Number of Tourists Visiting Iran Increases by 56%

“The visit of foreign nationals and tourists to Iran has increased by 56 percent comparing to the same period last year,” Leyla Azhdari told ISNA on Saturday.

The official said Iraq is the top source of tourists coming to Iran, with over 2.2 million Iraqi citizens traveling to Iran in this period.

Azerbaijan and Afghanistan hold the second and third ranks, with 1.3 million and 0.7 million visitors, she added.

More US Tourists in Iran

Azhdari noted the number of European visitors visiting Iran has decreased compared to last year, but the number of American tourists has increased.

“In this period, 1980 US tourists visited Iran, which means an 82% growth,” she underlined.

The slide in Europeans’ visit to Iran comes despite efforts by Iran to relax the process of obtaining visas.

Late last year, Iran announced it will not stamp visas on the passports of European visitors, as it might complicate obtaining US visas in the future.

Iran is home to plenty of historical landmarks and enjoys a rich culture, but its tourism sector remains relatively underdeveloped.

Officials believe tourism may worth a lot to the economy via creating jobs and boosting economic growth in the country.

Iran’s Not Joining FATF Detrimental: Official

Foreign Ministry Condemns FATF’s Blacklisting of Iran

The remark was made by Pedram Soltani, the vice chairman of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce.

“Under the current circumstances, in order to be able to keep open our banking and financial channel with the European Union and China and all countries that are willing to buy petroleum from us, Iran’s monetary and banking transactions need to be recognised as low-risk transactions,” Soltani told khabaronline.

“Otherwise, costs will rise so much that they will impede monetary and banking transactions to a great extent,” he added.

“On the other hand, as we are under the pressure of sanctions, and this pressure could increase or have unpredictable consequences in the future, which we are not aware of at the moment, so we should manage [the country’s] economy in such a way that it remains transparent on the domestic front,” he said.

The official noted that fighting money laundering will benefit domestic economy, people, healthy enterprises and the government.

He said fighting money laundering will increase the government’s income.

“A major part of this rise in the government’s revenues comes from the prevention of tax evasion,” Soltani added.

He said those opposing Iran’s accession to the FATF see the “empty half” of the government’s performance.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Soltani touched upon the United States’ sanctions against Iran, and added negotiations will not help settle this problem

So, he added, the right strategy would be to make decisions to improve the country’s economy.

Heroic Story of Iranian School Teacher, Sports Champion

The photo of a lady teacher cleaning the tin roof of a school has gone viral on social media in the past few days. However, the story becomes more attractive when we find out that she has conquered all mountain peaks in Iran and is the first weightlifting woman in the country as well as the only woman caver in Guilan province.

Arezoo Zamini is a Jack-of-all-trades teacher who does everything from weightlifting to mountaineering, caving, waterfall climbing, and valley climbing.

She says since her photos were published, she has received congratulation messages not only from across Iran, but from Italy, Germany and Spain as well. She says everybody has hailed her as a lady teacher who feels responsible even toward the physical educational setting of her students and draws on her technical skills to help refurbish the school environment.

But this is only a small part of the capabilities of the brave and seasoned lady teacher of our story.

Below you will read a summary of the story of Arezoo Zamini’s life, which has been full of ups and downs, as published by Fars News Agency:

Low Budget of School, Teacher’s Perseverance

Arezoo teaches at Sa’eb school in Kooshal village in the city of Lahijan, the capital of Guilan province.

Heroic Story of Iranian School Teacher, Sports Champion“When I saw from the school yard the rundown condition of the tin roof, and remembered that snowfall was forecasted for the weekend, I got worried,” she says.

“In this season in northern cities, the locals’ only preoccupation is to fix the tin roofs of houses, schools, etc, before snow begins to fall. The reason is that the dust which is brought by wind and has settled down on tin roofs in one or two years turns into mud after it rains, helping the seeds brought there by wind to grow. Moreover, if this mud is not cleaned, it could weigh down on the roof when it snows and may cause the roof to collapse,” she adds.

“It takes at least 200,000 tomans (20 USD) to have a tin roof cleaned each time,” she says.

“I thought the Education Department has no budget for this. Moreover, our school is located in a village and has not income, either. So, I decided to go into action myself,” she adds.

Heroic Story of Iranian School Teacher, Sports Champion80 Minutes of Work on Tin Roof

She says tin roofs have very steep slopes and it is really dangerous to work on them.

“I brought all my specialised tools to the schools and set up a specialised workshop on the tin roof of the school,” she adds.

“The tin roof was 20 metres long and it took one hour and ten minutes to clean it. All the while, my students in the yard were enthusiastically encouraging me. And that photo which went viral on social media was taken by one of my students with my own mobile phone,” the teacher says.

