Tehran, Washington close to reaching deal on sanctions removal: Iran negotiator

“All parties to the negotiations have accepted the two draft documents that Iran submitted at the beginning of this round of talks,” said Ali Bagheri Kani in an interview with al-Jazeera.

“The reason behind a delay in clinching a deal has been the European sides’ stance on nuclear issues,” said the head of the Iranian negotiating team.

He also told Al Mayadeen that “After one week of intense talks, the 4+1 group agreed to the proposal that Iran put forward while presenting its draft documents.”

“At the moment, there are two new drafts; one about the removal of sanctions, and the other about nuclear measures,” he noted.

“The two drafts presented by Iran will be the basis of the fresh round of negotiations,” the chief negotiator explained.

“For the eighth round of talks, we have a lot to do and have a very complicated responsibility,” he said.

Meanwhile, the European Troika announced in a statement on Friday that the breakthrough made with the talks in the past 24 hours has only brought the trend of talks closer to the point where they had been left off back in June when the previous Iranian administration was in office.

Iran and the P4+1 group – China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany – have been negotiating in Vienna aimed at removing anti-US sanctions and the revival of the Iran nuclear deal, JCPOA.

The negotiating delegations are expected to return to Vienna in about one week.

The unnamed official at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran told Nournews that the memory card mentioned by Rafael Grossi was destroyed in the sabotage operation in June. The attack the TESA Karaj complex was blamed on the Israeli regime.

“The Agency must answer why it is not using its capacity to prevent such sabotage operations, the origin of which is also known,” the official added.

The IAEA chief said on Friday that “we have doubts about that and this is why we are asking, ‘Where is it?’”

“I am hopeful that they are going to come up with an answer because it’s very strange that it disappears,” Grossi added.

Grossi’s remarks came two days after the IAEA struck a deal with Iran on replacing surveillance cameras that had been removed after the attack.

Iran has shown the International Atomic Energy Agency the surveillance cameras and their storage media, except the memory card from the destroyed camera.

16 Iranian provinces without any Covid fatalities

Since Thursday, 46 people have died of the disease in Iran, pushing the total fatalities to 130,992 as of the onset of the pandemic.

There were 2,196 new infections of Covid in Iran over the past 24 hours. They included 341 hospitalizations.

Meanwhile, 112,596,571 doses of Covid vaccine have been administered since the beginning of a vaccination campaign across Iran. Nearly 3.5 million people have received a third shot of the jab.

Iran left the fifth Coronavirus wave a couple of months ago. During that wave, Covid killed hundreds of people daily.

The current downward trend in Covid deaths and infections has been attributed to the swift vaccination drive. Officials are warning Iran is not yet completely out of the woods, though there are no red zones of the Coronavirus in the country.

Bagheri: Talks with P4+1 will resume in near future

Bagheri noted that the proposals were put forth in two draft documents the Iranian negotiating team has already presented to the P4+1, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany.

He added that initially, the European troika resisted Iran’s proposals regarding nuclear issues but finally agreed to continue the talks based on the Iranian draft documents.
The lead Iranian negotiator further said the negotiations will resume in the near future but no date has yet been set for that purpose.

Bagheri added that the EU’s Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora will be in touch will all sides and a date will be set for the resumption of talks in due course. Meanwhile, the European troika has expressed disappointment at the ending of the talks but said it respects Bagheri’s decision to return to Tehran for consultation.

The European troika also said the progress made during the past 24 hours has brought the talks close to where they stopped under the former Iranian administration.

Iran slams dismissal of female teacher in Canada for wearing hijab

Kazem Gharibabadi urged the Canadian government to intervene in the case of Ms.

Fatemeh Anvari who is a third-grade teacher in Canada’s Quebec Province.

The removal of the teacher has drawn widespread condemnation of a controversial law in Quebec, which critics say unfairly targets ethnic minorities under the pretext of secularism.

Fatemeh Anvari was told earlier this month that she would no longer be allowed to teach at a school in the city of Chelsea because her hijab violated a law passed in 2019.

