‘Luxury Birth Date’ Tragedy Happening Again in Iran as 9/9/99 Looms

Forcing the delivery of babies at a specific time just to have a luxury birth date not only results in the birth of preterm infants, but increases health hazards during the coronavirus pandemic.

It has been years that forcing the delivery of babies on round-figure dates has been all the rage, turning into a serious concern for some families.

Dates such as 7/7/1377, 8/8/1388, etc. on the Iranian calendar are among the days on which many would like to have their children born and they pay colossal sums of money for that. The move could result in the birth of babies with deformities.

This has even drawn reaction from some officials.

“Unfortunately, the number of caesarean deliveries considerably increases, by dozens of percentage points up to multiple times as high, at some private hospitals on certain dates and occasions at the request of some families and due to some physicians accepting their request,” Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi had said before.

“Tampering with the date of birth blows the most severe blow to the infant because the extent of growth and brain development is at its highest during the last three months of pregnancy. This is while caesarean sections are usually performed one week earlier than the date the baby is due. So, the infant will be deprived of one golden week when the development of his or her brain and lungs is completed, and sometimes the infant is born with pulmonary infection and malfunction,” the top official added.

Deputy Health Minister for Health Affairs Alireza Raisi had also weighed in on the issue before.

“Tampering with the dates of deliveries will raise the number of infants kept at neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and even increase infant mortality, and families should be prevented from doing this,” Raisi had already said.

Health Ministry’s Ultimatum

Tampering with the dates of deliveries has become so widespread that it has turned into a serious concern for the health ministry as an increase in the number of “luxury birth date” deliveries over the past few years runs counter to the health ministry’s programs and executive policies to promote natural childbirth and reduce the number elective caesarean births.

This year, concerns have grown amid the coronavirus pandemic. Accordingly, with the date 9/9/1399 on the Iranian calendar (corresponding to November 29, 2020) approaching, Deputy Health Minister for Treatment Qassem Janbabaei, in an official notice, demanded hospitals and doctors present a report on their performance with regards to elective caesarean births on special dates. He also demanded hospitals and doctors with high records of “unmanaged” caesarean deliveries to be dealt with.

This year, 9/9/1399 on the Iranian calendar coincides with days when coronavirus infections and deaths are fast rising in the country, and hospitals are facing problems such as shortages of beds, oxygen, etc. Although several maternity hospitals do not admit coronavirus patients, there are hospitals which admit them along with other patients.

Childbirths on luxury dates increase work pressure on hospitals on those dates. Under such circumstances, preterm infants face more health risks.

Birth Certificates with Round-Figure Date of Issue

A spokesperson for the State Civil Registration Organization has urged parents to care about their children’s health rather than them being born on round-figure dates.

“It is possible to issue birth certificates with round-figure dates for all infants born from November 21 to December 5, 2020,” said Seyfollah Torabi.

“9/9/1399 can be registered as the date of issue on the birth certificate even if the date of birth is not the same date registered by the hospital,” he said.

He noted if parents would like the birth certificates of their children to bear 9/9/1399 as the date of issue, the Civil Registration Organization will have no problem with that as long as the baby is born from Nov. 21 to Dec. 5.

Iran Reserves Right to Give ‘Crushing Response’ to Scientist’s Killing

In a post on his Twitter account, Ali Rabiei noted the response will be in line with the country’s national interests.

“The Iranian nation reserves the right to give a crushing response based on a specific strategy to ensure national interests and dignity,” he said, adding perpetrators will definitely be punished.

Rabiei said terrorist enemies pursue several objectives given the developments over the recent months.

He said they want to disrupt the [Iranian] society’s psychological calm, create confusion in Iran’s strategy, disrupt regional security and wreck global security given the possible future changes in international policies.

He also expressed condolences to Fakrizadeh’s bereaved family, the Iranian scientific community and people on the loss of the eminent scientist.

No More IAEA Inspection If Acts of Terror Repeated: IRGC General

Iran Sees ‘Positive Outlook’ for Ties with IAEA after Latest Report

Major General Mohsen Rezaei said on Saturday that Iran’s national security should be preserved.

“Don’t allow Iran’s national security to be harmed,” said Rezaei, who is also the secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should lodge a complaint with international circles and remind them that if another minor act of terror is committed, Iran will block international inspectors’ access to its nuclear activities,” he noted.

