Healthcare system in Gaza Strip has ‘totally collapsed’

Gaza War

He said 65 medics have been killed and 25 ambulances have been destroyed in Israeli air raids since October 7.

“Twelve hospitals and 32 healthcare centers were forced out of service. We are afraid that many more will stop operations in the coming hours due to lack of fuel,” the spokesperson stated.

“Children, women and elders make up around 70 percent of the victims,” al-Qudra continued, adding that around 1,550 people are reported to be trapped under the rubble, including 870 children.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also announced that nearly two-thirds of Gaza’s health facilities have ceased functioning during a deadly increase in Israeli air strikes.

A total of 46 of 72 healthcare facilities – including 12 out of 35 hospitals – have stopped functioning across Gaza, it added.

Palestinian health officials said damage from air raids and the lack of electricity and fuel to power generators due to an Israeli blockade have forced many overcrowded hospitals to close.

The latest escalation between Hamas and Israel began early on October 7, when the Palestinian fighters launched a surprise attack on multiple locations along the Gaza border in response to Israel’s repeated aggression against Palestinians and desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israeli officials estimate that more than 1,400 people have been killed in the Hamas assault and over 5,000 have been wounded.

Israeli massive air strikes on the densely-populated Gaza Strip, has so far killed almost 5,800 people and injured nearly 16,000 others.

Iran president hopes for promotion of ties with Riyadh, urges halt in Gaza carnage

Ebrahim Raisi Saudi Ambassador

President Raisi said Iran and the Saudi kingdom need to make diplomatic efforts to use the potentials in order to strengthen mutually beneficial relations and ensure the interests of the regional nations and the Islamic world.

The Iranian president also touched on the latest developments in the Gaza Strip where over 2.3 million Palestinians have been under the heaviest Israeli assault since 2006.

“In the recent unprecedented crimes by the Zionist regime and its Western supporters in Gaza, a unified stance from the Islamic world could have prevented the oppression and aggression by the Zionist regime and the excessive demands by its Western supporters in a more effective way,” he noted.

Meanwhile, al-Anzi conveyed “warm greetings from the Saudi king on this historical day”, and said, “The relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia are very firm, because the bonds and commonalities between the two nations and countries are more than their differences.”

The Saudi envoy expressed gratitude to Iran for helping the kingdom in many fields and on many issues, and sounded upbeat that the cooperation between the two countries will improve.

Iran and Saudi Arabia restored ties and reopened embassies in March after a seven-year hiatus due to differences over several issues, including the war on Yemen.

US sends military advisers to Israel, including expert in urban warfare: Report

Israeli Army

One of the officers leading the assistance is Marine Corps Lieutenant General James Glynn, who previously helped lead special operations forces against the Daesh terror group and served in Fallujah, Iraq, the official stated.

Glynn will also be advising on how to mitigate civilian casualties in urban warfare, added the official, who was not authorised to discuss Glynn’s role and spoke on condition of anonymity.

US military officers who are advising Israel “have experience that is appropriate to the sorts of operations that Israel is conducting”, John Kirby, the White House spokesman, also told reporters on Monday.

The advisers will not be engaged in the fighting, the unnamed US official told AP.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said in a video statement released Monday Israel is preparing for a “military operation” on Hamas from the “air, ground, and sea”.

Gallant has completed a tour of the Ashdod Navy base, where he stated he “conducted a situation assessment of naval operations” and “toured the shores on Israel’s southern border together with Navy Commander VADM David Saar Salama”.

He commended the work of soldiers and commanders in “thwarting many attacks that would have taken place” against Israel, Gallant noted in a video statement filmed during the visit.

“My message to the soldiers – well done, you did an excellent job! Keep preparing for our operation, it will come soon. We are preparing thoroughly for the next step – a multilateral operation in the air, ground, and sea,” Gallant continued, adding, “Do your work, get ready. We will need you.”

Arab states may try to make ICC launch investigation against Israel: Report

Gaza War

The Jerusalem Post newspaper writes, “As the conflict extends, there will be a rising tide of demands by the human rights community and many Arab countries for culpability for so many Palestinian civilian deaths.”

It means that the ICC may launch a probe against the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Meanwhile, the paper notes that US President Joe Biden and European leaders are supporting Israel because of “the crimes committed by Hamas fighters and their murder of Israeli civilians”. The fact could impact ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan and the court as “EU countries pay most of its budget”.

The daily also said that the ICC had moved at slow speed in the past. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict escalated once again in 2014 but “the ICC did not even decide to proceed with a criminal probe against Israel and Hamas until almost seven years later in March 2021”. Khan “mostly ignored the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in public during his first two years in office”.

