A top Iranian parliamentarian says Washington’s plan to establish an air-exclusion zone in Syria is a nonstarter and will only further complicate the crisis in the Middle East.
In a Farsi interview with ICANA, senior Iranian lawmaker Mohammad Rezaei commented on the US plan to create a no-fly zone over Syria. He said the move will not be successful.
“The plan by the US and Turkey to establish an air-exclusion zone will push the crises in Syria and in the region into a new phase, and will make the situation much worse and complicated,” said Rezaei, who sits on the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.
He also took a swipe at some officials of the US and certain other regional countries who said they would supply terrorists with air defence weapons.
He said the US missile strike at a Syrian airbase indicated Washington’s blatant support for terrorist groups.
The Iranian MP noted the allegation that Damascus used chemical arms in Idlib was just a fabricated excuse to implement the United States’ interventionist policies.
“Over the past few years and since the beginning of the Syria crisis, Western and Arab countries have been trying to implement scenarios such as the establishment of a no-fly zone and sending in modern weaponry, and they have given financial, political and arms support to terrorists,” he underlined.
He said the US direct military intervention in Syria’s conflict shows the American-Zionist scheme in the region has failed because they sought to use terrorists as a tool to set the stage for a change in Syria, but their attempts ended in a fiasco.
“In my point of view, Washington’s efforts to establish an air-exclusion zone will get nowhere, and the Syrian army as well as the resistance front backed by the people will definitely win over terrorists,” the parliamentarian underscored.
He said the creation of a no-fly zone by the US would amount to a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and international law.