“It goes without saying that a repeat of such terrorist acts would indicate the weakness of the country’s intelligence agencies, and efforts should be redoubled to prevent such acts of terror,” he said.

In a Saturday statement, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei urged relevant bodies to pursue the issue.

“All relevant authorities should seriously put two key issues on the agenda,” he said in a message.

“First, they should follow up on this crime and mete out definitive punishment for those who perpetrated and ordered it,” said the Leader.

Iran to Respond to Scientist’s Assassination at Right Time: Rouhani

President Hassan Rouhani said Saturday Iran will respond to this terror act at the appropriate time.

“All think tanks and all enemies of Iran should know that Iranian people and officials are so brave that they will not leave this criminal act unanswered,” said the president.

“Relevant authorities will respond to this crime at the right time,” he underscored.

He said the Iranian nation is wise enough not to fall in this Israeli trap.

Eminent Iranian missile and nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated by terrorists in an area to the east of Tehran on November 27, 2020.

Many Iranian authorities say there is ample evidence implicating the Israeli regime’s role in the killing.

Assassination of Fakhrizadeh Not to Disrupt Iran’s Scientific Growth: Rouhani

In a message released on Saturday, President Rouhani paid tribute to Iranian scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was assassinated in a small city near Tehran on Friday afternoon, offering condolences to the late figure’s family, the Iranian scientific society, and the revolutionary Iranian people.

The president said the martyrdom of another Iranian fellow at the “dirty hands of the global arrogance, with the usurper Zionist regime working as its mercenary” made the Iranian nation mourn the loss of a diligent scientist.

“Such terrorist and cowardly incident undoubtedly results from the frustration and inability of the Iranian nation’s sworn enemies in the face of the great Iranian nation’s scientific progress, glories, and capabilities, and from their (enemies’) successive defeats in the region and in other political arenas in the world,” the president added, saying such crime laid bare the depth of the enemies’ viciousness and hostility, just like their other inhumane measures.

President Rouhani then made it clear to the enemies that martyrdom of characters like Fakhrizadeh will not only not disrupt the Iranian scientists’ determination to press on with the rapid scientific progress and winning more glories, but also strengthens their resolve to stick to the path of the late martyr.
The president finally gave an assurance that the Defense Ministry will make up for the loss of the great scientist with increased efforts and altruism and by taking advantage of the late figure’s colleagues and students.

Fakhrizadeh was assassinated by unknown gunmen in a small city east of Tehran on Friday evening.

After sustaining injuries from a car explosion and bullets, Fakhrizadeh was taken to the hospital with a helicopter, but succumbed to injuries a few hours later.

Slain Iranian Scientist Led National Nuclear Defence Program: DM

Brigadier General Amir Hatami said thanks to martyr Fakhrizadeh’s extensive work in this domain, Iran now enjoys the necessary know-how and products in the field of nuclear defence as in other areas of the defence industry.
“He offered outstanding services in this domain,” said the defence chief.

The top commander noted Iran attaches special importance to defence against nuclear, chemical and biological weapons as the country faces serious threats by the enemy in that regard.
“Our enemy is the criminal US, which has carried out the only nuclear attack in the world,” said the top commander.

“Our enemies are those who supplied arms to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, whose regime conducted the most extensive chemical attacks against us, our troops, our people and even their own people,” he added.

“So, chemical, nuclear and biological defence is a very important and up-to-date issue in the defence ministry and in the Armed Forces,” added the general.

Civil Service Institutions Closed in Iran for One Week to Contain COVID-19

All civil servants will stay off their jobs unless deemed necessary to be present at workplace.
“As of Saturday, government institutions will be closed for a week unless their presence at workplace is deemed necessary by authorities,” said Jamshid Ansari, the head of the Administrative and Recruitment Affairs Organization.

“We urge everyone to seriously act upon this order and we want people to delay their administrative work for two weeks in order to help cut off the chain of the COVID-19 infection,” he said.

“Those who are present at work at the municipality are the ones offering urban services. Non-essential administrative departments will remain closed,” he said.

He also called on people to reduce travel within cities.

The new restriction comes as Iran remains under a partial lockdown, which began on November 21, 2020.

Under the plan, non-essential businesses remain closed and private vehicles are not allowed on the streets from 9 pm to 4 am.
