An Iranian official announced that Japan is ready to help restore Iran’s shrinking Lake Urmia and the joint operation will start in a few days.
According to a report by ILNA, as translated by IFP, Iran and Japan are determined to jointly save Lake Urmia from disappearing.
Mohammad Massoud Tajrishi, an official with Urmia Lake Restoration Programme, hailed the positive results of restoration program which was kicked off in 2013 and said, “According to a 10-year roadmap for ecological restoration of the lake in 2023, we have so far managed to stabilize Lake Urmia during the water years of 2013 to 2016.”
Tajrishi pointed to an excess of around 45% water use in irrigation by the farmers and added, “The water loss has reached the lowest rate through the use of pipelines and facilities in the surrounding areas of Lake Urmia.”
