US Policies in Gross Violation of NPT: Iran

Making the remarks in the high-level plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests on Sep. 9, Majid Takht-Ravanchi said that the latest Nuclear Proliferation Report (NPR) has found that the United States is disinclined to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and that it “will resume nuclear explosive testing, … including underground nuclear explosive testing.”

“This policy is in gross violation of its explicit legal obligations under the NPT and the unequivocal commitments it has assumed in Review Conferences of the Treaty,” he said.

Here is the full text of the Iranian envoy’s statement:

Madam President

I thank you for convening this meeting to commemorate the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.

I would also like to commend the efforts of Kazakhstan in proposing and promoting this initiative.

Observance of this international day continuously reminds us of the need for a complete ban on any and all types of nuclear explosions.

This day’s commemoration will be incomplete if we do not recall the fact that most of the nuclear tests’ victims have not been the citizens of countries that have undertaken nuclear tests.

We should also recall the destructive environmental effects of such tests, most of which have been carried out outside the territory of countries conducting them.

Commemorating this day also provides us with an opportunity to review progress made in achieving a universal ban on nuclear explosions and the broader objective of nuclear disarmament.

While we made certain progress in the past, unfortunately, currently there are two alarming races: new nuclear arms race and nuclear arms modernization race.

At a time when certain nuclear-weapon States have plans to develop new easy-to-use nuclear weapons, ending nuclear weapon test explosions is of utmost importance.

However, while nuclear-weapon States have the primary responsibility to that end, regrettably, some of them are responsible for the current situation.

The living example is the US that, according to its latest NPR, not only, “will not seek ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty” but also “will resume nuclear explosive testing, … including underground nuclear explosive testing.”

This policy is in gross violation of its explicit legal obligations under the NPT and the unequivocal commitments it has assumed in Review Conferences of the Treaty.

Such irresponsible policies, the latest of which is the US withdrawal from the INF Treaty, are detrimental to all international efforts towards nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and therefore must come to an end.

Current situation testifies that, no matter how important the voluntary moratoria on nuclear tests are, they cannot substitute for a comprehensive universal and verifiable legally-binding prohibition on all types of nuclear explosions, including in alternative ways.

Through observing this day, we should also redouble our efforts in pursuing the noble objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons: the only absolute guarantee against the threat or use of these inhumane weapons.

This is essential for the maintenance of peace and security, in particular in such a volatile region as the Middle East where the Israeli nuclear weapons continue to threaten the peace and security of the region and beyond.

Total elimination of these inhumane weapons is what we owe to ourselves, to our children, to generations to come and to entire humanity.

This is a moral imperative and an explicit responsibility. Let’s remain united, resolute and steadfast and fulfill this responsibility collectively and responsibly.

Iran stands ready to play its role in pursuing this noble objective.

I thank you Madam President

Tourists Flock to Yazd to Attend Muharram Mourning Ritual

People of Yazd have been performing the centuries-old ritual of mourning Imam Hussein’s martyrdom anniversary so impressively that foreign tourists have begun to arrange trips to the ancient city in the lunar calendar month of Muharram.

The number of foreign tourists visiting Yazd during Muharram has increased so sharply in recent years that local authorities have organized plans to introduce the religious rites and facilitate access to the sites where the mourning ceremonies take place.

An official with the secretariat of a forum called “Yazd: Iran’s Husseiniya” has told IRNA that more than 1,000 tourists are expected to take part in this year’s ritual ceremonies in Yazd.

Husseiniya is a congregation hall for religious ceremonies in commemoration of the Shiite Imams, particularly Imam Hussein.

According to Alireza Mirjalili, foreigners from around 30 countries have visited mosques, husseiniyas and other sites to observe the performance of rites since September 1, the beginning of Muharram.

He also noted that a number of Iranian clerics speaking foreign languages are available in major tourist attractions, such as the Amir Chakhmaq Mosque and the Grand Mosque, to deal with inquiries about the mourning ceremonies, the philosophy of Ashura, and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his companions in in 681 AD.

Located in the central Iranian plateau, Yazd is known for developing an underground water system centuries ago, its traditional Persian architecture, fascinating mosques, and Zoroastrian temples.

Also known as the world’s first adobe city, Yazd has given the UNESCO a commitment to promote construction of adobe buildings and structures both inside the city and in other parts of the world.

Israel Real Nuke Possessor ‘Crying Wolf’ for Iran: Zarif

US Known It Can’t Trigger Snapback Mechanism: Zarif

Netanyahu claimed on Monday that the Islamic Republic had carried out alleged activity at a place, which he claimed used to be situated south of the central Iranian city of Isfahan, towards obtaining nuclear arms. Without providing further details or specifying when such supposed practice had gone underway, he went on to allege that Iranian officials “wiped out” the putative center after it was discovered by Israel agents.

