Imam Khomeini’s Grandson Calls on Iranians to Back Rouhani

Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, the influential grandson of the Islamic Republic’s founder, has come out in support of presidential candidate Hassan Rouhani, hailing the enormous capabilities of the incumbent government.

Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the late founder of the 1979 Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini, has, in a video message, announced his support for Rouhani, expressing the hope that on May 19, Iranians would decide their fate for the coming years and shape their future.

Addressing the Iranian people, he said, “We hope that on the day of the election (May 19), we would decide our fate for the coming years and decades. Chief economists of the country have all attested to the [incumbent] government’s enormous capabilities.”

On Friday (May 19), Iranians will go to ballot boxes to cast their votes in favour of their favourite candidates.

Vetted by the Guardian Council, initially six candidates qualified to compete in Iran’s 12th presidential election. They included Mostafa Aqa-Mirsalim, Mostafa Hashemitaba, Es’haq Jahangiri, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and Hassan Rouhani.

With only a few days to the election, however, two of the candidates Qalibaf and Jahangiri, dropped out of the race in favour of their fellow-partisans, Raisi and Rouhani, respectively.