Heroic Story of Iranian School Teacher, Sports ChampionForbidden to Do Sports till 33 Years of Age!

It would be surprising to know that Arezoo, who has conquered all of Iran’s mountain peaks and is the only woman caver in Guilan province and the first woman to have climbed the highest waterfall in the country, was forbidden to do any physical activity until she was 33 years old!

“I was suffering from a congenital heart disease; my heart had 6 problems and its malfunctions got worse gradually. When I was 10 years old, I underwent an open heart surgery whereby a transplant was carried out on only two of the holes in my heart, and the remaining 2 were left as they were,” she says.

“Still, I was put on the waiting list for a heart replacement and mitral valve replacement operation. In fact, I was not allowed to any activity, nor was I able to. I had to sit down ten times during a ten-minute walk, and I always longed to do sports,” she says.

Heroic Story of Iranian School Teacher, Sports Champion“In 2005, I happened to travel with Dr Maleki and Dr Hekmatpour on the train on a trip to Zanjan. On the way, Dr Maleki, who was a member of the jury of the country’s Weightlifting committee, asked my mother why I was so sad,” she adds.

“She has a heart disease,” answered my mother.

“Heart disease? Come on. Don’t listen to these things! Come and exercise with us. I promise you will get better” he said.

“No one, me included, believed it, but a miracle happened,” she says.

Arezoo I am! Iran’s 1st Woman Weightlifting Champion!

She says she started her workout with weightlifting exercises and made progress day by day.

“Regular exercises helped strengthen the muscles of my heart gradually and enabled me to do more vigorous physical exercises. I was the country’s first woman weightlifter and tried so hard that I managed to win the gold in national championships and I was chosen to attend Greece contests,” she says.

“I experienced whatever I had longed for, from running to swimming, badminton, weightlifting, and football,” Arezoo notes.

“When playing badminton, I would attach 0.5kg-weights to my hands and 1kg-weights to my feet to make my muscles stronger, and I got more surprised every time I saw my body was stronger than I thought,” she says.

Heroic Story of Iranian School Teacher, Sports ChampionNo Peaks Left to Conquer, So I Became a Caver!

She says she picked up mountain climbing in 2006, the same time she began to do weightlifting.

“I conquered all high summits in the country in 5 years,” she says.

“Afterwards, I attended specialised caving, valley climbing and waterfall climbing courses. And I was introduced as the only woman caver of Guilan province. Also, I managed to become the first Iranian woman to climb the 108-metre waterfall, the country’s highest,” she says.

My Heart Does Not Need to Be Replaced Anymore!

Arezoo says she conquered the Somamous peak, the highest summit in Guilan province. A tragic incident happened. A hole was created in the aortic valve of my heart, and doctors put me under a bond to not climb heights further than 2000 metres for 5 years,” says Arezoo.

Heroic Story of Iranian School Teacher, Sports ChampionShe received angiography two times from 2013 to 2015.

“Regular exercises have made the muscles of your heart so strong that there is no need to replace the ventricle and atrium anymore,” doctors told her.

“It would be interesting to know that my mother did not know, by then, that I was conquering mountain peaks as well. She panicked when she found out. After that, whenever I wanted to go on a mountain climbing expedition, she would tell me “Go wherever in the world you desire; just come back alive!’,” she says.

Arezoo says she was told by her doctor that she needed to keep doing strenuous exercises because her heart would stop If she halted doing exercises.

Arezoo Zamini holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences with 27 years of experience in teaching. She also has a brilliant record sports and is having good days with students at a school in a village in northern Iran.

‘EU Could Show Good Faith by Running Bank to Keep Ties with Iran’

Ahmad Reza Beigi, a member of Iranian Parliament’s Internal Affairs Commission maintains that if the European Union has had good faith in its tie with Iran, it could simply establish at least one bank to keep its financial ties with the Islamic Republic.

“The EU Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will never be launched. The idea of SPV was a trick launched by the Europeans against the Islamic Republic. If the Europeans had good faith towards Iran, they could simply establish a bank for keeping their trades with us,” he was quoted as saying in an interview with ICANA.

The lawmaker underlined that if the EU’s special mechanism was launched, the trade volume between Iran and the European Union could hit $6 billion, but “the Europeans are not ready to introduce, establish or allocate a bank to their trade ties with Iran, and prefer to launch only a special channel.”

He then said it is wrong to think that there is a conflict in the interests of the US and the EU and added the Islamic Republic should sit for trade talks with the states threatened by the fluctuation of the US dollar.

‘EU Could Show Good Faith by Running Bank to Keep Ties with Iran’“We should finally establish a joint Asian currency in the continent and pave the way for trade exchanges between the Islamic Republic of Iran and other Asian states like Turkey, Pakistan, India, Russia and Turkey,” he said.

