Iran in Photos: Water in Howz Soltan Lake Turns Red

Howz-e Soltan Lake

Howz Soltan salt lake is still full of water despite the arrival of the very hot season in Qom, which leads to an increase in the amount of single-celled algae that reacts to the water evaporation.

The algae produces beta-carotene, a pigment that is in fact a type of red-coloured vitamin. It causes the water of Howz Soltan lake to turn stunningly red.
