Iran ranks eighth in the world in terms of producing cocoons and silk thread, a top Iranian official says.
Ali-Asghar Dadashpour, the head of Iran’s Sericulture Development Center, says the country ranks eighth in the world when it comes to the production of cocoons and silk thread.
“Despite a drop in production in the 1980s, the Agriculture Ministry once again put plans on its agenda to revive the sericulture industry,” he said, according to a Farsi report by the Azad News Agency (ANA).
He said measures have been adopted to give fresh impetus to the sericulture industry in the country, including offering bank loans and grants to those working in the industry, holding training sessions to boost the knowledge of experts, buying cocoons from sericulture activists at guaranteed prices and providing them with high-quality cocoons.
He said no precise annual figures are available on the domestic need for cocoons and silk thread, urging institutions which need the products to announce the amount of cocoons and silk thread that they need a year.
