Communication Balloons to be Launched Across Iran

Rahim Ehsani said a new plan to design and produce at least 20 communication balloons is about to be implemented, to provide the country with communication and monitoring services in emergency conditions.

“The project is part of a lager plan called Space Ship, which aims at enabling communication, monitoring and photography applications,” he was quoted as saying in an interview with ISNA.

According to Ehsani, the Space Ship project is accomplished within a new mission named “Stratospheric Platform”, which refers to a platform with a higher height than planes and lower than space.

Elaborating on the platform, he said there are two types of the platforms: fixed and changing.

“In the earlier communication balloon project, each balloon was capable of carrying 50 km cargoes at 500 meter height.”

He noted the balloons offer WiFi services to the users and added that last year, during Arba’een pilgrimage, Iran deployed a balloon near its border with Iraq as part of a new project to provide free Wi-Fi internet service for the pilgrims.

Arba’een services were offered after the balloon was successful tested in the quake-hit areas of the western province of Kermanshah.

Ehsani said that at the order of Iran’s Communication and Information Technology Ministry, all provinces across the country are to be equipped with the communication balloons for emergency uses.

“To this end, at least 20 balloons are set to be designed and produced within next year,” he said.

Elsewhere, Ehsani said, each balloon is capable of carrying 300kg cargos and covering a 10 to 15 km radius.

“In the previous project, each balloon could offer services up to 5 km. But in the new project, the radius has increased to 15 km,” he added.

The official said Space Ship project is a strategic 10-year-old plan which is set to establish a space ship in a 20 km height in the next ten years.

He noted that the ship can move to a 400 km height at a speed of 200 km/h.

Palestinians Would Shape Government in Tel Aviv: Iranian Leader

“The Palestinian people’s victory in recent years has not had the meaning of capability to establish a government in Tel Aviv, but this will also materialize by God’s grace,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in a meeting with Secretary General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance movement Ziad al-Nakhala in Tehran on Monday.

The Leader said Palestine’s true victory is the fact that while the Arab armies have been unable to defeat the Zionist regime, the Palestinian people and the resistance groups have brought Israel to its knees.

“You will win even greater victories by God’s grace,” Ayatollah Khamenei told Nakhala.

The Leader explained that a clear principle in Palestine’s encounter with Israel is that resistance leads to victory.

During the previous wars against the Palestinian resistance groups, the Zionist regime called for a ceasefire after 22 days and another time after 8 days, but in the latest conflict, Tel Aviv called for ceasefire after just 48 hours, Ayatollah Khamenei noted, saying it means that “the occupying Zionist regime has been brought to its knees.”

“Fortitude and resistance have been the reason for the constant victories of the Palestinian nation in recent years, and in future, as long as the resistance exists, the process of decline of the Zionist regime will continue,” the Leader underlined.

Ayatollah Khamenei also stressed that the heavy pressures from the arrogant powers will never discourage Iran from supporting Palestine on the basis of its divine, religious and rational duty.

‘Europe Showed Weakness in Resisting US Pressure’

Speaking in a regular press briefing on Monday, Bahram Qassemi said Europe has showed political will to protect JCPOA, but when it came to actions, they proved they can’t resist the US pressure and failed to honor their commitments in time.

“During the talks, some realities showed themselves. Issues such as complexity of the mechanism and the extreme pressure placed by the US on Europeans made the talks time-consuming,” he said, adding that the economic hegemony of the US was another factor at play.

However, Qassemi said Iran is not yet disappointed with Europe and is continuing talks with its European partners on SPV.

“We will continue negotiations and we hope Europe would pass this test, as Europe’s failure in resisting US pressure would lead to more pressure,” he said.

SPV is a mechanism aimed at facilitating trade with Iran at a time when the US has reinstated anti-Iran sanctions suspended under the nuclear accord.

Iranian officials for month have been lamenting about Europe’s delay in fulfilling commitments.

In November, Araqchi said the EU has shown unable or unwilling to establish the mechanism, warning Iran could not keep up fulfilling its JCPOA commitments in such circumstances

Bahram Qassemi

The announcement was made by Bahram Qassemi in a regular press briefing in Tehran on Monday, shortly after Iran admitted it has engaged in talks with the group, ISNA reported.

Shamkhani, who was speaking during a visit to Kabul, also said the talks will continue in the near future.

The news came out follows talks last week between the US and Taliban officials in the United Arab Emirates.

The Taliban announced they have also held meetings with officials from the UAE, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Qassemi said Araqchi would visit Afghanistan in the upcoming days, in a visit aimed at boosting economic cooperation between the two countries and following up on a document for strategic cooperation, which has been in the making for months.

UK Has No Option But to Repay Iran’s Longstanding Debt

“The English government has for 40 years dragged its feet over resolving the debt to the Iranian people. The case is going through the legal process and we have achieved good results,” Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

Speaking to Hamshahri daily in an interview published on Monday, Zarif said the English government can no longer delay the settlement and it has no option but to pay their debt to the Iranian people.

The £450m debt by the UK is related to 1974 and 1976 arms deal, under which Iran’s shah bought hundreds of Chieftain tanks and other military vehicles from a British state-run firm.

Britain received an advance payment from Iran and delivered some tanks in the next few years, but it stopped adhering to its commitments after the Islamic Revolution of 1979 that brought down the US-backed monarch.

After the revolution, the British firm even sold a part of Iran’s order to the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Afterwards, Iran lodged a complaint to the International Court of Arbitration in the Hague, who found the British side guilty for failing to fulfil its commitments 2001.

Too Soon to Predict Changes in Saudi Policy

Asked about his view on the replacement of Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, Zarif said it too soon for a predication on whether the change would affect misguided policies of Saudi Arabia in the region.

“Time is not ripe for such a prediction. There are signals against [change in Saudi policy]. We should wait to see,” he said.

Zarif said Iran is ready to welcome such a change in the Saudi policy, as it’s never late for the country to correct mistakes.

“It would be to the benefit of Saudi Arabia, the region and the world if there are changes in Saudi Arabia’s foreign policy and the country’s policy is shaped based on realities,” he said.

Last week, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman replaced al-Jubier with former finance minister Ibrahim al-Assaf in a royal decree.

Ayatollah Amoli Larijani Appointed Head of Iran’s Expediency Council

In a decree on Sunday, the Leader said he has appointed Ayatollah Amoli Larijani as the head of the Expediency Council given the leading role of the body in running the Islamic establishment’s affairs and following the passing away of its former head, Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, earlier this week.

Ayatollah Khamenei expressed hope that the Expediency Council’s responsibilities would be firmly handled under Ayatollah Amoli Larijani’s supervision.

The Leader also urged Ayatollah Amoli Larijani to fully focus on his important duties and get established in his new position as soon as possible.

Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi passed away on Monday at the age of 70 after months of suffering acute ill health.
