Iran’s top security official Shamkhani says Syria’s shoot-down of the Israeli jet fighter in the Golan Heights made the Tel Aviv regime realize that the era of hit-and-run is over.
Speaking on the sidelines of the massive rallies in Tehran marking the 39th anniversary of Iran’s 1979 Revolution on Sunday, Secretary of Iran’s National Security Council Ali Shamkhani rejected the Israeli officials’ baseless claim about the flight of an Iranian drone in the Golan Heights.
“It is nonsense because no one uses an F-16 jet to target a drone” he was quoted as saying in a Farsi report by Fars News Agency.
He also dismissed Tel Aviv’s claim that Israeli warplanes have managed to target an Iranian-Syrian base inside Syria. He underlined Iran only has an advisory presence in Syria.
Earlier on Friday, the Syrian military hit at least one Israeli warplane that attacked positions inside Syrian territory, sending it down in flames and smoke.
Syrian state TV cited a Syrian military official as saying that Syrian aerial defence had responded to Israeli “aggression” against an army base in central Syria.
Following the incident, the Israeli army said Tel Aviv held Iran directly responsible for the crash of its jet. “This is a serious Iranian attack on Israeli territory. Iran is dragging the region into an adventure in which it doesn’t know how it will end,” the army said in a statement.