Beigi also said today the ground is prepared for trade ties with Turkey due to lots of commonalities like joint borders and mutual interests between them.

“Meanwhile, we both have been suffering from the fluctuation of the US dollar value against our own national currencies. This can be a starting point for us to establish new trade ties with the regional states and in line with Russia establish a new way for the international economic ties,” he said.

According to the lawmaker, today there is a strong belief among experts that the countries suffering from the US dollar fluctuation are highly motivated to change their economic relations patterns. “They only need some infrastructures to get independent from the US dollar.”

Elsewhere, he said the performance of Iran’s diplomatic apparatus on the implementation of the SPV was not good and added as the Europeans have admitted, even if the SPV is launched, it won’t be helpful during the first several months.

“This means that the Europeans have only wasted our time by raising the idea of the SPV,” he concluded.

Following the US unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal back in May which sparked international criticisms, the remaining European signatories of the nuclear accord vowed to establish a special financial mechanism to defy the US sanctions and keep their ties with the Islamic Republic.

Months after the announcement, the Europeans have not yet managed to make the mechanism operational. Iran has dismissed the delay as unacceptable and said it will not wait for the mechanism forever.

Iran Proposes UNESCO to Name 2019 after Iranian Philosopher, University

“UNESCO is a reputable organisation as it conforms to the objectives, ideals and thoughts of the Iranian nation,” said Hojatollah Ayoubi, the secretary general of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, as quoted by Tasnim News Agency.

The Gondishapur University was one of the three Sasanian centres of education and academy of learning in the city of Gundeshapur. It was the most important medical centre of the ancient world during the 6th and 7th centuries.

Shahaboddin Sohrevardi was a Persian philosopher and founder of the Iranian school of Illuminationism, an important school in Islamic philosophy.

The official noted that the regional office of the International Commission of UNESCO opens in Yazd today.

He said Iran can pursue its interests at the UN body, adding Iranian people are top-rated when it comes to education and culture.

He said Iran may not be able to compete with some developed countries in terms of economy and different project, but is of high significance when it comes to having historical towns.

This term is used for someone who is in military and is engaged in temporary or permanent service in his country.

Tehran Raps Paris for Threatening Comments on Iranian Missiles

“Iran’s military capabilities are part of the country’s legitimate defence power and a guarantor of the Islamic Republic’s national security, which is based on the doctrine of deterrence,” Qassemi said in a Friday statement.

The spokesman said the Islamic Republic of Iran has designed its defence capabilities based on a realistic assessment of the existing threats and will strengthen them to the extent it deems necessary.

“Iran’s missile power is non-negotiable and this fact has been conveyed to the French side in continuous political dialogue between Iran and France,” he said.

The spokesman said the French top diplomat’s threat to impose new missile sanctions is against the spirit of political talks and cooperation between the two countries, stressing that any new sanctions by European states would convince Iran to reconsider its interaction with these countries.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been seeking consolidation of peace and stability in the region, and believes the mass sales of sophisticated and aggressive weapons by the US and some European countries including France have undermined stability and balance in the region,” he said.

Qassemi’s comments came after Le Drian said his country is ready to impose further sanctions on Iran if no progress is made in talks over its ballistic missile program.

“We are ready, if the talks don’t yield results, to apply sanctions firmly, and they know it,” Le Drian told reporters.

Diplomats previously told Reuters that new sanctions being considered by EU countries over the missile issue could include asset freezes and travel bans on IRGC and people involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program.

The phone conversation came amid reports that some opposition forces have attempted a coup in the country.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced the US believes Guaido is the country’s legitimate president.

Turkey has expressed support for Maduro, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan telling him to “stand tall” in the face of calls to step down.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Wednesday said he will hamper relations with Washington, giving US diplomats 72 hours to leave the country.

3 Business Investments to Make in Iran

Iran is country with a population of over 80 million people and the second largest country with the biggest population in the Middle East and North Africa Region.

There is no doubt that Iran is has a lucrative market with so much potential. If you’re wondering how you can take advantage of this growth, here are three business investments you can make in Iran.

Tourism

Travel agencies help in facilitating tourist-related activities for their customers with the help of their partners such as airlines and hotels. Along with the lifting of the sanctions by the UN, tourism in Iran has seen tremendous growth.

According to a report by the New York Times, a lot of travel tour operators are running out of departures to sell especially as the Iranian New Year (Nowruz) approaches.

Furthermore, the Iranian government is also aiming to attract 20 million tourists by 2025. These tourists are projected to spend over $30 billion by that year.