“The possessor of REAL nukes cries wolf—on an ALLEGED “demolished” site in Iran,” Zarif tweeted later in reaction.

He was pointing to multiple reports and accounts by reputed personalities identifying Israel as the only possessor of nuclear arms in the Middle East. Those evidence include The Sunday Times’ historic report of 1986 that first broke the story on tip-off from former Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu, and former US president Jimmy Carter’s similarly head-turning revelation that the occupying regime was in possession of hundreds of nuclear warheads.

Zarif incorporated The Sunday Times’ front page in his tweet, and said through his accusations, the Israeli premier was mindlessly trying to foment a war against Iran as part of the “B-Team.”

The hawkish group referred to as such by Iran’s foreign minister is also comprised of US National Security Adviser John Bolton, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The top diplomat has repeatedly condemned the foursome for their efforts to subject Iran to economic terrorism and bring about military aggression targeting the Islamic Republic.

“He & B-Team just want a war,” Zarif said, “no matter innocent blood & another $7 TRILLION,” referring to the amount Washington has admitted to spending in the Middle East and Central Asia towards military operations.

Zarif finally recalled Netanyahu’s remarks back in 2002, during which the Israeli premier promoted a US-led military aggression against Iraq by claiming that it would hugely benefit the region.

The United States led its allies in the invasion a year later. The war was ensued by devastating sectarian conflict and chaos in the Arab country and elsewhere in the region. The tumultuous aftermath also paved the way for emergence of Takfiri terrorists in the region.

“Remember his “GUARANTEE” of “positive reverberations” in ’02?” the tweet read, and also incorporated a video of Netanyahu’s giving the pledge.

“This time, he assuredly won’t be on the sidelines watching,” Zarif concluded, suggesting that the Israeli politician was trying to engulf the region in another destructive conflict.

Iran Says to Counter Any Disruption of Cooperation with IAEA

IAEA

Kazem Gharibabadi also dismissed any attempt to pressure the IAEA over its cooperation with Iran.

“Any effort to disrupt and divert constructive and active cooperation between Iran and the agency and to exert unwarranted pressure on the agency are completely destructive and will be followed by Iran’s due measures,” said Gharibabadi.

He further said Washington has no jurisdiction over the IAEA as it does not belong to the US government.

“The agency is not a US-affiliated institution, so that [US National Security Advisor John] Bolton cannot set an agenda for the visits and trips by its officials,” he said.

The official noted that the trip to Iran by IAEA Acting Director General Cornel Feruta was within the framework of usual interactions and cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.

He rejected any claims of covert nuclear activities by Iran, adding, “There was no specific agenda for this visit as Bolton wished.”

“Naturally, during this visit, the two sides discussed cooperation in the fields of verification, the Additional Protocol and the comprehensive Safeguards Agreement,” he said.

Int’l Coalition Launched to Tackle Dust Storms

The coalition was established in coordination with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in line with the resolutions of the UN General Assembly.

It was formally launched in the fourteenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP14) in New Delhi. The coalition includes several specialized organizations of the UN.

The executive secretary of the New Delhi event said in a speech that “today, we are engaged in a relentless fight against one of the most challenging and destructive environmental phenomena. He said the need to tackle this problem which has gripped 151 countries in Asia, Africa, North America and Australia has come under the spotlight on the world stage.

This global coalition has been established based on three resolutions of the UN General Assembly as well as the resolutions of UNEP and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on combating dust storms. The coalition aims to boost international cooperation in fighting dust storms, mobilize financial resources to contribute to that cooperation, bring about synergy among countries and specialized organizations involved in fighting dust storms, develop warning systems, detecting the root causes of these sand storms and cushion the effects of those storms on public health, the environment and economic activities based on a global action plan.

Iranian Family Making ‘Alamat’ for Generations

The “Hosseini Bros.” workshop has been making Alamats for about 70 years. Many old people involved in holding ritual mourning ceremonies in honour of Imam Hussein (PBUH) recall that the Hosseinis established one of the first Alamat-making workshops in capital Tehran decades ago.

The business booms every year in the lunar calendar month of Muharram.

Craftsmen making Alamat usually engrave the phrase Allahu Akbar (an Islamic phrase meaning God is the greatest) on the crests of its metal blades, and decorate the other parts with inscriptions from the verses of Quran, the Arabic attributes of God, Shiite prayers paying tribute to Imam Hussein, and with the names or even drawings of the Shiite Imams.

The artisans use various methods to engrave words or pictures on the metal blades, such as pressing silver, toreutics, or pickling with acid.

Alamat is a large and heavy metal banner with multiple blades that is carried in religious processions, particularly in the mourning ceremonies of Muharram.