Authorities at the school say the law bars public servants including police officers, lawyers, judges and teachers from wearing religious symbols while doing their work.

Iranian negotiator says Vienna talks made good progress

He said Iran and the P4+1 group of countries will hold a session of the joint commission of the 2015 nuclear deal. Bagheri added that talks will continue after a days-long hiatus.

Before he made those comments, Bagheri met with the EU’s Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora. Meanwhile, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and representative to international organizations in Vienna also confirmed the negotiations made progress and their trend was positive.

Iran and the P4+1 group – Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany – are working on Tehran’s proposals laid out in two draft texts regarding sanctions removal and nuclear issues.

They say differences remain despite progress in the talks.

The negotiating sides are trying to revive the Iran nuclear deal, JCPOA, and paving the way for the US return to the agreement. Washington withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 under former US president Donald Trump.

Iran, Hungary ink MOU on economic cooperation

The MOU was signed during the second meeting of Iran-Hungary joint economic cooperation commission in the presence of Iran’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Ehsan Khandouzi and visiting Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto in Tehran on Thursday.

The Iranian minister said on the sidelines of the commission that the two sides discussed cooperation in the fields of water treatment, seeds, power plants, animal feed, construction materials, and joint investment opportunities.

Khandouzi said the volume of bilateral trade currently stands at about $40 million which he said is low.

He added that a customs agreement was signed between Iran and Hungary on Thursday, describing it as a positive step towards the expansion of economic relations.
Khandouzi said his Hungarian counterpart promised to deal with problems facing Iranian businessmen who want to transit goods through Hungarian territory.

The Hungarian minister of foreign affairs and trade referred to the existing capacities for cooperation between the two countries in the fields of construction materials, agriculture and health.

Szijjarto described the negotiations during the second economic commission as successful adding that Hungarian economic agents have identified good capacities in Iran to expand cooperation.

China supports Iran’s positions during Vienna talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday told his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian over the phone that Beijing backs Iran’s approach to the negotiations given the positive actions and initiatives of the Islamic Republic.

Amir Abdollahian also thanked the Chinese government’s support for Tehran during the nuclear talks in Vienna, describing the negotiations there as good overall. He however criticized the lack of initiative on the part of the Western parties.

The foreign ministers of Iran and China also spoke over a range of other issues.

Amir Abdollahian deplored the US government and some Western countries over their move to diplomatically boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics. He announced the presence of senior sports officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran along with the caravan of Iranian athletes in this important event.

Amir Abdollahian also voiced his readiness to visit Beijing in the near future.

Wang Yi also thanked Iran for its stance on the West’s action in connection with the Beijing Winter Olympics. He described the relations between the two countries as strategic and announced the Chinese government’s determination to further expand and deepen relations.

Wang Yi also described the forthcoming visit of the Iranian foreign minister to China as an opportunity to advance the common goals of Tehran and Beijing.

The top Chinese diplomat reaffirmed his country’s support for Iran in the fight against Covid 19 until the eradication of the disease.

In the end, Iran’s foreign minister described actions such as the AUKUS treaty (between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom) as a sign of a severe weakening of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, NPT, through the application of double standards.

IRGC eliminates terror cell in Saravan

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said the group was attempting to carry out sabotage and terrorist operations when it was destroyed.

The IRGC said four members of the terrorist group were killed and a large amount of weapons and equipment were seized during the clash.

Saudi Arabia says it welcomes further talks with Iran

The top Saudi diplomat said a series of direct talks between Tehran and Riyadh are underway, which have already been officially announced, emphasizing that Saudi Arabia welcomes any talks with the Islamic Republic.

He also denied reports of a secret meeting between Saudi security experts with Iranians on the sidelines of a security meeting in Jordan.

The two neighbors and regional rivals have had no diplomatic relations since January 2016 following the attack on the Saudi Embassy in the Iranian capital Tehran after Saudi Arabia executed Shia Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

The two sides have held several rounds of talks over the past months in Iraq on a possible détente.