If you’re still unconvinced, here are five known tourist destination in Iran:

  • Persepolis – A world heritage site and known to be one of the most beautiful ancient sites.
  • The Eram Garden – Also called the Garden of Paradise. Located in Shiraz, the capital pf Persian poetry and also dubbed as the city of love.
  • Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque – Constructed in the early 17th century, this Iranian architectural beauty is a UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Jameh Mosque of Hamadan – This mosque was built in the 12th century in Hamadan which is also one of the oldest cities in the World. The world-renowned polymath Avicenna is buried here.
  • Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Arts (TMoCA) – This museum has one of the biggest collections of modern arts in the world. Works of art by Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, and Jackson Pollock can be seen here.

As you can see these destinations are inevitably going to attract a lot of tourists. Travel agencies are easy to set up as you can start this kind of business with a handful of employees. However, you need to be careful when dealing with credit card payments as you will be transacting with customers from different countries. Secure a BIN database to look up credit card details when accepting payments from your customers.

Consumer Goods

The consumer goods market in Iran has been performing very well even before the sanctions were lifted. Just like any other modern nation, Iranians love to shop, and their hunger for consumer goods is a market worth investing in.

Take, for example, coffee. Iran is starting to get big on coffee shops even if it’s a country that’s more devoted to tea. According to the Juice, Ice Cream and Coffee Shop Union of Tehran, there are about 250 coffee shops in the capital of Iran alone.

Here are three reasons why the Iranian consumer goods market is worth investing in:

  • They have a good foundation

After the Iraq-Iran war in 1988, the government made a massive effort to rehabilitate the city centre. Urbanization plans of the government included building shopping centres and high streets. These spaces continue to flourish because many of the Iranians fall in the middle-class bracket of the world’s economy.

  • Distribution

The country’s internal distribution system is remarkable which makes consumer goods distribution easier. Their transportation system is modernized with major cities conveniently connected to the capital city.

  • Location

Iran’s strategic location in the map is unmatched. The country shares its land borders with seven countries, connecting South Asian countries with the Middle East, and the Persian Gulf to the Caspian region. Setting up a factory of consumer goods in Iran could prove to be beneficial as it’s easier to reach different regions.

Startups

Tehran may not be Silicon Valley, but according to Startup Blink’s report on startup ecosystems, the city ranks 519th globally and 1st in Iran.

Just recently the country signed a multilateral startup deal with Russia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey. These four countries will work together to create startup centers to connect startups with various knowledge-based companies. This agreement between the four countries aims to develop technological cooperation in the region.

Due to Iran’s large population, there is a sizeable market for startups to thrive in. Moreover, over 70% of Iran’s population is under 35 and most of which have smartphones and access to the Internet. However, the major weakness of Iran’s startup ecosystem is the lack of funding for early-stage startups and mentors to help them reach the global market. If you’re someone who has an experience working with startups before, or if you’re an investor Iran could be the gold mine you’ve been looking for.

Conclusion

Iran may not be the first country you think about when thinking of diversifying your investment portfolio internationally. But, with Iran’s government paving the way for the international investors, there’s no reason why you have doubt these business investment ideas. Be sure to time your investments properly and talk to a lawyer before making a decision.

Iran Slams Russia for Deactivating S-300 during Israeli Airstrikes on Syria

Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Heshmatollah Falahatpishe says that had the systems operated properly, Israel could not easily carry out its airstrikes on Syria.

In an interview with IRNA, the lawmaker said Russia’s move to deactivate its S-300 missile system in Syria during Israeli airstrikes is susceptible to serious criticisms.

“It seems there is a type of correlation between the Zionist regime’s airstrikes and Russia’s deactivation of defensive systems deployed in Syria,” he said.

He further noted that following the Israeli airstrikes, he arrived immediately at the scene of the attack and found out that the reports on the casualties of the air raid released by Israel were totally wrong.

He described the reports as bluffs and added the Zionist regime is seeking to hamper the process of restoring peace and stability to Syria through conducting the airstrikes on the country.

“They want to provoke Iran into making certain reactions to create new challenges in Syria,” he concluded.

Israel targeted an airport in southeastern Damascus in Syria leaving a number of people dead and wounded on Monday. Russia said Syria’s air defences shot down more than 30 cruise missiles and guided bombs during Israel’s aerial attacks.

Israel claimed in a statement that the main targets of the attacks were Iranian forces. According to the statement, Iranian forces are operating in Syrian territory and launched a surface-to-surface rocket from Syrian territory aimed at the northern occupied Golan Heights.

“In response to the attack, during the night (Israeli military) fighter jets struck Iranian Quds Forces military targets in Syria in addition to Syrian aerial defence batteries,” it said.

Iran says its military presence in Syria is totally advisory and is aimed at helping Syrian government to cleanse the country of foreign-backed terrorists.