What follows are photos of the workshop and the Alamats retrieved from the Azad News Agency (ANA):

Iran Develops Nano Iron Supplements

One of the problems of iron supplements is that they blacken the teeth and result in digestive disorders, among other side effects.

However, an Iranian company has developed a liposome-based nano iron supplement which has no negative effect on the digestive system and does not blacken the teeth, either. Liposome has a spherical microscopic structure surrounded by a phospholipid membrane. Because of the hollow space inside the liposome, it is possible to carry medicines and nutritious compounds with this structure.

“Some children use iron-enriched supplements in order to meet their daily need for iron. These supplements have problems such as blackening the teeth,” said Arsalan Pashapour, the managing director of the company developing the nano supplement.

“We made a suspension containing iron-enriched nano liposome compounds which do not blacken teeth as they contain liposomes. Moreover, this supplement does not affect the digestive system and does not have the digestive disorders commonly caused by iron supplements,” he added.

He said one of the attractive features of the newly-developed supplement is that it has a nano structure, which increases the degree of absorption.

“In fact, this supplement has two features. It contains liposome, which prevents teeth from going black and makes the supplement compatible with the digestive system; moreover, it is a nano product, which helps increase the degree to which compounds are absorbed by the body,” he added.

“In addition to iron, this supplement also contains folic acid and vitamin B12. This is while similar foreign products made with liposomal technology only contain iron,” he noted.

Pashapour also touched upon other advantages of this supplement.

“Among other benefits of this technology is that it is a suspension while foreign-made ones come in the form of powder and need to be mixed with water to turn into a suspension before use,” he said.

Pashapour believes the supplement can also be exported, saying the company will make plans to export the product after distributing it across the nation.

This supplement has received the nano scale certificate and is passing through the stages of receiving a production license from the Food and Drug Organization of Iran.

Iran Says Concerned about Situation in Afghanistan

“The Islamic Republic of Iran warns that foreigners and aggressors may cash in on the new situation in this country and trigger a fresh round of killing and bloodshed in Afghanistan,” said the top Iranian diplomat.

“From our standpoint, aggressors and occupiers must concede defeat and leave Afghanistan as soon as possible,” said Zarif.

He said Tehran is urging all sides involved in the conflict to exercise self-restraint.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran calls on all warring sides to exercise restraint, stop fratricide and seriously avoid shedding the blood of innocent people and individuals until a permanent ceasefire and national reconciliation agreement is reached,” he said.

Zarif underlined Iran’s readiness to contribute to efforts aimed at securing a reconciliation accord.

“While respecting Afghanistan’s sovereignty and stressing that any peace process should be owned and directed by Afghan people from all walks of life, the Islamic Republic of Iran stands ready to take part in consultations and discussions with all warring sides in Afghanistan in a regional initiative together with Afghanistan’s neighbours and government as well as all groups in the country in order to stop the shedding of innocent people’s blood and ease the achievement of a lasting agreement, and will spare no sincere and nonpartisan effort in that regard,” he said.

Iran Men’s Basketball Qualifies for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Iran claimed the lone Asian Olympic qualifying spot available at the FIBA World Cup after beating the Philippines 95-75 in Beijing.

Iran could secure its qualification for Tokyo 2020 after China lost to Nigeria 86-73 in its last FIBA World Cup game on Sunday. China will have to go through a qualifying tournament next summer.

This is the third time that Iran’s national basketball team qualifies for the Olympics, after 1948 and 2008, and the first Olympic trip with an Iranian coach, Mehran Shahintab’e.

Iran and Nigeria join Australia and Japan as the first four teams in the 12-team Olympic field for next summer in Tokyo.

Iran’s Oil Tanker Adrian Darya Reaches Destination: Spokesman

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi confirmed on Sunday that Adrian Darya-1, formerly known as Grace-1, has arrived at its destination.

“We had already announced that we determine Adrian Darya’s destination,” he added.

Mousavi noted that the supertanker’s cargo has been sold on the sea and has been delivered at the destination.

The spokesman also noted that the case of a British oil tanker seized by the Iranian naval forces is in the final stages of judicial and legal processes.

On July 4, Britain’s naval forces unlawfully captured Iran’s oil tanker Grace 1 and its cargo in the Strait of Gibraltar under the pretext that it had been suspected of carrying crude to Syria in violation of the European Union’s unilateral sanctions against the Arab country. Tehran condemned London’s move as an act of piracy.

Gibraltar’s government later released the supertanker despite pressure from the US for the vessel’s continued detainment.

On July 19, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy captured Stena Impero, because the UK vessel had switched off its GPS locator, in contravention of international regulations, and was sailing into the Strait of Hormuz in a wrong traffic pattern.

The British tanker was entering the strait from the southern route which is an exit path, increasing the risk of an accident

Iran released the oil tanker’s crew last week.
