Ahmad Esmaeilpour and Mahdi Javid scored two goals each for Iran and Francisco Martinez, Juan Salas and Rene Villalba were on target for Paraguay.

The Iranian national futsal team shocked five-time champion Brazil in a penalty shootout in the round of 16.

The Iranians will now go up against Russia in the semi-final.

The 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup tourney, the eighth edition of the tournament, opened in several Colombian cities on Sept. 10 and will run until Oct. 1.

On Sunday, Argentina will square off against Egypt in Medellin and Azerbaijan will play Portugal in Cali.

Iran’s First Online Census Gets into High Gear

Ashkan Shabbak, head of the supervisory committee on the census, told IRNA news agency on Sunday that he expected 35% of Iranians to fill out online version of the survey. Those who do not use the Internet will be surveyed in October.

The official underlined the importance of public cooperation in supplying proper data, saying it would provide state planners with better feedback for future policies.

“National census results are the basis of planning in the country. Proper information can help improve the formulation of economic, social and cultural programs,” Shabbak said.

The survey, conducted every five years, provides a snapshot of the living conditions of some 80 million Iranians, detailing their education, income, family background, marital status and so on.

According to the World Bank, the Iranian economy is headed for a 4.4% growth rate in 2016. The dynamism created by a nuclear agreement, putting differences over Iran’s nuclear program to rest, has led to an economic recovery.

Iran’s current account balance is projected to turn into a surplus in 2017, primarily driven by rising oil exports.

However, there was no immediate word on the security of the data being collected. In July, media reports said Iran’s second largest mobile operator, Irancell, had lost the personal information of 20 million customers in a data leak.

The incident was the biggest known data breach in Iran’s cyber-history. Iran’s cyber-police later announced that they had arrested a 19 year-old computer student for disseminating the data.

Minister of Information and Communications Technology Mahmoud Vaezi said one of the Irancell operators shared its customer’s database with an organization and one employee of that organization leaked the information.

Meanwhile, Tasnim news agency said the survey website was facing “disruption” due to heavy traffic. It put the problem down to officials’ failures to properly project users’ response.

Instagram’s Photo of the Day: Mother and Child Swimming in Lake Urmia

Urmia

A photo of an Iranian mother and her child swimming in Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran was selected by Instagram as its photo of the day.

The photo was taken by the Iranian photographer Majid Saeedi.

“An Iranian woman with her daughter, both wearing Islamic Hijab, playing in the remnants of Lake Urmia in northwest of Iran; the Lake is one of the world’s largest salt lakes,” Saeedi said in his description of the photo.

“The red colour of the water is because of Halophile bacteria, which produce pink-red pigments in very salty waters,” he went on to say, as reported by ISNA and translated by IFP.

urmiaSaeedi was born in 1974 in Tehran. He started photography career when he was 16. He was 18 years old when he went to Iran-Iraq border for photography.

His photography project ‘Life in War’, which is focused on the lives of Afghan people after the country’s war, has won several prizes in different events.

According to Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Syrian first female parliament speaker, Hadiyeh Khalaf Abbas, will soon visit Iran at the official invitation of her Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani.

He went on to say that during the visit, Khalaf Abbas will confer with Larijani on the latest parliamentary and political relations between Tehran and Damascus.

In a historic move for the war-torn country, Hadiyeh al-Abbas was chosen as the first female parliament speaker in Syria in June.

The female politician, 58, holds a Ph.D. in agricultural engineering from Aleppo University. She previously served as a member of parliament from 2003 to 2007. Prior to that, she served as part of the governing body of the regional branch of the ruling Arab Baath Socialist Party from 1988 to 1998.

Iran Embarks on Mass Production of New Ballistic Missile

Manufacturing of the homegrown ballistic missile coincides with the Sacred Defense Week, which marks the onset of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran 36 years ago.

Zolfaqar runs on solid fuel and can hit the targets with pin-point accuracy in a range of 750 kilometers.

The tactical missile, which is capable of evading jamming signals in electronic warfare, will come into service by the end of the current Iranian year, in March 2017.

Zolfaqar enjoy a cluster warhead capable of hitting targets spread over the ground.

The new homegrown missile was unveiled during Wednesday’s nationwide parades marking the Sacred Defense Week.

The first images of the test-fire of the missile has been release by the Iranian defense ministry’s official website.

In recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and has attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to the regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

Iran’s Defense Ministry on Sunday released video of the latest homegrown ballistic missile, Zolfaqar, being launched and hitting a target.

The video shows Zolfaqar moving upward with a thick vapor trail and then detonating a target in the middle of a desert area.

Russia Seriously Looking for Iran’s Help in Gaining Know-How of Long-Range Drones

General Bagheri

“Today, long-range drones identify and shoot their targets with a great precision, and only one or two countries are capable of making such drones,” Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said on Sunday, September 25.

“Even Russians are seriously looking for our help to gain the know-how of long-range drones,” he noted, as reported by Tasnim and translated by IFP.

“Of course the US has the technology, and Israelis also enjoy the achievement thanks to the Americans,” he went on to say.

He further noted that many of these sciences have been achieved during wars.

“After the Sacred Defence (Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s), when I studied geography, I found that the scientific depth achieved in Operation Valfajr 8, where almost 15 battalions crossed that river, has yet to be experienced anywhere in the world, and no one has its know-how,” he said.

“Even the current war in Syria and Iraq against terrorists can be a competition for the production of knowledge,” General Baqeri said.

A Canadian Minister Born in Iran’s Mashhad

Globe and Mail recently revealed that the Canadian Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef was not born in Afghanistan’s Herat, as she had earlier announced.

Monsef in a statement responded to the Globe and Mail’s report, saying that she feels responsible towards Canadian people and is transparent about her roots.

Here is the full text of her statement, as covered by Entekhab:

“Today, The Globe and Mail published an article outlining that I was in fact born in Mashhad, Iran and not in Herat, Afghanistan – as I was led to believe for my whole life.

Because I know my story has resonated with many Canadians, I wanted to take the time today to clear any misconceptions this may have unintentionally caused.

In recent days, my mother told me for the first time that my sisters and I were in fact born in Mashhad, Iran, approximately 200 kilometres from the Afghan border.

Maryam MonsefFollowing my parents’ wedding in Herat, the local security situation became untenable. The town was severely damaged by war and thousands were killed.  No longer safe in their home town, my parents decided not to take risks and went to Mashhad, Iran, where they could be safe – with the hope of soon returning to the place their families called home for generations. While we were technically safe in Iran, we did not hold any status there and like the thousands of other Afghan refugees, we were not afforded all of the same rights and privileges given to Iranian citizens. After my father’s death, we travelled back and forth between Afghanistan and Iran when the security situation permitted it.

My sisters and I asked my mother why she never told us we were born in Iran. She told us she did not think it mattered. We were Afghan citizens, as we were born to Afghan parents, and under Iranian law, we would not be considered Iranian citizens despite being born in that country.

Some survivors believe healing comes from telling their story; others cannot fathom revisiting the past. My mother never talked about the unspeakable pain that conflict and terror inflicted on her. This week my sisters and I asked her to re-live that pain.

Conflict has robbed me of a father and it has scarred my family and I for life. We thankfully found a welcoming home in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, where we began the challenging and difficult process of resettlement.

Coming to Canada as a refugee – twenty years strong – and now a member of Cabinet in the 42nd Parliament – I feel a tremendous deal of responsibility in upholding all that this great country has allowed me to become. This includes accountability to the public and transparency.

Canada has played an important role in allowing me to become who I am today. It’s the only place I’ve ever truly felt I belonged, and I couldn’t be more proud to be Canadian.”
