against Spain. Many memes and jokes were posted on the social media mocking the Spanish defender for being dribbled by the Iranian midfielder.

Also a subject for meme was the strange way in which Iranian defender Milad Mohammadi tried to throw the ball in the last minutes of the match.

Apart from the jokes, fans and football experts across the world praised the way Iran played against the giant Spain. BBC Sport’s pundit Chris Sutton wrote about the match, “Iran are what the World Cup is all about: pride, passion and drive. Spain got lucky.”

“Iran can beat the Portugal one-man band. Queiroz against his old team… great game in prospect! Come on Iran!” he added.

Italy’s legendary player Alessandro Del Piero also praised the Iranians for their “heroic” performance, saying that Team Melli defended in a way as if there will be no tomorrow.

“Negotiating with US after Its Exit from Nuclear Deal Humiliating for Iran”

Gholam-Reza Mesbahi-Moqaddam, a senior conservative politician, has referred to a recent letter by a number of reformists and political activists asking to hold direct and unconditional talks with the United States, and said, “Negotiating with the United States at present and after the unilateral withdrawal of the country from the nuclear deal is a kind of humiliation.”

“If the US were to negotiate wisely, the same talks on nuclear deal could have been satisfactory. The JCPOA was a test of US commitment to its words,” he added, speaking in an interview with Fars News Agency.

Their request to hold direct talks with the United States does not have any intellectual and rational basis. Considering the current situation and the US stance towards our country such a proposal is not realistic, Mesbahi-Moqaddam stated.

A group of Iranian political activists signed a letter addressed to high-ranking Tehran officials last Sunday, demanding them to hold direct negotiations with the US to resolve the standoff over the nuclear deal, warning them against what they called the loss of an important opportunity.

The letter said that holding talks could protect Iran’s national interests as well as solve some of its problems.

Signatories included former Mayor of Tehran Gholam-Hossein Karbaschi, reformist figure Hamid Assefi, Ayatollah Montazeri’s son Ahmed Montazeri, and Jamileh Kadivar, among others.