He takes heed of the political winds regarding where key ICC member nations think his time should be spent. This was one reason he has stayed away from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict until now, the Jerusalem Post added.

The paper says that a ground operation in Gaza and more civilian casualties may weaken international support for Israel.

“If the final scorecard shows 5, 10, or 20 times more dead Palestinian civilians versus Israeli ones, the EU, or enough of it, may back Khan taking a ‘balancing’ approach, going after both sides,” the newspaper concluded.

The ICC prosecutor stated in an interview with Reuters on October 12 that the court had jurisdiction over potential war crimes carried out by Hamas fighters in Israel and Israelis in the Gaza Strip, even though Israel was not a member state. The court has had an ongoing investigation in the Palestinian territories into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity there since 2021, the news agency added. The current violence also falls under its mandate, Khan said, according to Reuters.

US fanning flames of Gaza war: Iran’s FM

Hossein Amirabdollahian

Amirabdollahian made the remark in a late Monday press conference following the conclusion of the second 3+3 regional platform meeting, dubbed “Time for Peace, Cooperation, and Progress in the South Caucasus.”

The platform was established to resolve the existing problems in Caucasus through inclusion of regional countries and exclusion of extra-regional and Western states. It’s first meeting was held in Moscow in December 2021 at the level of deputy foreign ministers and without the presence of Georgia.

“One of the important issues raised during today’s meeting was the issue of Palestine” and the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, Amirabdollahian said, noting that his Turkish and Russian counterparts had taken “strong positions in favor of cessation of the war.”

The Iranian top diplomat was referring to the devastating war that Israel has been waging against the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7, after the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups staged Operation al-Aqsa Storm, a surprise attack into the occupied territories, in response to the Israeli regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the Israeli onslaught has so far killed over 5,000 Palestinians, including 2,055 children and 1,119 women, while more than 15,000 people have been injured.

“Unfortunately, the United States has been offering its one-sided and full support to the Zionist regime,” Amirabdollahian continued, adding, “Today, the American security apparatus is managing” Israel’s war on Gaza.

“The administrative and political system in the occupied territories has completely fallen apart, but under direct supervision of American military personnel, the regime’s war machine is trying to save the collapsed [Israeli] regime from crisis,” he stated.

The Iranian foreign minister also pointed to American officials’ frequent visits to the occupied territories and their underway efforts to have the United Nations Security Council pass a resolution to portray Israel’s genocidal crimes as an instance of “self-defense.”

Amirabdollahian said he has brought up this issue with his Russian and Chinese counterparts during the Tehran meeting, noting, “All of our efforts are aimed at preventing a resolution from being issued against [the resistance movements in] Palestine.”

Iran’s foreign minister then touched on the United States’ direct involvement in the Israeli war on Gaza and the Tel Aviv regime’s efforts to prevent humanitarian aid from reaching the coastal territory.

“The al-Quds occupying regime is trying to eliminate the resistance from [political equations in] Gaza and they also seek forced displacement of the residents of Gaza,” he continued.

He confirmed that American officials have been sending messages to all parties involved in Palestine’s developments, including Iran, adding, “Their messages contain two main points. Firstly, [they allege that] they are not interested in further spread of the war, and secondly, they call on Iran to show self-restraint.”

“Despite their claims [about being opposed to further spread of war], the Americans have been fanning the flames of war on Gaza during the past two weeks by sending thousands of arms consignments [to Israel] and supporting the regime,” Iran’s foreign minister said.

“Therefore, we warn all the countries that have been involved in the recent escalation [in Gaza], including the United States and the Zionist regime, to stop the massacre [of Palestinian people] before it is too late,” Amirabdollahian concluded.

West supporting Israel’s crimes against Palestinians: Iran’s president

Raisi and Lavrov

Raisi made the remark in a Monday meeting with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who was in Tehran to take part in the second meeting of the 3+3 regional platform, which includes the three South Caucasus countries of Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan plus Russia, Turkey, and Iran.

“What is happening in Gaza is a horrendous crime against defenseless and innocent women and children, which is being committed with the direct and official support of the United States and other Western countries,” the Iranian president said.

Israel has launched a devastating war on the Palestinian territory since October 7, after the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups staged Operation al-Aqsa Storm, a surprise attack into the occupied territories, in response to the Israeli regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the Israeli onslaught has so far killed over 5,000 Palestinians, including 2,055 children and 1,119 women, while more than 15,000 people have been injured.

During the meeting, Raisi also pointed to recent remarks made by US President Joe Biden during his visit to the occupied territories earlier this month, when he noted, “I have long said: If Israel didn’t exist, we would have to invent it.”

“These remarks [by the US president] mean that the Americans are prepared to trample upon the blood of women and children, and the rubble of the Palestinian people’s homes in order to meet their [own] interests,” the Iranian president stated.

He then pointed to underway efforts by Washington to have the United Nations Security Council pass a resolution that would try to portrait Israel’s actions as an instance of “self-defense.”

“Today, the United States is trying to pursue through a UN Security Council resolution what it has not been able to achieve in the field with regards to supporting the Zionist regime and meeting its own racist interests,” Raisi continued.

Iran’s president added, “Therefore, all nations and free-thinking people of the world hope that in view of its position and effective presence in the Security Council and on the international level, Russia would be able to prevent the Americans from achieving their goal.”

For his part, the Russian foreign minister laid emphasis on Moscow’s commitment to implementation of all of the country’s agreements with Iran in economic, commercial, transport, energy, and cultural fields.

Lavrov said his participation in the meeting of the 3+3 regional platform was a manifestation of growing regional cooperation between Iran and Russia.

According to the Russian top diplomat, further expansion of cooperation among regional countries would help them meet their interests, and at the same time, pursue their development goals.

“During today’s meeting, it was emphasized [by all participants] that regional problems must be settled without any interference from foreign parties,” Lavrov emphasized.

Hamas frees two more captivates

Hamas Israel Hostages

The International Committee of the Red Cross said it facilitated the release of the two women and transported them out of the Gaza Strip on Monday evening.

“Our role as a neutral intermediary makes this work possible, and we are ready to facilitate any future release,” the charity added.

The women were identified as 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz and 79-year-old Nurit Cooper. Footage broadcast on Egyptian TV showed them being taken out of Gaza on stretchers, at the Rafah crossing into Egypt, and placed in ambulances. Their husbands were not released and were reportedly still among the more than 200 hostages being held in Gaza.

Hamas freed the two women for “compelling humanitarian reasons”, the group’s military wing announced in a statement on Telegram.

Two American women with dual US-Israeli citizenship – a mother and daughter from suburban Chicago – were released on Friday.

The latest release comes amid media reports that President Joe Biden’s administration is urging Israeli officials to delay a major ground offensive against Hamas to provide more time to negotiate the release of additional hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to “demolish” Hamas in retaliation for its October 7 attacks, which left about 1,400 people dead. More than 5,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes since the war began.

Hamas deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri said on the day of the attacks that the group would use the hostages to negotiate the release of all Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

“As to our prisoners, I say, your freedom is looming large,” he told Al Jazeera, adding, “What we have in hand will see you set free. The longer fighting continues, the higher the number of prisoners will become.”

An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman issued an ultimatum on Monday, stressing the ground offensive will be canceled if Hamas surrenders “unconditionally” and frees all of the hostages.

Khaled Meshaal, the head of the Palestinian group’s office in the diaspora, has also stated that captives held by Palestinian groups in Gaza will be released if Israel stops bombing the beseiged enclave.

No direct Iran order for proxies to attack US forces in ME: Pentagon

US Troops

US forces have been repeatedly targeted by missiles and drones since the Israel-Gaza conflict began on Oct. 7.

“We don’t necessarily see that Iran has explicitly ordered them to take these kinds of attacks,” Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told reporters.

Ryder, however, stated that the United States ultimately holds Iran responsible for such attacks by militant groups “by virtue of the fact that they are supported by Iran.”

On Sunday, senior Joe Biden administration officials including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned of the risk of significant escalation in attacks on American troops in the Middle East and of “Iran seeking to widen the Israel-Hamas war”.

At the weekend, Austin ordered new air defenses to the Middle East to safeguard troops. He noted the Pentagon will send a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air defense missile system battalions to the region.

The United States has also sent warships and fighter aircraft to the region to try “to deter Iran and Tehran-backed groups from widening the conflict”. This includes the deployment of two aircraft carriers and about 2,000 Marines.

“No one wants to see a wider regional conflict, but we will not hesitate to protect our forces,” Ryder stressed.

Iranian officials have repeatedly advised the United States to take its military forces out of Syria and Iraq.

Clingy suitor injures woman, two others in Iran after getting thumbs down

Crime Scene

The man, whose identity was withheld by the police, was on the run and was about to flee the country when he was arrested in a border town on Monday.

The police released a video footage showing the reconstruction of the crime scene and the blindfolded detainee who looked in his 20s.

The footage shows the infuriated man entered a drug store in Shahr-e Rey on October 7 and shot and wounded the woman and two others.

The police officer, who was in command of the arrest operation, said the man had a criminal record and was free on bail.
